If you like meat... this is the place. My companion ordered the premium ayce with waygu and so many decent choices. If you're a bird eater.... There is one option and it's dark meat only. There is No option for vegetarian cook for yourself. No tofu on the ayce menu. You have to order off a separate menu and you have two choices, that are brought to you ready to eat. However, the vegetarian platters are done well. The staff seemed upset that I was doing vegetarian (our server huffed as she walked away) and my companion was a meatatarian but I think since we ordered $20 Sojus (way too expensive in Canada) they left me alone. Service was 10 stars and they are constantly making sure you have enough food. We left full and quite happy. I would say if you want to come here it's more for the teppanyaki experience. It's fun to have your food cooked in front of you. Our chef was very friendly and outgoing. He even had my wife and I come to the other side of the grill and he took a picture of us with IU written in fried rice. I opted for the Wagyu package. I didn't think the meat was very high-quality for what you pay. It was a little bit chewy. However overall, the food did taste good. However, there was nothing there that would make me return other than a fun experience. Kids will have a great time here. read more

Came here last night for dinner. I started off a little confused. Told them I didn't want the teppanyaki as they said they have a regular menu when I called for a reservation. Maybe cause of winter and being a Wednesday things were pretty quiet in there so didn't need a reservation (always better to call in though I find). The confusion came when I got there and was handed take out menus and shown to my table. The Bento boxes on the take out looked nice but was looking forward to other items. When we asked the waitress if there are other things we could order like appetizers or drinks, she got us another menu that had a lot more to choose from. I think it was a small confusion, but no harm done and nothing against the staff. They were so attentive, I think my tea was always topped up and they were very pleasant. But we are here to talk about food. Once reviewing the menu we picked the following dishes: tako wasabi, butter scallops, yaki oysters, crispy chicken cartilage, hot stone Angus beef on rice and a black king Kong roll. Food came out pretty quickly, first came the crispy chicken and the tako wasabi. Tako wasabi had a nice taste and comes with some seaweed. The flavour of the wasabi was good, but I am pretty sure it is premade as the octopus was cold almost frozen. The crispy chicken was easy and not expensive ($5), wasn't expecting much but was quite tasty and had a good fry. Only thing is I wish there was a mayo or some kind of sauce to dip it with. Butter scallops were delicious. Cooked to perfection and the flavour on them was amazing, would buy this again but warning it is a bit pricy (big plate with 6 scallops and some decoration on the plate). Oysters presented well and had a great flavour with their sauce they put on it, another item I would buy again. The Black King Kong roll was very pretty. The taste of all the flavours mixing together was good. It looked good and tasted good. The eel, food gras and Tobiko worked well together. This was also the most eye pleasing dish of the night. Finally we had the spicy Angus beef rice bowl. It's not very spicy but it is delicious. The poached egg was a bit over done so didn't get that gooey yolk to bleed into the rice, but the beef and onions were great. At $13 the value of this dish is definately there and it is a good size dish that I would buy again. Overall the meal was a great night out, no complaints. The place has some nice decoration, it is very clean inside and w'll lit. Staff is very attentive, tea is always full and old plates are cleared very fast. Definately great service here. I think this is a hidden gem. I came on a Tuesday evening since Gyubee was all full, and there were only 2 other tables seated. We were seated immediately. There is a Teppanyaki side or BBQ side inside the restaurant. I chose the BBQ side. We chose the Beef Lover menu ($39 pp) and all I can say is WOW. The quality of meat that was given on the platter and the breakdown of each meats was amazing. The staff really took their time to explain the types of meat and how to proper cook it, and told us the estimated time to cook it too. The Beef Lover menu also comes with an All You Can Eat side. Lots of choices to choose from. Love how consistent the quality, service, and taste was for everything. The staff were really nice and knowledgeable too. I highlyyyy recommend Koke. Comfortable seating, very spacious and clean! It's definitely one of my top BBQ places now. So glad I came here! read more

Pleasantly surprised at how great Koke was! We had a reservation so there was no wait time at all for our table. We came here for AYCE lunch for the beef lovers special. This came with premium cuts of beef (wagyu and short ribs) which were melt in your mouth juicy and did not require much on top besides salt and pepper. It came with sesame sauce and egg sauce (which I both enjoyed) but I used this for dryer pieces of meat like beef tongue. Aside from the meats we had ordered shrimp, clams and onigiri. Nothing mind blowing here but the onigiri came with butter for us to grill. Was thinking it would be a more traditional onigiri but this tasted like a soy sauce sticky rice. Not bad but wouldn't try it again. The service was attentive throughout as we were checked on frequently and had our dishes cleared. There is a two hour seating limit so they came by within the last half hour for "last call" to order any remaining items and dessert. I chose green tea ice cream for dessert which was a nice treat to cool off after all the bbq! Definitely would visit again for bbq when I am in the area. read more

