Overall, we like this place. The food is usually quite good, and the menu has a pretty good variety. We choose times to go when there's little to no wait, and we get served in a timely manner. When it's busier, the food can take a while, but not always. We like the interior decor too. It's a nice place. The little glitches we've experienced after about 10 total visits brings us to just give it three stars. The waitstaff can be pleasant or matter-of-fact, and some are just going through the motions. Some are nice. There can be very few smiles at times, but no one is gruff. There's one woman who is incredibly sweet and very thoughtful. It's quite a mixture of staff experiences. Another is kind of fun/sassy. One visit (about 6 weeks ago) two of us arrived 15 minutes before closing, and were clearly told they'd be closing soon and we had to order quickly. I would hope that any restaurant would allow people to be seated up until closing time, and then graciously accept a normal pace of ordering and dining (as long as we didn't take forever). We felt warned, not welcomed. So, we ordered very quickly, and then the server relaxed and was more pleasant. Does the kitchen staff scold her, or ? Why can't their schedule allow for servers not to be stressed and customers not to be rushed? I've worked in restaurants, and when the restaurant closes, the kitchen should remain open for some time, allowing for meals to be ordered, and even allowing for later add-ons or corrections. This visit, there was a mistake in my order, which I remedied by picking off the item that I'd asked to be excluded. I know these things happen, and they apologized, but it felt like the kitchen rushed through our order. The server said something like, "It's just what they're used to doing." The kitchen should be just as sharp with their last order of the day as they are with the first. We are also not a fan of any restaurant that puts up chairs on the tables for closing procedures/cleaning while anyone is still dining. They didn't do the tables right next to us though, but did do it for about half the restaurant. Twice I've ordered avocado toast, so I know it's not a fluke that it comes on regular, soft (barely toasted) store bought sandwich bread. The toppings were wonderful - a creative combination. Now, if only the "toast" was a nice rustic bread that's well-toasted. It would be a to-die-for menu item, but the thin soft sandwich bread doesn't work. I'm learning that what we order can have a big impact on our experience. Egg dishes tend to be quite good. The average sandwich is very good too. The staff can be quite friendly, but all of them need to be that way. I do recommend the place. They just need to rethink a few small things, imho. read more

Came here with a large group of my buddies for a nice brunch after hiking Mt. Tam, and I don't think any of us expected to be as blown away with the food here that we were (and I came with some rather picky palates). I ordered the chicken hash off of the Chef's Specials portion of the menu. The hash was a perfectly blended mix of chicken, seasoned potato, and cheese, with the green scallion topping adding a nice touch of flavor and texture - the poached eggs on top just made it. The large piece of toast served on the side was a perfect base for the absolutely phenomenal strawberry marmalade sitting on every table. I didn't order the Millionaire's Bacon myself, but my friends who did loved theirs (infused with maple and spices). $17 for a meal this great was more than worth it - and the speed that the dishes came out was an extra bonus. My partner and I had a horrible experience at this establishment. He, allergic to cheese, ordered an omelette without cheese. After debating with rude and uncaring JUNE, our server, if omitting is the same as substitution ( no substitutions on weekends, though another server substituted million dollar bacon for regular bacon for the table behind us) she agreed to remove cheese from the order. After a few bites of the omelette my partner discovered cheddar cheese strands beneath the ham and tomato. Instead of being sorry or apologizing, June began to explain how there are no substitutes on the weekends. Long story short, this place is a cesspool of negligence, the food looks better then tastes, and June does not care for her tables. Bottom line is, June took the order and said it was no problem to omit cheese due to the cheese allergy, then brought the breakfast over with cheese inside, and either did not tell or did know about the cheese. When she was told about it, she became defensive blaming the kitchen and then blaming us for asking for no cheese. She escalated at our table and was nearly hysterical. No one was sorry about the mistake, they only cared about not being blamed. read more

