Wow... The mighty have fallen.... Husband and I haven't been here in AGES, and something has happened since we were there last. We came in and ordered our regular orders-- He got the chicken and waffles, I got the Chilaquiles. Chicken and waffles were now a overcooked breaded cutlet and dense chewy waffles. No longer were there luscious pieces of actual chicken and light and fluffy waffles. My chilaquiles were more tortilla than anything else. The sparse cheese was government-grade and the eggs were almost nonexistent. Both of us had bacon... instead of the thick-cut awesome bacon they had before, it was diner-grade bacon, and not in the good way. Greasy, small, and limp. It seems like they decided to cut corners somewhere, and it definitely showed. We won't be back. :( read more

I appreciate a place that does simple things well. Kitsch'n's menu may not pack a bunch of culinary surprises, but everything we tried was done well. Example A: My Chicken and Waffles. Um, first, let me say that this Southern favorite is pure genius. Thank you, American South! Kitsch'n did it well - the waffles being particularly noteworthy. I think I'll order Belgian Waffles alone next time - I could definitely eat a whole plate of these tasty, fluffy delights. Example B: Boyfriend's Huevos Locos. These were, as promised, "spicy crazy eggs!". The egg and chorizo scramble is served with tortillas, so you can make them into baby breakfast burritos - Yum! While we were eating, several children entered with their parents. Now, I'm not telling you that to scare you away - these were some of the cutest and best-behaved kids ever. My point is that Kitsch'n can easily adapt menu items to accommodate kiddie taste buds. There is even a kid's menu. Next up: Boyfriend and I shall revisit Kitsch'n for dinner. ::UPDATE:: I've talked to quite a few friends who have said that their service was crappy. I thought it worth mentioning because I had good service. I guess this place is REALLY inconsistent. This place is a fabulous place for brunch! I went here just last Saturday. Two of my friends and I showed up at about 12:30 and were seated within 10 minutes in their quaint and laid back backyard patio called "The Beer Garden." This place has a 70's psychodelic theme. Don't worry it's more subdued than you may think. This is an ODD request, but ladies, check out the bathroom when you're there, it's definitely unique! Among us, we ordered the Green Eggs & Ham, which were fabulous I loved my Southwest Smokey Chicken Omelette. The Hash Browns are really good. BONUS: They serve intelligentsia Coffee! I think Kitsch'n is great! It took me a long time to pay a visit, but I sure am glad I did! The chicken and waffles is quite good, but be aware of an extra $3 charge to request all white meat. Definitely try the Mexican hot chocolate...to die for! The bread basket that comes before the meal is an excellent warm pretzel bread. Mmmmm! It's casual. It's kitschy (as the name suggests). I've heard a lot of good things about Kitsch'n. It's gotten a lot of great reviews in magazines, papers, etc. But to me, it's average. Everything about it is good, but not very good. And what it doesn't do well, is not terrible, it's just not good. Cobb salad. Plain, kind of boring. It had all the right things in it, it just didn't do anything for me. Which is sad, because I have a sick love for cobb salad. The specials are hit or miss. Some of them have been pretty good, but not great, and some of them have been bad, but not inedible. The decor is kind of fun, and any time Billy Dee Williams is on the wall hocking Colt 45, I can't help but smile. I like the waitstaff. Friendly, but not pushy. Attractive, but not intimidatingly so. Kitsch'n on Roscoe is where I take friends when they stay the night with me in the city. It's friendly, it's fun, and the omelettes are damn good. The wait can be long and it's pretty uncomfortable to wait inside because you stand against this wall and there's a table of people eating about two feet from your crotch. That being said, I went there with a date for dinner and there was no wait and the food they served was very well cooked. I recommend sitting in the back porch area if the weather permits. It's cozy. Plus the wait staff is always on top of getting you refills which earns you an extra star in my book. read more

