My friend and I had brunch here on a frigid New York morning. It feels like you step back in time walking in, the decor feels very European, like cafes you see in the movies set in Vienna or Paris. The menu is really interesting with modern lot of takes on classic items. The service was mostly excellent. As soon as we sat down, they fixed the wobbly table. Our server was also very knowledgeable about the menu and gave us some great recommendations. When our server came over to us, he asked what kind of water we wanted and I ordered a coffee that never came, so I had to order it again after my friend got her tea. We ordered the duck parfait to start, the Ei im Glas, the Räucherlachs, and the duck egg crème brûlée. The duck parfait was incredible. If you go and order one thing, it should be that. It was so smooth and rich. The Ei im Glas is like a deconstructed eggs benedict served in a glass. it's really different. I liked the poached egg but there's a lot of hollandaise sauce. It was hard to get a bite with the perfect ratio, but if you did, it was really nice. The Räucherlachs is a smoked salmon dish served with fromage blanc (it tasted more like butter to me), the biggest capers I have ever seen, and onion alongside a bagel. The salmon was excellent, I could have done without the fromage blanc - it was nice, but didn't add a whole lot and the salmon was creamy enough on its own. The duck egg creme brulee really hit. It was so light and creamy, and I loved the hint of acid from the pineapple on top. I'd also note that the restaurant is adjacent to the hotel so you have to go into the lobby of the hotel to use the restrooms which were not great because several stalls downstairs and at least one of the single stall ones upstairs did not have toilet paper. The hotel lobby is also extremely dark. Overall, the appetizer and desserts were excellent, and the mains we ordered were good, but not amazing. read more

Dropped by during Martini Hour for a drink and small bites. Take note, between 4-6PM, only the Martini Hour specials are available. Drink offerings: two different martinis, one cocktail, a red wine, a white wine, a mulled wine, and a beer. Snack offerings: gougeres (cheese bread), oysters, beef tartare. We got an espresso martini and glass of white wine to wash the gougeres and oysters down. Definitely order the gougeres - imagine a mix between pao de quejo and a popover. The oysters (half dozen) were flavorful - the citrus vinaigrette topping was pleasant. The bar area, where the Martini Hour is offered, was beautiful and well decorated. We're currently obsessed with Koloman. Our favorite dish is easily the Salmon en Croûte. It's incredible and so unique. Everything at Koloman has been so delicious - and we also enjoy the beets and the desserts (especially the Viennese Apple Strudel). Food 9/10 I really enjoyed my experience here! Quite pricey, but everything was really solid. Bread was $3 per person though... which I had not known until afterward, but it was fire bread so I guess I was more forgiving because it tasted great. Definitely get the salmon en croute, cheese souffle, and duck. I want to try the tenderloin next time. Do not get the almond layer cake thing, it was deathly sweet. Atmosphere 9/10 Great vibes. Fine dining at its best with modern takes on classic dishes. From snapper crudo, celery root tartare and roast beet linzer to the entrees of beef tenderloin, salmon en croute, and seared fluke along with pearl barley risotto, followed by the chocolate cake with pistachio ice cream for dessert we were wowed by the presentation, flavors and perfectly prepared combination of ingredients. Service is excellent: unobtrusive, attentive and very accommodating with tastes of wine and explaining the food when asked. The atmosphere is lively, and the setting is bistro-like with no table cloths and wooden chairs. We were asked to wait as they needed to get things together, so we stepped over to the bar to wait. However, after 15 min and watching others seated, we asked about being seated. It was then we were told that they don't seat until the whole party arrives. Really wish they had mentioned that first! After letting them know we could order immediately upon being seated and that we were in a rush to catch a show in a few hours, we were seated. There was a bit of a wait until someone came over to give us menus and water. We also asked to place our orders as we were in a hurry. Orders placed, we sat and waited. We thought the croissant & carrot bread might arrive first, but it did not. It came after we inquired about it. Then we reminded them we were in a rush and that everything should just come out as it was ready. About an hour after our reservation time, our food arrived. For a birthday celebration, we received some recommendations to check out this Austrian French place and we are glad we did! We were definitely trying to avoid ordering too much bread/carbs to start because we wanted to try so many other dishes, but we could not resist. We ordered the Duck Liver Parfait with came with buttery, thick toast, the Gougeres, and the Cheese Soufflé. All three types of carbs and it was on the heavy side, but OH SO GOOD. We basically slapped the duck liver onto all the types of bread. The duck liver was heavy, but so creamy, and so flavorful. The Cheese Soufflé was buttery soft, and aged cheddar provided a really rich taste. Next, we ordered the Agnolotti, which had an amazing broth. I could drink this all day, and the pasta was stuffed with nicely and a good amount of filling. We were glad we got this dish. For the mains, we ordered the duck liver, and the sauce was really citrus-y and the duck was tender. The Viennese Apple Strudel was really good as a dessert! Damn cool spot My friend made a Resy outside the hours listed on Google Maps, so I thought there was some kind of error but I think that's just how cool this place is I was transported to a chill speakeasy with beautiful bar decor and high ceilings. It's more spacious inside than it appears to be, and the staff was so accommodating. The "Ei Im Glas" is the most inventive presentation-wise