The ambiance was nice. The service was just ok. There was some grace given because of it being a large party on a Sunday at brunch . However, we had to ask multiple times for the same items and had to chase our waiter down a few times . The food was ok I had the brisket hash which was the brisket was more of an after thought and appeared in the dish minimally. I did hear that the chicken in waffles was pretty good from another guest. Do not go here expecting to vibe with your kinfolk! We had a nice dinner experience at Kinfolk. Staff was friendly but not that attentive. It took a while for us to out in the order, however, our waiter did suggest some great dishes. We shared deviled eggs, crab dip, side of gumbo and the tandoori chicken. Deviled eggs were slightly salty but still good. We thought the gumbo was perfect for a cooler night and well flavorful. We could have gone without the crab dip, it was just ok. Tandoori chicken was well seasoned and cooked to perfection! Visited Kinfolk this past Memorial Day weekend for the first time. I went with three other friends and had an OK time. The customer service was EXCELLENT but the food was just OK. I was kind of disappointed that they didn't serve things like smoked collard greens or yams and its supposed to be a Southern Kitchen. We also ordered one of those drink towers and the drinks were watered down with ice ($70 btw). Between the four people in my party, the bill was about $400 before tip and I don't believe we ordered that much. The best thing I tasted was the burnt tips and the dirty and/or Cajun rice. That's just my opinion but definitely go and try it for yourself. read more

Who doesn't love BBQ? I know I do, so when planning a pre-show dinner at the WHARF, neither of us had tried Kinfolk so Kinfolk it is! It's SOOO refreshing having a GF who doesn't have any food restrictions.. Lol! High end BBQ/Southern cuisine is tricky/risky but if Yardbird pulled it off let's see what Kinfolk can do. The restaurant is definitely appealing to the eye, with ample indoor and outdoor seating and a very large bar. Getting back to high-end, for instance, a rack of ribs is going for a whopping $55 with no sides (ala carte). The beef brisket price is on par with the ribs. All that said, the most egregious price was $8 for one piece of cornbread. I was blown away. The food was good but so is Famous Dave's! Service was completely off. We are both oyster lovers so we couldn't wait to try the fried oysters. Once our meals came we had to tell our server to take the oysters off our bill since they never came :(!!! The restaurant business is a HARD business and if you don't get repeat business, I have no idea how you'll survive. The restaurant's name being in the drink was a nice touch -pretty creative. The crab cakes & mashed potatoes were pretty good (4/5). And the oysters were okay (3/5). They did an amazing job at blending the outdoor dining experience with the surrounding Wharf life. I almost forgot I was at a restaurant until the check came by keeping on top of the service, I never had to look for the waiter or ask for help. I think the most interesting part of the meal was the large croutons in the salad, which were soft on the inside with a crunchy toasted outside. Believe me, they had to be amazing to still have my attention. Also, the deviled eggs had a spicy mustard in them which was a little unexpected, and not at all unwelcome. The food was great, but the service was not. Our server took an extraordinarily long time putting our orders in to the handheld device. Then, because the drinks we ordered a new drinks, when he brought them over to the table, he couldn't remember which drink was which. And he attempted to rectify that situation by getting a straw to taste the drinks. With my friends, saw him walking back to our table with his straw in his hand she said no is there another way you can figure out whose drink is who, maybe by double checking with the bartender, which is which. And also after a meal was over, he started clearing plates at the exact same time as we were putting food into take away containers. And he cleared the plates by piling them up in front of us on our table. This process took an extraordinarily long time, it was very loud, it was very intrusive and it was very disruptive. There was no reason for him to pile the plates on top of each other while we were still sitting there. Not to mention that the restaurant was extremely empty and he could've put them on the table beside us. But he spent several seconds organizing and re-organizing the larger plates on the bottom and the smaller plates on top so he could more easily carry them all to the kitchen in one trip. And he did all of this while we were sitting there. He had a very very nice personality and was professional in every other aspect. This was also annoying because the payment process in and of itself, with the use of the handheld devices, is already intrusive and disruptive. So to extend the period of time that he was at our table doing something that was so loud and time consuming put a damper on the dinner that I was having with my best friend. read more

Yet another windy/rainy date night found us searching for something new. We found ourselves at the Wharf. This area has undergone so many changes since our childhood that we didn't know what restaurant to pick. I've heard mixed reviews about Kinfolk, but ultimately, we ended up picking the first choice to get us out of the rain. I'm glad we did. Upon entrance you could smell wood burning, we were greeted warmly and seated promptly. I ordered the crab dip, charred broccoli, Cajun rice, with tandoori chicken. All were flavorful although I found the Cajun rice dry. The star was the crab dip! I even got some to go with extra sourdough. My mister got the crab cake sandwich and said he enjoyed it and would get it again. (High praise for him.) read more

