Nomad is a hidden gem of the Windsor Park/Cameron Road community that offers way more than one would expect given its location. The bartenders are friendly and know their stuff, which makes everything more pleasant. They have several great Austin beers on tap and a full bar for whatever your drinking desires might be. Combine that with daily happy hours and specials ($1 Tecate + Modelo Especial on Monday, $2 pint night on Tuesday) and you have a great non-downtown bar. The patio area is covered and misted during the hot summer days, so it's a great place to chill. Allegedly the Sunday brunch is worthwhile but I have yet to check it out. Geeks Who Drink Trivia is played on Thursday nights starting at 8pm for you trivia folks. read more

Nomad has changed a lot. I went here a few years ago and felt like it was a typical dive bar, but had some style. The problem now is that it's just a dive bar. I don't like their policy of "well-behaved dogs allowed on patio." You're talking about a bunch of drunk people, who are not well-behaved, screaming and getting in my dog's face. And you just expect her to sit there? Beyond this, the bar is fine. There is usually something interesting going on most nights out of the week--and usually Karaoke Underground every now and then. If you're on the East Side, there are better places (like Sahara Lounge). But go give Nomad a try I suppose. read more

As a dedicated North-Central Austinite, I'm super happy to have Nomad in my neighborhood. I'm Hyde Park now, which is still close, but I used to be off Cameron Road back when they first opened up. It's not a place you would expect to find in our neck of the woods. I've been there once in the afternoon, once around happy hour, and a few times later at night - all have been great. It's cozy and intimate by day, downtown-ish by night. They've got a nice selection of beer (nice, not wide) and the bartenders all seem cool. The owner, Miguel, introduced himself the first time I was there, and remembered me every time I've been back (and also once when I saw him down the street at Carousel). He's super nice. The patio is lovely and feels secluded - in a good way. There are misters! A couple weeks ago, I went to an event there where I got to try a lot of their menu items. Everything was great, especially the empanadas. I've craved them a few times since. read more

At an intrinsic level I really like Nomad's, the atmosphere is great, the decor is subtle but interesting and the people (patrons) are friendly. The problems for me lie in the service (very unfriendly, inefficient and uninterested in general) and all of their "food" offerings. Even if you are starving and wasted out of your mind, I would not recommend their food. The "gourmet" pizzas that they serve are like tomato sauce spread across saltines- I don't think I would feed it to my dogs. They used to have a food trailer outside with AMAZING German food, but the last three times I have been it hasn't been there. The beer selection is great though and they have awesome specials: $1 tecates on Mondays. I've also been meaning to check out their "Geeks who Drink" night on Thursdays because I've heard it's good but haven't made it yet. Another plus is that their patio is dog friendly, so I'll bring the pups every once in a while and there are usually plenty of dogs there to socialize with. Despite the service I will continue to go due to the beer selection and the fact that my friends (and I) can't pass up the $1 tecates. read more

I had a terrific time here on Saturday with my Austin 'family'! The prices are what I expect from a neighborhood bar, and the staff was pretty friendly. Stopped in here for Happy Hour yesterday. It's a pretty cool-looking place. I like the decor and the patio. However, it was 100 degrees outside, and the misters outside were likely only going to make me hot and sticky. If I'm going to be hot and sticky, it'd be for a better reason than that! There are a few places to sit inside, but most of the tables that were left looked uncomfortable, so we opted for the bar. The bartendress was having a bad day. Apparently she walked in to find the women's bathroom overflowing. When we tried to order food, she recommended that we get it somewhere else and bring it in because of the kitchen being "really" backed up due to the bathroom problem. Wha? Ok. We got some beers. I ordered a margarita, and it wasn't very impressive. Though, to be fair, it's not a "margarita place". I also ordered a caipirinha (as they had cachaca), and another bartender made it. It was pretty darn tasty, but way too sweet for my tastes. The manager, Miguel (I think), is a great guy and took care of us. He even encouraged us to order some food when the lady bartender left. We got some Mmmmpanadas, but I won't review those here, as they weren't made in house. Over all, I spent a fair bit of cash, but they have good happy hour deals. $3 select drafts and $3 wells. Will likely be back. I like the vibe of the place, and the service (for the most part) was pretty good. read more

