Came here after reading some reviews of Yelp friends. Unfortunately, I was not as impressed as others who have reviewed Kirin. We came on a Tuesday evening. It was not crowded in the restaurant, but they were doing a hopping phone order business. It seemed like take out was 3/4 of their business. Service was a bit slow but polite and attentive. We ordered: Hot & sour soup - meh, more on the sweet side; Ginger beef with tofu - this was decent, could have used more ginger zing; Spare ribs - they were more sweet than spicy, well cooked; Pea pods with water chestnuts - pretty good. I have yet to find an outstanding Chinese restaurant in Sonoma County. Kirin is okay, but it is not someplace I will make a point to frequent. read more

Mongolian Beef was way too sweet and didn't have much umami flavor. Sweet and Sour chicken was a little watery and also very mono flavor (just sweet). The chow mein was average. The egg rolls were solid. read more

So disappointed to have to write this review of a restaurant I have gone to since it opened years ago. Recently the preparation of the food has gone down and I can't recommend or go back to eat there. As an example I ordered a salad and perhaps it had been washed but water spinner not used. We order takeout frequently from Kirin. For this town they're definitely a 4...if in Berkeley (where we lived before), they'd be a 3. We LOVE the "Pineapple Walnut Prawns" more than anything, but everything we've ordered is pretty good! Never ordered anything we didn't like! (The restaurant changed owners a few years ago, and unfortunately, it was better before. Too bad the new owners didn't buy the recipes when they bought the business. Although the food isn't bad, I'm frequently disappointed in this restaurants use of MSG and the quality of the food leading me to feeling sick after eating. I don't think that the food here is "clean" and am only committed to eating here for family dinners fortunately. I know a lot of individuals who love this place, so it disappoints me to not love it, but I'm clearly not the only one who feels their use of MSG is uncalled for and the food leaves one feeling sick. read more

I'm not a mean enough person to give a place a seriously negative star rating, but honestly I did not have a great experience here at all. Admittedly I only tried the hot and sour soup, but I'm a huge fan of Chinese food and this soup was just terrible. My girlfriend and I frequently bicker over who gets the last drops of a soup when we order it, but both of us didn't even have a second serving of this. The bamboo was clearly from a can, there was zero sour flavor, the broth was kinda thick and was oddly sweet. The shrimp tasted like straight up saltwater. Some friends recommended this place and I'm willing to try again because of that, but my first impression was a total F rating to be honest :( read more

I do not know where to begin first it was GrubHub then it was Karen and all my food was wrong and I do not know what to do GrubHub wouldn't help me and neither would kirin and I just can't use Grubhub or kirin ever again. I had lunch today with my sisters at Kirin. I know the restaurant was sold so I was anxious to see if there were any changes. I ordered Wor Won Ton soup. The soup was good. It contained carrots, zucchini, green onions, greens, and well-stuffed won tons. The broth was also tasty. So many times with Wor Won Ton soup the broth is tasteless but this was good. Both of my sisters had lunch specials. Even though the serving size was disappointing, they finished their meals. The lunch specials come with both fried rice and chow mein. The serving sizes were quite a bit smaller compared to the last owners. The restaurant was clean and service was friendly and quick. I will for sure go back. read more

Delicious Chinese food! Santa Rosa is lacking good Chinese restaurants, I'm glad to have found this one. It's in a very unassuming spot in a strip mall, but don't be fooled. Their food is amazing- love the fried rice and potstickers. The menu has all of the usual suspects and some sakes and good wines by the glass. Service is efficient and friendly. The restaurant itself is super clean and has a nice, warm atmosphere. They are always busy and I've noticed they do a sizable amount of orders to go. Whether you decide to eat in or take it to go, you won't be disappointed. read more

