I didn't come for the buffet. In fact, I came with 20 of my closest relatives and a handful of my sister's friends for her graduation. We made a same day reservation and shut the restaurant down. The food was good...interesting that they had a "traditional" and less traditional "chinese" food menu. My family being Chinese, we ordered off a menu that was truly for Chinese food connoisseurs. We had some black beaned fish, rice deserts, steamed fish and Peking duck. I was thrilled. The was good, but the service for a practically impromptu group of 25-30 folks was absolutely stellar. I tried their Hot Pot Buffet once and Dim Sum many times. For Hot Pot Buffet, they had great variety of food, price was very reasonable, and the food itself was fresh and delicious. As compared to other Asian buffets, the quality and price were much better. However, the only thing I would complain was that the soup base was too plain, just like a pot of hot water. I love their Dim Sum more than the Hot Pot Buffet. I strongly recommend their Preserved Egg and Shredded Pork Congee. It was very delicious and good congee should look and taste exactly like this - could hardly see the shape of the rice. Another dish I love is Tofu Pudding with Ginger. Although it was a dessert, I always ordered it when I got a seat because it went out quickly. I found other things kind of greasy for me sometimes, but these two were always relatively light and still preserve the smell and taste they should have. There are always very crowded during lunch time on weekends. If you don't like to wait in line, just like me, then go there around 11-11:30am. Our friends took us here for dinner last night for our first meal in Houston. I would never have thought of an all you can eat Vietnamese Buffet. I was a bit skeptical about the quality of the food but I was proven wrong. I'm normally not a fan of buffets because quality wise, its not great. I decided to go with some of my favorite Vietnamese cuisines, the spring rolls and banh xeo. They were both good surprisingly. What surprise me even more is the sauce. I'm very picky about sauces but I like them. The sauce makes or breaks a Vietnamese dish. I also really like their stir fried blue crabs. I do not know what flavoring they use but it was so good. I wanted to lick my fingers there but I didn't want to appear unladylike. I would've done it with my sisters. Just those 3 alone would bring me back to this place. They also have hot pot with a great selection for $1 extra. I didn't get to try it but I saw all the fresh jumbo shrimps and blue crabs there. It was a Tuesday afternoon when my friends and I were looking for a restaurant to stop by. 3 restaurants were closed, apparently lunch time on a Tuesday is not a good time to stop by Chinatown for dim sum. The biggest problem I had with this place was how dirty the utensils were. Like, why does my plate and sliver ware have stains? Service was okay. I love how Kim Son is a Vietnamese buffet. They are always many options to choose from and the food is actually authentic. The place is huge and super nice. They are also used for weddings and other events. There are two ballrooms. On the left is a dim sum place that is open on the weekends. I don't recommend that. It's not the best dim sum. On the right, is the buffet. It's also the one with more traffic. There is a booth in front of the where you tell the host the number of people in your party. If it isn't too busy, she'll seat you right away. In the ballroom area, right in the middle, are the hot prepared foods. There's some authentic items as well as more Americanized items. To the right is the soup section. There are many authentic soups to chose from such as noodles, dumplings, rice dishes, and congee. On the far right is a sweet soup bar, fresh fruits. and prepared Vietnamese desserts. Overall, I really like this place. I can get my Vietnamese food fix all in one place. Everything is delicious. All your vietnamese food cravings are here from banh beo, goi cuon, banh xeo, banh bot chien, and many more. They have a station to request favorites like bun Bo hue, bun rieu, mi thap cam, chao long, mi quang.....a total of 18. There's also a variety of sushi which is not bad at all and crawfish. Actually taste great and comparable to many crawfish restaurants. You can also pay a few dollars more to add hotpot. Desserts have a good amount of options and now you can make your own version of che ba mau. Service can be a hit or miss especially how big your group is. I find that with bigger groups, service is much more unreliable. The room itself is big and open space. On the left side, it is used for dim sum in the mornings and weekends. Other rooms are reserved for special occasions such as weddings. For adults m-r, for dinner it is $14.95 and on weekends, it is $17.95. For all the food included at a very good price in my opinion, this is a great deal! We used to go to Kim Son buffet a lot. But our last visit was a bit disappointing. Their website says it closes at 10. We arrived a bit before 9, but many of the foods were almost gone or empty while many are cold. The noodles place closed at 9.15. That was quite a let down. It was a slow day and they tried to close early. The hostess did not inform us when we arrived though. However, our waiter profusely apologized and explained the situation when we made a complaint. This was our third time to dine at Kim Son and our last experience was at the buffet. We were not impressed compared to our first buffet experience. But my wife and I wanted give the Dim sum a try on Sunday morning after reading favorable reviews. The food and service was excellent. The carts return frequently. I was dying of hunger because I wanted to wait to get in Kimson. It was paid off. Everything is perfect but a little salty for me. I feel guilty because I did not finish those salty dishes. " banh xeo and dessert" is the best and I would recommend it to all my friends. However, the guy with yellow hair color in frond desk and the lady at the noodle section need to be trained. He saw us