I'm quite embarrassed that I brought my Southern aunt here. You would think it's a soul food place but not a drop of seasoning was in the overpriced food. We HAD TO ASK for salt and pepper because wasn't available and clearly the cooking staff didn't have it on hand either. When we asked for the seasoning, we were looked at like we were crazy. The waiter who brought the seasoning didn't even verbally acknowledge us. Aside from the hostesses, the staff was rude and seemed like they didn't want to be there. The best part of the meal was getting to watch people walk past the window. I bet they were having a better time than we were. After experiencing the restaurant, the name feels quite disrespectful. It was not a proper homage to Black home style cooking nor to Black people. I wonder what kin they were referring to. If you're looking for a nice brunch spot, walk to this restaurant and then keep walking because some of the other restaurants that surround this one offer a wonderful brunch menu. For an appetizer I had the deviled eggs and burnt ends! For meal I had the tandoori chicken which had the right amount of flavor and spice with fries. The grits were actually made well and tasty but together the combination wasn't good. The fried green tomatoes didn't have much flavor. I expect high prices at tourist sites but don't mind if the food is good. That was not the case when we ate there last Sunday. I got the omlette which must have been only one egg & no cheese which covered the breakfast potatoes which did taste Ok. But when I asked for salt & pepper and butter for my half slice of toast the waiter brought 2 more slices of cold toast and honey butter. No salt or pepper. My wife got the Bananas Foster pancakes which she said were ok but very little topping on 3 what are usually called Silver Dollar Pancakes because that's how small they were.I also made the mistake of ordering a black coffee which was probably the worst I have had in my life and cost $5. Hubby really liked his catfish. But for it to be an entree it definitely needed sides. It could be on the bbq meat menu because it was not a full entree. Sides: nothing to brag about. I should have read the "about" section because I wonder what part of the "South" this represents. Coleslaw okay. Potato salad not bad, but not good either. Charred broccoli too heavy on the lemon, for me. Hubby enjoyed as is. The grits were actually smooth and cheesy. Seemed to be the best side we ordered. I came to Kinfolk since I've only had southern BBQ only a handful of times in my life. I ordered food to go, but the limited service I had at the bar was great. The host and the servers were very friendly. I got half a pound of the brisket for about $23 and Mac and cheese for about 12$. The brisket was pretty good, but was honestly a tad bit too salty. It also came with half a slice of toast, pickles and onions, and some sauces (bbq and mustard), though honestly the brisket was flavorful enough on its own and didn't really need anything else. The Mac and cheese was alright. Overall the food was good, but a bit pricey. The brisket (as well as some of their other meats) are actually halal, so that's a nice bonus as well. read more

I wish I could rate this place with less than one star, but this will do. I was super excited to come, after seeing the prices online thinking "conveniently priced". Received our food and noted that the portion sizes were extremely small but was cooked well. 6 wings for $17, i thought to myself.. That's a rip off. 4 deviled eggs for $10 - rip off. A medium size bowl of pasta for $36 - rip off. 2 McDonald size fish squares for $36- rip off. Immediately I became dissatisfied with prices in relation to what is provided. Then to get a bill, with mandatory DC tax, Service Charges (to offset the price of food) and Gratuity, is another rip off. I would suggest having this included with the price of the entree, but that would surely put you out of business when you have to share those prices on line. Then not to mention the drinks.. $18 for Titos and club soda. Any drink priced over $15 is robbing people and this can not true of fine dining. There was nothing fine about this place. You can barely hear and it is not because the music was loud, the acoustics in the space just creates a very loud atmosphere. I could barely hear my family talking and neither could the waiter, which is why she got the order wrong on more than one occasion. The service was good, but the food left much to be desired. I came for Mother's Day with great anticipation for a Southern-style meal as a native Southern person from Tennessee. I tried to manage my expectations but waited excitedly because I'd seen the pictures on social media. The location is fantastic, with stunning water views and a soothing vibe. I enjoyed the decor. The bar was expensive and seemed to have all of the top bourbons and spirits a person could ask for to quench your thirst and please the palate. The service was good; my server, Kevin, did a great job of ensuring we understood the menu and options available. The food came out relatively quickly, likely due to the volume of people and the need to turn over tables to accommodate the Mother's Day crowd. We ordered biscuits with pepper jelly, pork skins with cheese, and crab dip for appetizers. The pork skins do not come in season, and since my son has a dairy allergy, he could not enjoy the pimento cheese. Therefore, he was left with a very fresh. I'll be it, not season pork skin. The biscuits came out more in the shape and density of scones. They were neither fluffy nor flaky, but they did have a decent peace, and the pepper jelly was a good compliment for the biscuit. The crab dip was hot, but they did not toast the sourdough bread enough; instead, it only had grill marks on the bread, and there was an insufficient amount of bread for the amount of crab dip we received. For the main entrées, we ordered gumbo catfish chicken with corn and macaroni and cheese for the side and the shrimp and grits. The gumbo came out and was not warm at all. It had to be sent back the catfish seasoning, and that was an overall theme of all of the food. While the shrimp and grits while the shrimp were seasoned well, the grits had a very offputting aftertaste and were not a sufficient amount for the price that was paid. The fried chicken seemed to be fried in bulk because the underside was quite soggy, while the top presentation portion looked to be well-browned. The accompanying hot honey was a nice touch and added a depth of flavor, but the macaroni and cheese looked like it came directly from a box. There was no breadcrumb or texture, and it lacked creaminess, which is the signature of macaroni and cheese. We re-ordered a shrimp cocktail instead of the gumbo, and while the shrimp cocktail tasted excellent, The presentation was ill-balanced because the bowl had so much ice and was so large that it made the colossal shrimp look small. Despite Kara's (the dining room manager's best efforts because during her walk around, she could sense the displeasure of the food at our table and did offer to get us the shrimp cocktail and remove the gumbo as I explained to her and hoped that management would take to heart. This was not a service issue but a lack of seasoning and culinary skills in the kitchen. While I would like to believe that I was being a bit critical, my above review was underscored by comments from the table on my left and right about their dining experience. One person received a single beef rib that did not look juicy or tender and cost $50. Another patron received their food and again returned it due to a lack of seasoning. While the cocktails look good and the food is, the taste and value are not worth the over $230 spent, including a tip for this dining experience. read more