I come to this restaurant very often for a white. The current dish tastes not the same as before. I notice that there has been a change in cooking style. The food does not taste up to past standards. Please go back to the past way of cooking it! I notice that much long oil is added, which made it taste nasty and the aroma is not as good as the past. I had lunch here yesterday and it was pretty average Americanized Chinese food. I've had worse, but you can definitely do better around Santa Rosa. The only thing that stood out was the vegetable fried rice served with the lunch combination. It was very light and the bits of egg were fluffy and cooked perfectly. I wouldn't say it was great, but I'm always pleasantly surprised when fried rice isn't disgusting. When the nicest thing you can say about your Chinese meal is "Well, the rice was pretty good..." you know you're in trouble. I initially enjoyed the hot and sour soup, but then I discovered shrimp in the bottom of the container. Shrimp that was most definitely not fresh. You could say it was my fault for getting something with seafood in it on this restaurant's equivalent of a Monday, but the taste was putrid and I had to throw most of the soup away. Everything in the sweet and sour chicken, including the peppers and carrots, was mushy and almost flavorless. The chicken was cold despite the sauce being hot. Both of these things are a telltale sign that the food you're eating was frozen and came out of a microwave. That is not acceptable. Not anywhere, in any type of restaurant. Even the fortune cookie was stale and flavorless. It wasn't even sealed in anything. Just a sad little cookie out of what I assume was a bucket of sad little cookies, exposed to who even knows what over who even knows how long. Wasn't a huge deal, but I was also left waiting in the restaurant to pick up my food for about 15 minutes. Even though I arrived five minutes after they told me the pick-up would be ready. I also told the same guy 3 different times that I was there to pick up an order, which required me to then explain twice that I had already paid for the meal. I mean, they were busy and it didn't exactly ruin my day, but still. Like I said initially, if you want Chinese, you can do a lot better in this area. There's plenty of options. Personally, I wouldn't ever want to return to a place that I'm certain is microwaving their food. I can do that myself at home. read more

I have been to this eatery several times and have found it to be a perfectly serviceable Chinese food emporium. However today I had a rather disagreeable experience at lunch. Myself and a companion were waited on by Alex, who is an owner or manager. I asked if I could get a special accommodation due to diet restrictions. All I wanted was a portion of almond chicken, some brown rice and some steamed vegetables. I said that I would be willing to pay an upcharge if necessary. I did not want the white rice or chow mein that usually comes with the $8.50 lunch specials. Alex advised that they had not made the brown rice yet so that was not an option. It was 12 noon and brown rice is a regular menu item, so I am not sure why hey had not made it yet. Alex seemed confused by this request and insisted that the only way to accommodate my request was to order two separate lunch specials, but to hold the white rice and chow mein. They would have to charge me for two separate orders and charge me $17.00. I went ahead and paid the $17.00 and Alex served me two separate bowls of soup, which he placed rather indignantly in the center of the table. When it was time for the entrees, Alex brought me the almond chicken and vegetables on separate plates. I expect a restaurant to go out if its way to accommodate a customer's reasonable request. I don't mind paying a reasonable upcharge. But Alex seemed unwilling to make my experience easier. I found this perplexing. In a down economy in a restaurant that was not crowded you would think that the staff would go out of its way to accommodate a customer. Sadly, I don't think I will return to Kirin. read more

I recently moved to Santa Rosa from San Francisco and needed to find that one reliable Chinese Restaurant, so I decided to try Kirin after reading the yelp comments and already trying a different restaurant that was just ok. Comparing the food and the restaurant to what I read in the reviews, I was really disappointed. I guess i should have expected it was going to be more Americanized since we were the only Asian patrons and the menu was only in English. The beef chow fun was bland, barely had any soy sauce and did not look like it was pan fried at all. The Ma Po Tofu dish started out tasting good, but later on the tofu started to taste old like the plastic it was sitting in. We also had another meat dish, (I forgot what it is now) but that was ok. I remember it caught me off guard because it had a semi sweet sauce like Japanese Teriyaki or Sukiyaki. The staff was really polite and friendly, but I can't say I would go back again. read more

LOL... just wanna start with a LOL. Ok.. So work brought me to Santa Rosa (what a drive that was) and left me very hungry! After a little exploration we found a shopping center with a few options - Chinese, Pizza, Italian, Japanese and Bar-ish food. I was with Wilson C. and he was shocked as we sat down. Very busy BUT he was the only Chinese person in the whole place! It was also the first time he had looked at a Chinese menu with no Chinese on it. We ordered: Hot n Sour Soup Asparagus Beef Beef Chow Fun Lemon Chicken The soup came out and me being lame and allergic to seafood - I couldn't eat it because there was shrimp in it. The Asparagus Beef was pretty much Broccoli Beef with Asparagus subbed in - it was really good! I love Asparagus so how can you go wrong. The Lemon Chicken was REALLY lemony but not bad. The Chow Fun was the biggest surprise - we thought it would be the dry style but it came out wet - which is awesome! The food wasn't amazing but it was really good. The final thing that solidified Kirin as a 4 star review was the service. Our server brought me a bowl of soup made with no shrimp. I didn't ask or even gripe about the soup - it was my fault for not seeing it in the first place. He just brought it to be nice. I may never go back here cause its so far but I am glad I got a chance to try it because it was definitely an enjoyable dinner. read more

