Fantastic tapas spot! Visited recently while in Napa and got to sit in the patio in the afternoon. Perfect! We did a good your of the menu and everything was excellent. We had boquerones, a gorgeous peach salad, patatas, fried manchego, lamb chops and a delightful coffee and desert. Fancy gin and great selection of wines rounds out their menu. I had been here before 10, and then maybe 2 years ago. Last night will be the last time. I tried to make a reservation and learned that they only take a limited number of reservations, for 4 or more people. There were four of us, but there were no more reservations available. OK, it happens but then I read that if you DO make a Rez, there is a $10 deposit per person. Tacky. So we decide to take a chance and walk in, and that was not a problem. Our waitress was nice and service was good. The issue, sadly, is the food. We started with gin and tonics, which the place specializes in. Multiple tonics and gins. The drinks were really weak. I remember going with my husband and the G&T went right to my head. This one might as well have been a sprite. Then came the food. The patatas bravas were basically French fries and the special sauce tasted like ketchup with a dollop of mayo in the middle. The cheese tray, for twenty bucks, consisted of three cheese chunks the size of an old school match box. The fried eggplant with honey was delish. Shrimp were just OK. Mussels with polenta were tasty. Then came the paella, which we shared. That was the most disappointing thing. 4 clams and a sprinkling of dried out, overcooked mystery meat. Pricewise, I'd say it's fair for inflationary times, except for the paella which was basically a rip. Next time I want tapas, I'm going to Tapas Bravas in Healdsburg. This was the highlight of our first night in Napa. We were lucky to be seated right away without a reservation. The interior is moody and cozy - perfect for a date night. On our way to the airport, we had to make one final stop at ZuZu after seeing its impressive gin selection. After spending time in Spain, we've become fairly tough critics when it comes to tapas and pintxos, so our expectations were high. Thankfully, ZuZu delivered a memorable experience. We originally came hoping to find a Basque cheesecake, but instead discovered their Basque cake. My husband absolutely loved it. It was rich, flavorful, and a wonderful surprise that more than satisfied the craving. The cooling sangria was exactly what we needed on a warm Napa afternoon. Refreshing, balanced, and not overly sweet, it paired beautifully with the relaxed atmosphere and felt like the perfect way to unwind before our flight home. This place is tiny and the tables are packed pretty tight. It's a pretty loud setting, great for certain occasions. The service wasn't great. The server had no smile on her face and didn't bother to explain the menu and their specialities to us. When I had a question on a certain item, I felt she was irritated to answer and made me feel dumb on why I wouldn't know that already. She also missed ordering an item that I had placed. And because my party and I didn't feel welcome, we ended up leaving early without ordering further. There were other examples of poor service but I will bare the community the details. The worst was they charged 20% gratuity automatically for large parties, but they certainly didn't deliver. I am typically fine with auto gratuity but you have to provide service too. Food wise- the ceviche was bland. The skirt steak was flavorful and well executed. It's too bad that their service ruined it all. There are plenty other restaurants nearby that would be happy to earn my business. read more

Walking in downtown Napa and we passed by Zuzu. Ot was inviting and the idea of tapas made us all excited. We were seated at the counter height table so it was a bit uncomfortable with a child but its not too big of a deal. Our orders were croquettes, mussels for small plates and we ordered the zuzu paella and paella negra. We had daiquiri and singapore "something" for our drinks. Everything was tasty and good! The paellas were both delicious and the mussels has a great balance of citrus and savory! We were seated outdoors and the vibe was great! We escaped our little ones to celebrate our anniversary at Zuzu on a Thursday evening. It was a perfect and much needed date night! Located in the very pleasant and walkable downtown Napa area, we parked in a nearby structure at no charge around 6pm. The restaurant itself has a casual, welcoming ambiance with tables indoors/patio and upstairs. We started off with some strong drinks - I got the Sazerac pomegranate style and Wifey ordered the Singapore Sling. Foodwise, we ordered the Ceviche del Dia, Pan Fried Manchego Cheese, Chicken Croquetas, Gulf Shrimp w/ Garlic, and the Flat-Iron Steak. The shrimp was ridiculously flavorable, and the tastes still lingered on us all the way home. Our medium-rare flat iron steak was perfectly done - tender in the middle and seared nicely on the edges with whatever amazing stuff they put on top of it. We had a great time sipping our drinks, chatting, and enjoying our tapas plates one by one. Our server, Tony, was kind, helpful, and didn't rush us through our orders. Sad to say that ZuZu didn't really hit the mark. I will say that the atmosphere and vibes were immaculate. The restaurant is located in downtown Napa and it's beautiful. There's a live guitarist across the street playing music, with the street lights and people wandering out (this part was great). Now to the not so great parts: -The ceviche came out first, it was very bland. It had very little seafood and was mostly Jicama (the sweet white root vegetable). The chips