With Taste of Japan being long gone and Memories of Japan going under a couple years ago, there's been a lack of challengers rising to take the teppan mantle in the GTA (specifically in the North York, Richmond Hill or Markham). Enter Koke (which used to be called Kobe Teppanyaki when they first opened). I've been here with my family before and it's always pretty solid even though it doesn't quite match up to the former two places I mentioned at their peak. I made a res on mother's day for my family. We arrived and the waitress came over and told us that they were running a mother's day special which included: salad soup salmon fillet (x2) miso sea bass (x2) cuttlefish black tiger shrimps scallops short ribs angus beef striploin teriyaki chicken beef fried rice sautéed bean sprouts We had the option of upgrading the angus beef striploin to an A5 miyazaki wagyu striploin for an extra $40 (which we did since it was mother's day). The special was listed as $288 for 4 ppl (but w/ the A5 miyazaki it came to $320 for 4 ppl). Overall the food was solid! Our chef was friendly and cooked everything nicely. No show or anything like that (we saw another chef doing tricks at a different table). The short ribs and cuttlefish were VERY tender (I think the cuttlefish was the sleeper hit). I'm used to cuttlefish having a chewy texture LOL so this was a pleasant surprise. It wasn't listed on the menu but we got ice cream to round off the meal. We got black sesame ice cream as the waitress told us it was only seasonally available. It's hard for me to give 5 stars to teppan joints because I've been to places that give LARGE portions in addition to cooking the food well. While the mother's day special DID end up being enough food (I was full and we had some fried rice to take home), if you come here for a regular lunch and you've got a big appetite, this place may not have you leaving with your tummy full depending on what you order so just be mindful. read more

Opted for the Teppanyaki experience at this restaurant near my hotel close by. Turned out to be a disappointment overall. Food from the shrimp, veggies, and rice had absolutely zero flavor. The steak had flavor only due to the garlic that was added to the dish. The two sauces that are provided also had just about zero flavor. "Veggies" consisted of about 98% bean sprouts with a few tiny slivers of carrot, zucchini, and onion mixed in. I probably could've counted the pieces of carrot and zucchini on both hands. It's a good thing. I like beans sprouts. Ice cream for dessert seemed as though it had been allowed to melt and refrozen as it was very icy. This place definitely will not be a repeat choice for me when in Markham. read more

Honestly haven't been to tappenyaki in Markham in so so long. I forgot how much fun and how theatrical it can be. Since everything is cooked infront of you, it's a good speed of service and eating, too! We arrived without a reservation. The host let us know it would probably be 30-45 minutes for a chef to be done and ready to serve. Luckily it went pretty quick and we were able to get seated. The host checked on us many times to ensure we were still ok, and I felt that was very kind and thoughtful of him. We ordered a mix of set b, c and e. Our chef cooked up all the protein first, starting with seafood and moving into chicken and beef. That's followed then by the standard stir fry of mix veggies and fried rice. You can never go wrong with that. If you can order the black cod, do it! It's the ultimate tappenyaki fish and it's just always so buttery and delightful. I seriously can't get enough of it. The thinner slices of salmon over cooked fairly quickly but omg that salmon skin was delish! The chef was really friendly. And so were all the staff serving the additional sides and getting the food out of the kitchen. I would definitely wanna come back sometime maybe with family or a few friends. I went here last night, and it was a fantastic experience. The food was amazing especially the sauces that came with it. I ordered the A & B combos. Definitely the fried rice with the beef and egg matched perfectly with the sauce. The service of this place was amazing and the chef brought a great atmosphere. The waitresses were a bit un-coordinated and lacked a bit of communication but it wasn't that much of a deal. The waitresses also came up and often checked on us. The atmosphere of the place was great with the chef and the different tricks that he did with the eggs and the onion fire ring. This restaurant was absolutely abysmal and unprofessional. My family and I had a reservation scheduled at 7:30, we got seated 20 min later. This was very disappointing because my large extended family of 11 had to wait in a tiny area. As we enter the main area of the restaurant we are ambushed with an abundance of smoke and bad aroma. The entire stench of the restaurant was not up to par. Once we were seated we ordered very quickly because we were so hungry. 30 min later they tell us the are out of oysters. Like how does a restaurant run out of oysters at 8. 30 min later the chef finally coms out and serves then most mediocre teppanyaki ever. This was very upsetting with the bill being extremely high. I've had Teppanyaki a handful of times in the GTA. Usually it's quite typical across the board. Some sort of stir fried veggies, usually with a lot of bean sprouts, garlic beef, teriyaki chicken, fried rice, etc. We tried the Teppanyaki at Koke and it was very much the same. There were a couple highlights, but also a couple of lowlights that unfortunately lowered my score to a 3. For highlights, the place is quite nice inside. I believe one side is for self-serve style grilling. We were on the Teppanyaki side. Service was quick and attentive. Our chef was very friendly as well, exclaiming "fire!" whenever he was about to set something alight so that we were camera ready. The 2-person combo we had also has an angus beef roll with foie gras and eel which was very unique and delicious! Now unfortunately, here are the lowlights. While the majority of the food was pretty tasty, the zucchini in the stir-fry dish was bitter. Or at least 1 of them was, because my husband and I ended up getting bitter veggies. I also found the oyster that came with the meal didn't seem to taste too fresh. Finally, it was very noticeable that the chef was purposely giving bigger portions to my husband than to the rest of us. I mean, yeah sure, he's a big guy so I guess it makes sense. But come on, I have a pretty decent appetite too. Just making assumptions and making uneven distributions didn't leave a great taste in my mouth (who ended up taking some off his plate anyway lol). At least split it evenly at first and then maybe ask who wants extra? Which is usually what I've seen at these sort of places. Do these lowlights deter me from going back? Not really. Overall the experience was fine. However, given that I've never had these sort of issues before at other Teppanyaki places, if given the choice, I might pick one of the other places to visit. read more

