Favorite fine dining / Michelin-star restaurant in OC! Can't say enough great things about it! A super intimate, upscale-casual (smart casual vibes with no enforced dress code) restaurant located in the third-floor penthouse of SCP. The space feels intimate because it's on the smaller side, and they thoughtfully stagger reservations so the dining room never feels overcrowded. You can be seated in the main dining room, on the outdoor patio, or on the indoor patio next to the penthouse shops. I come here at least once a year for my birthday because the staff are genuinely warm and make every guest feel special. They clearly care deeply about hospitality and creating a true culinary experience. Honestly, the entire team is top-notch, but on our most recent visit, Kara took especially great care of us. She remembered our preferences, made sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed without needing to ask, and made my birthday feel special while also giving my husband and me space (I dislike when wait staff at smaller restaurants hover - they don't do that at all). The way the staff serves, takes orders, clears, etc. is like a really well-rehearsed dance - they want everything to be paced, smooth, and efficient (without feeling forced or robotic) and it really makes a difference. The food is delicious and beautifully presented, with thoughtful attention put into every detail of the flavor profile and color palette. They NEVER miss. I love how they refresh the menu a few times during the year to showcase seasonal ingredients while still staying true to the restaurant's overall identity. They also have a selection of dining experiences - I always go for the 3 course prefix during lunch and the portion sizes and timing of each course is perfect. Also highly recommend their afternoon tea on Saturdays. Couldn't find a more luxurious afternoon tea experience in OC! I genuinely hope they continue to do well! It's a pleasure to be a guest and feel pampered for a special day or an elevated casual meal with friends/family. Will be back many times in the future!

I didn't know about this place until I was invited to dinner -- a 2-Star Michelin restaurant right in South Coast plaza. Everything about the place is posh and elegant. The wait staff was extremely attentive and, of course, the food was fantastic. As a genre, this kind of fine dining is not really my style. For example, when I order a scallop dish, I expect more than 1 scallop. But this is the thing. And that 1 scallop was perfect. I just wish I could have had a couple more. Presentation is everything here, and while I looked most of it, I did find the ice sculpture for the little can of caviar a but over the top. Not only that ... It actually got in the way, making it harder to scoop out she caviar. One thing though, I did find some of the other dishes a little underpowered ... They could have had more bold flavors. Still, a great experience over about 3 hours.

My boyfriend and I did the afternoon tea menu on Valentine's Day at Knife Pleat and it was a very upscale experience. They require you to prepay for the meal when making the reservation, including tip which I thought was interesting. The afternoon tea set comes with a variety of savory and sweet bites as well as your choice of tea, which can be changed at any time. I opted for the rooibos tea whole my boyfriend tried both the oolong and the green teas. They were all very fragrant and a great pair to the food! My absolute favorite part of the meal was the chicken barquette, which was essentially a chicken salad with curry on puff pastry. It blew my mind and I talked about it for the rest of the day! I also really liked the lobster eclair and the chocolate crunch. I think this was overall a great experience, definitely pricey for what it is but great to try once in your lifetime!

We had to prepay for our meal when we made the reservation. It was quite pricey but I've heard such good things about this Michelin rated restaurant that I wanted to try it, and am I glad I did. Amazing experience and so perfectly executed in terms of service and food. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and very comfortable. We came with the family for a birthday celebration and it was definitely memorable. From the moment we walked in until the end of the meal, everything was perfectly choreographed. Each course was beautifully plated and served at the same time by 4 servers for our party of 4. It felt like a show everytime they brought out the next course. Each item was so delicately made with fresh and colorful ingredients. Everything was so delicious and luxurious. Bravo Chef Tony Esnault for an amazing meal!

I took my mom to Knife Pleat for afternoon tea, and we had a lovely experience overall. Afternoon tea is available on Saturdays only from 11:30 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. and costs $115 per person (plus an additional charge if you would like to add caviar). They serve an assortment of savory and sweet bites (15 total when I went) and a variety of teas (you don't have to commit to one and can change flavors throughout the experience). The presentation was gorgeous and I enjoyed most of the bites (my favorites were the gravlax salmon and tomato tartelette). As expected, the service is excellent and the interior is modern and tasteful. The only recommendation I have in terms of service is to ask people whether they want to switch teas before providing refills. I started with the Sencha and was hoping to try a different tea after one cup, but my cup was refilled before I could say anything. Finally, $115 is certainly more expensive than other afternoon tea experiences, but I thought the overall experience was worth it (at least to try once). I hope to come back in the future to try their lunch/dinner!