Oh Kitsch'n.... How I wanted to like you if for no other reason than a sense of nostalgia. I remember, years ago, when Kitsch'n was actually kitschy and pretty awesome. And then it became another sell-out, trendy, overcrowded yuppy spot with mediocre food, crappy service, and high prices. My friend and I went there for brunch on Memorial Day and had a truly subpar experience. After standing patiently in the doorway, waiting to be seated for several minutes, a snarling beast of a woman bellowed across the room to us... "Um, hi guys?" and then snottily barked, "Two?" We both smiled and said yes. Then she ROLLED HER EYES, sighed loudly and said, "Well are you going to come over here or what?" What a rude B. So after we were seated amongst a sea of screaming children, our inept server showed up after about 15 minutes and took our drink order only, dropped off our sodas and disappeared for another 15 minutes before taking our food order. Our food (a breakfast burrito and a tuna melt) finally arrived about 30 minutes later and was sooooo not worth the ungodly wait and terrible service. My burrito was nearly inedible- a lukewarm, soggy green mess. And my friend said his sandwich tasted like chopped onions on slightly burnt bread. To top it off, we practically had to rugby tackle our server to get refills on our sodas. I'm giving an extra star for the sweet lava lamp next to our table. It was a total throw back to eighth grade. But overall, our experience was terrible. I really don't like this place. I've been here a few times, hoping that each time I come, my experience will be an improvement from the last, but I am always left disappointed. It just happens to be an unfortunate coincidence that one of my really good friends loves this place. In fact, it might be her favorite brunch spot in the city. So, I'll find myself here on occasion when she suggests it. But today, this was it. No more Kitsch'n for me, no way. The food is just OK. I ordered the two eggs with smoked applewood bacon, Texas toast, and their "Danish hash browns. What are Danish hash browns, you ask? Home fries w/ bell peppers basically. I actually asked to sub the hash browns with the mashed potatoes but, of course, they were out. They were also out of the crab cakes that day. Granted, this was right around the great Chicago storm of 2011. In any case, the eggs tasted oddly buttery, I've never liked their hash browns, and typically I would be down with the Texas toast. I mean, it's just bread for the love of god, but when I went to butter it, the butter (in little packets) looked old and nasty. So no way was I putting that on my toast. No thanks. The only positive thing here, in my opinion, is their fresh squeezed orange juice and the service is also super fast and peppy. The prices are also very reasonable. They have mimosas and Chipotle bloody marys for pretty cheap, anywhere from $3-$5. I don't like the decor necessarily. The retro thing is different but I also just feel like the restaurant is dirty. Not a comforting feeling when you're ordering food. Not to mention, my brunch today was compounded by a screaming toddler. GET. ME. OUT. OF. HERE. This place is very different than most other restaurants in Chicago. The menu is cool and interesting (who put jalapenas in my tunafish sandwich?) and the decor is a hoot, not a cozy place but funky and fun. They can't decide if they want a retro 70's or retro 80's vibe, but it doesn't matter. Bad 1970's TV shows hum in the background. Kids menu comes in an old lunch box with a goofy discontinued 80's toy. Great:) The salads are very sizeable and yummy too. Discovered Kitch'n about 6-7 years ago when I lived in Roscoe Village. It's a really awesome place, filled with charm. The first thing you'll notice walking through the beaded curtain draped across the front door are the board games adorning the tables and shelves. This is the only place I can think of where you can order a mimosa while playing Yahtzee. Their food is great with their signature being Green Eggs & Ham, a literal translation of the childhood classic. My favorite, however, has to be their Chilaquiles. Delicious eggs, tortilla chips, cheese and spices are fried up and served with applewood smoked bacon, tangy salsa and thick, buttery Greek toast. Easily the best dish for that morning after. They get real busy for the weekend brunch crowd but well worth it. Go retro, Kitch'n is a real blast from the past. read more

