We were on the first week of a 6 week roadtrip in our Motorhomes and a local merchant in Granbury Texas told us to drive down to Hico TX for a Chicken Fried Steak at the Koffee Kup. We looked it up on the map and hit the road. This is one of those small town family owned cafe's that has truly outstanding food... and amazing prices. I don't know how this restaurant can serve food this inexpensively. I've included the menu photos so you can see prices. The service was warm and friendly... and the food was hot and delicious. This place has been around forever. They r known for their pies and home cooking. They have good staff. The place looks like the usual small town joint. Now for home cooking- just not true. I had chicken fried steak that was all breading and the toughest, most tasteless meat I've eaten. It comes with cream gravy that is an instant gravy mix with no seasoning and is just awful. My husband had the chopped beef steak served with instant beef gravy. WTH? Now the pies. There is nothing homemade about them. Canned fillings and store bought crusts. What a disappointment. Not only a few dishes there,but all on their menu are made in-house. The only way they can capitalize on that is if they had their own gardens and whatever vegetables or spices they use everyday was picked fresh from the garden. When they say that they have 17 pies made fresh, BELIEVE IT!! The way their entire staff treats patrons and not just every once in a while, but all of the time really says something. Our waitress we had onetime named Melissa was very quick on coming to refill our drinks, cking to see if everything is going well and asking us if we really enjoyed ourselves. Was in the area and stopped in to see what all the fuss was about. Service was great and the Reese's pie was pretty good but sadly that's about it for the high points. I ordered the mushroom Swiss burger with onion rings and the patty was over cooked even though I specified medium and onion rings were bland and overcooked as well. Wife ordered chili cheese burger with curly fries and again the patty was parched and unfortunately the fries and the chili were the only thing she was able to eat. The hubs had a BLT, I had a patty melt and we shared onion rings. The sandwiches were pretty good. The onion rings were tasteless. Koffee Kup is known for their pies so of course we each got a slice. This last visit was our second - and we thoroughly enjoyed our time here. The service was super friendly and efficient - especially so for a "small town" cafe. We always enjoy getting away from the DFW metroplex and back to small town Texas, which is the environment I grew up in. People say "please," "thank you," and "excuse me" - easy pleasantries that get quickly muddled down in the city. We drive from the Dallas area to the Hill Country frequently down Highway 281, and as soon as we clear Glen Rose we breathe easy and enjoy being around people so much more. Koffee Kup captures that spirit of what it is to be truly Texan. The service is great and the food is warm and comforting. You feel welcome here. My girl and I split a Grand Slam sandwich and onion rings for our meal. The sandwich is huge - easily one you can split with a loved one. But make sure you really, REALLY love that person, because this sandwich is amazing. A perfect balance of meat, cheese, veggies and bread hits your palate like a freight train of flavor. The meat has the right amount of saltiness that the cheese picks up and carries through. All of that flavor is also lightly enhanced by their special sauce - a mayo based concoction that elevates the sandwich to an entirely new level of goodness. As for the onion rings, my girl loves the texture but thinks they are a bit bland. I tend to agree but that is what my huge glob of heavily peppered ketchup is for - to bring the rings what they need to make them memorable. Highly recommend this Texas staple. read more

I'm giving the Koffee Kup four stars with a little hesitation. Having seen it on various Texas travel shows I was expecting an almost religious experience foodwise and it fell just a little short. But the food and the service was good overall. I had the chicken fried steak with baked potato and (if I remember) green beans. The sides were great. But the CFS needed a little more seasoning to my taste. The meat was real steak with a hearty breading. The gravy was tasty. Both benefited from salt and pepper. Also, the steak was large which is always a plus. My friend had a burger and curly fries. She loved both and even gave me a taste. Her burger consisted of a thick well seasoned patty, pepper jack cheese and guacamole. Service was efficient and very friendly. We'll be back and next time I'll probably give the CFS another taste. read more

Koffee Kup was recommended to us because we were driving through Hico. I read the reviews and wasn't sure what to expect. I think this is a place for you if you are more about enormous affordable portions vs. taste or quality. (Or maybe they are better at breakfast food. Not sure.) And that is perfectly fine, just not for me. Super affordable, very filling, not really about delightfully tasty bites! Lol. It's an old place, but decently clean. The vibe was not overly friendly among the other diners, but our server was lovely. It felt like a local watering hole where folks just want quick, filling food without a hassle. Not really catering to the out of town folks looking for a tasty meal while on the road. My husband got the chicken fried steak and I got a burger and onion rings. The food was generous in size but mostly beige and not super tasty. The onion rings and burger itself were tasteless. None of it tasted homemade, more like store bought gravy or from jars/powder. Which honestly, prob helps make it super affordable, which may be part of the appeal for a lot of folks. My husband's lunch came with a bread pudding dessert that we both (somewhat reluctantly) tried. It was, again, filling but super sweet, covered in what might have been condensed milk out of a can. We skipped the pie. I know there is a lot of history here and they have a reputation and style that work for lots of folks, just not quite for us. read more

