Its hard to come across a really great Thai place but this by far exceeds expectations. Why you say??? O.O well let me explain it to you by interpret dance!!!!!! Or I can just tell you about it in the following paragraphs. Yes let's do that one. Lol. Atmosphere: Whoa.. its tiny, I mean tiny. Jesus's babysitter this place is a small restaurant and for some reason I'm ok with this. The place packs a ton of cultural art on the walls and decorations. (Which its welcoming to see art on the walls, instead of an old outdated calendar and wires coming out of a wall. [Dont ask where this was, because I swore I saw someone selling a squirrel to somebody else. Good tacos tho!]) It does have a an open window and the reflection of light illuminates the restuarant very well as a contrast of the colors of the wall it almost compliments the restaurant. (This is the same guy that wrestled his poodle to wipe pee of his paw! O.O [He won]) The bathroom is located next to the front/cash register/hostess place. Its tiny, with little light. (I could not find the light. Lol so I was sitting in the dark. Quite to say it was welcoming but i was self conscious if anyone was going to hear me. [My advice, just hold it.]) Customer Service: Was that of casual and relaxing. The lady was very nice and professional. (Like Faun showing you 101 on the forest of Midmar.) Wait time was quick (although I think we got lucky.) Service was quick and always at earshot. (Due to how close everything was.) Quite the least, it was a pleasurable visit. Food was out very shortly. Food/Drinks: Presentation was by far more than I expected. (But this is a guy that takes out pizza rolls and puts it in the microwave for 10 mins and expects them to look like the box image. [But why would they lie to me?!?! Spitting lizards! That's blasphemy!]) It was an art honestly. The mini burritos (which was like spring rolls) was like if heaven rented and apartment in my mouth with a low income. The curry melted in my mouth and I swear I saw how I would die in the future. In which I was content. (I mean getting into a fight with a turtle seems like a way to go! [I know.. it's pretty shellfish of me to die in such a glorious way!]) With combination of dessert and luscious beer. My stomach raised a white flag. (Defeated but content with life!) Conclusion: Did you ever want to go seat in a tiny restaurant and small bathroom space so everyone hears your ever forbidden sounds that should be ex out in Disney movies??? ._. Ordered takeout from Kinara... it was excellent. The process is pretty easy, you can order what you want online, pay for it online, and then just call when you're out front and they bring it out. You can even order a day or two in advance and just tell them what time you want to pick it up. We got Pad Thai, Pork and Basil, Yellow Chicken Curry, and Prawn Drunken Noodles. They were all excellent and we spent the rest of the eve arguing which dish was best. Lastly... I will say this from past experience, these are some of the nicest people in town. We've been going to Kinara for probably 8 years, and they always treated us great. This is one of the restaurants I want to see survive the downturn. Support them if you can. read more

Delicious food. I had the Khao Kloog. Large portions, affordable price and fast service, and an intimate dining experience. Ask for the hot chili's tho. It adds so much! Hot Thai chili's marinated in fish sauce...it's perfect. The lunch special allows you to add a spring roll for a buck fifty, which is worth it as well. For my 100th review it only seems fitting that I review a Thai restaurant which has been my thing lately. On my first trip to Kinara Thai and having a awesome experience at My Thai Bistro, I couldn't have imagined that I would have another 5 star experience a week later. They hit all the marks on decor, service and food. I had the Ginger & Crimini Mushrooms Beef ( slices of beef and fresh ginger sautéed with green onions, white onions and crimini mushrooms). All the components were in harmony with each other, none of them overpowering the others. For $1.00 you add a salad or appetizer to your meal. I had the Blue Crab Wonton and Spring roll. Both were excellent. One of the best Thai places in Portland and I'm making it a point to get to as many as I can. read more