For having 1 1/2 patios and inside area i'd hope you'd prepare your kitchen for that type of capacity - but it wasn't even full. None the less, we were seated at our table and at regular time were greeted by ????? server. There are no introductions anymore to friendly service at restaurants only "Do you two know what you'd like to order?" So I guess i'll order my drink because that's the only thing i've decided on this far. Drinks get dropped off in reasonable time. No complaints other than the sever dipsets to forget us for another 15 minutes. FINALLY we get a chance to order and she leaves with it only to return in a couple and tell us the kitchen is EXTREMELY backed up. Well have to wait a long time and that she's only telling us so we can cancel. UHHH OKAY? I guess we'll cancel. takes the canceled order away and comes back AGAIN to tell us we can actually put our food order in if we still want to. ?!?!?!?! Last time I checked you don't hire kitchen staff that can't handle a large seating sunday brunch and an incompetent servers staff who deter customers by recommending canceling their orders. Oy vey. Hmm... let me try to start with something positive. I like the decor - I think the 70's funky kitchen theme is great, it's fun to look around the restaurant as you're waiting. And waiting. And waiting. We got to play the waiting game for a looong time here today! It started with a 30min estimated wait time for a table which stretched to 45min. No problem, it happens. We then ordered our food and chatted. I noticed a table of three was seated next to us about 10 minutes later and ordered (well after the four of us). Then they got their food. We waited. Then they ate their food. We waited. Then they got their bill. And we... still hadn't even gotten our food. Our waiter did apologize and said something about a "shift change" in the kitchen. When our food finally arrived I couldn't figure out how an egg salad sandwich, a burrito, a bowl of chili, and a egg / bacon entree took close to an HOUR to prepare. And this was my second chance for this place! I'd been here for dinner and while the service time was better, the food wasn't great. My two friends ordered steak/burger dishes medium and medium rare... both came out well done. I ordered the mushroom pot pie after asking the waitress if it was mostly mushrooms or if there were other veggies in there too. She indicated there were peas, carrots, potatoes "all the usual pot pie veggies!" in the pot pie. Ummm... it was solid mushrooms, mushrooms, mushrooms, not a pea to be found as hard as I searched. BOTTOM LINE: I love the decor but it's not enough to keep me coming back. While the dinner food wasn't great, the breakfast food was fine, but unless I feel like making a full day out of my brunch again, I'll probably hit a different spot. read more

Man, there's some Kitsch'n hate going on here! Look, it's not going to blow you away, but it's reasonably priced, tasty food. I recommend the Coconut French Toast. Oh my goodness. It's french toast that has a coconut crust and comes with a raspberry jam to put on top of it. It also comes with a side of pineapple and strawberries. I almost always get this. I have tried other things (omlettes, etc), but I always come back to my french toast. Viva la Coconut French Toast! It's a good place to take your parents, if you're in the area. I've never had to wait more than a few minutes for a table, the decor is very distinct (and fun! It's very campy) and it's not too foo-foo for your 'rents. Give it a whirl. read more

I would give it 3 and 1/2 stars if I could. My favorite dish is the huevos locos (eggs with spicy chorizo, habaneros, pepper jack cheese, and mango mojito salsa oh and of course a side of corn tortillas), but doesn't come close to my sassy eggs from over easy!!!!! Fair warning though - it is SPICY it made my nose run!!! What sold me was the mango-mojito salsa - it gives it a sweet yet kicky flavor. I love filling my little tortillas with chorizo, egg, cheese, and mango salsa. The service is good (i don't remember anything negative about it). The decor is really awesome though, especially in the second indoor room whose little gadgets and thingamigigies make me nostalgic. Oh yeah and the place is a lot bigger than you would think by the looks of their outside. their initial dining area when you walk in then you go through a hallway and past the kitchen to the second dining area and you walk a little further and you get the outdoor/indoor patio. I come here when I forget that Over Easy is closed on Mondays, or when Victory Banner down the street is closed (they were gone for like a month!!!!). But I do enjoy them huevos locos! read more

