You can get a very satisfying bowl of ramen along Broadhollow Rd in Farmingdale. Kokyou is in a small strip mall that is behind a Speedway gas station that you can easily miss. If you drive north on Rt 110, there is a small driveway next to Speedway , but if you're traveling south, make a left on Smith St into the Five Guys parking lot. We often come by this way on a Sunday morning and I realized why we hadn't tried Kokyou before and it's because they don't open until 2pm on Sundays, but on this Saturday, we came in just in time for lunch. The interior is very bright, neat and clean and we're seated in a middle table. Bamboo chopsticks are set on the table and they seem more elegant without the disposable paper wrapper. The picture menu gets your appetite going. I was looking for Ika Geso, but they don't have it on the menu, so we settled for Chicken Karaage, which was pretty good. The fried chicken chunks came out hot & crunchy and dusted with spicy shichimi. Soon, our deep bowls of ramen arrived. My BIL's Seafood Ramen had plenty of shrimp, scallops & a couple of mussels on the half shell in a dark soy chicken broth. My wife's Kalbi Ramen had chunks of beef short rib in a spicy pork & beef broth. My Gyuniku Ramen had slices of braised beef shank in a rich beef broth with plenty of baby bok choy. All bowls had a half soft boiled egg and corn niblets. I drained my bowl down to the bottom. I really want to come back to try the Donburi and I know I want the Curry Chicken Katsu over rice the next time we're out this way. read more

This is a great little spot, especially if you're near Adventureland and Farmingdale university! The inside has charming Japanese-style décor that gives it a cozy, authentic feel without being over the top. We went before the dinner rush and were seated right away. They also offer bubble tea and a nice selection of beers, which is a fun bonus. We started with edamame and shrimp shumai to share, both simple and tasty. I had the seafood ramen, which was packed with flavor and loaded with shrimp, scallops, and clams--comforting and delicious, especially on a cold night. My husband had the shrimp donburi and really loved the grilled shrimp, which were cooked and seasoned perfectly. We got delivery from here last night and it was amazing! My sister, her fiancé, my husband, and I (finally) decided on ramen for dinner. We were about to order from Oh! Ramen, but I remembered this place tucked away on 110 near Costco that I've passed 100 times and suggested it. When everyone saw the menu and their more unique offerings, we immediately pivoted and ordered from here. My husband picked the vegan curry tofu ramen, my future brother-in-law picked the spicy wonton ramen, and my sister picked the wild pepper ramen. Everyone loved theirs! I sampled the curry broth and it was delicious. I had dental work last week so I've been cautious of what I can eat so I picked just the miso broth with noodles and added a side of egg and a side of the beef shank. The beef shank was able to be cut with a plastic spoon with how tender and delicious it was. The eggs were perfectly gooey in the middle, and the broth was exceptional. We all agreed we wished there was a bit more broth in their bowls but that's our only complaint. I need to come back here to eat in the restaurant next time! read more

My friend and I met up for an early dinner. The restaurant is very clean and the staff is super friendly. The restaurant is very welcoming. There is a parking lot and I'm not so sure how packed it can get during the week as we went on a Sunday. The menu is simple: starters, ramen, donburi, beverages. Even though I wanted to try their ramen, my friend and I ordered donburi. My friend ordered the curry chicken katsu donburi and I ordered the beef donburi. We asked for the curry on the side and that was delicious! The food was very filling. We couldn't finish it and had to take the leftovers home. My friend bought a passionfruit jasmine fruit tea to take home. She told me that was delicious and wasn't too sweet. I was impressed that the food wasn't salty at all. However, I will say that the beef donburi was on the sweeter side. It reminded me of Yoshinoya (if you know, you know). All it was missing was a side of ginger! I really struggled to like my ramen here. The broth was very watery, lacked the depth of flavor, and frankly was not salty... which is odd for a miso base. The fixins also were mostly slightly undercooked. The woodear mushrooms were slightly bitter. The corn was too crunchy. Pork was tender. Bamboo shoots were cooked well. The service was reasonable though, boba was tasty, and the staff brought chili oil yo customize the flavors. I guess its a good place for a low sodium ramen but it didnt taste like any of the ingredients had any flavor permeated into them. They all seemed plainly boiled and unseasoned. Ive seen this place when I came here once for 5 guys. Theres a parking lot but its shared with a dollar tree and a few other stores so it's alwaya packed. The inside is very nice and they had soothing sounds playing, good atmosphere tp relax and dine. My waitress was very nice and I was seated quickly. I started with a veggie gyoza pan fried which was very good! Very flavorful. Then next came my miso soup that I asked for spicy. The broth tasted a bit off, I cant put my finger on it exactly but it smelled and tasted very fishy like. Extremely happy I was able to find a local place that has chicken katsu curry! The price was fair and the restaurant seemed like a mix of a carry out and eat in spot. So either or is welcomed. Service was quick and prices were standard for this type of meal. Only complaint I have is that they could have given a lot more curry. This has been my go-to spot for an after work dinner for a few months now, ever since I started working in the Farmingdale area. What you see is that you're getting: a nice, quaint, little ramen shop. Good food, good atmosphere, good service. Nothing