This was one of the worst dining experiences EVER. The restaurant was dark, when we entered there was no one in sight. Finally a person appeared ,seated us, and gave us menus. We were the only customers in the restaurant at 6:00 pm. A very long wait and finally we were asked what we would like. My sister had the chicken fried steak that was flavorless and the veggies were terrible. I had a chef salad that was inedible and my son had fish and chips that were over cooked, dry and they didn't even have tartar sauce. While it almost seems unnecessary to review a classic Tacoma spot like Knapp's I feel like I can't let the awesome experience I had today go unmentioned. I had lunch there today with my boyfriend and we both could not have been more pleased with our choice. First of all, the food far surpassed our expectations. The best version of diner or greasy spoon style food I've had in a long time. The chicken wings were crispy and juicy, the taco salad was huge (we split it and still had plenty) and exactly what we wanted, and the fries were classic wide cut diner fries which we probably didn't need to order but we were happy they were on the table none the less. Second of all, the service was amazing. Every person in there probably came to our table at least once to check on us, fill glasses, or take plates. The atmosphere was so comfortable. Our server Angie was charming, funny, and truly was the reason we decided to stay after our first round of drinks. Not only was she an excellent server and clearly great at her job but she did it so easily that it makes you forget what a thankless profession this can be. We are both servers and know how easy it is to check out on a slow day and we appreciated every extra step she took for us. She made us feel like we were regular guests and truly turned our meal into an experience. Honestly we are both in better moods for the rest of the day because we chose to go to Knapp's. My sister moved to Tacoma last year. It is through her that I discovered Knapp's restaurant. She and I have eaten several times here since she has moved here. All of our experiences here have been pleasant, both with the food and the waitresses. But that's an understatement! All of the waitresses that have served us have been very willing to chat with us, yet not too much, so as to slow down serving other customers. But then again, we came during their slow times. If I could remember their names, I would mention them here (to be added in a later update). And of course, the food is not to be outdone as I have always enjoyed whatever I ordered here. Likewise, my sister. What I especially enjoy is being able to eat my cake before we have even ordered our dinner! (They have great cakes) The waitresses took this oddity with the greatest of humor! This is a good old-fashioned American food style restaurant of the type of days gone by. It first opened during the first half of the 20th century (which is the Jurassic age to anyone born since World War II). It is located in the Proctor District of Tacoma. Their menus even give a history of this restaurant! In other words, the atmosphere is pleasant, without loud blaring music. The prices are fair as well. Parking is surprisingly easy, given that this restaurant does not have its own parking lot. If you are lucky, you'll be able to park in one of the angled (now THAT'S Jurassic!) parking spaces right in front of the restaurant. But if not, other street parking has not been too hard for us to find. But then again, we have only come here on weekends. All bets are off re: easy parking during the weekdays. read more

We came here because we recently met one of the staff members that work there. She herself is an amazing person and we were hoping that maybe she was working at the time. Turns out she was not, and the staff that was there didn't show much care for us. This is our first time here - we had one party come in just before us and one after us. We were asked what we would like 20 minutes after sitting. The party that came in just before us ate and paid, the table behind us that came in just after us was served and we sat there for 30 minutes ..50 minutes total. I'm pregnant, so was even more hungry, and my husband was shaking from being so hungry. We cancelled our order and the waitress said "you don't want your food?" And my husband said, "we waited 30 minutes, I think we are going to go elsewhere" the lady didn't say anything or react .. we also were not checked on the entire visit. We were pretty sad to be honest. We hoped it would be a better experience. We felt like because we weren't regulars like the rest that came in, that we weren't a priority. :( read more

The server was great, especially when my omelet came out with onion and bacon but was only supposed to be sausage & cheese. She gave us a cinnamon roll on the house, very nice of her! When I got the remade one it again, had onion. She was really nice about it and I just had her take it back.. all was fine with everything else, my daughter even said that was the best waffle she ever had! Now, when we were waiting to pay a man came to refill my water (I'm assuming he was the manager) and said to me 'I watched him make your omelet there was no onion in it, I think you just didn't like the Italian sausage' to which I responded 'no, it had onion in it' as a person who absolutely hates raw onion it's easier for me to taste I'm sure. But Don't be rude sir, just let me give you the food that was made incorrectly back without you accusing me of lying! I wasn't rude or causing a scene and actually checked their menu to be sure I wasn't in the wrong before giving it back the second time. While Knapp's may have been around for years offering consistent service and average food. Their new menu gets a 1-star. Here's why. Last week we stopped in for lunch. Having been here many times over the years, we noticed the new menu, but didn't focus on the price increases. Until we got the bill. Our Lunch Order: 1: Monte Cristo with tots and an ice tea 2: Patty Melt with tots and an ice tea. Our bill $47.00 + tip I get the challenges of running a restaurant but when you shake down those that support you, you've crossed the line. Unfortunately for us, Knapp's did just that. We live nearby and have been eating at Knapp's for years. However, it's typically only breakfast when we've had a rough night. There are basically a diner-type area, and a more restaurant like dining area. The food is good and the portions are on the large size. I typically get omelettes and it's probably more food than I should be eating. My wife typically gets the basic eggs, hashbrowns, toast. The food is good and consistent. However, I was not impressed with the biscuits and gravy. The Bloody Mary's are very tasty, but on occasion have come in a small glass, rather than a pint glass. They also have freshly squeezed orange juice. I really can't comment much on the lunch and dinner entrees, as I've only tried a burger one time. It was fine, just nothing remarkable. Prices are maybe a buck or two more than I would like to see. I'm sure we'll be back. read more

Actually, I have been a fan of Knapp's for over 35 years. They have not changed much since I first visited Knapp's in the early 1970s. The quality of food is good and the service is usually excellent, however can be slow during busier times. Friday nights they often have a special of Halibut and Chips with either soup (clam chowder) or salad. This is enough for two people if you get a 2nd salad or chowder. Knapp's clam chowder is some of the best I have ever had. I love clam chowder and have it from some of the trendy expensive places and Knapp's beats them all. The Lounge is a neighborhood standbye, and stand you often have to do but the drinks are a healthy pour and the people very friendly. read more

Consider our visit: My side salad: Quality = NONE, with small bits of black (i.e. rotten) lettuce in the mix Cost = HIGH, an extra $2.95 on top of the dinner price My oysters: Quality = POOR, 8 frozen pre-breaded oysters so overcooked in a fat fryer that I was unable to cut them with a knife (I'm serious!) Cost = TOO HIGH @ $15... ridiculous! Her patty melt: Quality = LOW, nothing more than a standard 3 oz. hamburger patty plus slice of cheese on oilygrilled bread. Came with a 1/4 cup cole slaw (woo hoo!), no fries. Cost = TOO HIGH @ $12... better and cheaper anywhere else. BUT WAIT... THERE'S MORE. Want a steak? Well there's only ONE offered on the menu, a 6 oz. sirloin, for $25! "That's because it comes with shrimp!", explained the waitress. "But I don't want shrimp." Smile, shrug, walk away... that was it.
