When it comes to sushi, Kankakee County isn't exactly the market for this sort of thing traditionally--meat, meat, and meat (usually loaded with fat and salt) are the go-to for many, many places in the south (and extreme south) suburbs. Fortunately Koi is one of two restaurants in the area that fill this void, and many have taken to both this and its rival Kansai splendidly, ensuring both are thriving. Koi is the smaller of the two, and on weekend nights is usually overcrowded, with wait times up to 40 minutes. They do not take reservations or call-ahead seating, so if you go during the prime dinner hours of 5 pm to 7:30, expect to wait. Hostesses seem to change often as well, and will oddly leave small tables that parties of two to four could easily sit at empty for extremely long periods of time (on one occasion a table for four was left empty--yet clean--for over half an hour for no discernible reason) and some hostesses do not project their voices at all when calling out for parties to be seated; my cohort and I still get a laugh over one hostess who barely spoke above a whisper to call out for the next seating. The selection of fish is good--they do feature some unusual deluxe rolls such as the Dynamite Roll with Banana tempura and mango sauce drizzled over the top, and the aptly named Chicago Bears Roll (as the town is the summer home of the team): a shrimp tempura and spicy lobster, masago, avocado on top and eel sauce--very big and filling. The real problem with their menu though is that the majority of the list swaps their limited ingredients in and out from roll to roll, which doesn't lend itself to a great wide selection. Mango and avocado is prevalent in many of them (avocado is cheap, tasty, offers unusual soft texture and fills space easily in tiny rolls) and tempura runs wild throughout--perhaps it's the fried food mentality that permeates the area. I worry that the restaurant is falling into a rut, afraid to try new combinations with new ingredients and instead resting on its laurels. The monthly specials often run for consecutive months at a time with no change, and wait service varies from person to person; too often small requests like lemon slices or ponzu sauce are often forgot to be served because they're rarely--if ever--written down on the order. Koi more than adequately brings Asian cuisine to the sticks, but it can be so much more. It just needs to be brave enough to try, even in small steps. read more

My wife and I have eaten there more times than I can count and we have never been disappointed. We even tried their Thai and Chinese food a few times. It was excellent as well. This place is pure class. Decor' is gorgeous. Food was amazing, Plating was beautiful. Grandbaby started acting up a little and a very kind woman (I think she was the owner/manager) she brought him a few lil toys to keep him entertained, then we got to take them home!! This place goes above and beyond. it is very nice to be able to go to a restaurant that is authentic in the type of food they sell and it be fresh, no fillers or 'fake' food. I'd say too nice for Bourbonnais. It's giving people hope that our town is nice when it's really far from it lol. It's really pretty inside but I got general Tso to go and it was almost $13 and it was just chicken covered in sticky sugary sauce. Too sweet it was like candy. Gross. And the serving size was very small. If you charge that much then there should be more food. Go sit down and eat if you wanna dress up And be surrounded by yuppies that think they're better than you and look at you that way. read more

Surprisingly original for a community of our size. Sushi is fresh and tasty service is polite if a bit cold. Menu is good for sushi lovers and those who don't enjoy sushi. I have to say I love the food at this restaurant. This place has made me addicted to sushi. However, with the service being great and helpful. The reason for the 4 is I did bring my infant to this establishment, and their are NO changing tables in the restrooms, and you can't see anything. Mood lighting is for the table not the bathroom. So I had to change my baby on the floor. Not cool. So to Koi please put in changing tables. read more

Had really high expectations...friends and co-workers raved about it. Went for my birthday...atmosphere really nice, but very small and cramped. We ordered an appetizer to share among 3 people...teeny-tiny would describe it. The food was good but nothing to really rave about...can get just as good, if not better, sushi at another nearby Japanese restaurant, and didnt feel like I got my moneys worth. Very pricy for what we ordered...ended up going home disappointed and still hungry. Maybe recommend for some drinks after work and maybe a snack, but if you actually want some food and not break the bank, go elsewhere. read more

Unfortunately Koi missed the mark in all aspects. The complimentary edamame is awesome but it was horrendously over salted with regular table salt instead of sea salt. Their sushi rice was chewy and under seasoned. The fish was bland and tasteless and I still don't understand why the spicy crab roll had tempura bits rolled into it; I felt like I was chewing on sand with each bite. The spicy tuna roll was also bland as was the fish on top of the Snow White roll. I also don't get why many of their rolls contain fruit, they have very odd combinations. I'll have to go else where to get my sushi fix. read more

Upon entering, we were pleasantly surprised at the cozy decor. Very romantic and inviting. Nothing like the strip mall exterior. We had the sushi deluxe dinner and the chicken hibachi dinner. Both were served with ginger salad and miso soup. The soup was flavorful and the salad was fresh with tasty dressing. Both entrees were beautifully presented and delicious. The sushi was mild and expertly prepared. The hibachi portions were large. And all the items were yummy. It was served with white rice, vegetables, noodles, and my choice of chicken in a flavorful sauce. We did not have any adult beverages. Very reasonable cost for a quality meal. We are from Chicago and have been here a couple times with my Mother who lives in the area. This time my wife's hibachi chicken was rather dry (not sure if this was a one-off). Sushi was good. The food is good but the service is bad if you ask for something to be different they refuse. You want something not spicy forget about it! They will down right refuse. I had asked for something not spicy i was told no it is spicy. I asked about it and they said they were sorry (even though they still made it spicy) so i figured I would give them another chance. So I ordered no spice again i even confirmed it when i picked up the food. And they said no spice. I got the food home only to find out that it was made spicy! I am done they have lost me. read more

We were in Kankakee/Bourbonnais for six weeks. This is a food wasteland perfect for the large and limited. If we'd found Koi Asian Bistro sooner we'd have had lunch there every day. Their service is getting better; the decor is outstanding; the food as good as anything we've had in NYC or LA and at prices no worse than downtown Kankakee, Brookstone's, or others in the area. We had a delicious meal of Sashimi & sushi last night. Fast, friendly and respectful service and the food was so fresh and tasty. We had Miso soup, salad with ginger dressing and dessert. It was excellent. The intimate atmosphere and beautiful surroundings encouraged us to stay, relax. And converse. No testers here. Conversation was the norm for everyone.
