Yesterday afternoon I went to visit Koko Chicken in Garden Grove. It wasn't very busy. There was probably one other table seated and some people coming in and out for takeout orders. The server was very friendly, very attentive, and great about taking my order. They only make the chicken fresh here; it's all made to order. They dropped off some pickled daikon and some coleslaw-like cabbage dish and then I waited for about 15-20 minutes before the chicken came out fresh. I got a two-piece crispy fried chicken with fries and steamed rice. He also brought out ketchup and the sweet soy on the side for me. The chicken was so juicy and crispy on the outside; it was amazing, definitely one of the best fried chicken experiences in Orange County. If you need a quick lunch this might not be the spot but it's a great place to have phenomenal fried chicken. I have been back twice this month. I've seen some new posters on the wall stating "new oil every 50 piece chicken", man if this is true, I'll be here more often. The chicken taste a lot better. They spread it out on a flat plate which is good because the old bowel type plates trap heat and moisture when the chicken is piled on top of each other causing excess steam and making the chicken soggy. One of my favorite spots for KFC! My favorites are the pepper soy wings and the rose tteokbokki. Everything else is also very delicious. This place is especially one of my favorite spots for rose tteokbokki. It's savory and creamy with bits of garlic, bacon and sausage mixed in. The fries are so addicting and sometimes their salad dressing is a little spicy but still so good . The service is button oriented so if you need them just press the button on the table and they will come shortly or head right to you. But no matter what it is consistently good and always hits the spot. And they open late. Their menu is pretty basic. I always get their original or their pepper soy flavored wings. They have other flavors too but those are my favorite. I'm also okay on their appetizers. I'm really just there for the wings. I do enjoy their supreme fries which are made with beer battered tornado fries smothered in goodness. The fries are always cooked perfectly. The rest of their appetizers, such as their seafood pancake and calamari are whatever. I'm telling you the wings and the cabbage salad they give to you in the beginning is all you need. Service is always on point. I like that they have a little bucket for trash for you at the table. I also like that there are napkins at the table so you don't need to ask. But they do check up on you and make sure you have all you need. Pricing is also pretty affordable. The inside is super casual. They have plenty of TVs for those of you that want to watch the game. 5/5 stars for the fried chicken alone. They have signs all over stating, no frozen chicken, they mean it. The chicken was a perfect blend of crispy outside and juicy inside. It was sooo good and served super hot, even thought we did a pick up order. I'm a hard critic of onion rings. If I bit into a ring and the whole slice comes out, leaving nothing but empty breading, my whole day is ruined. Not these onion rings. They were perfectly battered, fried, and had an amazing crunch. Each bite had a perfect amount of onion. We ordered and were served our food in under 20 minutes which makes it a great late night craving spot. Inside, they have a Korean pub like setup with about 8-10 tables for seating. For their menu, they have a nice selection of different KFC, dukpokki, soup, and more. So when we just finished a very long day at Disney California Adventure, we were happy to know this Korean Chicken food spot was one of the few late night food options still open close by our hotel. I called in for a takeout order. The food was going to be ready for pickup in 20 minutes which was efficient for Korean fried chicken. The restaurant is located in a nice Asian plaza in Garden Grove, CA. There is plenty of parking in the large parking lot. The plaza area looked pretty busy for a Friday night as there were other great establishments in the plaza. When we arrived, most of the tables were occupied as it looked packed for a typical late night Friday pub. It was loud and lively in there. The staff was friendly and quick. We ordered 24 soy wings along with 2 orders of rice, and shrimp fried rice. To our great surprise, the order also came with a complimentary side order of daikon. The soy wings were so delicious and flavorful. They remind me of Bon Chon soy garlic drumsticks. Overall we enjoyed our experience at Koko Chicken and BBQ. This used to be one of my favorite spots, so it honestly makes me sad to write this. They've made a few changes to the menu and pricing. The dukbokki can only have ramen when it's a large. On top of that, cheese is now $4 extra and ramen is $3, which feels a bit steep for add-ons. They also changed the salad sauce--it used to be more on the sweeter side, but now it leans spicier (around a 3/10 spice level, still good), which may or may not be your preference. The biggest issue, though, was the food safety concern. Our order included 8 pieces of fried chicken (4 drumsticks and 4 wings). The drumsticks were fully cooked and fine. However, the first wing piece I bit into was clearly undercooked. Because of that, we did not continue eating the remaining wings--the other three were set aside and later on, discarded into the small trash bin they keep at the table. When I brought it to the staff's attention, they told me the redness was from bone marrow due to a broken bone and that the chicken was fully cooked. However, the bone only broke because I bit into it, and the meat itself was visibly pink. Not just near the bone where bone marrow would be. The actual MEAT was red and pink all throughout. This was not just "marrow." Even zooming into the picture, you can see the meat on both the plate and in my hand was still red and pink. Additionally, the remaining wings were only visually checked by the waiter and were not opened or inspected internally, which would not confirm whether they were fully cooked. This is concerning, as a visual check alone doesn't accurately assess doneness. It also concerns me that, despite not being present, the owner claims his servers point of view as factual, including the claim that all the wings were eaten, which is not accurate. We did not consume the remaining wings after the first one I bit into. Unfortunately, there was no apology from my perspective, simply an "explanation" stating it was bone marrow. And the situation wasn't handled with much concern. I ended up feeling sick and had to go to the bathroom to throw up, which completely ruined the rest of the experience. Overall, I'm really disappointed. Between the price changes, the food safety issue, and the owner's response focusing more on defending the situation rather than acknowledging the concern, I don't feel comfortable coming back. read more