breakfast I've had in a long time. Two poached eggs sit under a creamy mix with an "everything bagel" mix that counters the heaviness of the dish perfectly. Also had a pain au chocolate that was warm and delicious as well! 4 1/2 for food, 2 1/2 for service. I typically would dive right into the food when it comes to a review where the food is good (and it is indeed mostly excellent at Koloman), but the service was so problematic I feel compelled to mention it first in the hopes that management will work to fix it. If I could give it a 3 1/2 I would, but I will round up to 4 for what it could be. We were seated upstairs, which I think one should avoid if at all possible. They have I believe 9 or 10 tables up there and one front waiter who seems to be the only one they allow to speak with customers for ordering of any kind. There were 4 or 5 other people around, sometimes just standing there chatting, while half of the tables still had their menus on the table; they were seemingly waiting for just the one waiter to actually order anything. After a long initial wait for the menu (which she also brought - not sure why someone else couldn't do that), no one came to take a separate drinks order. We were just sitting there 20 minutes after arriving as she was busy at other tables. Once we ordered, it was RUSH TO GET THEM OUT time. Our appetizers came in a flash, before our drinks. We pointed out that our drinks hadn't even arrived yet so they shouldn't be serving us all the food, and then once they did arrive (in the middle of our appetizers, which we ate slowly to try to wait for our drinks), half of mine was spilled on the way up by the waiter (I could see it pooled under the drink). Frankly, at $23 a cocktail, that's not ok. We asked to order a second drink when they cleared our appetizers and pointed out the timing on the first. Could it even arrive in time? We were assured it would. But again, the back waiter could not take our drink order. We had to wait for the waitress. When she finally made it over to us, she assured us it would be ok so we ordered. Our main dishes arrived immediately after. We never saw her again until it was time to order dessert. We pointed out that indeed the drink never did arrive. She was apologetic and said they were out of some basic ingredient that no bar would ever be out of, but I suspect she just got flustered and never put it in. She did bring us an extra dessert, but frankly, it did not make up for overall seriously subpar service. So, service. Not good. Please fix it, management, so we can recommend your restaurant. Now that I have that out of my system, on to the food. The gougeres were superb. If you can get my 10 year old to eat horseradish cream, you must be a wizard. She loved it. The celery root tartare was so complex, it was truly a highlight. A bit more cracker with it would have been welcome but the vibrancy of the sauce on what is typically a humble root veggie was incredible. The duck parfait was very good, though it lacked two things: I wanted a sour/sweet fruit element to temper the richness and a better bread option. A thick buttery brioche just cascaded the richness, and it was not sufficient in surface area to actually scoop up all of the parfait. I love brioche but would have preferred something lighter and more abundant to help enjoy the parfait. Had it had a fruit element, I could have happily had it by the spoonful, but with just the duck, it would have been odd. The beef tenderloin was absolutely incredible. Melt in your mouth tender and probably the most flavorful tenderloin I've ever had. The cheese souffle was also very good. The schnitzel was a bit of a disappointment, but our daughter enjoyed it. Desserts were forgettable. The only one that we really found remarkable was the creme brulee. The strudel was fine but ungenerous, the Esterhaźy Torte was bland. Overall, service really tanked it. They need to fix it. They should have brought us a glass of champagne or an after dinner drink with our desserts to make up for it (it was my husband's birthday, which they were aware of). It was an expensive meal at $300 before tip for 3 people and we expected a better experience. Pace the meal better. Use the bar upstairs so that drinks arrive promptly and intact if you are going to have 10 tables upstairs. Allow back waiters to help with the front of house service. They can absolutely handle it. Koloman could be great. I hope they will fix what needs to be fixed so that it can get there. read more

Today was our first time visiting this restaurant and let me just say, we will be back! The food was absolutely amazing. We ordered oysters, carrot bread, Duck Liver Parfait, trout tartare, eggs benedict, avocado with pesto toast and a cheeseburger. For dessert, we ordered the duck egg creme brulee and the Apple Strudel. Every single item was delicious, but if I had to choose a few items to eat again, I would definitely order the duck liver parfait, trout tartare, the avocado with pesto and the duck egg creme brulee. CHEF'S KISS!! The atmosphere is definitely comfortable. Most places that have this type of quality food, are a bit stuffy. We did not feel rushed (even though it is a holiday) or uncomfortable! We went there for brunch once and got Ei im Glas and Kernöl. They were both very tasty, but the portion of Ei im Glas was so small that left my partner very hungry. Because of the overall positive experience from the service and restaurant vibe, we decided to go back for their dinner menu. For dinner, we (2 people) ordered Roasted Beets "Linzer" (as an appetizer), Cheese Soufflé & Agnolotti (as main) to share, and Souffle (for two) for dessert. The server seems a bit pushy about the amount that we were ordering, which he thought too little, but with the food & price correlation, we thought that should be enough. But no. Even though food tasted good, the portions were so little that made the overall experience not worth it. The only reasonable dish across portion & taste & price is the dessert soufflé. I've never experienced such negative experience when it comes to portion vs. price (no Michelin places we've