The food was tasty. Nothing else was fun or pleasant. The service was bored, or just totally disinterested in us or our experience there. Asked for salt and was curtly told it was on the condiment table, which it was not. I wanted to ask again but the server (?) had already sat back down at her laptop at the bar and I didn't feel comfortable interrupting her as she was clearly not interested. I'm not even sure she was working to be honest. If she wasn't, then thanks for the help, if she was, wtf. The point is, we couldn't tell. French press is given to you at the table but you have to get up if you want milk or sugar. You can't take the milk with you because it's huge and for everyone. Condiments are across the room and crusty on top We were not given knives for spreading butter or jam on toast, but we were given one to "stir the coffee grounds with". We ended up sharing it and wiping it off between uses. The tables are close to the fridges so if someone grabs a drink you get blasted with ice cold air. The grocery selection here is laughably random. (Six squeeze jars of tahini, a tiny box of Raisin Bran, and three cans of beans?) No one checked on us. We had to ask for butter for toast, napkins, salt, ya know, the basics...the fact that we got only some of those things is laughably bad. This place seems like it could be so cool, but it just ended up being sort of sad. No thanks, Kinda Tropical. Restaurant prices with gas station service and elementary school business sense. Great service, lady behind the bar was also waitress & cashier (the place was empty) and was super friendly. Sadly, Bibimbap was super plain and dry, not cohesive at all, served with raw radishes and jasmine rice(they definitely need to consider using short grain for a dish like this)... only part that stood out was the kimchi. No salt in this dish either so be sure to make use of the condiments across the bar. Waffle was cute, surprisingly tasty & good texture for being gluten free! Drip coffee was strong and served piping hot, enjoyed that. This place is a bit grungy and dirty but does make up for it with its character(lots of plants, quirky decor, large patio). Don't recommend placing an order online. I placed my order at 5:53 from work. When I arrived one staff member was attentive saying "it's almost out" then later asking if I needed plastic wear. Wish I could give this place 0 stars. Came here on a Sunday night at 10:00pm and knew that they closed at midnight. When ordering my drink at the bar the bartender rudely said "do you want to keep your tab open or close it. We close at midnight" in a super condescending tone. Then we went to sit at a table and a cockroach started crawling up the bench behind me so we all stood up naturally to get it to go away and the bartender just started at us like we were crazy and didn't help at all. Then 11:15 comes around and another bartender was coming up to our table aggressively taking our glasses and when we said thank you he just walks away. We felt super uncomfortable at this point and we're finishing our drinks to leave when they turned off their music and started playing very ominous hell sounds on the speakers. it wasn't music. it was very obvious they wanted us gone. I work in the restaurant industry so I know how annoying it is when people stay after close but it wasn't even 11:30 yet. If you're considering this place just don't. Look at the other 1 star reviews about how awful the staff is and listen to them. read more

We had the avocado toast (excellent!); wings (top notch, sesame seeds added an extra nice flavor), burgers (cooked nicely, very fresh condiments), salad (very fresh, ginger dressing was superb); each dish was very tasty. Stopped here on my way home to avoid rush hour traffic. It looks like an old abandoned gas station/convenience store on the outside so I accidentally passed it . We walked in not knowing what to expect. Right when you walk in there is a little stop n go area to pick up beer /soda/ snacks (a little bit of produce ?) So we headed to the bar in the back for a drink . They have a decent selection of beer (draft and bottle) and wine/cocktails. We both grabbed a beer and also tried the strawberry frosé. There were two women working the bar. One seemed very out of it and tired. The other one was more polite and helped us out. I ordered some beef skewers , house made pickles and a couple tostadas. The beef skewers were lackluster but the house made pickles were delicious!! I really enjoyed the cabbage / tomatillo added in ! The best part we had was the tostada . We loved it so much we ordered another one. Simple concept but really great flavors all around. They have a nice outdoor patio area but it was way too hot out to enjoy for me :( In conclusion - I like the place but it was a little too hip for me to visit often. This place is so unassuming and rogue when you first look at it. I created this account to review Kinda Tropical because it was Kinda Awful. My girlfriend and I walked in and up to the counter and were immediately ignored. We noticed one of the bartenders being friendly to people on the other side of the bar so we thought we were in the wrong spot to order. Nope. When we walked over to his side, he served three other patrons before us. He barely said a word while my girlfriend ordered food and drinks. We waited approximately 30 minutes for our food and it never came (others were served who arrived after us). We asked about the food and he said that the order never got put in, even though he was entering each order on a touch screen as we ordered. We said to cancel the food and paid for the beers then left and he couldn't have cared less. This team of employees only seems interested in hanging out with their friends and not providing a welcoming atmosphere. I would give Kinda Tropical 0 stars if I could. Worst service I have had in the 13 years I have lived in Austin. Hands down. read more

As my brother and I pulled up to the corner of this establishment, the Uber driver turned and asked "Did you use the right address?" and I could not blame him for the inquiry, the place looked like a gas station. I can not express how glad I was that we actually went inside. This is a one of a kind place, with a unique atmosphere to match! I got a Modelo, cause they had it on tap, and an order of avocado toast (both in the picture) the lighting is amazing, they sell squares and plants and have a plethora of adult beverages in the fridge. The back patio area is also amazing. If I ever make it back to Austin then I will be giving this place a visit. Hats off to the creative minds who put this establishment together! read more

The food is so good, not sure why I am surprised by that. There's good vegan/vegetarian options as well as meat options (their fried shrimp is amazing). I love that you can get a fried or soft boiled egg on the side of everything too. So far, I have had the veggie burger, the fried shrimp bowl, the spring bowl (breakfast only I think), the sesame chicken salad, and the cucumber ricotta toast. I came here for my first time yesterday. It doesn't look like much on the outside, and the parking situation is a little precarious. Upon entering, the inside was well-kept and cool. The bar tender offered friendly service and was prompt to make my drink. The mango margarita was the perfect amount of sweet and spicy. The tamari glazed wings were also quick in coming out to my table and were delicious. I came for lunch during the week, so it was quiet and not very busy. LOVE this place! You can get a salad with egg and kimchi for breakfast which is right up my alley. My husband got the rice bowl with bacon and the bacon was perfectly crispy and not overly fatty. I just think that, given all of the great spots in the Austin area, even on the east side alone, there are many better options, with much better food, and much better environments. I had the Jamaican Jerk Chicken and it was decent. A plate with half a chicken, black beans, cabbage, and some basic rice. Really, nothing special, and not worth $10 in my opinion. This place is awesome, and I'm glad it opened back up! Very retro m/80s neon wave vibe with solid drinks and food. My favorite part was that they had DJs spinning metal. The also regularly have vintage auto and motorcycle shows here. There always seems to be something really cool going on when I drive by this place.