I LOVE this place. It's such a change up from my breakfast norms. I'm in love with anything eggs when I'm hungover- I usually just get your standard omelette wherever I go, but I noticed their menu to be much more interesting. I came here with my brother, he got green eggs and ham (the green is pesto in case you were wondering). I think that was pretty exciting for him to finally eat the acclaimed Dr. Seuss meal at the ripe age of 30, and he loved it. I struggled over ordering the eggs in the basket or the basil & pesto omelette, but our waitress was really helpful & told me to go with the omelette and she promised I would not be disappointed- you bet your ass I wasn't. This was the most interesting and delicious breakfast I had had in a long time. Kept me full forever too. This place is too cool- food, decor, service- I don't understand the haters? Wow, I can't believe I have lived in walking distance of this place for a year now and only have experienced the full deliciousness of it as of this week. I met a couple friends here for a late Sunday brunch and we instantly loved the cute atmosphere. The place looks pretty small from the front, but has a larger room in the back and a patio. I order the bbq chicken omelet and it was perfect! So often omelets are massive and greasy lumps, but this one was light and fluffy with a perfect ration of egg to other ingredients. Also, the roasted sweet potatoes on the side and coffee were tasty too. My friend from out-of-town got the chicken and waffles and already wants to go back when she visits again. read more

I've eaten at Kitsch'n about 20 times and I hardly ever stray from the Chilaquiles. That and a cup of coffee is a great way to start a weekend day. I don't even remember the food here, because both times going the service was absolutely miserable. The first time it was bad, but we chalked it up to a bad day and tried again. The second time was even worse. It wasn't even busy and our server was constantly missing. One of my friends brought my wife and I here on a early Sunday afternoon. Well, it was early when we first got here. First off the place is extremely busy, and the wait just to get a table was ardous. Once we finally got sat we waited well over an hour for food. The server was charming, despite the wait, and pretty much got us everything we asked for. The food was decent. I had the chicken and waffles... the chicken was dry, and the waffles were a bit too crispy, but they had a great flavor. Overall, underwhelming experience. No offense, service was great and the Bloody Mary was great (Chipotle) but the food was really just, "meh". I had the crab cake eggs benedict and I didn't expect super deep fried cakes and then another mound of deep fried hashbrown. To top that off, there was a pile of wilted frisee on the side. I seem to write a preponderance of 4-star reviews - places that are good but just don't knock my socks off. Kitsch'n is one of them. Have been here multiple times, and it's always crowded!! I was amazed we even got a table with the plethora of people waiting out front. As always, lots of screaming, loud children. Teaching manners would be appreciated. I've had the breakfast burrito, the tofu scramble (which was a tiny bit bland, oddly enough), chilaquiles, the granola and fruit, and most recently, the basil pesto & veggie omelette. Maybe because it's fresh in my memory, but wow was that omelette good! My mother has gotten the fried chicken and waffles, and while I'd never put those two together, she said they worked. The menu is pretty comprehensive. Service was good (and patient, since I couldn't make up my mind), and pop refills came, a little slowly, but I'm not complaining since they had a jug of water on the table. Never fails that I end up sitting near the door (front or back) and freezing my ass off (or boiling to death). The food is good though-- stick to your ribs stuff that makes you want to take a mini food coma afterwards. The chicken and waffles are good, but not the gutbuster you might expect. Read that however you want, but Mama like. The chilaquiles are spicy but not knock-down drag-out like some brunch joints in town-- a definite plus. Their morning cocktails are great as well. However, if the food is a 4, the service is a 2. Inattentive waitstaff is something that can drive me batty really quickly....this place has it in spades. Also, there's NOWHERE to stand if you have to wait, and you will have to wait. In the winter, with everyone in bulky coats, it becomes insanely claustrophobic. However, the fun decor and the home-cooked-feeling food makes up for it....just try to imagine that you're at your least-favorite aunt's house. At Kitsch'n you get a bland, albeit healthier, piece of schnitzel, an unremarkable waffle and a side of ancho-chili honey that peters out well before delivering on the flavor slap-in-the face it's name portends and that your taste buds are longing. I really wanted to like the place. The decor is fun and funky, great for kids, but if I order "chicken and waffles" I am looking to indulge so, in that regard, Kitsch'n was a let-down. read more

