It's a cool spot and I enjoyed my evening here, but I probably won't be ordering cocktails here anymore. I ordered a Paloma, which I paid $10 + tip for. It came in one of those little plastic wine cups filled to the brim with ice, so I got maybe 5 sips out of it. The Paloma was nice, but not worth $2+ per sip. I love this weird little east side gem. I kept seeing the name popping up on my yelp suggesting Kinda tropical for brunch/coffee and I was like where even is that place?? Oh it's literally at the end of my street, I just didn't realize this quirky what seems to be former gas station is a hipster oasis. The Vietnamese coffee was delicious, my avocado toast was feasibly priced and honestly an avo-toast I'd order again (you can't say this about all places), and I'm sure we will wander back in another day to peruse their expansive beer selection. read more

Good drinks, good vibes, good food. I had the fried shrimp last night and the frozen piña colada, both were delicious. My buddy had a salad and liked it. She also liked her frozen spicy margarita. We sat in the back with blankets but have also enjoyed sitting inside, too! Food came out fast and hot. Have also enjoyed the jackfruit sandwich and the fries (not the curly fries, though they look good). The sandwich was great, the fries were okay. Would recommend this place. Had higher expectations for this place.. Like some other reviews on here, we found the staff to be incredibly rude and pretentious and acted as if we were burdening them by placing an order. Kinda Tropical is genuine. There is soul that gives it something special that many other businesses in Austin are lacking. It's a labor of love, and this can be felt in the entire vibe of your whole experience. I've only known about it for a month, but I've already been in 5 times. I love the food and beer/wine selection. I love that it's my local corner store where I can grab ice cream/cigarettes when I need a guilty pleasure and other odds and ends when I don't want to do a big grocery store shop. Another plus, it's super dog friendly with a great fenced in patio out back. I'm a born and raised Austinite, and Kinda Tropical feels like the Austin I grew up with. This is the place is everything I love about Austin. The food is always fresh, the people are always nice & the space is always clean. It's the first place I recommend to anyone stopping through town looking for a place to eat. They have great vegan & vegetarian options as well. If that's your thing, try their Rainbow bowl and add avocado & black beans to it. They'll replace the separate fish sauce they give you with lemon vinaigrette if you ask. The patio and decor are really nice and the employees are all super chill. It also a serves as a convenience store and bar that sometimes hosts shows or parties. A true gem of a place. read more

We came one rainey Saturday afternoon after hearing great things this new spot from a friend. We were surprised on how low key the signage was, because you could easily pass it up. Which would follow up with my next assessment, it's pretty Hipster. When you walk in, there's a vibe from everyone that they are kinda "too cool" for you. I wouldn't even call it a store either because there were maybe 5 different beer and beverage selections to chose from, random dry food on a shelf, and whatever they served at the bar. Sparse décor (which was fine) and aloof service made it an OK experience. I will say this, their prices were pretty good. Beer and cocktails ranged from $5-10, and their food looked good. This place is so great, I have recently discovered this gem and while being hesitant to start venturing out after 4 months of isolation, I have found a little haven to escape to and have a cocktail and wonderful food. And I say this with so much hesitation and respect for what restaurant workers are going through, however, much to my dismay I discovered that the hospitality ends when your tab closes. A friend and I met for drinks, dropped 100 dollars, went to water the last hour we were there, and were so reminded several times that we were not wanted. Oh, and the kicker was her dog peeing on a bush next to our table and someone came over to pour a glass of water over it, which is fundamentally fine, but his comments were not. They might as well just told us to get the #uc/k out because you're no longer giving us money. So disappointed, off my list. read more

I took a group of 5 friends here based off of a friends suggestion for a cool hang out spot. Loved the space and the DJ this past Sunday night, however the bartender service was absolutely terrible. From the moment we walked up to the bar it was as though he couldn't have been bothered to help us with anything...like doing his job at even a minimum level. I asked for a food menu and he tossed it in my direction without any acknowledgement or even a tiny bit of customer service. He was very sharp with each of us individually as we ordered very basic things, for no apparent reason. The food and ambiance were nice however that particular bartender was so abrasive to be around none of my group has any interest in revisiting this spot. If you visit this spot and don't want to leave feeling like someone just shit on your day, I would avoid the bartender with the braids. read more

First of all this place is quirky very quirky, second of all the food is beyond amazing and the menu has been different every time that I have there. Yes you order at the bar-food and drinks. The music is kind of like a glitch in a music box, by that I mean it's dealers choice and you never know what you are in for. The jerk chicken is delicious and great for sharing. Not the biggest salad person but their big salad with the grapefruit dressing is a great tasty healthy bowl of goodness. I'm a big fan of the mint watermelon salad but it seems to be a rotational dish that isn't always on the menu. Just had the wild boar tostada and really enjoyed it. They have something like daily skewers and while small they are often preeetty tasty. It definitely presents itself as quite the scene. I don't know who these folks are raving about amazing service. I've been here twice and I got aloof service both times, like I was a mild inconvenience for them. I just, I absolutely hate that, because I work in the service industry, have for years, and nothin sucks more than when the server is rude to you. Last time I thought maybe they were having an awful day, but nope, same experience as last time. It's just the worst. Definitely hipster, which is not necessarily a bad word in itself, but this is the kind of hipster that people use in a negative light. It sucks because it is so so close to my house. This place kills it. Love at first bite. They take care of the details, the taste is refreshing and left me thinking "I never thought of doing that but I'm glad they did." Gluten free and vegan options. Personable staff, patio where dogs are welcome, and open dining area with small grocery section. I was starving, it was late, and I rolled into Kinda Tropical. The lamb wonton soup special was TRULY SPECIAL! I also shared the avocado toast and a tostado. This is not a typical tostado. It was beautiful topped with radish and sprouts. The ingredients were fresh and crisp, simply delightful. Most of my favorite restaurants in town use a lot of butter and animal fat, which is delicious but heavy. On a regular day I just want something delicious and healthy. Kinda Tropical is my new favorite, and they serve food late! read more

I've gone to Kinda Tropical at least 4 times. The drinks are good and you always run into a friend but the customer service is terrible. On all my visits there is a different server or bartender and each one makes me like I'm a bother. It's a cool atmosphere but I still believe in good customer service and they just don't have it. If you are good with then you'll be okay but after the 4th visit, I'm over it. read more

Stopped in for a quick drink. Super dope frozen margarita, rad atmosphere just a nice chill spot for a drink. Headed down the road for a drink at hard luck, also great. 2 min after we get to hard luck the bartender from tropical shows up and hands me $60 that fell outta my pocket at the bar. This dude chased us down the street to give me my cash back. Above and beyond customer service, can't even say how rad these folks for doing that. Kinda Tropical Kinda Magical My wife and I come here often. My wife loves the michelada. I love the food especially the tacos they serve on Tuesdays. The cooks are extremely creative and there's always different specials coming out of the kitchen. The jerk chicken is especially delicious. Went there last Sunday with my wife for a late lunch and ended up staying all day and night because there was a pop-up shop hosted by ATM gallery along with screen-printing and some DJs that were from Detroit started spinning records. It had a great vibe and atmosphere. The staff were friendly and quick. We ended up staying until they closed because they have a fine selection of wine and the music the DJs were playing was so good we couldn't stop dancing. I should note that they don't usually have pop-up shops and host DJs on Sundays it was just kinda magical the one Sunday we went there. A wholesome establishment, highly recommended. read more
