First time I have ever eaten here and it has immediately become my favorite place. My family ordered carry outs and I got the Triple Crown-Chicken with fried rice. I don't like peppers and this dish might have had them in there but I was told it would be no problem for Koi Asian Bistro to remove them if they were in there. When I got my food it was amazing! No peppers, it looked just like it does in the photo on the menu but most important was how good it tasted. Not just good but great food! The amount of food was surprising because there is enough left for another full meal. Thank you for removing the peppers and for your more than generous portions. Visited for the first time on 12/17/13 with friends. We all ordered different items and everything we got was fantastic! What I tried from our order: 1)Tom Kha Soup: definitely does have a bit of spice to it, but very fresh tasting and chock full of fresh veggies. 2) Chicken Satay- yummy! The peanut sauce is great!! 3) Sweet Potato Roll: SO SO GOOD! A nice take on sushi with crunchy rice sticks or something inside. The texture was really good. My favorite item of the night. Would definitely order again. 4) Sashimi Deluxe- contained an assortment including white tuna, red tuna, fluke, salmon, etc. First time trying the actual raw fish...most did not have a fishy taste, so I'd say it's good..but not what we were expecting :) 5) Chicken Lo Mein- really great flavor, not too salty and not greasy looking like some lo meins 6) Kang Dang Curry: my second favorite item of the night. I didn't find it spicy at all, but the flavors were outstanding, you could definitely taste the coconut milk. Would definitely order again. Service was good and the food was great. Very long wait. As a server myself, I thought that the whole place was slow in general. I sat and watched everything for 45 minutes. There were 3 tables just sitting dirty for 10 minutes or more. The bus boys and servers and manager were very slow to clean them up also. There was no sense of urgency in my opinion. Either they are short staffed or run poorly. I wanted to get up and clean the table myself !! I don't think the hostesses had a clue what was going on. They should all have head seats so they can communicate which management and bussers to tell them what tables are open. Very frustrating. Food is always good. Our server was friendly and awesome. But waiting and waiting and waiting and watching tables open and should be ready is definitely a big no no in my book. read more

This place is a must if you like sushi. They do have what I would call regular chinese (cantonese style) cuisine. It is a very intimate atmosphere, low lighting. I think it adds to the experience here. Their food comes with added garnish which makes it that much more special in presentation. I used to live half a mile away from this place (now I live out of state!) and I really miss it. It was delicious. They have really good mango sauce and happy hour deals. The food was really quite good. They provided a no charge serving of edamame as an appetizer. The Spicy Girl signature roll I had was excellent. They had a great bar with frosty cold beer and the service was excellent. The staff couldn't be any friendlier. My sushi came to the table in less than 15 minutes. Have been eating here since it opened. Seems like the food quality has steadily declined. My usual is the mixed seafood w fish, crab meat, mussels, shrimp, and calamari with white rice. Sometimes the mussels that are served haven't opened so they are not edible. Tonight my entree had a mussel shell shattered into pieces. Almost every bite had mussel shell in it that I had to spit out. Sorry but I feel the "chefs" have no pride in their craft or desire to serve their customers quality food. read more

Ok, I mistakenly thought I had previously written a glowing review of Koi. I feel slightly less disappointed now realizing that I had not. Unfortunately, for locals and those passing through the area, I had strongly recommended Koi to anyone who was looking for a good meal based on previous experience. My apologies. So here we go: not too busy, very slow service (drinks took 25 minutes), bartender who is groomed as he must be a Bob Jovi fan, made fantastic drinks. More time running fingers through his hair as he flirted with the ladies than drink mixing. I stand behind this as I noticed the 2nd round took about 2 minutes to arrive and the patrons at the bar had changed. The appetizers were another problem. Seaweed salad was a little too fishy. Beef negamaki was very overcooked. The miso soup appeared instant due to the tiny cubes of reconstituted tofu. In literary terms I would refer to this moment as...foreshadowing. The main courses were 50/50. The tempura has been very good each time I've had it. The spicy basil noodles were quite spicy and good. A choice of meats are available. I like this dish with and ordered it with beef. I got chicken. The waitress offered to have another one prepared as ordered. I already had too much time invested in this one so I declined. The waitress brought mochi with the check as an offering of apology. It was good. If I could I would probably go 2 and a half stars but 3 would definitely be too much so 2 it is. I may stop by again for a drink but aside from that I think I'll hop on 57 and head north the next time I feel like dropping a C - note on dinner. read more

I anxiously awaited the opening of Koi! I went during the first week and have been back 5 times since. Every time I have great service and the food has been phenomenal each time. Aside from the wait, this is a great place. The menu has a good variety of choices between sushi, traditional Chinese and Thai. The portions are good and the prices are good. The service is average, but satisfactory. I usually get Chinese there and what's nice is that you don't feel gross after like I do with other Chinese food in the area. The drink selection is very good. A few Asian beer choices and plenty of selection with wine and Saki. Definitely worth the wait. read more