Nomad Bar was at the top of the brunch spreadsheet for months, and every time Los Pollos Manos tried to stop in, they were packed and/or sold out. Of course, that just increased the appeal. Finally, we got in with the cool crowd, and made friends with some regulars at Nomad. Between their awesome brunch buffet with bottomless mimosas, half price champagne on Wednesday nights and super friendly service, this is just the happiest place. I wish I lived closer so I could go more often, but as it is, I've been finding myself here at least once a week lately. read more

This is a great neighborhood bar with a surprising selection considering its location. My favorite time to go is for Geeks Who Drink trivia on Thursdays, but it's a great spot to go just anyway if you live in the area. The drinks are well priced with plenty of local beer on tap to choose from. The only reason they don't get my 5th star is the seating situation is usually pretty dicey, with just really strange options for seating. I realize most people don't care about such things and maybe I'm being picky, but it would be nice to have a simple, normal height table that seats 3-5 instead of either tiny for 2 or giant for 11. :) Otherwise I love it! read more

This was my second time here. The first time was a weekend afternoon and the place was dead but that was perfect for us because we were able to take over for the Uno tournament we were having there. This time it was a Friday night and the place was packed. It was raining out so I think some of the people that may have been inside heading indoors for shelter. I liked the vibe of the place. If I lived North I could definitely see this being a good neighborhood bar. Bonus, my friend met the owner the previous weekend and told him a bunch of us were coming in for happy hour and he hooked us up with food. One of the Steves is responsible for that bar; he's the guy with all the metal sculptures two doors down. Since the only walkable waterhole was previously the Carousel: like look, I love it but sometimes you just wanna water not listen to the music du jour and scream over people--this place is a blessing. FOOD IS AWESOME. Service totally awesome: in fact, Marlin makes the BEST MANHATTAN IN THE CITY. Sorry, Gargoyle, but he does. A hole populated by some of the East Side's best artists, musicians, activists... like we totally planned out our whole precinct's votes on the porch? VERY democrat-friendly. Little "d" on purpose. Dog-friendly, art-friendly, music-friendly, politics-friendly, you seen the bathrooms?! Chalk walls and write or draw anything you want. Good atmosphere and excellent jukebox. Feels classy, but not so classy you can't walk in wearing your paint clothes. Everyone knows your name; the owner made me laugh real hard over the coffee issue. If you dunno, you dunno. Not a good space for people of color! Went there a while ago with a date (we are both Black) and was interrupted by one of the bartenders with an unwarranted joke at our table. The joke went along the lines of "what do you say to a black guy in a bar?". I was completely dumbfounded, like really?! It was super inappropriate, uncomfortable and odd. Just like yelp says, this place is A-OK! My boyfriend and I live in Windsor Park and this is our favorite local spot. Its quirky without being like the carousel lounge and its moderately priced with some good drink specials. Patio is fantastic and I can bring my dog (score!!) Nomad isn't the best bar you'll go to in Austin but its a neighborhood treasure thats well deserving of the praise. My first experience here was weird, and now I've been back a million times and love it, so I think it's important to re-review! I love the magician that's randomly there some days. I also love Wednesday half-price bubblies, unless today is Thursday. Then I hate Wednesday half-price bubbly. LOL Get the Moscow Mule. Enjoy the amazing patio. The bar staff is awesome. Came here for "Geeks Who Drink" and this place was hopping! SO hopping it was super hard to find a place to sit, but we found a way to wedge ourselves in a corner near the door. We had a lot of fun and they had a decent drink special for pitchers and happy hour lasted until 10PM! The service was pretty non-existent there, however, so if you want to order something - good luck! You will have better luck getting it at the bar. I walked into Nomads to meet some friends I haven't seen in many moons. As exciting as that was, the show-stealer had to be half-price bottles of sparkling wine. Naturally, we each ordered one and sipped em down. Bartenders were super helpful and fun. All suggestions were much appreciated! There was some talk of foosball but it never panned out. My boyfriend's holiday party was at Nomad Bar last night, and it was so much fun! The bartenders were actively involved in the festivities, keeping up with everyone's drinks, making sure there was plenty of pizza and popcorn on the tables, and making conversation all the while. The service was impressively friendly and quick. The bar itself is small and dark, but not in a dingy way. Actually, I was quite surprised at how invited the atmosphere was. And I'm not sure if this is an all-the-time thing, but there was karaoke, which just added a fun vibe to an already enjoyable locale. Also, the bathrooms were clean and big, which was a welcome surprise. It was a great experience and I look forward to going back soon. The only thing was that the popcorn and pizza were a little odd, but when you're drinking, it doesn't really matter much. It's a bar, not a restaurant. read more

