My companion and are headed for a week in the DFW area for the week. As we enjoy scenic routes, we headed up Hwy. 281 and went through Hico. The large Koffee Kup sign at the main intersection caught our eye, so we decided to take a break for lunch. There's nothing that stands out about the Koffee Kup; just one in a never-ending line of small town eateries complete with kitche like a collection of salt and pepper shakers. The restaurant was clean, the place was fairly empty so we were seated immediately. When we ordered water, we caught a small frown from our waitress. "Just water," she asked. Just water, thank you. The menu was fairly extensive but my companion settled on a Grand Slam Wrap; me, the Grand Slam sandwich with a side of onion rings. We waited over twenty minutes before inquiring about our order; with but a few tables occupied, the timing should have been better. The only response I got from the waitress was, "It won't be long now." When the order arrived, we were both happy with our choices. Both of our orders consisted of shaved ham and turkey, grilled on the flattop with the usual burger toppings of lettuce, tomato (fresh!) and onions. For cheese, there was a combination of Cheddar and Swiss. The difference between our orders was only the bread; a whole wheat tortilla for her, hamburger bun for me. Both versions of the Grand Slam were stuffed with meat and quite satisfying. However, as filling as they were, they lacked in the flavor department. They were in no way flavorLESS, just not flavorFUL. For those of you from the East Coast who remember fried bologna sandwiches, this is a Southern take on the same. But it was the onion rings that stood out. As you can see from my photo, even just a side order is more than generous. These are not the wilted frozen variety but the type you'd make at home--thick cut fresh onions coated with a thin, crispy batter, These alone made our visit worthwhile; unfortunately, not worthwhile enough than to merit more than three stars, If you find yourself in Hico and your tummy is screaming, "FEED ME," you might want to give the Koffee Kup a try. By the way, they are "famous" for their pies; I took a look and decided not to partake as most are meringue pies, 90% meringue, 10% pie. At $4,99 a slice, no thank you. read more

"Pie fixes everything" says the sign over the pie case... But for this visit, I think not. I know the Koffee Kup Kup is revered as a pie mecca, but on this visit the strawberry pie was just the last disappointment of a mediocre breakfast. The biscuit was the best part, but the flour and water "gravy" had no flavor. Our eggs satisfied our hunger, but not our souls. The badly dehydrated strawberry, bedded in what my brother (a trained chef) described as "whipped topping from a powder", on top of a slice of over-priced pie (around $5) just added insult to injury. 02/17/19 Sunday 6:15pm. The place was super packed! We sat ourselves, and were greeted promptly. We opted for the onion rings versus the fried pickles. While we waited our rolls came out, hot and perfect! Next our onion rings; the order was huge!! Under salted, sweet onions and crispy battered, but not greasy. Cold ranch dressing yum! Before we got 2 bites eaten our salad came out. Your basic bagged salad which was okay, but unimpressive. Moments later our chicken comes out. I will say it was fried for sure; I had to take a napkin and soak up the oil. We ordered a bake potato, nothing special. It comes with butter and sour cream anything else is extra. There was plenty of food! The chicken like everything else lacked salt. We salted and it tasted pretty good. The gravy was the packaged cheap crap so disappointed with that. Hubby made it to dessert. He had the peanut butter cup pie. Named that only because it has a small 1/2 of s mini peanut butter cup decorating the top, otherwise it should have been most aptly named a peanut butter pie. All peanut butter mousse type filling with gross cool whip and the obligatory peanut butter offering on top. We both despise meringue and most of the other pies had meringue. It was not terrible and we have certainly paid more for much worse it just wasn't what we felt was advertised on the menu as peanut butter cup pie, no chocolate was present. I will say the service was excellent. They actually seemed to enjoy their jobs and the locals. By the time we leave at 7:00 the parking lot is packed and they are parking next door. We pull on to the highway and directly across the street is the Sonic with not one car in the parking lot. Kind of sad really. Apparently Koffee Kupp is the place to be. We would stop again if we are going this way. It was as good as expected which is a good thing, nothing fancy, but hot fresh and greasy spoon home cooking. 3 stars for the food the service bumped it up to a 4. read more