I was going to give this place 2 stars, but after just thinking about it a day later, I downgraded it. Yes, that bad, and here's the main reason why: the service. It wasn't friendly, for one thing. Even worse, when we were done eating, the check was brought to us, and it wasn't picked up for over twenty minutes. The ENTIRE time it was sitting at our table, 1 of the 2 employees was just chatting up at the front register with a couple that had finished their meal. The other employee had disappeared. We didn't go up to the register because we were still working on something (business lunch) but I did think it was inappropriate to be completely ignored for 20+ minutes for social reasons. Then after he finally came to pick up our check, we paid and when we went to leave (maybe 5 minutes later), we found we'd been locked in. The guy was sitting in the back of the restaurant and didn't even offer to open the front door when we went over to it. It's not THAT big of a deal, given that we could unlock it ourselves, but still. The food wasn't very good, either. We went for lunch, and the only genuinely good thing about this place was (according to my companion - I didn't try it) the Sichuan Crispy Beef. I had the spicy orange chicken and, I have to be honest, Panda Express does it better. The orange chicken was overly sweet and gloppy. The lunch plate also came with the following: fried rice, chow mein (?), crab rangoon, and hot & sour soup. The hot & sour soup was actually sweet-tasting to me, which I didn't like. Crab rangoons were okay, but not great. Noodles were overly soft and just had an okay flavor. The "fried" rice was probably the best thing on my plate by far, and it didn't seem fried - too soft, like everything else, though it had a tasty, chickeny flavor. I don't know if I'd come back. I have been to Kirin a couple of times, each time the food has been great and the service a little standoffish and rude. I have always been willing to look over that because of the good prices and food, but no more. A friend and I arrived at about 2:15. We walked into the restaurant and stood there waiting for someone to greet us. Finally a man walked up and whispered something very quietly. My friend had to say "what?" because we could not hear him. He then informed us that "we can do takeout but we cannot serve you, we close in 5 minutes". I work in a restaurant and if I ever treated a customer like that I would be fired. We honestly felt like beggars he was trying to shoo away. We immediately left. Skip this Chinese place and go to the one across the street next to Safeway. They were super nice and served us the lunch specials even though it was past the time. Been going here for nearly 10 years (since I moved out West) and have been always impressed with the food. The ambiance gives you a feel of a real family restaurant, the staff are always willing to answer questions, and have a great casual conversation about you. The food is phenomenal and always good. The Kirin beef is out of this world, but all the traditional dishes are also well above par. For the money, this is the best place for Chinese food in Sonoma County. My family and I have been coming to Kirin's for as long as I can remember. I don't go as often as I used to now that I don't live in the area, but always try to come back when I visit. First, always try to make a reservation or plan for a wait for a table. The restaurant is a good size, but they are very popular especially on the weekends. Also allow for plenty of time when placing a to go order by phone. It can take up to 45 minutes to pick up during peak hours. The family that runs the restaurant has always been very nice and accommodating. My parents ask for no MSG which they will do, as well as "light or no salt" which they will do too. If that wasn't enough, my sister and I are vegetarians so they also make an exception and do Sweet and Sour Tofu for us which isn't on the menu. I have never had a bad meal at Kirin's. Their Plain Wonton Chips are amazing, I love their Sweet and Sour Tofu and their Vegetable Chow Mein is the best I've ever had. (I have been getting these same items for the last 15+ years and they have remained delicious) I would definitely recommend stopping by when in the area. My boyfriend and I went in about 10 minutes before closing, and asked if we could do a takeout order. They accommodated us, but they didn't look happy about it. If they had said no, we would have accepted that and been on our way because we knew it was close to closing. We ordered the hot and sour soup and an beef and broccoli. We got home and pulled out our items. The soup looked like a hodgepodge of the day's leftovers. I started eating it when I noticed the shrimp in it, which my boyfriend is allergic to. Never have I ordered a hot and sour with shrimp in it, nor did I see a shrimp disclaimer advertised anywhere on the menu. After that, I was sure it was a mix of the leftover soups of the day. Met a friend for lunch today, after not having been to Kirin for several years. Sadly, I was disappointed. The restaurant is still quiet and lovely. We were able to talk easily during our lunch. They had lunch specials during the week between 11:30 and 2pm, for around $8-10. This included soup, appetizer, rice, fried rice and entree. I ordered the egg rolls for an appetizer while I waited for my friend to arrive. They are meatless, and arrived crispy and piping hot. Served with hot mustard and sweet/sour sauce. They were pretty good despite having barely any filling. Then ordered the small size sizzling rice soup, which was described as having 'shrimp and chicken'. The soup arrived hot, and flavorful. That was the best part about it. Overall, it was just a big bowl of broth. It contained 3 shrimp and no chicken, and about 5 leaves of spinach. A few slices of water chestnuts, and maybe one snow pea sliced up. So I basically got a hot bowl of broth for $6.95. Barely any rice. Total waste of money, and I was still hungry. I have ordered this soup at other Chinese restaurants, and it has come chock full of meat, rice and veggies. Not here. The worst part was the service. I had told them I was waiting for a friend, as they were seating me. I had wanted to order an appetizer, and after sitting for 15 minutes, had to go find a waiter to take my order. Then when my friend arrived, we sat another 15 minutes waiting to place our order. Again we had to flag down the waiter to take our order. Our food arrived fairly quickly and hot. Overall, I will not visit Kirin again for a long while. It is sad to pay $16 for lunch and leave hungry. read more