Strong 4+ without question. We came for breakfast today around 10:00 am and was Seattle immediately which was nice because they were pretty packed and there was 5 of us. The place was clean and the staff was very pleasant. We ordered the Fat sunny (deep fried French toast - two pieces 10$) it was delicious and the is worth ordering again. Another item was the lemon ricotta pancakes (two large -11$) these had wonderful lemon flavoring but they were far too dense for me- no fluff at all. I am assuming it's because of the ricotta, but I would not order these again. Next came the morning omurice. (Large 18$) This dish has rice, spinach ,scallions, carrots, onions and shredded rib eye steak with an egg on top. It also came with a green salad. It was huge and can easily be split between two people. It was delicious and this should be ordered again. The morning tacos were large in portion as well and had very little egg. This had apple sausage, cheddar cheese, cilantro and many other ingredients with toast and hash browns ( undercooked) large in portion but lacked flavor (18$) not sure if I would order again and they also need to add more eggs to this dish. Last but not last was the millionaire Benedict. Beautiful in representation but lacked in the flavor area. The poached eggs were perfection and the asparagus was perfect- but the bacon was fatty tasting and the hollandaise lacked flavor. Bummer on this one. I'm addicted to hash. But not the hash you're thinking of. I'm talking about the Sunnyside Hash at Mill Valley's Kitchen Sunnyside. This cafe-formerly-known-as Toast is serving up delicious greasy-spoon fare in a charming, non-greasy environment. For breakfast this morning, I ordered the aforementioned Sunnyside Hash. I figured if the restaurant's name is attached to the dish, it must be pretty damn good. And you know what? It really was! The dish boasts a generous portion of chewy/crispy hash browns topped with bacon, red onion, bell pepper, jalapeno, mushroom, and white cheddar. It comes with two eggs (any style of your choosing), a green salad, and your choice of toast (I went with the English muffin). As you can tell, there's a lot going on on this plate. I couldn't believe how much food they gave me. I could barely eat half of it. I almost felt guilty leaving so much food untouched on my plate. And for $13, this dish is quite a steal! Be sure to order their Arnold Palmer. It's made with Raspberry Lemonade, and I could drink this refreshing beverage morning, noon, and night. Service was quick and friendly. Be warned, the place is somewhat small... so you might be sitting very close to the neighboring table. All in all, I truly enjoyed my first Kitchen Sunnyside experience. I'm so glad they "updated" this place. It was always such a shame seeing all the happy families going in and out all the time. They've made the following improvements: - barstools with no backs making it hard for kids to sit at the counter - higher prices - virtually no kids menu at all - slower service. the cooks seemed like kids. The experienced wait staff seemed annoyed. - The kids chocolate milk is now 20 ounces. Thanks for that. - The saturday opening time was 8am- seems a bit late for a diner - The kids pancake has gone from the size of a hubcap to the size of a coaster. - The kids pancake is lemon which isn't mentioned on the menu. In the history of mankind has a single kid ever ordered a lemon pancake? It was actually delicious but my son took one bite and said it was "spicy" I went to Toast maybe 100 times with my family over the past 7-8 years. After one visit to this new place I'll never go back. I'm happy for the Mill Valley Coffee Shop who should greatly benefit from the ineptitude here. read more

Menu has lots of variety, but seems to try to be too hard to be upscale. No regular pancakes, only espresso or lemon ricotta. Asked for regular pancakes and were told the batter is premade so no dice. Same for the French toast - you're stuck with citrus battered or mascarpone stuffed. Why no standard options? Even the side order of 1 pancake is lemon ricotta. No standard eggs benedict either. Also no garden omelette from the previous restaurants menu which is a bummer because it was the best. As a 35 year fan of Fred's in Sausalito, I'm here to tell you that Kitchen Sunnyside is a wonderful sister restaurant. They do the signature fluffy eggs the same way. Nowhere else that I've ever been comes close to this degree of egg fluffiness. My favorite thing here that I order each time is the Haas omelette. It is a big fluffy omelette with bacon, jack cheese and avocado, all in just the right proportions. Not too much cheese and perfect plentiful avocado. For a small up charge I get gluten free toast and fresh delicious mixed berries instead of potatoes. Their coffee is good too. They made nice interior design calls which we appreciate a lot. We have gone every weekend for the past month or so. If you want your omelette fluffy, ask then to cook it lightly!!! Yay for this little gem of a restaurant. read more

Goodness! I was soooo happy we found this place while staying in Sausalito last week! We loved it so much that we went twice! They have these super yummy Yukon gold fried potatoes, and they were seasoned just perfectly, with just the right amount of crispiness. I got the Lemon Citron french toast, and it was extremely light and fluffy. My fiance and son also tried the Millionaire's bacon, and a friend of ours tried it the next day and said it was tied for the best bacon he'd ever had. My son also had the crispy french toast, and he said it was great too. I don't think there was a single complaint, and the service was awesome. We came with our six month old, and one of the waitresses got her some mashed potatoes without us requesting, which she loved. I would definitely recommend if you're in the area! read more