Can't come this part of central Texas without stopping at the Koffee Kup cafe. We had a late lunch but wanted to save room for the pie. We both decided in burgers since they brought some over to the next table and they looked great. I had the mushroom, Swiss and sautéed onions burger. Wow!!!! It's was amazing. Maybe a few too many onions but everything tastes great. She had a regular cheeseburger and it tasted good but she asked for medium well and got it medium rare. She had the blueberry banana pie and it was pretty good. I didn't like he combination but she did. I went with the pumpkin pie and it was out of this world good. The only reason it went from five stars to four stars is getting her burger wrong and not cooking it long enough. I'll come back though. read more

The is a great place. I grew up small town texas and so this place struck a chord with me. But the crispy house made onion rings sealed the deal. Had the charbroiled chop steak which was sooo good! Nasty place dirty place. Had two bad experiences. The last time the waitress sprayed me with cleaning solution while wipinthe table and today there was nasty dead flies everywhere including in my food. Never eating there again. I have had breakfast there sadly and it was good. They should probably stick to breakfast but i will never go back there regardless. read more

Stopped on way from San Antonio to Weatherford. What an awesome place - ordered a chocolate meringue pie and a multi-slice pie that included the peanut butter meringue pie, Black Forest pie, key lime, and good ol' fashioned apple pie. Every piece was a winner in our group! The peanut butter meringue was surprisingly light and airy, and the Black Forest was heavenly with just a slight hint of cherry. I don't like cherries so I thought the pie was amazing! The chocolate meringue was a huge hit with our die-hard chocolate fans, and the classic apple pie had a perfect, buttery crust with a tart, slightly sweet apple filling. The key lime pie was just as delicious as the others, so there is no real winner. But if I had to choose one, I think the peanut butter meringue pie would take the gold! And while we were checking out, I noticed a plate of fried chicken, rolls, and mashed potatoes with gravy go by on a tray. OMG!!! I will be back to give that a try! The worst I've had, staff was terrible. I was only in Hico for a getaway, obviously not coming back but for those looking for a place I guess try this place before 11 am for breakfast. We got there at 11:14am and it was lunch time. It's ok, but i do regret not paying attention to what people where ordering. It was thanksgiving plate special. I didn't even touch my food it was so bad. The biscuit and gravy was terrible, biscuit was ok but gravy was definitely powder. Rolls was ok, coffee cup was ok too. Good service and great food. Can't go wrong with chicken fried steak, gravy and onion rings. We though we were forgotten a few minutes but the waitresses changed shifts and all was good. I had a club sandwich today that was very good. Bacon was the star of the show and their BLT sandwich is a good choice as well. Save room for homemade pie if you dare or take a piece home. Drive out of your way if needed to eat here and explore Hico while you are there. There is a lot to see and do. There is an inexpensive RV park in the city park if you want to stay overnight. read more

Very nice staff. Pies are so.completely overrated I cannot imagine how this place got such a longstanding good reputation. Strawberry pie is topped with kool whip and the strawberries were either under or over ripe. The jello filling is gross. The crust tastes store bought. Same with the coconut merangue. Merangue seems homemade but cannot make up for the instant pudding flavor of the pie. Save yourself $5.00 a slice ans get a frozen Sara Lee. Onion rings are the best item here. Please, someone open up another real bake shop in Hico. read more