Kinara Thai was quite scrumptious. We had the following three items: Fresh Spring Rolls for the appetizer, the drunken noodles with chicken, & Kinara fried rice. Everything was naturally gluten free except for the fried rice which we got without soy sauce in it which made it GF. The fresh spring rolls consisted of rice flour sheet with tofu, veggies, and noodles inside, with peanut plum sauce. I need to learn to do these myself, I heard it's not hard. The sauce perhaps may be trickiest to make so tasty. What I would do for my own though is use bean sprouts rather than noodles, crunchy and less carby! The drunken noodles were my favorite. The sauce was just right. Some places sometimes make their sauce too sweet or just put too much of it but this was just perfect. The noodles tender, the sprouts crunchy and fresh, the onions cooked to perfection and sweet. YUM. The fried rice included 3 shrimp, pork and chicken. This dish was good, but slightly less flavorful, could be the lack of soy in it since we needed GF for my friend. I liked it but a few more veggies would have made it ideal and I couldn't taste or see much egg if any. The chicken was more tender than the pork, but the pork still had a good flavor. The shrimp were juicy & plump. Prices are comparable to other Thai restaurants and the portions large like most as well I like the location, Goose Hollow is a cute area. Inside was so cozy and quaint, they have 2 sections. One small room followed by a little hallway that leads to another dining room. This is why the place appears so long when looking at the store front. The service was great, the waitress attentive to our needs. Overall a great experience! read more

I've continued to frequent Kinara for the past 7 years and it's been that long since my original review. I'm happy to report, the wonderful flavors and warm hospitality have not diminished. Ordered crab fried rice (my fave) for my bday delivery dinner on a Tuesday and the minute I opened the bag it stunk and I knew something was wrong with the crab. Inedible. Had to get a refund. My wife's drunken noodles were fine, Tom yum soup was edible but weirdly sweet- not edible enough to save it from the trash, mind you. Would never bother ordering from here again. Also now put off of my beloved crab fried rice for who knows how long! Now have to find something else to order and spend another $200000 in delivery fees because of this nasty food. read more

Really sweet little Thai restaurant on a pretty busy street though you'd never know it once you walk in. Tidy, elegant and restrained, it has the calming feel of a spa. There are a couple of very small dining rooms and the tables are situated for maximum privacy. I came for lunch on a weekday and there were a lot of take out orders but it didn't interfere with my dining room experience at all. The menu has the standards as well as some items I'd not seen and I ordered one of those, a prawns with curry and egg dish with brown rice. For $1 you can add an appetizer so I got the vegetarian dumplings which were fantastic. Three hot fried dumplings were filled with green onion, carrot and some kind of tofu concoction. It came with this rich dark sauce reminiscent of coffee and soy sauce. Delicious! The hot tea was a jasmine black tea mix which gave it a little extra oomph over the usual Asian hot tea. Moments later, I had my meal. It came with a steak knife which was a little funny as there was nothing to cut. The brown rice was mushy. Not sure if it got overcooked or it doesn't get served often but I mostly didn't eat it. The dish was really good. Out of my comfort zone so it wasn't a favorite but I'm glad I tried something new. The curry really was delightful and didn't overpower the vegetables or the shrimp. The service was wonderfully attentive so I paid and was on my way. A very nice respite from a busy day. read more

My sisters favorite little Thai spot became my favorite spot today! My first time visiting this quaint little restaurant. It may be small in size but it's flavors explode in your mouth; without a doubt I experienced a "mouthwatering orgasm"! I wish I would've written the name of the entre I chose. It was a delicious concoction of tender pork that literally falls off the bone, lemongrass, roasted red peppers, roasted eggplant, capers, a leafy green drizzled with a scrumptious sauce. Yummy!!! Kinara is tucked away into an oddly shaped little space, but mitigates the potential disadvantage by tipping more towards creating an atmosphere that you might describe as 'snug' or even 'charming.' The tables are a bit small as a result, fair warning, but the service is snappy, so you're never left juggling serviceware. The food is tasty and well-priced - I've thoroughly enjoyed everything I've tried, including all the Thai staples (salad rolls, pad see ew, pad thai, etc.) Do yourself a favour if you're in the neighborhood (or maybe even if you're not) - give Kinara a try. The dishes are very hit and miss, a few are consistently good and a few are consistently bad. The service is quick and the staff are friendly. The biggest problem is the waiting area. It's WAY TOO SMALL. There's barely enough space for 2 people to stand. This becomes a problem when a bigger crowd are all trying to check on their to-go orders. The last time we were there an older women went feral and started a verbal altercation with us because she didn't want to wait in line. At the same time, a big group of younger teens kept cutting in line to get their food before others waiting before them, and we all had to wait every time one of them came in and cut. Staff didn't do anything about either situation. Because of all of this, we'll choose other Thai places from now one. read more