were okay. -the paella's rice didn't have those crispy edges. It was all extremely mushy. The amount of seafood was very generous but it was also bland. Most of the flavor came from the lemon and squid ink. -the steak pieces were very flavorful. This was the best part of the meal. However, for $50 I would find this more enjoyable if i had a couple more bites? But, I know as a tapas restaurant the plates would be small (although wasn't expecting it to be this small). Overall, the service was alright. Our server was extremely busy so I can tell they were not as attentive as they wished to be. My bf and I made a reservation for the same day weekend easily. We arrived slightly early around 5pm and were seated without a wait as there was no one there. We got to sit upstairs. We had a recommendation to come and enjoy tapas. We didn't expect the a small bar restaurant to present genius dishes with a great selection of drinks. They have great flavor and we could not pick a favorite. We started with the Iberico ham and Catalan salad. Great combo. Then we had the ceviche and finished with the mussels. Our group of 3 dropped by Zuzu around 7pm on a Saturday, and were placed on the waitlist and told to return when we received a text. We walked around downtown and enjoyed looking at the Lighted Festival installations for around 30 minutes until we got a text to check back in. There are actually two entrances to two rooms that are adjacent to eachother, and we were seated alongside the wall across from the bar. The space is dimly lit and cozy - definitely a little tightly packed but still with enough space to have a conversation without needing to shout. We got an assortment of tapas and the Zuzu paella to share - everything was excellent, but we especially enjoyed the ceviche of the day, the bacalao, and the paella. The 4 tapas and the paella were quite filling for the 3 of us, despite our inital concerns that the paella looked on the smaller side. The paella had a very generous amount of seafood, and was very flavorful - the texture of the rice was excellent as well. I'll definitely be back for tapas and paella at Zuzu! This was a vey mixed experience. I would rate it 3.5 stars. My husband enjoyed his meal, while I did not. The stand out dish was the mushroom freido, it was perfectly seasoned and came out hot. My husband enjoyed the lamb chops (special of the day). The queso tapas was just alright, I think it would have tasted better had it been a little warmer. We ordered the following: Lamb chop: over-cooked but tasted pretty good. It came with Mediterranean bbq sauce (3.5/5) Patatas fritas (4.5/5): very nicely fried and the potatoes were seasoned well but the sauce left some to be desired. It kind of tasted like chipotle in adobo from the can. Flank steak (4.75/5; delicious . Perfectly cooked. Great chimichurri but no jalapeño. Biggest complaint is that the description of this dish wasn't accurate. Lamb tartare (5/5; great seasoning texture and bread. One of my favorite dishes of the meal. Dungeoness crab filo dough special (Tunisian brik pastry- 4.5; amazing egg w runny yolk, lots of crab, green onion good flavor balanced and unique. Queso frito (5/5; great taste and seasoning. Perfectly fried and salad was awesome Drinks: Agave blossom (4/5; pretty strong but nothing phenomenal) and espresso martini (4/5: decent but I've had better.). This place was unfortunately a letdown. I was excited to try ZuZu after seeing positive reviews online, but nothing really matched my expectations onsite. First, we had a wait of about 20 minutes to be seated for dinner, which was reasonable. However, our waiter left us hanging for over 15 minutes before taking our order. It was so hard to flag someone down, and the food also took almost 40 minutes to come out. At this point, we were just so hungry that anything tasted good. Nice location and store front, facing the Napa River and walkway. It's just this big open door with a breezeway down this hallway of small tables on your left and a long bar to the right. There might be more tables in the back but we never made it that far. We absolutely love bar seating. After a long day of wine tasting, tours and rubbing elbows with other elbows, we simply needed a good cocktail. They make those here. The whole mixology thing is a bit pompous in theory but rightly appreciated in practice. Informative, professional and friendly he was. We had a very good meal here! The food and the preparation of the paella and tapas were good and we liked every dish that we ordered. The service was efficient and food was served quickly. The ambience was classic including the dank and dark dining area, something I would expect at a very old Tapas and Paella place. Things that could improve: 1. Wait staff seemed very reserved when communicating with us....not so with the other customers...maybe we were not dressed up for the occasion. Well we too paid good money and ordered quite a bit for a party of 2 , so thought we deserved a little more friendliness. 2. Lighting could be a tad brighter to enjoy the full experience. 