I ate at this place a month or two ago with 3 friends and definitely wasn't wowed. The food was "just ok." I had the tuna melt, but there was absolutely no flavor. Perhaps flavor isn't supposed to be a part of this type of sandwhich, but I was hoping to enjoy it at least a little bit. Basically they took 2 ice cream scoopers full of tuna, plopped it onto 2 pieces of toast, and melted what tasted like Kraft American cheese singles over the top. There was way too much tuna, absolutely no seasoning from what I could tell, and the cheese was totally bland. The other people with me said that their food was ok, but nothing spectacular. The only positive part were the fries which I wound up sharing with a friend because her food accidentally flew off of the table during an attempt to adjust her seat in the super-cramped space. (the server did not offer to replace the food) Speaking of the server -- some of the worst service I've experienced and the main reason why I'm giving the place 2 stars. He had to have been high on something because he barely spoke and he didn't seem to be able to make sense of what he was doing. (and his eyes were cashed) He never asked us if we wanted another drink and he brought the check without saying a word. We wound up having to go across the street in order to continue getting drinks. The outdoor area was too crowded -- not necessarily that there were too many people, but they tried to fit too many tables into a tiny space. I couldn't move my chair because it was right on the edge of a tree planter and would've fallen in if I had moved back just an inch. The size of the space was also a nuisance because the servers and busboys had to practically hump your back and neck to get by to serve the tables near the road. The inside area looked a bit dingy and could've definitely used a makeover. (with lots of soap and heavy scrubbing) They do have a beer garden in the rear, but we didn't make the trek back there to check it out. read more

This place is like eating at the Brady house. Which for me, was always a childhood dream! I ate at Kitsch'n during the summer months when the back patio was open. The patio was indeed in the very back of the joint, surrounded by a tall wooden fence. Definitley backyard fare!!! I have tried the green eggs and ham, which is scrambled eggs, ham and cheese with pesto. I was disappointed. It was really just a few basil leaves added to eggs, there was really nothing pesto about it. I do not recommend it. I also have tried the eggs in basket which is an egg cooked inside Texas toast. It was tasteless. My friends often order various sweet breakfests, such as pancakes and waffles. They rave about them. It took me a long time to get to this place because it's right next to one of my all-time favorite brunch spots - Orange on Roscoe. And in fact, the only reason I wound up here is because Orange was super-crowded one Sunday morning. I had the chicken and waffles, which were delicious. The waffle was the perfect combination of crunchy exterior and soft, fluffy interior. The chicken was crispy and not at all greasy, as well as perfectly tender. Atmosphere was very cheerful and friendly. Pretty good. A couple quibbles. Nothing that would prevent me from going back, mind you, but things to note. First off, the waitress taking care of me was a little slow. To be fair, the place was pretty busy, but it still seemed like she was having an off day (she was, however, very friendly). I rarely find a meal that impresses me, but last night Kitsch'n in Roscoe really hit on the "wow-factor". I'm a GrubHub addict, nearing my 1000th order this year. I liked this restaurant so much, I'm leaving a yelp review instead of on the Hub. First off, the coffee is great. I'm a French press/clover fiend, this intelligentsia coffee is brewed well. The Chicken Thigh Sandwich is dangerously delicious. The meat is fried flat and the bacon is crispy and crunchy. The waffle fires are closer to a potato chip, but damn do they compliment the sandwich. I ordered the tiramisu also, which I was thoroughly surprised by. Instead of the boring old regular tiramisu, which tastes like old people, Kitsch'n did something fresh and marvelous, with a strawberry base instead of cocoa. We decided to give this place a whirl on a Sunday for brunch. We were expecting a crowd and a wait as we would anyplace on a late Sunday morning. I was correct about the crowd but I was wrong about the wait. We were seated right away which was a pleasant surprise. It looks like they moved the tables fairly well throughout our meal. The decor here is very retro and eclectic and very visually stimulating. It was pretty darn cool if you ask me. Our server was great as she was very attentive and friendly. I ordered Two Deuces & a Jack for 6.99 which consisted of 2 eggs any style w/apple-wood smoked bacon, Texas toast & Danish Hash browns. You can tell that they used good quality ingredients. You could tell by the taste. My only compliant was that they only served me two VERY small pieces of bacon. I was longing for more when I finished the bite sized pieces. We shared an order of biscuits and gravy which were in my opinion one of the better ones I have discovered in the area. My lovely wife ordered the coconut crusted french toast. I sampled some of it and I must say that it was OUTSTANDING! We will be back for more sometime soon! It was worth the price. read more