but did not even say hi nor tell us to sit and wait. Then we just looked at him with confusing. Also the first lady at the noodle section was talking on her headphone and did not hear us ordering food then asked us "what" which was too disrespecful. That why I took off one * . One of my favorite places to go for a unique Chinese/Vietnamese style buffet. What separates this place apart from other buffets, is it's variety of food. They have sushi, green onion pancake, "banh xeo" (basically a Vietnamese pancake made with friend egg and folded over with bean sprouts in the middle; dip with fish sauce), and an area where you can order soup dishes. These soup dishes are actually very tasty, considering this is a buffet! They include: pho, bun bo hue, banh canh (udon), and many others that I have not tried yet. The only draw back to me is the dessert section, which could use some more variety; they USED to have green tea ice cream I remember but, not anymore... now it is just a machine with faux ice cream mix =/ Always a go-to place when family is in town. This review is for the dimsum. (Not a fan of the buffet. There's better Chinese and Vietnamese food out there). Pros: delicious as always. I've been coming here for dimsum for years. Cons: brought some dimsum newbies to try dimsum for the first time, and the fried taro shrimp dish and fried shrimp ball with the crab claw had hair in it. Not on it, but literally cooked into the shrimp ball. They replaced it, but still charged us for it. I guess next time I try to introduce friends to dimsum I need to take them to a place where they won't get a hair ball. Or where they won't charge us when they serve us hair balls. That being said, I'll probably still come here in the future. It's delicious when they haven't seasoned the food with hair! 5 stars for the food! Awesome food, great selection and fresh food! Met one of the owners, great guy and very accommodating and concerned with how service was. This time, they had escargot in the shell, I am used to either stuffing mushrooms with the escargot or eating them with garlic and butter and NOT having to get them out of a shell. I had a Vietnamese patron eating several tables from me come over and show me how he gets the snail out of the shell. Great tasting BUT too much trouble for what the reward is --meat! I've gone to Kim Son for months but decided to write a review today. I will list the pros and cons of this business. I was amazed at the wide selection of Vietnamese food Kim Son offered the first time I came to the restaurant. Pros: 1. Great food selection ranging from Chinese to Vietnamese dishes. 2. Great service; the servers often come for cleaning and refills. 3. They change their menu often so regular customers do not get bored with the same selection. 4. Spacious environment; high ceiling and wide area enhance the dining experience. 5. The hot pot is only $1 dollar extra!!! 6. Free meal on your birthday. Cons: 1. The price is a bit high; more than $15/person buffet is a bit costly. 2. Parking can be a problem on the weekends. 3. Expect to wait 30 min to 1 hr on Sundays (afternoon) for a table. 4. Ineffective ticket system during high traffic hours; some people come after get tables before those waited before. Overall, I enjoyed Kim Son for the past few months. BEST Vietnamese buffet in Houston, hands down. Y'all could already tell its good since the place is always crowded, no matter what time of day it is. They had such a wide variety of Viet food that if you're a foreigner and never tried any of these food before, you would be introduced to literally every single food that is native to Vietnam. Closer to 4.5 stars. Down a bit because they don't have coffee (what? no coffee?!). Plus you have to climb some rundown looking stairs as it's on the second floor. Plus part of the restaurant is in a cavernous, dim and dingy room, didn't like that much. So when they moved to the location in The Fountains in Stafford, we thought we'd give them another try and once again were not impressed (it was a long time ago but I recall it was crowded and loud and the service was still spotty - tho you know in the past year or so I did have the occasion to eat there a couple times and I thought the service and food were much improved, tho watered down for non-Asian tastes). Anyhow. in recent years, I kept hearing about Kim Son and dim sum at the location on Bellaire near Wilcrest. Wait a minute, dim sum. I don't remember Kim Son being a dim sum place. And I love dim sum. So finally I got over my prejudices and decided to go looking for this dim sum. Didn't find it (because it's on the left side served from 10am to 3pm). But I did find this really amazing buffet. Hard core, no-holds-barred, authentic Vietnamese food. It is excellent. Not the Kim Son I remember. For a dollar extra during dinner only you can get hot pot. There's this station that serves up soup like pho. They have decent bun bo hue.A few other prepared to order dishes. Lots of seafood -crawfish, shrimp, mussels, crab. Sushi. I have discovered a new passion. Rambutan. It's a fruit, the Vietnamese call it chom chom. I'd see people walking by with plates of it. Dim Sum is no better than any other place in HTX. However, the last time I went the waitress gave my debit card to Jenny Ngo and gave me Jenny's card. The waitress gave me the card back wrapped in the customer receipt so I did not notice that I was given the wrong card until later that same day. Well Jenny, who has the same last name as the waitress, decided that she would buy lunch for her and all of her friends on my behalf. When I noticed that I did not have my card ,I immediately called my bank and found out that there had been fraudulant charges made. I then called Kim Son to ask them to void the charge and I was told "sure sure we will void it" but I was never asked for a ticket number or anything. Anytime my family and I visit Houston we come here. We love the variety of foods they offer. You get to choose between buffet or dim sum. The buffet room is huge and they offer a variety of dishes.
