Early morning Fourth of July found us with just a few places to choose from at 6:30 AM. Waffle House is my youngest daughter's favorite breakfast place so we all gave in as it was just down the street from our hotel and also open. They had just finished mopping one side of the place so it was clean floor that side, but the other side was just a mess with all kinds of debris on the floor and at the entrance to the kitchen area. Saw one table notice some leftover food on their table and asked for the table to be wiped down, only to have the server hand him a rag with the expectation that he wipe it himself.... Also saw several tables (us included) where the server just laid the plates down at the end of the table and walked off. Oddly, they were very nice and cordial people working there, they just didn't offer full service in some respects. Food came out within 10-12 minutes of ordering and everything was right except I had asked for my hash browns to be topped (add chili) and it didn't come out that way. Usually that is done by the waitress after the other hash brown ingredients have been added. Not sure how they do it here but they missed it. However, they were able to fix it pretty quickly to my satisfaction. I wouldn't say the place was gross, but just not a clean feeling here. I wanted to give them a good review, but . . . I haven't been to a Waffle House for many years; in fact, the last one I visited was probably in Oklahoma. So, today, I decided to try the one in Galveston. ordered the biggest breakfast, so I could try it all, including eggs, bacon, waffles, hash browns, and even biscuits! The restaurant was clean. That was good. I did sit under the speaker which was playing music. Much too loud for me, but I did have hearing aids on. So it might have been my hearing aids! Ricayla was my server. She took my order, got my coffee, and in no time brought me the eggs, bacon, hash browns and biscuits. She said the waffles were on the way. I ate what I wanted of the egg platter and then waited and waited. I finally called one of the staff over and asked. Ricayla came by and said it had been forgotten. I watched them put the waffle mix on the waffle iron and then everyone disappeared! I waited some more. I finally got the waffle but it was definitely a longer wait than I wanted. As for the food, it was typical Waffle House. I wish they would learn to use a different oil. It has a funny taste to it. Nothing fancy about this place but the service is friendly - exactly what you would expect from a small country diner! The food was decently priced and it comes out exactly as you expect, no frills, no surprises! We actually liked the eggs, bacon, Hashbrowns... buttery, filling, crispy, exactly as you ordered it! Stopped here while in town since many rave about Waffle House. The actual seating area and parking lot are quite small. I am not sure if it's because it's near a hotel or what, but I'm used to these being bigger. There was a brief wait however, after about 10 minutes, we were seated. I can say service is fast. After ordering, we didn't wait long before the food arrived. I ordered the All Star which included a waffle, eggs, hash browns, toast and bacon. Everything was delicious but the bacon was cooked a little too long or didn't look done enough. They also give you more than enough food. Overall, I can say my experience here was okay. Although I usually look at reviews before visiting a place, I totally did not look at the reviews here. I'm glad I did not. Our experience was a great one. There was a line of people waiting when we walked up, but as soon as we walked into the establishment, they were quickly seated, and because it was only my husband and I dining, we were also seated quickly. Our waitress, Brianna was sweet and very efficient in taking our orders. Our food came out very fast and it was made to perfection. I usually always have to send my bacon back because it is undercooked and then when they take it back they overcook it and burn it but at this location during this experience, that did not happen. It came out cooked to my liking! I've been in plenty of waffle house, restaurants and they have been pretty nasty in the area behind the counter but this one was pretty clean compared to others I have been in. This is one of the establishments where I can truly say to go in and see for yourself instead of reading the negative reviews others have left based on their experiences. Maybe they have read those and have taken steps to improve the way the restaurant is ran because my experience during my stay in Galveston was a 10 out of 10. The food was really good, I've always loved waffle house. This location was probably one of the worst I've been to. Most tables and the floors really needed to be cleaned and because it was really slow, it should not have been that dirty. The cooks were great but my service was not, the waitress spent most of our time there openly on her phone, we didn't get refills and were unable to order dessert because she was so preoccupied. Worth the visit, but, lower your expectations a bit. It was a Sunday evening around 10pm and I stopped by with my brother and a friend for a late night bite. Now forewarning, only thing open on the Island this late seemed to be Wafflehouse, And Hooters (which was closing soon anyway). Beyond it being late, which grace should be given for slow service, the place seems to be poorly managed, which impacts service and food quality. Why poorly managed? Well, all you had to do was see the morale and listen to the complaints of the staff to understand they are overworked and under appreciated. The 2 stars is more for the service and a bit for the food. One complaint in general is Wafflehouse is no longer really Waffle's but these think crepe things that resemble waffles. Gone are the days of the thick fluffy deep waffles. Expect these thin crepe/pancake waffle looking things, and only 1, at least IHOP gives you more than one pancake for the price. Wafflehouse, decreased significantly the portion but kept the price. No Love there! Beyond the above, the food was average and the place not clean as only two employees were there and it appears teamwork was not a word used, but, more of you have your job and your customers, and I got mine. From the discussion of the staff, scheduling is horrible and people do not reliably come in. Service itself was impacted as if management does not care, employees dont care. So expect some outright yelling back and forth between employees. To continue, when the server finally gets to our table after a 30 minute wait, and asks for our order, and then rolls their eyes because we mentioned we don't know yet as we were never brought menus, well, you can imagine things are not well. Even more so, when after bringing out our food, and looks at us and says "ok that's everything" and quickly walks away, then rolls her eyes and huffs when we gently waved to her and once she comes over we mentioned she never brought silverware, so we all get quickly handed 3 forks, no knife, spoon napkin set but only a fork. I appreciate its not server attitude but server self frustration from being overworked to a point of realizing their performance is not what one wants. Beyond the above, Coffee service was slow, but it was expected, as it was a late night for everyone. Iveralk I was appreciative for food, regardless of everything. We all have bad days. Location wasn't the best & parking was limited, but I pulled in as another car was leaving, so I was able to find something fairly close. We were able to walk in & right to a table. Both my kids mentioned waffles and bacon, so the waitress flipped the menu & pointed directly to a waffle & bacon kids combo for $5.50 that was perfect for them. Food was out quick. Visited this location while on a texas vacation from back home in California. Came here around 2am or so. The staff were all great!!!! Went up and BEYOND the call of duty for me and my g/f who were stranded without any uber cars available. We talked to everyone and it felt like family. They took care of us. Brandi, amber, Mason, and sam. I would open up my home for these guys on any day if needed! They made our stay in gavelstone worth everything and so much more!!! Typically I give a standard three stars for chain restaurants when I feel like everything was good. On this visit, it deserves an extra star for the work environment. All the workers got along and were laughing. I felt like they really enjoyed their job. If you hadn't noticed, the server will read the items you ordered to the cooks and then they start making the magic happen. Communication has to be open and clear since they work as a team. When we got here around 10AM on a Monday, the place was packed. There are a couple of chairs near the entrance where you can wait until your table is ready. Our wait was around eight minutes or so. Not bad. I was hangry I didn't even snap any photos of my food. I ordered the biscuits and gravy, waffle and country ham. Everything was delicious as expected. We'd never been to a Waffle house... While the staff was nice and helpful. Nothing felt very clean. There were men sitting on the dirty kitchen floor fixing something, some of the staff's uniforms looked like they had not been washed the whole week. It was just "eeeks"... and the atmosphere was just.... odd. It's a small restaurant with little booths, so if you are in a party larger than 4 you'll need to sit at separate tables... I had my doubts going here for breakfast. It's next to a super 8 motel and an unremarkable Chinese buffet. Staff was friendly and attentive from the start.