I'm not gonna lie. The only reason I stopped in this town was because of its dark history of being a "sun down" town and the previous painting of a not so savory mural that was removed in the early 2000's. Then I read about this place that was once called the Koffee Kup Kafe. The name was changed for obvious reasons. The wife and I visited this shop to see what if any history remained considering the restaurant name change and mural removal. We observed a wall of salt and pepper shakers of all varieties. It was pretty cool to see. The ones that stood out the most were molded in the shape of "the help" from back in the day. Those pictures already exist on their Yelp page and don't need to be shared again. We both ordered pies and they were pretty. The only strange thing was they didn't take credit card or debit card. They were a cash only business. I've never heard of such a place but there it was. Some things may never change. I'd recommend checking this place out just for the experience. read more

We ordered the special ( chicken fried steak with cream potatoes and fried okra) and it was ok. I had to use a lot of salt and pepper to season it and add flavor. The chicken sandwich was a huge disappointment. It was a filet and thinner than the tomato slices we asked for another piece of chicken and it was just as thin. This place is supposed to be known for their pie. I was super excited to get my slice of pie only to be disappointed again- super small slice. This was our second attempt to try this place out since our first time was not that great. Went in for a cup of coffee and a piece of pie. I ordered a lemon meringue pie and I think what I got was in the lemon cream pie with no lemon.. I was expecting this to be a lemon meringue, and it had the meringue, but it was more like a cream pie with little to no lemon. Key lime was very key limey and good... lemon pie needs more lemon. The fiancee and I stopped in for lunch on the way from Dallas to San Antonio. After hearing so much about the Koffee Kup Family Restaurant I was eager to try it out. All I can say is that fine dining, it ain't. Nor should it be considered as such. Having grown up in a small town the size of Hico I had an idea of what to expect. My fiancee ordered the chicken sandwich and it was super dry and very tough to chew. The only reason she ate most of it was because she was hungry. That said, it came with a side of HUGE onion rings were very good and very crumbly. They are very popular although it seems like not many folks are able to finish the entire order. I ordered the chicken fried chicken which was very tender and tasty for the first few bites. The rest was tough to cut, and while it had good flavor, it tasted slightly under-cooked. Their baked potato comes only with sour cream and butter. You can add bacon for an extra $2.29 but I passed. It was nothing to write home about, but wasn't bad at all. Unfortunately, the rolls and biscuits all seemed a bit hard, although they tasted okay. Koffe Kup advertises 17 different kinds of homemade pie and they had all of them but Cherry on our visit. The fiancee ordered pecan and I had key lime pie. Both were excellent and well worth the $5 price tag. We both agreed that was the best part of the meal. All in all, we didn't find it worth the hype. We would have no problem returning for pie and coffee, tho. If traveling thru Hico alone, I would probably stop in, but there's no way I would convince my better half to try anything off their menu again. The Koffee Kup is a joint justly famous for its pie. So I stopped in for a bite o' sweetness & some caffeine as I was passing through Hico. Coffee was strong, as I had hoped. Flavor was good straight ahead cuppa Joe. Waitress was good about keeping it topped up. For about $1.60 it was a good value. The slice of black forest pie I ordered was worth the $5 ticket price to me. The crust was okay to good, flaky with no staleness or odd flavors evident. The bottom filling layer was chocolate pudding. Next up was a layer of chocolate mousse. Over that was a thick layer of whipped cream that was topped with shaved chocolate, walnuts, & a maraschino cherry. The texture in the mouth was very, very smooth and very, very rich. The differencence of chocolate density in the pudding and mousse made a nice contrast in the taste of the pie. I'd order their black forest pie again in a heartbeat. read more

