Date of Dining Experience: 10/19/22 Food: 3/5 Ambiance: 5/5 Service: 3/5 Management: 5/5 Ah, Kimo's. A Front Street favorite. A Lahaina Legend. A island icon. And, apparently, an alliteration inspiration. The location of this longtime Lahaina restaurant cannot be beat, and we were lucky enough to get a table right on the water--when the sun started to get warm, we appreciated the cool sea spray from the crashing waves. Truly lunch with a view! We started with an ahi poke and avocado stack featuring Maui's signature Surfing Goat Cheese mixed directly into the succulent avocado purée. Salty house tortilla chips were the perfect accoutrement to this succulent appetizer. For our entrees, my dining partner and I both ordered sandwiches--fresh-caught mahi for me (more detail on this sandwich below) and a bbq bacon "Hawaiian Cowboy" burger for my partner. Both sandwiches were served with fries, and extra/specialty dipping sauces were complimentary, which is always a nice touch! I also ordered a side of coleslaw, further described below. While our waitress was perfectly pleasant, her sense of humor included making comments on the eating preferences of her patrons (i.e. ME), which might rub some diners the wrong way. In my case, she seemed quite surprised by how much tartar sauce I put on my dish sandwich (I had to ask for extra, as the top bun was completely dry) and wasn't afraid to voice her observation that "Wow, you REALLY like tartar sauce, don't you?" Maybe this seemed a little extra-insensitive since said tartar sauce was in the process of slip-sliding out of my sandwich and making my entire meal a mess when she made her comment. In fact, maybe it was simply embarrassment over the entire encounter rather than any fault of our waitress. In that vein, it seems that, while Kimo's is happy to offer unlimited sauces on the SIDE of their dishes, the chefs don't seem to believe in actually saucing the dishes themselves. For example, both sandwiches' (rather delicious but quite large) top buns were completely dry, requiring both my dining partner and myself to request extra sauce...leading to my embarrassing encounter with the waitstaff. The sandwiches themselves were good. Nothing remarkable, but solidly good. The fries, likewise, were tasty but nothing special. Finally, the "apple cider" coleslaw I ordered was absolutely inedible for lack of sauce and inclusion of raw celery (which is absolutely despicable and has no place in a slaw, in my humble opinion). Though my dining partner and I both took half of our sandwich home, we left the coleslaw on the table and received no inquiries as to why we didn't wish to take it home, too. And then...it was time for the most iconic part of any Kimo's experience: Hula Pie. I was excited to have found a coupon from a Maui tourism guide for a free pie with the purchase of two entrees, and I was prepared to use it. But, when I presented it to our waitress, she informed us that it was a "fake coupon". She further explained that Kimo's does have several ways to get free Hula Pie, this coupon was not one of them. Seeing my disappointment, she offered to check with the manager to see if they would accept the "fake coupon" this time. She promptly returned and informed us that they would, in this case, accept the "fake coupon" and give us a pie. So, in the end, I got to have my pie and eat it too--and it was, as always, yummy. Not gourmet. Not particularly remarkable in flavor. But simply stunning in presentation--nothing says Lahaina quite like a giant slice of chocolate-smothered macadamia nut ice cream with a chocolate cookie crust. I'm not a chocolate fan, but even I can't resist a taste of this tropical treat. There's nothing special about this pie at first taste, but it's quintessentially MAUI, and you have to get it. When you're at Kimo's, it's just what you do. In short, I'd never want to miss out on a meal at Kimo's, but I wouldn't race back there, either. read more

I was a waitress myself and have high standards - this girl is great Had to visit twice on our visit - calamari to die for - it's steak not tentacles in a macadamia but crust - worth every penny!!! I went earlier here today with my parents n ordered the Baked Mahi Mahi, while they ordered the Cheeseburger Meal that I was able to taste as well. My fish order was very delicious, high quality, juicy and even better than the one I had at Duke's. The fish itself was so flavorful without being boring or too fishy. It was so easy to cut and the sauce was salty and sour to the right amount. The rice was blended with multiple ingredients holding a nice texture and interesting flavor. I took a few bites of my mom's burger n it was really delicious with a very well seasoned n beefy flavor to it full of juiciness and such. We also got a Strawberry Lava Colada to each sip from n it was very tasty, fruity, creamy, cold and almost like a dessert. The little carrot cake muffins that came in the beginning were really delicious too n got some extra one togo to share for later. They were like really soft, very juicy spiced cakes with no nuts also similar to a dessert pretty much. I had one n as they each did. Great Vibes!! Randomly stumbled to Kimos as it was one of the highly rated restaurants in my area. I'm glad I went here!!! There was a long wait for a party of 1, 45mins-1hr so I elected for bar seating, got seated right away!!! I decided to get a lava flow since I wasn't driving. Wow!!!!!! The lava flow was amazingly great!! Not to sweet and can barely taste the alcohol. I ordered the fish tacos and the hula pie. I had no idea what the hula pie, but saw everyone on yelp rave about it. Even though I had gelato before and I was stuffed, I ordered it anyway. Be warned, it's HUGE. It's pretty much an ice cream cake, but so freakin good. I was able to finish at least 3/4, which I thought was pretty good for being super stuffed. The ambiance was on point too. Caught the best sunset on the patio with live music. This is one of my favorite spots in all of Maui. One of the things I worry about with her why is that a lot of ocean properties don't necessarily have the best food, but this isn't the case. They're dessert is absolutely amazing and the calamari was just the right tenderness. The Kalua pork was a bit salty, but since it's in lettuce wraps, it's not too bad because it offsets. It was easy getting a reservation and the hostess was really nice and definitely one of the better views in all of Maui in my opinion. I can't wait to go back someday. read more