The service, however, was absolutely terrible. Our server was so totally out of it, we actually played a little game called "what drug is our server on?" In fact, we would have certainly ordered 2-3 more rounds of drinks and thus left a sizable tip. But, I guess he decided for us that our time at Kitch'n was over. It should also be noted that it was not extremely busy, so it wasn't an issue of trying to turn over the table. I would have left him no tip at all, but sympathized with the fact that he needs $ to buy drugs, so we conceded and left 10%. If the service had been good, I'm sure I would have liked this place, but for fear of encountering that same server, I will never go back. I was so hoping to love this place. It is less than a block from my house but the food and service here was so lackluster, I'm not sure I have any desire to go back ever. We ate outside even though it was threatening rain because I was hungry and the wait was long for an indoor table. I know outdoor tables can have slower service but this was beyond. Especially when I watched out food get delivered to another table, that had been there for much less time than we had. One of the dishes was correct and the other was not what the woman had ordered. She sent it back and the waitress apologized profusely. To that table. She did not apologize to us, and the dish that had been sent back (chicken & waffles) by the other table was delivered to us--cold. It wasn't a great version of chicken & waffles anyway--it was like shake & bake chicken on top of a mediocre waffle. My chilaquiles were at least hot, but they were uninspired. The Texas toast that accompanied it was missing an important part: it was not toasted. The check was slow, even as it started to rain with yet again, no apologies from our waitress. read more

This place has some amazing breakfast tacos among other things! I wasn't super impressed with their biscuits and gravy but that's a tough one to perfect. I wouldn't suggest bringing a group of more than 6 here just because the tables are smaller. Also, the food came out SO FAST; I mean breakfast is usually served pretty quickly but I swear we ordered our food and were eating in less than 10 minutes! The decor is very cool, they have board games and some of the hanging artwork on the wall is for sale! Mmmkay, ordered from GrubHub a Southern Fried Chicken Club. Over an hour and a half later recieved some iced cold curly fries and sandwich from a delivery driver who had his phone glued to his ear. I called the restaurant, told them the issue, and while two different people (including the manager) told me that they have no control over the order in which the deliveries occur (I'm thinking you kinda do), I was nevertheless offered a resolution. The manager offered me 50% off my order or to redo the order. Since I was hungry and at work I opted for the meal do-over. The sandwich was good with all components eaten together, very fresh and good quality ingredients. Really liked the batter on the boneless thigh but could of used a little salt and pepper. Went here on a Tuesday night and damn the fried chicken is good. They have all you can eat fried chicken for $9.99 on Tuesdays and it is some of the finest fried chicken around (even better than Popeye's - although don't tell Tony Bourdain that). They do serve alcohol and have 5-6 beers on the menu including Goose Island Mild Winter, which I ordered, but not much else. Regardless, the food is solid, prices are reasonable, and service is great. Can you ask for much more? Would definitely go back. read more