Okay, we gave Koi another try on a quiet evening, and I'm really happy and willing to give it an excellent review. Here's why. The service was up several notches. They accommodated our large party by giving us the back room, where I've eaten once or twice before. Refills were quick and plenty. The manager came back to check on us. Basically they did everything expected and a little beyond. Maybe it was the quiet evening, or maybe it was the fact that a competitor opened at the mall. I don't know. And if the service is like this next time, I won't care either. The food, as usual, was really, really good. Everything was flavorful and plentiful in portion size. We felt we got our money's worth. In addition to the food being tasty, there is one other thing about Koi that sets it apart: with the occasional exception of Kankakee Country Club, depending on the night and the chef, this is the ONLY restaurant in Kankakee County that I've been to (and I've been to most all of them) that knows how to present food in a pleasing manner. I'd call the presentation on par with Chicago establishments. So if sushi or pan-Asian food is your thing, go to Koi. You will like it; you can get good Asian food without driving an hour. Another business lunch at Koi. People I do business with love to choose this place. I like that they are fast and easy to get a thirty min lunch here. Fast and near my work. I felt compelled to re-write my review here. I still like this place but have grown tired of all the mistakes here. Today we ordered the fried Tofu starter. It took so long the sushi arrived at the same time. It was plated like sushi rather than as depicted in the menu which was far less pleasing. It was also hellfire hot on the interior, startlingly hard crunch on the outside; something that would not have been the case if it was plated properly with the sauce drizzled over the top. One of the rolls we ordered, Boston roll - we chose because it had Masago and this little delicacy is the reason why we chose it. These two Boston rolls were missing the Masago. When I cued the waitress asking if they were out of masago the waitress declared that the Boston roll didnt come with Masago. When we proved to her the menu specified masago as the last ingredient, she just glared at me. So tired of this place being chosen for me. If I had complained to McDonalds that they forgot a main ingredient in a sandwich they would have replaced it. I am tired of the Micky Mouse here...thinking of trying that Kansai place in the mall. read more

I am going to go ahead and give this place 3 stars for now. Me and my wife attended a few days after opening, and though the food was really really good, especially the sushi and sashimi, the service was really slow (they were really busy though). I am sure they will work this out, and it wasn't absurdly long. Today though, I called to make a reservation for 13 people for a couple of weeks out. I don't think this place typically takes reservations, but for a party that large, most restaurants will accept a reservation. I was informed that they expect to be very busy around that time due to the holidays, and so they can't give me a reservation. Isn't that the point of a reservation? I was told to call back a "couple days before and they will see if they can make a reservation". Wait. What? So I am supposed to keep our party of 13 waiting in the wings until 2 days before the date requested, and MAYBE we can get in? What if we can't? It isn't really easy to walk into any restaurant with a party that large and expect to get seated in any reasonable amount of time. Once again, thus why most restaurants allow reservations for large parties. Plus... what are they holding out for? They have a guarantee of 13 paying customers at a set time. Are they holding out that somebody might walk in with a party of 15? A party of 17? Weird business model. Well... we aren't going to wait around hoping they can squeeze 13 paying customers in, guess we will find somewhere else to go. Realizing they are new, I will continue the 3 star rating above, but strike 1 for sure. *EDIT - I did call the restaurant back, and they made the reservation per Tina's comments below. First off, I absolutely LOVE the amount of tofu and veggie options on their menu. There is a lack of vegetarian options at most restaurants in the area so this really stuck out to me and is what prompted me to write this review in the first place. I got tofu lo mein and the portion was huge, enough for 2 more lunches The vegetable gyoza appetizer is amazing with the sauce it is served with. I love this place, my boyfriend and I come here regularly, at least once a week. We love the food. We used to go to Chicago and we all know you pay a lot for quality in the city, we won't do the buffet kind. Reasonably priced and great quality food here. Their leeches martinis are great!!!! My sons and I come here often, and have never had a bad meal or experience. The sushi is always fresh and beautifully presented. I always get the salt and pepper shrimp, it's that good. There are many selections for wines and sakis. They have a really nice chardonnay , nice and oakey, and another fruiter one. My 2.5yr old grandson is usually with us, and our service is quick enough for him to still be in a good mood. The atmosphere is perfect, and the bar is beautiful. I always have had great service and have been dining here since the opening. Never had a problem getting a table from 5-7pm weekdays. You won't be disappointed! read more

This is pretty good for Kankakee. The place in Wilmington is better but this is definitely better than buying your sushi at Costco (not that Kankakee has a Costco). It is far better than Buffett on court street or jewel. read more

Pretty good sushi place since this town only has pub food. The place has a nice set up. Sometimes you'll have to wait for your food since the preparation takes more than a pink meat filled bacon cheddar burger that are served throughout this entire town. If you want something fast you can always drive your impatient ass to a nearby McDonald's. read more
