Fat Andy's -- First Visit Review…read more Fat Andy's has taken to social media to promote their product, and the posts feature Andrew, who must be our very own Fat Andy. We decided to take an early lunch and head over to Santa Fe to give the place a go. The establishment presents as clean and friendly, with a bit of an unfinished, "there is more to come" vibe. It feels like a good startup should. Andy was manning the counter and seemed to genuinely enjoy engaging with customers as they ordered. He pointed out the specials a few times as we grazed the menu selections. The hot pastrami had its very own sign, so I took that as a sign. I like a good pastrami. We picked out a table and waited for our food. After a short while, we heard our name called and I retrieved the wrapped sandwiches. The missus had the half turkey, and I went with the full-size hot pastrami. Now, before I go too far, my first instinct was to order the monster signature sandwich called "The Fat Andy." I did have that pang of guilt at first, thinking I really didn't want to be Fat Jeff anymore, so I thought better of it. The sandwiches were good. The ingredients were fresh, the lettuce was crisp, and the peppers on my pastrami were absolutely a winner. No disappointment there at all. The portions were healthy, and the side of pasta I chose was spot on with its mix of ingredients and the tang of the dressing. The sandwich bread, or hoagie rolls, were solid and appeared to be fresh. All of that being said, we found Fat Andy's to be a good value. For some critique -- and I go back to not ordering the signature sandwich, which looked from the menu description to have some special touches -- the sandwiches we ordered on this first visit were made with the same type of ingredients one can buy at most deli counters featuring Boar's Head products. The bread was good, but not fancy, and did not seem to contain anything especially unique that made it feel like a signature sandwich experience. Now don't get me wrong. Even with great ingredients, there is skill in putting together a good sandwich, so I am not discounting them on where they source their products. But a true deli sandwich experience requires something that makes the place stand out just a little. Aside from the great personality Andy brings to his customers, the sandwiches on this trip did not make me feel like they stood above most other good deli sandwiches. That said, I live a very short drive from Andy's, and I hope to watch it grow. I also hope to experience more of the fun Andy seems to be having by sharing his food and his creations with the community. I encourage everyone to give Andy a shout and tell him Jeff sent you. And next time, I'm going in for the Fat Jeff... Uhh, I meant to say "The Fat Andy."

Our server was very friendly. She gave us extra time to look over the menu and kept our glasses full. We got the Grilled Chicken Sandwich and Fish Tacos. Both really good choices. Cooked and seasoned perfectly. The Sandwich came with French Fries and the tacos came with rice and beans. If you're in Texas City swing by and try them out. Easy parking plus they have a full bar.

But once you arrive, you're in for a real culinary trip south of the border. I dropped in very eager to try one of their taco plates. While the pictures on the restaurant's Facebook page had already piqued my appetite, I wanted to see for myself if they were the real deal. So, for my first meal here, I ordered the Pastor Street Tacos. Like at any good Mexican restaurant, my meal began with chips and salsa. It's an unwritten rule of mine that if the complimentary chips and salsa are good, the main dishes will be just as good, if not better. Fortunately, that rule holds true for Mr. Taco. I tried both the red and green salsas, which were truly spicy--a definite plus in my book. The tacos arrived after a few minutes. While the menu said they were miniature--there were four in total--they were a perfect portion. Anchored by marinated pork and topped with fresh onions and cilantro on corn tortillas, the tacos were accompanied by a bean-filled consomme and rice. With just one bite, I imagined myself on the streets of Guadalajara or Monterey; the authenticity was simply evident. I occasionally dipped the tacos in the consomme, which I could describe as a bit earthy and salty. Overall, the meal was incredibly enjoyable. This dish is a prime candidate for a go-to order on a return visit. I was very well taken care of by our waiter, Samuel. The meal's spiciness had me quickly finishing my water, but he kept the glasses coming without me having to ask. While working on the meal, I was parked in front of one of the business's massive TVs, which were tuned to the Astros game. That said, I consider Mr. Taco an ideal place to catch a game. It helps that it's open until 10 p.m.--or 2 a.m. on the weekends--though a staff member told me that's assuming they're not having a slow night. Price-wise, I'd say the costs are quite fair. My platter was about $13, which would be roughly three dollars more elsewhere.

The sandwiches were absolutely delicious. I was also very impressed that they prepared the gluten-free sandwiches in separate containers from the rest of the order. I ordered the B Major, and unfortunately I didn't enjoy it. My main issue was the meat--it tasted low quality to me, and the texture was off. There was a good amount of it, but overall it just didn't work for me and I ended up not really finishing the sandwich. Based on my order alone, I would rate it around 3 stars. My husband ordered the Reuben and, on the other hand, he really enjoyed his and had no complaints, which is part of why I've given a slightly higher overall rating. The service and atmosphere were fine, but based on my experience with the food, I personally wouldn't return. There are just too many other places on our list to try, and this one didn't stand out enough for me to revisit. review edit- response to establishment- I didn't bring my concerns to anyone's attention at the time because this was a to-go order, and I ate it in the car after leaving. I feel that a 4-star review is more than fair based on my personal experience. My comments were simply honest feedback about what I ordered and are intended to reflect my individual experience.

They were hopping on a Tuesday afternoon for lunch! It's homestyle diner food meets Luby's. They have daily specials and the daily menu on a chalkboard on the wall. It's cafeteria-style service and the board with the options is located right at the buffet line. They had several hot options as well as sandwiches and other choices. THE FOOD WAS ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS!! I had a club sandwich on perfectly toasted bread with a side of fries. The fries were really good. Crisp on the outside and perfectly soft inside. My boyfriend had the chicken fried steak with brown gravy (brown or white gravy were the options), mashed potatoes, cornbread, and macaroni & cheese. Had a bite of everything on his plate and it just screamed "Grandma Southern Kitchen"-that's how good it was. Fantastic diner/comfort food. Service was exceptional.