Definitely on the pricey side, but we haven't gone out as a family for a while, so a splurge was worth it. Although the food was good and had a good variety of items, it was pretty average. Pretty much the high marks come from the teppanyaki experience - the performance they put up throughout the night. The chef was amazing, the food was cooked the way we liked it, the service was great, and the overall presentation got us wow-ed! Koke Teppanyaki & BBQ located in Markham offers Japanese BBQ (all you can eat or a la carte options) as well as teppanyaki. They also have A5 Wagyu options as well on their menu. They have about 15 tables for Japanese BBQ which you cook yourself and seating for 40 customers for teppanyaki with 4 flat tops in which the chefs cook your set meal/food on. My party of 16 dined at Koke Teppanyaki on a Friday night. We reserved for teppanyaki ahead of time where a deposit had to be made for such a large party. We were seated promptly upon arrival. In regards to the menu, you are welcome to choose different teppanyaki sets as outlined in their menu depending on how many people you'd like to share the set with. They have a good selection of set meals where there are a few which require a minimum of 8 people. With 16 people the choice of which set menu to choose was great, however, it can get confusing for the chefs if everyone is sitting all over the place. It took a while for our orders to be sorted out and by the time the chefs started cooking our food an hour had gone by. In regards to food I opted to partake in the $78 set menu where there needed to be a minimum of 8 people ordering. The set menu came with a wide variety of food. Miso soup, edamame, and salad were included. The set also included chicken, sea bass, grilled veggies, bean sprouts, tempura, steak, etc. as well as dessert. Definitely very filling for the amount of food you get! Our party also ordered some wagyu beef a la carte on top which was delicious. Overall, a good place for teppanyaki and big parties. Don't expect to see an onion volcano but the wagyu cuts of meat definitely were delicious and a great option if you are looking for more higher end cuts of beef. read more

Friendly service. We were here for fancy beef with bbq. Most of the food was wonderful except one of them. The section of the meat came brown. It didnt looked fresh at all, yet we paid the regular price. We also ordered a veggie combo for the Bbq. No seasoning, garlic nor any butter to accent the flavor. We came here for my birthday because I was craving Teppanyaki and I was really hoping this can be our go to Teppanyaki place. Chawamushi was the worst I have ever had, no flavor and a measly spinach and a quarter of an imitation crab. Teppanyaki was okay, the wagyu and steak with garlic chips were tasty, lobster was well seasoned and well cooked but the rest lacked salt and flavor. We had to ask for salt for the fried rice and bean sprout. Miso soup was diluted to the max. Just felt like this place is cutting corners wherever they can. Our experience ended poorly because the server asked us for ice cream flavors when I was still eating my meal and brought them over. After she dropped off the ice cream she asked if we wanted the bill, which I said no and told her we weren't finished. She asked again and looked at the family who just joined the table insinuating they needed our seats. The other guest immediately denied needing our spots. I asked her if she needed our seats she finally admitted yes. This was only 1 hour and 15 minutes into our meal. If you needed us to return the table by a certain time then you should have set that expectations when I made the reso. My husband and I were so excited to catch up for our first date night in months. Was such a horrible feeling to be rushed out so abruptly. read more