My family and I were looking for a place for dinner on a Tuesday evening and came across Kimo's. We got there around 6PM and were surprised to hear that there was no wait time. We shared the macadamia nut calamari, kalua pork lettuce wrap, baked kimo style, and 14 oz prime rib. The calamari was extremely soft and did not have the texture of traditional calamari. The macadamia nut couldn't be tasted either (6/10). The kalua pork lettuce wraps were flavorful and light. (8.5/10). The baked kimo style was mahi mahi the day we went and it was delicious. (8/10). The prime rib was surprisingly good and I'm not a huge steak fan. We had it medium rare and were a little thrown off when the steak looked nearly uncooked. But you could not tell at all while you were eating it. The steak was tender and juicy and had a side of mashed potatoes. My only complaint is that the proportion of mashed potatoes to steak was extremely off. There was a tiny pile of mashed potatoes while the steak nearly covered the entire dish (9/10). The view from the patio is stunning and overlooks neighboring islands. We were lucky that there was the most beautiful sunset as we were eating. Our waiter (Carissa, I believe?) was the absolute sweetest and was very patient, helpful, and sweet. We've eaten here on many Maui trips and for good reason, the food and view are really great. With that said, it's a pricey restaurant and generally requires reservations to get in at a decent time. I know that we are coming out of a pandemic when things were hard for those in the service industry- but I believe there's a certain standard that should be met at a nice restaurant like Kimo's. In my opinion our server really missed the beat. He wasn't very friendly, and every interaction with him felt as if he was rolling his eyes at us... and actually one time I'm pretty sure he actually did... I'll be honest. Hubby and I dined here on our last night in Maui, and we were disappointed that this was the only night we dined here! We were walking a long front street the night before trying to figure out what we wanted for dinner, and came across Kimo's. There was an hour and a half wait, so we decided to make reservations for the next night. On the night of our reservation, we arrived and were promptly seated. The initial table we were sat, had the sun blasting me. So I asked if I could move to the table right next to us since there was a shade curtain, and they allowed us to. Our waiter was very attentive during our entire dinner, and we were there for about 2 and a half hours!! Our drink order was taken, and banana bread was brought to our table. I was already won over with the delicious banana bread!! I was going all out on my vacation, and was really sad that only two were brought out! I'm sure had I asked for more, they would have brought some out!! But I didn't want to spoil my dinner! Hubby and I bother decided to order the Filet Mignon, and I added the lobster tail. Let me tell you, the food was delicious! The steak was cooked perfectly (medium) and the lobster tail was tender. Not crunchy like some other places I've had lobster. Bathroom was atrocious! For such a big place, you would expect a big bathroom. This was not the case. My mama is on my vacation with me as well as my mother-in-law. We went to Kimo's not thinking we would need a reservation, which was my first mistake. But besides the fact, after waiting at the bar with my mama, who in a wheelchair, we got a table. The table was upstairs. So I quickly make sure that we will get a table downstairs so it's easier for my mama who is not able to get out of her chair. They fix this very quickly though. Onto the bathroom that was the tightest bathroom I have ever been in in my 53 years of long life. I know I will not complain because I was able to use the facilities, but it was extremely extremely tight. The food was OK. For such a busy and rustling place, you would think that the food would be a little better, but it was OK. I got the fish tacos which were Ok, but the fish was sort of too big for the shell. My mom I got the burger she absolutely loved it. It did make her very much backed up after the fact of eating. The ambience of the place was busy. Our friends M & T had suggested Kimo's for the view and it did not disappoint. They are literally located on the water and the views were amazing not to mention being able to hear the sounds of the waves breaking nearby in this open air restaurant. Parking was challenging, there was no available street parking so we had to find a parking lot and pay. It was $4 for 8 hours so I would recommend if you go to plan to stay and take advantage of your parking and check out the outlets and cute main street area. Maybe we will get to next time... Our party of 4 had a brief wait and then we were seated. N ordered the fish tacos and I ordered their Hawaiian burger. The pineapple and terriyaki sauce on the burger were delicious.