Recently moved to north Texas from the Austin area. Driving back and forth between my old and new homes, I had repeated occasion to pass through Hico. When discussing these road trips with my new coworkers, I was asked if I had eaten at Koffee Kup... My new friends passed on two rumors, both of which they insisted were true: 1. Koffee Kup has amazing food. Some of the best in Texas. 2. The Koffee Kup was, and possibly still is, a meeting place and local HQ for the Ku Klux Klan. Since I consider myself a food snob, as well as a committed skeptic, I decided to launch an investigation to see if I could confirm or debunk one or both of these rumors. The first one was fairly straightforward. I just had to go there and eat a couple times. I did so. I am sad to report that the first rumor is debunked. The Koffee Kup is pretty much a typical Texas small town diner. Not that that is a bad thing. They offer a limited menu with typical dishes... hamburgers, sandwiches, chicken-fried this and that. You get the picture. The food was not bad, but was not any better than any of the other dozens of roadside diners I've eaten at in my lifetime. I will say that I did not try the pies, which seem to be their culinary claim to fame, and which really did look good sitting in a glass case behind the cashier station. The service was friendly and prompt. All in all, a thoroughly three-star dining experience. The second rumor proved much more elusive. A quick internet search revealed a couple of blog posts in which people discussed the "rumor" or "legend" that the Koffee Kup was a KKK meeting place. Several reviewers on Yelp and other sites have cited these blog posts as "proof" that the second rumor is true. I'm sorry, but if the source you are citing describes the information as a "rumor" that proves nothing. Another supposed piece of evidence is that the full name of the place used to be the "Koffee Kup Kafe" as opposed to the current "Koffee Kup Family Restaurant." Obviously making the initials "KKK" in a not-so-subtle nod to the Klan. I tried to find any proof of this prior name and when it was changed. I came up with nothing. You would think that there would be some sort of historical photograph showing the old name on the side of the building or a menu or something... I found zip on Google. Oddly, I did find prior or existing restaurants called Koffee Kup Kafe in northern Michigan, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Arnolds Park, Iowa, and Stoughton, Wisconsin. I have found blog posts and message board comments dating all the way back to 2004 alleging that the restaurant was at one time called "Koffee Kup Kafe," but I still have not seen anything that I would consider proof of this. While I was in the restaurant, I didn't feel comfortable asking my waitress or the manager about the rumors, since I was not sure how they would react, and the possibility of getting beat down or run out of town by the mostly local crowd seemed unappealing. But fear not, gentle readers, I did the next best thing... I called the business before writing this review. A female answered the phone and I explained who I was and why I was calling. She handed the phone to her manager, Irene. I told Irene that I was trying to get to the bottom of the KKK rumors, and she told me, "I'm sorry, we are really busy. I don't have time for this." Then she hung up on me as I thanked her for her time. She sounded distinctly irritated, and I got the feeling this was not the first time she had received such a call. I will say that both times I ate at the Koffee Kup, there were people of color working there. In fact, I would go so far as to say that almost half the employees are latino/latina. This is noteworthy since demographically Hamilton County, Texas (in which Hico sits) is 93% white. I'd think that if a business was Klan-affiliated they would not allow people of color to be over-represented as employees. I also saw multiple non-white customers being served while I was there. They seemed to be treated as well as anyone else. I certainly didn't see anyone wearing sheets, hoods, or less-obvious signs of white supremacist ideology. At the end of the day, I will neither debunk or verify the rumor that this place was historically the site of KKK activity. I was unable to find any proof of that, but it is hard to prove a negative. I will say confidently that there is no sign of such activity now. If you are planning to trash this business based on internet rumors, know two things: 1. You are likely wasting your time. This place has a very loyal local following, and is not going to be shut down by a few negative internet reviews. 2. Instead of attacking the local KKK HQ, you are attacking a small local business which employs multiple people of color, all of whom seemed happy in their jobs. To sum up... If you choose not to eat here, do it because you think you can find better food elsewhere, not because of internet rumors. read more

Finally tried this place after stopping in Hico to stock up on chocolate over at Wiseman House. I only tried the pie so I have no idea how the rest of the menu rates. I will say it was packed at 11am on a Friday and everyone looked happy. I had the banana blueberry cream cheese pie. I expected it to be banana cheesecake topped with blueberries but it was more like banana cream topped with whipped cream cheese frosting and blueberries in syrup. It was very rich but delicious! Only reason for the 4 stars was because the pie crust wasn't my fave. I'm a bit of a crust snob, though, and $5.50/slice seemed a little pricey for a Texas small town cafe. read more