I guess I was so busy having fun at Nomad I forgot to write a review. I like Tuesdays because friends go for cheap beer and Mike makes me a really good whiskey sour. Then I get to meet the neighbors and other patrons. Parking is good too, if you drive in instead of walking or biking. Some evenings you can get a grilled meal too- a little pricey but they'll fix what you want. Sometimes you get to hear local surf music too- call to ask when the bands will be playing. The down side- the clocks need to be reset so I'll know if Dr Who comes to take me time traveling. What else could you ask from a neighborhood bar? read more

I really liked this bar. As a local of this 'hood, I was very excited to discover a new, cool place to hang. I frequent Barfly's, but if I feel like a little less dive and a little more class, I'll go to Nomad. The crowd is laid back and friendly, and same can be said for the staff. There is a foos ball table, a Ms. Pacman video game, and darts. The outside patio is great with fun furniture and a misting system to cool off the hot, Texas summer nights. I can imagine this place being pretty cozy during winter time too. I will definitely frequent this bar. The bartenders even went so far as to introduce themselves and ask our names. Very friendly. Well behaved dogs are welcome on the patio. Drink selection was nice....someone commented on not being impressed with the wine selection, and although it is not on par with a 5 star restaurant, it has a nice selection ranging from Vihno Verdes, Malbecs and Syrah's...which to me is a nice change from the usual Chardonnay, Merlot and Reisling (shiver) at most bars. The bar food they offer is also awesome...paninis, empanadas, greek dish of hummus, and thats also a nice change from the usual burger and fries at most places. I second the part about not being turned off about the location and the fact that its in a small strip mall area. Its a great place and has a nice atmosphere and you do forget you aren't downtown. read more

So today we went into this bar which was recommended by a relative who lives here as a place to meet. We decided to go early, about 5:30 PM, so we could get some pizza beforehand until the our relatives arrived. When we walked in there were about half a dozen guys sitting at the bar? We sat at a large table and looked at the pizza menu. For ten or more minutes we sat there and nobody even said hello or recognized that we were even there. Nobody asked us to order at the bar, if that is what we were supposed to do. So we left. We've never been more ignored than this place and would never consider returning. Stay away folks. read more