Knife Pleat was a huge disappointment for me. Having dined in other Michelin-starred restaurants, I don't believe it meets the caliber at all for that honor in both food and hospitality. The dishes seem like they were going for extremely classic vibes, rather than inventive. Only a few components per plate, nice presentation, and sometimes thoughtful pairings of simple ingredients. A few stand out dishes for me were the venison, scallop, and beet custard. I loved how the fennel and squash made the scallop taste incredibly sweet. The savory caviar texture and smooth custard was phenomenal. All these plates felt cohesive and each component elevated the other. The trout roe and kanpachi tartlette was also a very strong start to the meal. But, the all other dishes just felt disjointed and lackluster. For example, the (barely cooked, tart) cranberry didn't go well with the venison or demi-glace. The sweet potatoes felt like an afterthought. The worst dish of the night was the champagne foam. It had a single grape (I counted!) cut in half at the bottom and a whole cashew. I have no idea what this was going for, but it tasted awful all together. The cheese course was a "truffle brie" that was no bigger than a tide pod and had a handful of undressed frisée. The taste/texture was nothing at all like brie or truffle. The ambience is dim and a bit stuffy. It tucked away on the quieter third floor of South Coast Plaza. We asked for the bread course to go with risotto as recommended to clean up the plate, but it was forgotten and brought several courses later. There were a few other inconsistencies (not refolding napkin after bathroom breaks, not refilling water, etc.). Also, weirdly, the chef visited every table personally to present a dish or say hi, but never even looked at our table once - we felt very unwelcome. Overall, it was bummer for a birthday meal and I will not be back especially at the whopping $900+ price tag.

Of course, the service and ambiance was great. The sink in the bathroom is a bit slow. But it was gorgeous. Everyone was kind and thoughtful. The only thing I'd say is food, which sounds ridiculous. Everything was good, but maybe I expected too much because of the Michelin star? Or because I've been privileged enough to go to other Michelin one stars, but I thought the food was....pretty good. It was thought out and explained, but seemed....cold...very experimental in a 'I can so I will' way and less 'this sounds cool and good' way? In any way, The salad was my favorite.

Knife Pleat at South Coast Plaza is one of the three closest I've found to a proper afternoon tea here in Orange County, and as someone born and raised in Britain for 20 years, I hope that's high praise! Haha! I've been at least five or six times now, and every single visit has been wonderful! The afternoon tea is beautifully done. The tiered stands are a feast: delicate finger sandwiches, scones with clotted cream and jam, exquisite little pastries and macarons, all elegantly presented and genuinely delicious. The tea selection is excellent, and everything tastes as refined as it looks. What keeps me coming back, beyond the quality, is the service. They've consistently and graciously accommodated my allergies every time, which makes such a difference and lets me relax and enjoy the experience fully. The staff are attentive and lovely. If you're looking for an authentic, elegant afternoon tea in Orange County, Knife Pleat is the place. I can't recommend it enough, I'll keep coming back!

All around amazing experience. Service was 10/10 and even better by being synchronized with all good drops offs. At the end, the chef even invited us into the kitchen to observe set up and walk us around. Amazing experience

Having a Michelin starred restaurant right in my backyard, I had to give it a try. The food and service were exactly what you'd expect at this level, refined and excellent. That said, the ambiance left me disappointed. The dining room feels a bit too sterile, and the lack of background music makes the atmosphere almost clinical. On top of that, the wait staff tend to linger nearby, which creates the uncomfortable sense that every move is being watched. It disrupted what could have been a more relaxed experience. While I respect the culinary quality, the overall vibe just isn't for me. I likely wouldn't return unless it's for a stuffy business dinner in which case I wouldn't mind the lack of atmosphere as it's a great back drop for serious conversation.

I've been to Knife Pleat for a dinner and a lunch service. It's located on the third floor of South Coast Plaza and completely surrounded by high end retail stores. For our dinner service, we had the choice of a 4 or 6 course meal. We definitely chose to have wine with our meal. Each plate had its own wine pairing and they were excellent wines. Any of the cocktails are a must. Every one I tried was well balanced. The atmosphere was great too. Open space with a few tables and it was not too loud for conversation. For lunch, you have the option to sit on the patio, but we were inside. Have a nice cappuccino or whatever espresso beverage you like while having a respite from your shopping experience.