much to complain about, it's just a nice little spot for a good, warm meal. Came in today for soup. I ordered Tonkatsu and it was good, not the best in LI and considering I spent 3 weeks in Japan this summer on vacation. I would had come back since this place is not far from my job. However, after experiencing the not so welcome greeting and the serious attitude towards me, no I'm not coming back. I noticed how the host/waitress was friendly with others, including a gentlemen who came after me, who was also dining alone except me. I know people can have a bad day but when the bad day is only reflected towards me. That's an issue with me. This was my experience, hope nobody experience the same. This place is so underrated and I'm kicking myself for not coming here sooner. There are so many ramen shops popping up, but this one stands out not just for how delicious the food is but the options. They have a great rice bowl section and a ramen section, so there's something for everyone. One thing I have to point out is how unique the ramen selection is here! They have a kalbi and a bulgogi ramen option which I was blown away by. Haven't seen options like that else where and their menu was definitely unique. I went with the kalbi spicy ramen and it was awesome! So much so that i can't wait to come back. Portions are a great size, the broth on the tonkotsu and kalbi were delicious. I wish it was a little bit of a richer broth but it was still so good, so flavorful, and I can't wait to come back and try everything else they have to offer. I called in my order and received great service both over the phone and when I went to pick it up. The inside is definitely Instagram story worthy with a very modern/minimal ambiance. I got the tonkotsu ramen (gotta keep it causal on the first try lol) and the pork buns. Both were delicious, but the broth could have been a bit tastier. I had to spruce it up when I got home lol. I see comments saying that their ramen is not like the ones in the boroughs and....it's not lol. But I feel like you ~can't~ have that expectation with ramen on Long Island unfortunately. I'm trying to wrap my brain around what people are raving about with this place. Maybe they've never had good ramen before, maybe they think it's supposed to resemble the "ramen" you find in those supermarket plastic packages, I don't know. All I know is this is some of the most disappointing food I've ever tried. Line by line: -Takoyaki...bland and mushy -pork buns...mostly bun, and lousy bun at that, no flavor. Small piece of rubbery pork slathered in some sort of mayo. Sad attempt at what's usually one of my favorite things -tonkatsu ramen...guys, this ain't ramen. not good ramen anyway - the noodles were almost identical to the supermarket crap, the broth was way off flavor wise and the eggs had a funk to them. Also, who the hell puts raw onion in soup? not caramelized, not even sweated, just straight raw white onion with all the burn you'd expect if you were to bite into one. idk maybe the college kids across the way are into this stuff, i remember thinking domino's was solid after late nights at the bars back then but if you've had legit ramen you're not going to leave this place satisfied. Kokyou Ramen is delicious! I was introduced to this place by my neighbor and have been there 3x since. Kokyou Ramen is located in the same parking lot as dollar tree right off 110. My neighbor ordered the Miso ramen and I get the Kalbi ramen (I love the kick!). I think the portion size, presentation and restaurant ambiance is lovely. The service here as well is great! Though, I would reccomend less sugar next time. The coconut flavor was pretty strong in my opinion. Appetizer was pretty filling, so I would reccomend ordering only if you're super hungry or with a friend. For the entreé I had Tori Paiten Ramen, their newest menu item. The soft-boiled egg was kinda cold, but did not bother me much. It came with corn, scallion, 4-6 pieces of thin-sliced chicken seasoned with pepper, half of a soft-boiled egg, salty chicken broth, and noodles. I reccomend having a glass of water with this one since it was really salty. -Service Great service, waitress came to check up on us a few times and refilled our water too. This place is the best! The food is delicious. The miso ramen was outstanding with every element a dish needs. I recommend 2 chicken buns as well. The food we got was good but it certainly wasn't the flavor profile I was expecting when I wanted ramen. We tried the tonkatsu and the miso which had somewhat muted flavors and the braised beef which tasted like a bowl from a Chinese hand pulled noodles shop. So I'll say this much, the service, location, and decor are all all great. They do a good job with that. The ramen is another story altogether. I had the tonkotsu, which is my customary order at most ramen spots. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't particularly good. The chashu was fairly minimal, almost no flavor other than char, just no marinade to speak of. The ajitama was okay, would have preferred a full egg, but for the price and location, I get it. The noodles, standard Sun noodles I can pick up at the store, not offensive, just not good. On to the broth, with tonkotsu I'm expecting a very pork forward broth, and I just did not get that. Not sure what they're using as a base, it's just not a hearty, thick, stick to your lips, broth. It was almost a little watery. It was edible, just nothing to write home about. My first time here. I got the Tonkatsu Ramen. It was totally satisfying. I've had better roast pork slices. They were almost flavorless. Could be an off day. The soup and ramen noodles were very good. Tons of scallions so that is a huge plus. My companion got the seafood ramen. He enjoyed that a lot. They charge for tea. Come in a cup with a tea bag. That's kind of a minus. Service is good so at least they were attentive in coming with the hot water to refill the tea cup. read more