Their deep fried chicken dishes, which were always awesome, are now made with whatever pieces of chicken they have instead of prime breast pieces like in the past, which I guess is a cost saving measure. It was good but not wonderfully fabulous by any means. We ate here for the first time the other night. Ordered several different dishes-some classics. The food is about a B- or C average. Nothing stood out as being a to die for dish. The service was great in the beginning, friendly male waiter until he decided to disappear and not tell us he was either off or on break. At that point we were kinda left to fend for ourselves as far as tracking down help. That would be my biggest complaint, not too big of a deal but worth mentioning. Being the best though comes at different levels...being the most athletic camper at fat camp is a great achievement in its own right, but will not lead to the major leagues. This is Kirin. Good food overall but laughably the worst service in Santa Rosa should be their motto. After waiting 30 minutes for someone to take our order, a lady came by, apologized for not having a pen, she then disappeared to never be seen again. Spectacular. .. Again, the food is good. Call in and grab it to go works like a charm. If you truthfully want to subject yourself to being ignored, only having 2 minutes to order because once that waiter comes, he is never coming back... then enjoy an evening at Kirin. read more

I love this place, when I lived a block away I used to get food here every few days and order like $100+ in food. They still remember my phone number when I call in for take out. I think their chicken chow mein is really addicting and the couple of dishes that got me totally hooked were the pineapple walnut prawns which has the best white sauce ever! The fried texture on these prawns is amazing and having a bite with walnut, pineapple and a prawn smothered in the sauce is truly heavenly. The princess prawns are spicy and amazing and I love their sizzling rice soup. The hot and sour is also good and their lemon chicken is really freaking good. The staff is always awesome and they always remember a good tip! The Generals chicken and mongolian beef is perfect despite their focus on seafood and I have never gotten a dish I was disappointed in here! Best Chinese EVER! Mongolian beef is perfect, just the right amount of spicy. And its not really chewy, like some other mongolian beef from other restaurants. The sauce that it comes in is very flavorful and I usually pour it over the rice instead of using soy sauce. The walnut prawns are really good too, as is the orange chicken. I usually get it to go, but when I do dine in the service is always top notch. They have good lunch specials with one entree that comes with rice and chowmein. Ordering individual items for dinner can get expensive but they give good portions and it is well worth the price. read more

Fantastic hot and sour soup! We always order it without meat and shrimp. If you like it that way, make sure to specify 'no meat and shrimp' otherwise you'll end up with shrimp hot and sour soup. It's happened to us twice. Mu Shu pork is on other favorite of mine here, while my wife loves the lemon chicken. It's definitely one of the better Chinese restaurants in town, but a little pricy. The service is chilly to down right rude here, and that's really my biggest complaint. One of the older ladies is really nice, though. Ok the food in the past was probably some of the best Chinese in Sonoma County - however - the quality of the food seems to have slipped - the last time we got take out the food was downright bland. I have deleted the incident where the owner and I got into it because my comments seemed mean spirited and I think there is enough bitchiness on Yelp already. Sufficed to say the owner can be difficult to deal with and since he handles the front - your experience at this restaurant may vary. We will still go there but for the most part we have been going to Great China where the food has been consistently good. read more