An elegant and stylish restaurant that serves high quality French food! And we were happy to try its three-course set lunch menu. Every item was meant to savor if possible for a lifetime. To start, the Champagne with gooseberry and cashew was uniquely crafted, almost playful! The Shima-Aji and French Wine Asparagus were so good they had to be made with the freshest ingredients. It was just hard to let go! For the mains, the Japanese Seabream and Tajima Wagyu were definitely our favorites. The wagyu steak was juicy and so tender it had to be savored slowly! And last but definitely not least, for the dessert the Louis XV a hazelnut cake was beautiful, light and nutty. The Chocolate and Yuzu Sorbet was a nice touch to end a wonderful and satisfying meal. Service was warm and staff described each item from start to end. This is a beautiful restaurant to celebrate a special occasion. A memorable meal!

Entrance/host lobby area is a little snug. We were sat at a large round table. They had kids menus for my girls. We ordered Pellegrino and a bottle of wine. The caprese was really nice and refreshing. Served with arugula on top. They also added I think fried crispy capers on top omg. So good. The carpaccio was. DELICIOUS! Thinly sliced beef, fresh parmigiana, topped with arugula and capers. Probably one of the best I've had. The chef uses his free range of creativity and offers such unique and amazing ingredients in all of his dishes. He truly cares and has a passion for beautiful food. My wife and I know alot of chefs and restaurants in SoCal and this is some of the best food we can find. Chef Jonathan and his kitchen staff are all one of a kind. They shop for only the freshest ingredients and offer a variety of seasonal dishes throughout the year. The Pork Belly Taco has been a long standing menu item that literally NEVER disappoints. It is incredible. Every tostada the chef creates is amazing. And the Green Goddess dressing on their salad is worthy of bottling and drinking straight. The wine program is also incredible. The range of wine is amazing and everyone on staff is SO knowledgeable about every wine they offer. If you aren't sure about wine or how to pick out you can give them the simplest explanation of what wine you want and they will bring over several bottles to chose from and will give you an in depth and beautiful description of all of them before you decide what you want. Amazing food, wine, music and vibes are all huge perks but what really sets Bar Tinto over the edge is the hospitality and kindness of all the staff. Great for date night, for a night out with friends, a spot to bring the parents too, literally any occasion. We look forward to sitting in tinto and enjoying the food and wine at least twice a week!! Gracias, Bar Tinto! 10/10

Staff was really friendly and accommodating. They recommended an orange wine that we liked. The oysters were fresh too and the bread had a nice crunch. Make sure to purchase tickets for the Jazz night in advanced they do sell out!

Service: Everyone who passed was quick to greet us and check in with us, all of them friendly and welcoming. This continued throughout the meal, and it was awesome to chat with so many people. We even got a few moments with Chef Zach, which was a bonus! Ambiance: The atmosphere is dark (as expected) and lively, with the staff taking turns working the turntables to keep the music going. (I loved this little detail.) Food: Easily a 10/10 food experience, though due to the dark lighting, my pictures don't do the dishes justice! Head to their instagram to see better pics of the food. We had the tuna crudo, hamachi crudo, scotch olives, and wagyu tartare. All of these items were incredible, and those scotch olives were a definite standout. Our bartender Scotty was friendly and attentive, and the rest of the staff was awesome too. We can't wait to return for Chrysalis, and we're looking forward to visiting the new restaurant concept as soon as that's up and running! 10/10 experience all around. Well done!!

We went to Darkroom for my fiancés birthday and were slightly disappointed…read more The good: the steak was really tasty and had different flavor components like the crispy chilli and shishito peppers that complimented the meat very well. It was well balanced and the best dish of the night. The scrambled egg agnolotti was delicious as well and was paired with a savory slightly sour sauce what helped with the heaviness. The bad: We were recommended the house made focaccia to dip into the steak sauce but it was served 15 minutes before the steak came out so was cold by the time we needed it. The biggest disappointment of the night was the $29 tuna crudo. We should have taken the description by face value: tuna, tomato water, vanilla nori oil (we thought this might be the flavor but we were wrong. It was just oil), passion fruit. It quite literally tasted like oily tuna in plain water with passion fruit seeds floating around. The passion fruit overwhelmed the flavor profile. There was so little tuna for the steep price (like 3 sashimi pieces chopped up). It wasn't even a high quality cut. Even if it wasn't, the flavor of the tuna was somehow completed sapped - leaving just the texture. The overall pricing for the menu was very steep with small portion sizes but at least the other plates we had actually tasted good. We also appreciated the complimentary dessert that was given for my fiancés bday. The service was great as well. Looking at previous reviews, it seems that the experimental dishes are either a hit or miss