First time I've ever come here, my friends told me about it and didnt think to much to come, until tonight with my family. They had 3 different menu options for beef. We opted for the $39 menu as we weren't hungry enough to do $69 option which included more Waygu beef and definitely not the $1xx for the seafood plus wagyu option. The service was friendly, however it did take a while for our meats to come, we wait approx like 10mins or more before it came to our table.. the server did a good job explaining how to cook each meat and depending our how you like your meat; for how long. I love Japanese bbq, so we decided to have dinner here to celebrate my bday :). It was $66 for the wagyu meal (which included select cuts of wagyu beef plus a lamb chop). Then all you can eat of two other beef cuts (a thin sliced one and a leaner flap cut), samgyupgal (thin and thick), chicken thigh, pork neck and beef tongue. They also had veggies and other sides for AYCE. I have to say, the wagyu beef was amazing! Wow, it just melts in your mouth. The lamb chop was pretty good too (and I normally don't like lamb because it's too gamey). Overall, the food was delicious. The reason why Koke only got three stars is because of the service. The male waiter was good but the female waitresses didn't seem to really care. We ordered something three times and it never came. We had to consistently ask them if our order was coming. Finally, our food came after the fourth attempt. I do love the food here but not the service. Maybe its best to go on a weekday instead of a weekend (we went on a Saturday). read more

This place used to be called Kobe, and when I was here last I didn't remember this place being so terrible. The change in 1 letter from Kobe to Koke made the food drop from a 7 to 4 lol. Since reservations are scarce, we called ahead of time and they said they only had a time between 7-8 and that we had to finish our food within the hour. After the hour, they told us they would give us 20 additional minutes, even though the table beside us were there far before us and they never mentioned anything about the time to them. We felt super rushed cooking the meat and eating it too, super unpleasant. They put up posters advertising their "certificate" of Japanese Wagyu so we had to try it. We ordered the "deluxe" set, which came with wagyu and an assortment of other meats. The set also allowed you to order a few other cheaper meat and veggie items "all-you-can-eat" style, but they were all very sub par. Only a few tiny pieces on the platter (far in the back) were maybe wagyu but definitely NOT A5 or even A4. For $60 per person ($120 for 2) to share a set, with one dipping sauce etc. It was a complete rip off. The other meats were not great and quite frankly I wish I went to J-Town and grabbed real wagyu and had BBQ at home instead. Would not recommend and would never be returning. read more

The decoration and venue was very nice. It was a little hard to find even with the Waze on, as we kept thinking it was in the dim sum place plaza but in fact it is in the same plaza as Initium. There are two sides to the restaurant. One side with the self cook bbq, the other side is Teppanyaki. I asked the hostess which one is more popular and the response was the Teppanyaki side. The individual set menu, you can order, seafood, steak with shrimp, or chicken. However the chef was kind enough to ask if we wanted to share everything. The calamari was thin and nice. The steak was not bad. I find the food a little on the salty side. The Mel came with miso soup and ice cream, with interesting flavour such as ginger ice cream. Our chef was super interactive, he will let me hold the cooking utensils to try to cook and take photos. And use the egg and let us try to catch it with our mouth. King made the whole experience fun and interactive. No alcohol served yet. Anyways interesting experience! read more

Usually come here to eat with my hubby since his shop is located in the same plaza only a few doors down. The service is good. The waiters are attentive and there is always a waiter waiting to clean any mess on the table to ensure there is enough space for your food. We came with our little son whose 2yrs old. He can eat the food and always wants the wagyu meat with rice. Pros: Good service Food quality is consistent I like the set package of $128 which is meant for 2 people but for my husband and I feel we were extremely full. The staff are very friendly and willing to provide you with any assistance you may need when it comes to ordering. We made reservations so we may be able to sit at a table in the back and had our amazing chef Samuel make our meal. He was so friendly and really amazed my son with his cooking skills and tricks. The food was delicious and definitely enough for all 5 of us who attended dinner. The restaurant was clean, easy to find and with plenty of parking. First time trying Kobe, no need for reservation. Spacious and not many people. Staff was wonderful as they were patient and demonstrated how the meat should be cooked. They took time to explain the different meat. We had 7 people and there were booth enough to sit 8 c with 2 bbq. We ordered 3 dinner set for two. $68x2 and $58x1, and we order extra plate of thick tougne. Meat quality was excellent . read more