We have eaten here numerous times over the last 6 months while looking for land in the area. We have tried a large part of their menu and all we can say is it's all good. We have tried several of the pies and while they have all been good, do give the Dr pie a try. We at least get it to go if we are trying another. All of the waitress staff were wearing mesh masks. The kind you wear over a real mask. You could easily see their mouths and noses under it. They were just for show. And the girl that was ringing us up and making my to go pies had her proper mask down on her chin. The older lady manager behind the counter with the food had hers hanging by her ear. Hello Hico!! Pie Fixes Everything! Came here for the pie of course. But needed a little something to eat first. I wasn't that hungry so I had grilled cheese and fried okra. Hubby had the Cactus Jack Burger with onion rings. LOVED the fried okra. Onion rings were yummy too. Grilled cheese hit the spot. Burger was so big you had to almost eat it with a fork!!! Pie. Yes pie! Plenty to choose from and we had the Black Forrest and the Reese's. Black Forrest was rich and full of chocolate. The Reese's was rich and delicious. We could have just had one slice and shared it...but we were set on having our own. We were on our way back to Ft Worth from Austin and took the back roads to avoid 35 traffic and construction. We were at a table next to the Sheriff, local police of chief and friends of theirs..that told us that we picked a good spot. Place was packed! We ordered a slice of the Doctor's Office, whatever this was the best pie I have ever had!Hope I can copy it after I deconstructed it while eating to make at home. A slice of pie is $4.99 w/whole pies around $16.99. They do most of their pies with meringue topping, like mile high and just beautiful, but I prefer creme topped pies. I was in Hico driving up TX-281 and my road trip buddies said we had to stop at the Koffee Kup for some of its famous pie. I'l never pass up a unique road trip stop off for some local eats. And to just eat pie? Sounds so gluttonously wonderful. We sat down and they quickly offered up the menu... no menu needed, just show us the pie. There was about 10 or so different pies to choose from. Fruit pies, cream pies, meringue pies... you name it they have it. I personally couldn't resist the urge to get the one called Doctors Office pie. It had cream, it had pudding, it had graham crust. It was so sweet and sugary the only thing that would have made it better is if they offered it Ala Mode, although I didn't ask. My other two buddies ordered two different pies. They both said they were delicious and decadent. Only thing that raised my eyebrow was the 5ish dollar price of the pie. Guess once you get country famous for pie you can knock it up a few bucks. Nothing better to wash down your dessert with than some piping hot diner coffee. It was so scalding hot I don't think I could drink it for the 20 minutes we were at the table. I asked for a to-go cup which was similar to a shot glass and drank it 40 minutes later when it wouldn't melt the skin off the inside of my mouth. But I'm not going to lie, i was a little taken back by the "Cash Only" policy. Seriously, people will line up to sell you merchant services along with places like Walmart/Sams/Costco who sell the machine and services. Just get on board and suck up the merchant fees, you charge 5 bucks for pie for God's sake. I would do it all over again if I was traveling through Hico, although next time I'd sure like to try some food along with my pie. read more