Kind staff and cozy interior. While the prices are reasonable for the area, the food lacks authentic flavor. We ordered everything hot and it was very mild. Sadly too salty to start to add any chilis after the fact :/ lots of cabbage used as a filler. Highlights were the basil fried rice with shrimp (shrimp are huge!!) and the gra prow grob (crispy basil was a great touch). 1. spicy dumplings were not spicy. they came sitting in a pool of chili oil, which was too sweet, which caused them to be soggy, these were not edible. 2. Tom yum soup didn't have the lemongrass taste, didn't have spice, was WAY too sweet, so gross, I couldn't eat it. 3. drunken noodles, was okay. it was lacking taste. chicken was bland and gamey tasting, and extremely chewy. 4. crispy rolls were okay. 5. the price was a little high for everything, but the drunken noodles. Enjoyed eating lunch here on a Thursday. I ordered a roll and pineapple fried rice. Both were good and the service was great. We had a group of 5 and they were able to split the bill without issue. The place is a bit tight when it comes to room. Especially with their takeout area right at the front. They had a bunch of high schoolers picking up and it felt a bit strange. read more

The Pad See Ew was flavorful and they did a good job of cooking the noodles so they were 99% covered with sauce--my biggest pet peeve is those flavorless noodles from lazy cooking. Had dinner here last night and absolutely loved it. The chicken yellow curry is well-spiced but not too spicy, allowing you to enjoy lots of different flavors without burning your mouth off. The wine selection is limited but everything pairs well with noodles and curry. The ambiance is top-notch; it's a cozy little bistro with soft lighting. The portions are good, but you'll probably need to buy an extra scoop of rice for a dollar which is no hassle really because the rice is well-prepared, and the entrees are very affordable. After much debate about which Thai place to try, my friend and I set off for Kinara. Due to my friend and I not being familiar with the area, and some funky GPS business, we somehow ended up at the zoo, but luckily found our way back to Kinara. We drove around in a few circles and finally settled on a parking spot. Despite the challenge of actually getting to the tucked away restaurant, it was totally worth it. This is a cozy place with beautiful decor. There is a front room and a back room. We were led through the crowded front room to the totally empty back room, which we had all to ourselves for the entire meal! We decided to share two dishes, and settled on the Drunken Noodles and one of the specials, which was prawns in a red curry. When our food came out, I could tell that they aren't exactly made to be shared. They were beautifully plated, which sort of made me feel like a barbarian as I scooped spoonfuls of each dish onto a separate plate. But really? How could I not try everything? The food was fantastic. Phenomenal. The sort of food that you put in your mouth and start nodding and making weird grunting noises because it's so good that you need to somehow convey that, but you can't stop eating it. Kinara is more refined and cozy (along with the slightly higher price tag to match) than the average hole in the wall where I would usually find authentic Thai cuisine. But still you are surrounded by quintessential Thai favorites; some with the tiniest unique twists that by no means compromise the well balanced flavors. Being in from out of town (where I don't have any Thai restaurant, let alone a decent one), I wanted to get some good SE Asian fare. Kinara sounded right up my alley from the other reviews. My wife and I were underwhelmed, to say the least. We got the Lettuce Wrap Larb (with pork), and although it was the tastiest thing we got, the meat was tough and dry, and there were no side condiments that usually come with lettuce wraps. Plus even the sour/spicy/salty sauce was very pedestrian. My Grilled Prawn Salad was totally underwhelming, with overcooked prawns and a very unimpressive vinaigrette. My wife's Basil Chili Pork came in an overly sweet sauce that lacked complexity and the pork was tough as leather. If Kinara is what passes as good Thai in Portland, I feel sorry for Portlanders. The High-Lights: -Really impressed with the freshness and quality of their greens, from the spring rolls to the entrees we got (chicken and peppers and pad thai). -The noodles in the pad thai were perfection. -The service was on point. -Prices are very reasonable. -Decor is casual and pretty. The Low-Lights: -Street parking only, which was a bit difficult. -The place is small. We sat in the front so I'm not sure how big the back room is, but it was tight. I was also staring at the restroom door, which is smack in the middle of the front room by the hostess desk.