Far and away the best Chinese food in Sonoma County. Whenever someone says they know or have found the best Chinese food, I give their suggestions a shot. Kirin is still #1. Everything is good, but my favorites there are the Crab Rangoon, Mongolian Beef, and Wonton soup. Can't go wrong with those delicious items. The food is always fresh. Their seafood is cooked perfectly. The wait staff is friendly an helpful (Alex likes to tell a dirty joke when I visit for my birthday). This is THE best Chinese Food place ever! I can honestly say, it will never get better than this. High quality food, ingredients, service every time I've been since I was a little girl. I've really only have dined here for dinner. Both sit-in and take-out. They have to die for homemade pot stickers for $8. They are so good, I hate having to share - the only reason I do is because I want to have room for the rest of my delicious food that will soon be coming out. Each dinner plate is about $10. But it's tons of food - great for sharing between 3-4 people. So my boy friend and I always have extra. One of our staples is the Shrimp-Fried rice. I could eat a plate of this by myself sometimes. The rice, veggis and shrimp are ALWAYS just perfectly cooked. It never has that fishy/shrimpy taste or smell to it. The rice is always most not overly fried, greasy or dried out like it can be at other places. I've yet to find a Chinese restaurant that makes shrimp-fried rice as boss as Kirin. We also always order Lemon Chicken and Mongolian Chicken (spicy). The Mongolian chicken is spicy, and is served with fresh and sauteed green onions and hot peppers on top. This alone is enough food. But when I come here with my parents, they like to go all out. And every dish we've ever tasted has always been just beyond all expectations. Pineapple, Walnuts and Prawns has always been one of my parents favs, as well as the broccoli chicken. My boyfriend Clay will occasionally talk me into getting orange chicken, or sweet and sour pork/chicken...not yet have I been disappointed. Somewhat recently moved back to Santa Rosa from SF, mecca of Chinese food, and have been looking for some good solid quick delivery that will deliver to Rincoln Valley. This is a little on the expensive side, but the portions are a good size, and you pay for what you get for. Steamed rice should be cheaper but it is what it is. Other than that everything was the best I have had so far. Only been here once but it will be my new go to. Food: Mongolian chicken was excellent. Good meat to onions ratio. Fresh green onions plus the crispy fried onions. Sauce was thin but super flavorful and a lot of it. Not dried or chewy chicken, was super tender from the sauce. Standard size but packed full of chicken. Sometimes with this dish at other restaurants it is basically a box of onions with a few chicken pieces, not here though. Spice level was medium. Personally, I Iike it more spicy, but it is probably a good spice level for most people, especially if you're sharing it family style. Anyways, it came with chilli sauce on the side, heated it up nicely. Great job. Vegetable Gyoza also excellent according to my sister. I didn't try it but the little vegetarian said it was great. Plus the dipping sauce was super flavorful, not just soy or chilli sauce. Although both were provided. Vegetable chow mein also great. Nice thick noodles, good portion size. Not greasy, noodles clearly freshly cooked, not stiff or dry. Sometimes chowmein seems precooked but this was fresh. Steamed rice was also fresh. Portion size could be better for $2 steamed rice but so it goes Also, the fortune cookies were fresh. Always a good sign. Service: Ordered off door dash. Delivery was super fast. This was on a very hot Sunday night around 7pm. We had some special instructions on the food, and they followed them exactly. So that was one of the five star aspects. Overall, probably would have given it a 4 or 4.5 stars, but given that I've tried three other Chinese restaurants in Santa Rosa in this price range, and none have been nearly this good, I am saying 5 stars. read more

Nice neighborhood spot in Bennett Valley, Santa Rosa. Interesting menu of Northern style Chinese. I went on a recommendation from a coworker as I do not usually eat Chinese food. Our server Thomas was very opinionated and taught us how to eat the pot stickers in a way we had never done. They were delicious and flavorful. We had an Asparagus with prawns and scallops special that was good. The Asparagus was fresh and crisp but the sauce was a tad salty. The Kirin beef was flavorful but I will try the spicier dishes next time. The wine list was short but had a Riesling and Gewürztraminer that pair well with the food. read more