I have been 3 times since they have opened and the 5 stars is relative to the Marin area. In SF, I'd probably go with 4. The negative reviews seem to be folks pining for the familiarity of Toast but Toast epitomized breakfast in Marin -- largely mediocre. There are some pleasant exceptions (Shoreline Cafe or The Hummingbird). Kitchen Sunnyside is clean. The staff are friendly and accommodating. The food is consistently very good. It remains a great place for kids as well. I'd say the only drawback is there are too many items on the menu (not as exhaustive as MV's other well-loved but mediocre Dipsea Cafe but still too many). Oddly enough, what may be their best or ultimately signature dish is buried on the back page -- The Stone Pot. Try it with scrambled eggs. Fantastic. For now, this is the best breakfast in Marin. read more

They dun hv fancy big item menu but they do make the simple things right. Start with ice tea and I shared a chicken salad and a Philly cheesesteak Panini with my friend. The salad was fresh and came with generous potion of chicken...a bit too generous in my opinion...lol. Since the Philly is so good, I've been ordering the Philly the last few times I was here. The hash was not a hash. It was a pore excuse for an unseasoned omelet topped with bland mushrooms and red bell peppers...could remember any other flavors. For a great hash, go to Theresa and Johnny's in San Rafael.The 2 eggs were suppose to be scrambled but they just prepped it like it was an omelet and the sausages were sad. We got 2 and they were tiny and flavorless. Our server's English wasn't great and he clearly was new to the biz. He came back twice to clarify our order. Make sure you go to the bathroom before you get there, because the doors are locked until 730 a.m. there is free street parking until nine a.m., after which parking is metered. The moment I walked on the front sidewalk of Sunnyside, I could smell fried bacon, the sweet smells of pancakes, waffles, and french toast, and I could hear the chatter among satisfied customers. I yearned to be one of those people eating that flavorful sweet and spicy food. Instead of that, I get the sour taste of my own saliva. I'll have to wait to get my own food. The location is amazing, as it is right next to the road so it is accessible, but has a lovely view of the green rolling mountains surrounding Mill Valley. On the inside is a cozy pleasing aesthetic, and it continues throughout the dining area. You can be seated inside or outside. The only negative aspect of sitting outside is that you are being seated on a sidewalk, but it doesn't even make it worse. I would prefer to sit outside on a sunny, beautiful day. One major part is the food. I always get the Hot Stone Pot, and it is the perfect mix of sweet and spicy, with cut up vegetables and a choice of meat or tofu. Whenever I take a bit of the egg, the gooey yolk explodes inside my mouth, and the sweet sauce makes my tastebuds flutter into a happy dance. Although I always get the Hot Stone Pot without mushrooms and asparagus, the menu is big and full of meal names that make your mouth start to water just thinking about them. The wait for the food is surprisingly short, and once you have your food, you're good to go, because you know that no matter what you ordered will make your mouth smile wide the rest of the meal. The noise in Sunnyside is pleasant, not too much that you have to shout to talk to people, but enough so that it's not eerily quiet. The service is also amazing. I went on Saturday, and I got the Hot Stone Pot without mushrooms and asparagus. Then, today, I went again, and the same waiter came and said to me "would you like the Hot Stone Pot without mushrooms and asparagus?" I was stunned. Not only could the waiters and waitresses take orders without writing them down, but this waiter had remembered mine three days later! The staff are always so polite, and always have giant, genuine smiles stretched across their faces. The only negative aspect of the entire dining experience at Sunnyside is that the price of the food is definitely not cheap, in fact, you could probably say the opposite of that. Despite this, the mouth watering food, pleasant aesthetics, friendly staff, and beautiful location, are definitely worth the price. read more

We have been staying in Sausilito on a wonderful houseboat. Heading out to Muir Woods and Stinson Beach, we Yelped looking for a good breakfast that was on the way out of town which meant in Mill Valley. Kitchen Sunnyside was the best breakfast/brunch any of the four of us have had in memory. The servings are so generous, none of us ate anything all day again until dinner time. Standouts included the Bay Hash -- which has so much seafood in it it's almost comical. Do note that if you don't specify it is made with a healthy dose of jalapeños. Second superlative were the lemon ricotta pancakes, which I got with eggs and bacon. Note here that scrambled eggs are the super light fluffy kind -- almost like they are whipped --and what's advertised as two eggs must really be more like four. Regular bacon was great; one of us had the Millionaires bacon which we all found a little over the top. Great coffee- nice service if not the fastest, but it is not the kind of meal one can chow down in a hurry. This is a place with food to savor. We are considering another breakfast at Kitchen Sunrise before we leave-- it's that good. read more