3. Squid ink Paella tends to be very wet and thus requires to cooked longer for the rice to get the classically burnt and stuck to the pan. That is whole essence of a paella. Had a second experience here and the food was not very impressive this time. I still love the vast gin menu and the gin tonics are huge. But I'm just not sure this is worth it at ~$18-20 per small plate Ceviche - it was halibut the night I went. Very few pieces of fish, mostly other veggies/filler. This dish has good flavor, but the fish itself had a fishy funk and didn't taste like it was of great quality. Tortilla espanola - plain and dry. A little overdone in my opinion Steak - they asked what temp we wanted and we asked for medium. What came out was closer to rare Chicken croquetas - still great. Crisp exterior and soft interior, nice and savory. Shrimp/gambas - this was my favorite. Shrimp are cooked well and the sauce is delicious. But at $5 per shrimp... maybe not worth it Apple empanada - the edge of the empanada had an overpowering burnt sugar flavor that was super bitter. The fruit filling was pretty meager, and although the menu said apple, the receipt said peach so not sure in the end what it was. Tres leches - this was very tasty with crisp caramelized banana. We were in Napa for the weekend for our anniversary and saw this place on Yelp. We saw that there were no reservations available so we decided to just walk in. We were able to get seated right away at the bar. We probably would've had a better experience at a table but it was still a good time. The bartender was pretty swift with the service. We came back to one of our very favorite tapas restaurant. Once again, it hit all aspects of the dining experience. Server was knowledgeable, engaging, and accommodating. We start off with flat iron steak and the croquette of the day. The steak we get every time. It just melts in your mouth, so good! The croquette was chicken and i think she said poblano peppers. It was rich in flavor, tiny bit of spice and breading was crunchy and cooked to perfection! After we finish our tapas the hostess asks if we are done, I say yes and ask for bread (I thought it was complimentary but maybe we were charged twice idk). I don't think she responded just gave me a look and took all our dishes. she brought out some cold stale bread and was like the waitress said you have more dishes coming and you ordered paella. I said that is correct. She was like you said you were done, I wouldn't have taken your silverware if you had more stuff coming, she was really catty in her response and it was all just unnecessary. I apologized and explained I thought she was referring to the tapas. A lot of places bring fresh silverware with entrees so I didn't think anything of her taking everything. I was just really put off by her whole demeanor every interaction. I am not sure if maybe she was an owner? She parked in the street with hazards on which gave that vibe. Either way i was pretty surprised as we have not encountered her/that attitude anytime we have been. After the interaction we received our paella (we always order the black paella) and it was great as usual! There were a couple of pretty small pieces of shell that i bit into that hurt but thats ok. We finished off the meal with chocolate custard that was also great! We still enjoyed our meal and will be back of course. One of my favorite places in Napa! I've come here multiple times, and because the menu rotates a bit to reflect the season, so its hard to recommend specific items. BUT, if you see squash blossoms on the menu, you MUST PARTAKE. So good! I loved the creamy filling with the crisp, floral casing. The paellla is the signature dish here and absolutely worth sharing as well. Seafood is delicate and flavorful without being too pungent. There was honestly not a bad bite in the entire meal, and we definitely ordered a lot. In Napa, you can throw a rock and hit excellent wines in any direction, and Zuzu is no exception. Enjoy a glass of wine with your selection, even if it's not Napa-local (but they have plenty!) and be sure to sit outside and people-watch. Service is quick and attentive, and overall friendly. After trying many restaurants in Napa, Zuzu turned out to be one of the most unexpectedly impressive spots of the trip. It specializes in Spanish tapas. I originally thought it would be a casual small-plate place, but every dish that came out showed clear attention to plating and detail. The presentation was much more refined than expected, yet the prices were still very reasonable by Napa standards. Overall, it was a very pleasant surprise. Everything we ordered was excellent--almost no misses, and in fact most dishes arrived looking so good that they immediately set a nice tone. The octopus was incredibly tender with a good bite, lightly charred on the surface, and paired well with the sides and sauce. The patatas bravas looked simple but were fried very evenly, crispy outside and soft inside, and the plating was neat rather than sloppy. The paella is also a must-order: rich aroma, not overly wet, with just the right amount of crisped rice at the bottom. The seafood was fresh, and the colors and presentation were beautiful. As for price, it's very reasonable for Napa. It's not like some winery restaurants where a few dishes can quickly run up a huge tab, and you don't feel like the portions are tiny. Sharing several dishes between two people is just right, and the balance between quality and cost feels spot-on. Zuzu's biggest strength is that every dish tastes great and has its own highlight, without trying too hard. The whole meal flows naturally. If you're craving refined, beautifully plated, and consistently delicious Spanish food without paying high-end winery prices, this is a great choice. After a lovely day wine tasting in Napa we were craving a Spanish Tapa's type restaurant that had Paella and we found ZuZu downtown nestled among other restaurants across from the river. They offer outdoor and indoor seating with well thought out cozy Spanish style decor that was impeccably clean. The service was extremely prompt and attentive. The food was absolutely on point! From the white anchovy salad to their house ZuZu Paella, the freshness and flavor really stood out. The overall experience was memorable.
