Kip's is either packed or empty. Either way, I never feel quite comfortable. They have some decent beer options on tap, but mixed drinks are not their strong point. Some of their interesting specials like 20 cent wings end way too early. I don't think too many people wander in for an early dinner. They have karaoke on some nights and a pool table, which prove to be adequate distractions. Their music is also generally OK. By far the most scary thing about Kip's are the bathrooms though. The male toilet doesn't even have a proper stall. The dreggy college bar atmosphere and the just-turned-21 crowd could be the factors turning me off, but perhaps I am simply getting old. 21st Birthday Alcohol Run - Bar #2: After leaving Raleigh's, my friends decided to walk me down to Kip's. I've only known Kip's as the so-so typical American food place with an unexpected Asian side to it downstairs. That's beside the point though. I was served a shot of something for free, but they never told me what the hell it was. Tasted a bit like rum, but not really. Kind of shady, but could've just been a misunderstanding on a highly busy night. We ordered some Jager bombs, which came very quickly despite the loads of people trying to get drinks, so that made up for the mysterious shot. I'm glad they have a dancefloor, but I wasn't feeling it at all. Music was pretty shitty and there weren't too many people dancing at the peak of the night. That pretty much explains it all. Came here on a Saturday night around 9:30 after eatting dinner at Gypsy's. It was quite dead but we decided to get a pitcher which turned into a few pitchers. We rented dice and cards from the bar and basically stayed here the next 2-3 hours. Around 10, they started to pump the music up and around 10:30ish more people started to roll into the building. By 11ish they turned on a fog machine and by 11:30 the whole place was super misty and packed with all the college kids. At this point my group was fist pumping and crumping all over the dance floor til we decided we were hungry before grabbing our jackets and headed out. Overall I'd give this place a 3, but the bartenders are really friendly and nice; plus they will come by and take away empty pitchers, empty glasses and gave us napkins to wipe down our mess. read more

This is an outstanding estblishment with an extremely classy vibe. I love coming here with my parents, as the food and service is amazing. After eating we hit the dance floor and ballroom dance with eachother until we drop! I also come here with friends for a really nice, chill night. The customers at this destination are also all extremely pleasant people and are super respectful. Safe to say the Kip's crowd is my favorite crowd in the bay. Kip's attracts extremely down to earth people who are very respectful and chill. I have never had an unpleasant experience here. The one tip I may leave you with my fellow kips patron is if you order a fishbowl, don't share it. This is a very divey bar, it's floors are sticky, it's bathrooms are filthy, and it's cocktails are way too damn sweet, but then again; what more could you expect from a bar that caters to the college crowd? What can I say, IT'S KIPS! There's not much to it because there doesn't need to be. It's a fun, good music-playing, sticky floored dive kind of bar that's perfect for students at Cal. I think they must have a DJ every night and the music and dance floor are always fire. Sundays and Wednesdays are karaoke nights, so get ready. It gets so fun! Kips has mostly decently priced drinks and food that are pretty good. Two things I have beef with though: the price of jaegar bombs ($9) and the fish bowl; it's so sweet and is pretty hard to drink because it's like drinking $30 of sugar water. Don't get me wrong. the fish bowl does the job (if you don't share with too many people), but it's SO sweet! All in all, Kips is the perfect spot for a night out in Berkeley. Been here a few times and have consistently received good service. A bartender came to me relatively quickly even when the bar was full (Im used to bartenders ignoring me assuming I'm too young and/or just looking for the restroom). This Saturday evening was a bit different. Walked in to a very uncrowded bar. In fact I'm #2 at the bar. No customer service. I watch all 2 bartenders walk to the back. (All dressed up for Halloween). This means they dont want to deal with me at all. So still no service. Finally they came back and still no greeting, no "can i help you," nothing. Very interesting. "Moona" apparently is the bartender. First time seeing or being served by her. Sadly her Halloween costume was giving better service than she was. The crowd that hangs here ranges from frat guys to oakland folk as well as your typical Berkeley student. Certain drinks are super cheap. But be careful, because of cheap prices, a lot of people here have accidents. There is always a huge line for the restroom. There is an area to sit down, and area to stand (by the bar), and then an area for a dancefloor. The dancefloor is only sometimes used. They also have Karaoke here. There was a short line to get in, but it was a Friday night and