Hey, Yelp trolls, Parker and Stone called. They want their 2015 "South Park" story arc back. Unlike many of the "reviewers" who have backed the original poster's hyperbolic whinging of "RACISM, BY GUM!!!!" at her affronted behest, I was actually present at the bar that fateful afternoon and witnessed the "altercation" firsthand and in full. And what I observed is the same old story played out in every business everywhere on any given day. To wit: Disparagingly rude customer walks into establishment. When the world does not immediately revolve around them by establishment employee in a time frame that befits their sense of entitlement, they choose to unleash their pent-up vitriol upon said establishment employee, who then chooses whether or not to refuse or simply delay service to said disparagingly rude patron, as is the right of every business. Let me reiterate: I witnessed this whole non-event firsthand, as did several other patrons in the establishment at the time. I didn't think anything of it, because you know, you see this kind of crap all the time everywhere you go, and it would be ridiculous if this kind of thing (e.g. the spreading of disinformation for personal, monetary, political, or simply hateful gain) were not apparently de rigueur in our world today. Again, "South Park." Nomad, and any other self-respecting business, should never acquiesce to rudely solipsistic breaches of social etiquette by patrons. Just be polite, for goodness' sake. It'll take you a long way in the real world. As for the screeching banshee wails of "RACISM, BY GUM!!!!", I can attest that the Nomad staff will throw you out on your ear for being a disparagingly rude individual to them and/or other patrons, and they do not care what color, sexual orientation, religion, ethnicity, species, or political bent you happen to identify with or who accompanies your negative entourage. Patrons who are respectful of others, however, have always been welcome there in my experience. read more

Some of you may know that I like to sing karaoke. I'm not saying I'm good at it, but I still have fun. So far, karaoke has been the only reason I've been to Nomad, and I've had fun every time. They have hosted Karaoke Underground, as was the case last night, and Karaoke Apocalypse, which is the rockin live band to back your vocals. When I arrived last night, the atmosphere was mellow for 10:30 on a Saturday. There weren't nearly enough folks in the room to soak up my imitation of Ian Curtis for Joy Division's "Transmission". (lemme tell ya, it was just short of magical and apparently the Yelpers in attendance have never heard that song before) Who should go up onstage directly after me? None other than Britt Daniel, of Spoon fame. That's right. I basically opened for Spoon. He did pretty well, considering it was his song he was singing. What I thought was odd was how he had to keep looking at the TV screen to sing along! Shouldn't he know the words? Does he have a teleprompter onstage at all Spoon shows? Hope not. Anyway, the service was good. The crowd was a decent mix of people. And everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves to the fullest. I'll have to try this place out when they don't have anything going on to get a well-rounded perspective, but I really have no complaints. The time I went there for KA, it was packed and the service was slow, but it wasn't terrible. The prices aren't as good as Barfly's, and considering the location they should be. Therefore I can't justify 5 stars, but I'm still a fan. When I go back I'll let y'all know how it goes. Maybe I'll be the opening act for Mick Jagger. In the meantime... We ended up leaving and asking ourselves, "What happened to this place?" It's kinda gone downhill. There were flies everywhere, and a drunk mexican dude at the bar trying to talk to me. He probably shouldn't have been served anymore. I ordered a michelada and was looking at their homemade mix. It looked like salsa. My michelada tasted like garlic, despite the fresh lime juice. I asked for hot sauce and she gave me Sriracha. Sorry, but no. I sent the michelada back and decided to drink the leftover beer in the bottle. When I picked it up, there was all this slimy white shit on it. Showed it to the girl, and by this time she looked annoyed, and she said it's probably because it was at the bottom of the cooler. W! T! F! She gave me a new one, but I was ready to GTHO of there. The only thing going for this place now is that Wing-A-Licious caterer guy. Someone call John Taffer now! Went there on July 3rd 2010 at about 6:30 pm, we walked in and there was a bartender inside, I see her and say we are with someone who wants to have drinks on a patio. I would think that would be a good time for the bartender to tell me I have to order from the bar, I guess not. We go to the far end of the patio and are sitting there for quite a while, the bartender girl is talking to the only other table on the patio close to the door and we are at the opposite end of the patio. At this point she screams all the way across the patio, "WE HAVE NO COCKTAIL SERVICE!" Really, there are about 5 people in the entire place, would it really kill you to just bring us drinks, or at least have the courtesy to walk over and tell us and not scream from the other side of the patio. I went inside, ordered one round of drinks and then we left after that as we didn't feel to wanted there. read more