Was pretty crowded, and not very clean. The waitress used a towel from table to table to wipe them off....I carry disinfectant wipes with me.. This has always been a pet peeve of mine. However, having said that, the biscuits were from scratch, and very good. My hashbrowns were excellent. Unfortunately, my husband's eggs, toast, and bacon were cold. My pancakes were burnt. They did offer to make it right, and credited our meal. I think they were overwhelmed with the amount of people in the restaurant. I think with a few improvements this could be a rare gem. I didn't taste their pies, which they are famous for, but the food was bland. Their batter for frying is delicious, but the chicken fried chicken was without seasoning. Seems like they season less and makeup with their batter, which doesn't always work. I have been stopping at the KKK for 30 years going to deer hunt near Kerrville. Back in the old days, original owner. the waffles were huge, and served with melted butter, OMG with Texas pecans, the best. The last couple years, new owners, it seems they went into trying to make more money and cut quality. I was there last Saturday with my daughter,. we stop at the Kup, every year while on our Father- Daughter deer hunt. Its tradition. I ordered the pecan waffle and as stated above in another review, it was flat, hard and cold, YUCK. My daughters breakfast was sub par too. we will find another place i guess. our server, was slow and not trained well. just not the same, really bad. Well if you ever find yourself in Hico Texas and you're hungry the coffee cup is about the best bet. This is the second time my family has eaten there. My sister is on a mission to eat Texas monthly's top 50 hamburgers. So the coffee cup was a must stop for her. If you are in a hurry this is not the place for you! Expect to be there for an hour. I ordered the chili cheese burger... They need to rename it. It's really cooked hamburger meat on top of the hamburger patty. Don't get me wrong it's good. But it's meat on meat. No chili. I have only been here once before and that was back in 2009, but I don't even remember how it was. I was told that the chicken fried steak was made fresh and so was the gravy. Well, I am a chicken fried steak lover and I know a good one, so of course I ordered it. Oh, I guess I should mention the once again robotic service I got. I tried the chicken fried steak and it sure did look pretty, but the looks didn't translate to taste. There was absolutely no flavor at all in the CFS and the gravy tasted like a mix, looked like a mix, but they sure assured me that it was fresh. Ok, I will let them have a play on the word fresh, it may have been fresh out of a box, but it sure wasn't from scratch! I sent the food back and the cook got offended and made sure I knew about it. Disclaimer- This review is for pie only. Coconut Meringue- Let me first admire the mile high meringue. Never have I seen such a wonderfully shaped and consistent meringue. The Koffee Kup has clearly perfected this art and it should be photographed and framed on the wall. The coconut pie portion was a delicious delight with just the right amount of coconut (coming from a coconut admirer). It's also finished with coconut shavings atop the meringue. Yum! A Koffee Kup favorite. Chocolate Meringue- Another beautiful meringue display. The chocolate was not overwhelming or too dense. It had more of a pudding consistency and was very tasty. A recommend for the chocolate lover. Pecan Pie- The description reads that it has a Carmel center which is a bit misleading. It is a standard pecan pie. Very good, not too sweet with toasted pecan crunchy top. Recommend if you enjoy pecans. Reese's Pieces Pie- A very good choice for the peanut butter lover. It contains two different layers of peanut butter, the first was a bit more dense and the second was more fluffy. Followed by a white whipped topping. Was a bit sweet but not overwhelming. I give it a peanut butter covered thumbs up! Banana Blueberry- For banana lovers only. The base of the pie is filled with sliced bananas-lots of them. The bananas are then covered in a cream cheese filling, with a small amount of blueberry filling on top. I was most disappointed in this pie. I love banana and blueberry pie so I was curious to try the marriage of the two. The cream cheese filling was too sweet and too dense, it needed to be cut with something (sour cream perhaps). I also was not a fan of the thick blueberry filling which tasted artificial. Overall was ok, but would not get again. Other useful info- You can pay with cash or check only. They also have a drive thru to order your pies or other tasty food to go! Still have a sweet tooth after you're done? Head next door to Weismans Chocolate for some more homemade treats! read more

I had the grilled chicken salad and my husband had the chicken fried steak and an order of fried mushrooms. The mushrooms were delicious. They are hand battered, but with just the right amount of batter. The chicken fried steak was huge and very tasty. My salad was very good; there was enough for 2 people. We didn't get any pie, but it looked awesome. I would've gotten the coconut cream if I wasn't dieting; the meringue was at least 4" tall! First of all cash only!!!! We stopped into the notorious Koffee Kup restaurant. Growing up it was know as the Koffee Kup Kafe (KKK). So being Hispanic we were told to avoid it because we were not welcomed. So... we decided to stop. Side note I married a white woman so my kids are 1/2 and my step kids are white. First thought is the prices, high for a cafe. Also the sandwiches don't come with fries...??? Fries are extra.... The service is slow, but I think that is standard for Hico. Wife got the nachos- not impressed canned cheese on chips with chicken bits I got the steak sandwich, above average, the homemade bun was very good. Best part of the sandwich. Daughter got beef and vegetable soup. Healthy portion, above average. Oldest son got a hamburger, above average, again homemade bun was the best part. Middle son got a club sandwich, again the fries are extra, so he passed on them. Youngest boy got chicken strips, he was not impressed. So the big finale the pies....they were good. However, not enough to pull the star ranking out of the ditch. So I would pass this place up. read more