it wasn't too bad. I was packed like a sardine when I got inside. The drinks are really nasty and watered down. College bars 101: floors will be sticky, crowd will be shady, bathrooms will be nasty. So how in the world can a college bar be worth 4 stars? CHEAP BEER ON DRAFT! My favorite night to come is on Thursday nights, domestics are $2.50/pint and crafts are $3/pint. They have pretty much all the common brands and brews. If you're planning on playing drinking games with that price, it's not bad at all. There's a little dance floor next to the pool tables in the back. At times they play decent picks, so it's a nice replacement for a cheap dance floor like what Blake's used to have on Thursdays. They do serve food opposite from the bar for burgers and fries. I don't really recommend any of those unless you are super drunk and needed munchies right away. Or maybe you're a big fan of soggy looking fries, then go ahead too. And girls, be sure to use the restroom when there is no lines, even if you're not in a big hurry to go. They only have one stall for women, and imagine the girl in front of you went in to yack and all and you really need to pee, you're already the head of the line yet you have to wait for that chick who can't hold her alcohol. I mean, part of me feels like I should be giving Kip's 5 stars for the nostalgia factor alone. In college I remember showing a fake ID here that looked NOTHING like me, and it was totally cool. However, it really is just a pretty standard-ish dive bar (good and bad). For a divier bar they do have a pretty extensive beer selection. I can't remember the last time I ordered anything other than beer from here, but I think they still do the fish bowl style drinks that are loaded with sugar and cheap liquor. As far as the bar itself, it's dark, lots of old furniture that's pretty run down, and smells like mop water. There is quite a bit of seating, and the back part always seems to change it's set-up. Sometimes it's open and at other times there appears to be tables and chairs. I think at times there's a DJ and that's when they keep it open for dancing. They also have a fun photo booth for drunken pictures! In all my times coming here I can't EVER remember having the food here, but it doesn't look good, and I've heard it isn't. My group and I got two fish bowls - rum and tequila. Both were blue and I think rum is the better tasting one. $35 for each fish bowl which I think is reasonable when split amongst others. We paid a $5 cover which was odd to me because the other times I've visited, I never paid cover. The drinks are okay. Didn't ever pay 45$ for a fish bowl that has pinnacle in it . What makes Kips a bar I won't be returning to is the fact that they demanded a state ID (as opposed to a student ID) to borrow pieces to a game. Upon returning the game pieces, we were told that the ID was never turned in and eventually the little man with the glasses ADMITTED he lost it. After a tough talk I demanded $40 for the replacement (he tried to offer a free drink ) he said he would like for it. To which my response was "when you find it, I'll bring the $40 back". Wish I could give zero stars. I came here with friends after a concert down the street. The bouncer took it upon himself to scrutinize my ID. I'm from Arizona, and he decided to think my ID was fake. Of course I challenge him because my ID is real (but looks fake), but I'm 25 years old. He threatens to "confiscate" my ID. He threatens to call the cops. I tell him go ahead! Came here once after Thalassa because the wait at the pool hall was super long. Drinks were decently priced. They have one pool table and a small dance floor. Not too busy with people but it wasn't completely dead. Half of the place looks like a hang out for frat boys drink and hang out but the other corner is dark and more grungy lounge/dance floor area. Second time I came here it was super packed like you were at a club. Super packed and you had to shove your way through. No room to move. I felt like I was being herded like cattle. So random going in here last Friday night after the Deadulus show at UC Berkeley. My friend and I went to scour a bar and we past by Kip's where we saw a bunch of people on the street next to Kip's. We thought that if we couldn't find any other bars, we would double back to Kip's and it happened to be that we didn't find any other bars around so we ended going back to Kip's We went up some stairs, seeing that Kip's was located on the second floor and once inside, we saw that this place was crowded. Kip's is pretty small from what I saw. They have to places to seat, a pool table, small dance floor, and a bar area. Ordering drinking took a while seeing that there is only one bar but they Kip's did have 5-6 bartenders trying to help everyone out. The bartender that helped me out through out the night was really nice and was also cute. Kip's made our night because I saw that they had a little menu of their drink specials and a pitcher of PBR was only $7. So my friend and I had a pitcher each that night. A shot of Jameson was $6 from my calculation of buying 2 shots and a pitcher of PBR that came up to $20.
