This is one of my favorite spots in Queens and especially if I'm in Rockaway!!! They have literally the best Mediterranean food I've ever had. Their falafel, chicken shawarma and their sambusa with spinach and mushroom are all to die for. As I walked by Kimo's, the delicious smells and the friendliness and hospitality of the man behind the counter drew my friends and I into the space. The man behind the counter was Michail, the chef and co-owner. He was promoting his food with pride, and you can tell he cooks with love in his heart. He is of Greek and Egyptian descent, so naturally his Mediterranean Cuisine is purely authentic. I ordered the Lamb Shank with sides, and a Mezze Platter to share with my group. We went to the back to grab a table and we were so pleased to see how beautiful and expansive it was! There was plenty of room for us and our surfboards. Half of the backyard had sand on the floor and tables with umbrellas; it was like being on the beach! The other half was covered with a slanted roof, which protected us when it started to rain. Chef Michail brought the food out to us personally and wished us bon appetit. The food was DELICIOUS!!! The meat of the lamb shank was so tender, tasteful and juicy, and it just came off the bone easily. All sides and mezze were flavorful and rich. We thoroughly enjoyed everything we ate and the ambience around us. On our way out, I thanked the cooks in the kitchen and gave them compliments. They told me to thank Chef Michail; that all praises were due to him. They held the Chef in high regard and stated that he treats his staff very well; signs of a true, good leader, and a good employer and businessman. Much respect to Chef Michail and his staff! I've worked in restaurants for over a decade, I am a native New Yorker with eclectic tastes, and I know good food. I also know that when the Chef loves his cooking and his staff, the love is shared with the patrons and the community through the service and the food. Bravo Chef Michail and Kimo's! We had a terrific lunch here yesterday. The backyard is a delightful setting to enjoy this terrific food. Our group had the moussaka, pastichio, stuffed felafel etc. All delicious. This place is just like a Mediterranean Chipotle. You are able to customize your wraps and bowls to your liking. They have many options for food, including vegan options. My favorite protein is the Chicken Adena Kebab. It is so flavorful and pulls apart easily! The lentils are great, and so is the feta cheese! Truly wished I could give them zero stars! After the beach around 7:15 pm I wanted to grab something light to eat. My boyfriend and I were excited to see there was a Mediterranean Restaurant nearby. It's post-covid and the restaurant was completely emptied. We went in to review the menu, my boyfriend in the meantime used the restroom. I decided I wanted soup, hummus with flatbread and baklava for dessert. My boyfriend comes out the bathroom and reviews the menu as I asked the staff if they had soup. No soup. As my boyfriend reviews the menu I went to use the restroom. I come out and we decide to check out another restaurant nearby. Hopefully one that has soup! Meanwhile this all happened literally within 6 mins. As we walk out the manager or owner yells "thanks for only using the bathroom" with an attitude. I was truly offended and explained that I indeed wanted to buy something but they weren't offering what I wanted from the menu. The owner was very dismissive and AGAIN with an attitude said "get out of here" and used his hand as for me to shoot out. What the heck!! I wasn't even inside the restaurant. He was talking to me as I'm on the sidewalk. Treating me so horribly. My boyfriend was right next to me and told him to watch his mouth. The owner ( or what perceived to be the owner) kept mouthing off to my boyfriend and they exchanged a few words. This place is disgusting and disrespectful. There was no need for it. I want to support businesses that value their customers!! Good food or not they don't deserve your money. As long as that man is there ( the one with the scratch on his right eye) they don't deserve your money. No restaurant owner is worthy enough to treat people/ customers that way. We weren't even greeted when we went there. Not a hello or anything. If my intentions were to only used the restroom best believe I would of asked permission. I'm that kind of person! And if they would of had what I wanted that's written on there menu I would of gladly made a purchased. But honestly I'm glad they didn't have what I wanted because the level of disrespect me and my boyfriend received was unnecessary!! Delicious Mediterranean fare! While back visiting family I decided to try this. I had a chicken shawarma bowl with baba ganoush, tabouli, and stuffed grape leaves, topped off with tahini. I also enjoyed trying ful medame, a tasty fava bean stew with garlic, onion, lemon juice, peppers, cumin and tahini. I capped it off for desert with galaktoboureko, a yummy confection of custard and honey wrapped in phyllo. All this accompanied by lively Arabic music, enhancing its authenticity and atmosphere. Incredible. I had a pita with marinated grilled chicken, garbanzo salad, fried onions, artichoke hearts and tahini. Blown away by the little crispy delicious fried onions. They try to charge one dollar for a cup of water. Maybe they to conserve plastic but then just get paper cups. That really rubbed me the wrong way- I've never been charged a dollar for tap water in my life. My favorite restaurant! Everything I've tried is amazing. You can taste the quality and freshness of every ingredient making each meal the perfect balance of healthy but filling. The service is also unmatched, I am always greeted with warm smiles. I was counting down the days for Kimo's to reopen after an unfortunate fire that had them closed for a few months. Excellent, authentic spicing, large portions, beautiful casual rear patio -- sink our feet into the sand while gnawing on falafel marshes stuffed with flavorful garlic eggplant and harissa. Or perhaps the hawawshi -- handmade crusty dough stuffed with lamb and beef mince. The host and staff are friendly, engaging and happy to explain anything on the menu. Sit in the back and watch the A train go by while lapsing into the sun n' surf motif.