We were shopping in another area of the town and a local recommended the pie here. We decided to swing in and give it a try. They were very friendly and we sat ourselves. Ordered two coffees and two pieces of pie. Chocolate meringue and The Doctor. The meringue was perfect and a mile high! Light, fluffy and not too dry. The chocolate was homemade with a shortening crust. The Doctor pie reminded me of an everything bar. Condensed milk, cream cheese and coconut. It was so creamy and good. Passing through? Oh man am I blessed this place isn't in San Diego.  I would weigh 600 lbs. if they were.  If I were to use this place to buy holiday pies I would've already eaten most of them. So good. My companion and are headed for a week in the DFW area for the week. As we enjoy scenic routes, we headed up Hwy. 281 and went through Hico. The large Koffee Kup sign at the main intersection caught our eye, so we decided to take a break for lunch. There's nothing that stands out about the Koffee Kup; just one in a never-ending line of small town eateries complete with kitche like a collection of salt and pepper shakers. The restaurant was clean, the place was fairly empty so we were seated immediately. When we ordered water, we caught a small frown from our waitress. "Just water," she asked. Just water, thank you. The menu was fairly extensive but my companion settled on a Grand Slam Wrap; me, the Grand Slam sandwich with a side of onion rings. We waited over twenty minutes before inquiring about our order; with but a few tables occupied, the timing should have been better. The only response I got from the waitress was, "It won't be long now." When the order arrived, we were both happy with our choices. Both of our orders consisted of shaved ham and turkey, grilled on the flattop with the usual burger toppings of lettuce, tomato (fresh!) and onions. For cheese, there was a combination of Cheddar and Swiss. The difference between our orders was only the bread; a whole wheat tortilla for her, hamburger bun for me. Both versions of the Grand Slam were stuffed with meat and quite satisfying. However, as filling as they were, they lacked in the flavor department. They were in no way flavorLESS, just not flavorFUL. For those of you from the East Coast who remember fried bologna sandwiches, this is a Southern take on the same. But it was the onion rings that stood out. As you can see from my photo, even just a side order is more than generous. These are not the wilted frozen variety but the type you'd make at home--thick cut fresh onions coated with a thin, crispy batter, These alone made our visit worthwhile; unfortunately, not worthwhile enough than to merit more than three stars, If you find yourself in Hico and your tummy is screaming, "FEED ME," you might want to give the Koffee Kup a try. By the way, they are "famous" for their pies; I took a look and decided not to partake as most are meringue pies, 90% meringue, 10% pie. At $4,99 a slice, no thank you. read more

02/17/19 Sunday 6:15pm. The place was super packed! We sat ourselves, and were greeted promptly. We opted for the onion rings versus the fried pickles. While we waited our rolls came out, hot and perfect! Next our onion rings; the order was huge!! Under salted, sweet onions and crispy battered, but not greasy. Cold ranch dressing yum! Before we got 2 bites eaten our salad came out. Your basic bagged salad which was okay, but unimpressive. Moments later our chicken comes out. I will say it was fried for sure; I had to take a napkin and soak up the oil. We ordered a bake potato, nothing special. It comes with butter and sour cream anything else is extra. There was plenty of food! The chicken like everything else lacked salt. We salted and it tasted pretty good. The gravy was the packaged cheap crap so disappointed with that. Hubby made it to dessert. He had the peanut butter cup pie. Named that only because it has a small 1/2 of s mini peanut butter cup decorating the top, otherwise it should have been most aptly named a peanut butter pie. All peanut butter mousse type filling with gross cool whip and the obligatory peanut butter offering on top. We both despise meringue and most of the other pies had meringue. It was not terrible and we have certainly paid more for much worse it just wasn't what we felt was advertised on the menu as peanut butter cup pie, no chocolate was present. I will say the service was excellent. They actually seemed to enjoy their jobs and the locals. By the time we leave at 7:00 the parking lot is packed and they are parking next door. We pull on to the highway and directly across the street is the Sonic with not one car in the parking lot. Kind of sad really. Apparently Koffee Kupp is the place to be. We would stop again if we are going this way. "Pie fixes everything" says the sign over the pie case... But for this visit, I think not. I know the Koffee Kup Kup is revered as a pie mecca, but on this visit the strawberry pie was just the last disappointment of a mediocre breakfast. The biscuit was the best part, but the flour and water "gravy" had no flavor. Our eggs satisfied our hunger, but not our souls. The badly dehydrated strawberry, bedded in what my brother (a trained chef) described as "whipped topping from a powder", on top of a slice of over-priced pie (around $5) just added insult to injury. We both decided in burgers since they brought some over to the next table and they looked great. I had the mushroom, Swiss and sautéed onions burger. Wow!!!! It's was amazing. Maybe a few too many onions but everything tastes great. She had a regular cheeseburger and it tasted good but she asked for medium well and got it medium rare. She had the blueberry banana pie and it was pretty good. I didn't like he combination but she did. I went with the pumpkin pie and it was out of this world good.