So came here for a nice dinner and try something new. It's a Thursday in the summer and it's insane with parking. Garage was beyond full and so was the street so I'm risking street parking in a zone for the place! But this place is so cute! The managers are so attentive! Cara with a C overheard my needs and helped me without even being asked. Rocko is our server and hers so great! He has great customer service- knows the menu, had great suggestions and was checking on us and dealing with a large party but was able to move all about. He definitely did an amazing job making us feel welcome. The views are impeccable too. Sit on that patio part. Their happy hour is 11-6 at the bar Monday- Friday and 11-3 in the dining room. Ima be back for some happy hour. There's good music playing in the back and enjoy the breeze sitting by that catwalk I've heard mixed reviews but idk yall everything here was a hit to me. All the food was good and flavorful. All hands were on deck to assist us and honestly start to finish it was lit. My soul was full and stomach fuller. Would definitely come back! I came to Kinfolk with three friends for a birthday brunch, and unfortunately, our experience left a lot to be desired. We were seated pretty quickly, and while there was a lunch/brunch crowd, the restaurant wasn't full. Several tables were still open. Our server started by asking if we wanted drinks beyond water. One friend ordered a berry iced tea and I got an unsweetened iced tea. We were both given plain unsweetened iced teas with no berry flavor or syrup in sight. When it came time to order food, I asked about the avocado toast. I'm vegetarian and noticed it didn't have the "V" symbol that other vegetarian dishes had. I asked the server what made it non-vegetarian. He said he wasn't sure and would check. I told him that if it wasn't vegetarian, I'd just take the omelet (which was marked vegetarian). He said that was fine. Later, when he came back with our drinks, he didn't say anything about the avocado toast. I had to prompt him and ask again what made it non-vegetarian. That's when he told me it had an egg on it. I said, "Oh, eggs are fine -- I eat those," and reminded him I would've been okay with the omelet too. At that point, he told me he had already asked the kitchen to remove the egg. I found it odd that he made that change without confirming with me first or coming back with the information. I told him it was okay if the egg came out late -- I still wanted it. Another friend ordered the banana foster French toast but asked for it without the banana topping. He just wanted plain French toast with syrup, butter, and powdered sugar. The server said that was doable. About 10 to 15 minutes later, food started to arrive. The two friends who ordered standard items thought their meals were fine -- not great, but not terrible. My avocado toast tasted good, but I never received the egg I had asked for. The friend who ordered the French toast got a plate with just four lukewarm slices and no syrup, no butter, and no powdered sugar. The food runner brought the plate, so we asked them for the missing items, but we didn't receive them for another 10 minutes despite asking multiple people. When our server finally returned, my friend hadn't touched the food. He explained that he was still waiting for the missing items. The server said he'd take the plate back and bring a new one. That took 15 more minutes, and when the French toast came back, it was unclear if it was a fresh plate or the same one just reheated. It still tasted undercooked and wasn't great, though my friend ate a few bites and boxed the rest. Oddly, after we boxed it up, another woman (possibly a manager) brought out another plate of French toast, this time with butter and syrup already on it. When we told her it had already been brought out, she seemed confused. That made us think the original plate had just been reheated instead of replaced. Since it was my friend's birthday, the server brought over a slice of cake with a sparkler, which was a sweet gesture. However, when we asked for the bill, he said, "We covered the cake for you," which felt unnecessary to point out. We didn't order the cake, and it felt odd that he acted like it was a generous comp. Despite the issues with the French toast -- multiple delays, missing components, and questionable freshness -- we were still charged for it. Overall, the service was disorganized, slow, and disappointing, I wouldn't recommend coming here based on our visit. read more