been to are like this), which is why I gave a three-star. Restaurants cost so much these days, it's always a struggle to decide if we should go with one of our five "tried and true" spots, or take a risk and try somewhere new. I've never had a particular hankering for Austrian food, but Pete Wells and his glowing three star review inspired me to give Koloman a shot. Service was friendly at the door. We waited briefly at the bar with a glass of wine and watched the very well heeled set taking pictures of that fabulous transparent clock. Then it was upstairs to our perch overlooking the action down below. Our server was earnest and attentive. The wine list is a thing of beauty. Too bad our gougeres arrived before the wine - total amateur hour. That being said, there was no denying their utter deliciousness. Break open a steamy gougere, slather soft horseradish butter on its molten interior, wash it down with a mouthful of Gigondas, witness the incredible synergy - I think the angels began to sing. Then it was back down to earth again when the celery root tartare, which was clearly ordered as a mid course, came out at the same time as our beef and schnitzel. It was a total waste of a course. The schnitzel, in its soggy crust, underwhelmed me, though I welcomed the taste of veal, all too rare these days. Neither of the sauces did much to redeem the dish, although the cucumbers were divine. The beef in its marrow "crust" good, but everything on the plate was soft, soft, soft - there was no textual contrast to make the dish interesting. Dessert was another wasted course. Our server recommended a molten chocolate cake circa 1992, with a side of very salty ice cream - was that supposed to make it modern? We don't usually order dessert, and I was disappointed by this one. Service was rushed at the end, as five different servers hurried to close the deal. Total buyer's remorse this morning. We landed in NYC in the wee hours and needed a bite. Discovered Koloman on Eater's many lists. We had: 1) Freshly baked croissant - puffy, flaky, messy. 5/5 2) Kernol - Styrian style soft scrambled eggs. The distinctive element being the pumpkin seeds and oil. 4/5 3) Ei im Glas - which is German for Eggs in a Glass. Absolutely delicious! Served in a champagne stem glass, two soft boiled eggs are served in hollandaise sauce (with some white wine), Everything Bagel seasoning along with slices of toasted brioche. After a very long time, I finally found an innovative egg dish. One that drives me to research more about the dish. I give it a 7/5 4) Bratwurst - Deliciously flavored. Just amazing - hard to find a French restaurant with so many vegetarian options! We had reservations pretty soon right after they opened at 5:15 pm for 2. Seems tough to do walk in as they are pretty booked up Wait staff are attentive (a tad overly so) but it definitely makes the dining experience feel like you're taken care of We started with the gougeres which were wonderful savory pastries. Crispy exteriors that were perfectly airy and fluffy on the inside. The accompanying dip had horseradish that worked incredibly and surprisingly well with the pastry. The beet salad was good! Out of the dishes we ordered, I would prioritize the others - but it was nice to have one lighter course. The cheese soufflé and mushroom jam were also amazing - the soufflé was light and airy, and the mushroom jam was a nice umami accompaniment. My entree was the agnolotti and this was my favorite dish of the Evening. The filled pasta was perfectly balanced with the saltiness of the broth and flavor of the morels. I will be thinking about this dish for quite some time On a random note, the bathrooms are located in the ace hotel which was a bit of a pain to get to. Overall highly recommend! read more

Our server was kind and the food was fine. My partner and I are disappointed that we specifically reserved the a la carte menu and were only told after being seated by the manager that our only option was the prix fixe menu. No apologies, no remorse, no offer for us to leave without being charged a cancelation fee. The only alternative option we were given was to sit at the bar and have the bar bites. We understand if the menu needs to change last minute but you have to notify your customers and give the option to cancel the reservation free of charge. It being Valentine's Day, we knew there were no other dining options available last minute. The food was fine but not worth $185 given alcohol was not included. We missed out on our favorite dishes like the schnitzel which we were both excited for. We tried to make the most of the dinner and asked during the appetizer course to order a bottle of wine to go with our mains and asked to speak to the sommelier to help navigate the extensive wine menu. We waited for over 30 minutes for the sommelier to come to our table and by the time they came, we were already halfway through our mains. Overall, extremely disappointed in our experience and the lack of communication and compassion. -- This was originally posted as a private note to the restaurant. The restaurant responded: "Prior to Valentine's Day, we reached out to all reservations confirming our prix-fixe menu and offering the option to confirm or cancel." I really liked Koloman. I didn't love it. I think the problem was that I didn't order the things I wanted. I dined with a friend, and so we skewed toward dishes that were vegetable focused. The bread service was nice. I'm a big bread person and I could've eaten the whole basket by myself. The butter was a little too salty for my liking though. We also ordered the celery root tartare [$21] and the roasted beets linzer [$21]. Both were tasty but I don't think they are things I would have ordered again. I wasn't blown away. The duck liver parfait [$23] though was legendary. It was so smooth and creamy, so unctuous. Don't even get me started on the brioche bread. It was slightly sweet and pillowy. Get this 100%. I had the Schnitzel "Viennoise" [$38], it was good. I enjoyed the two side sauces, lingonberry and sea buckthorn. There's also a side of potato salad. This dish really speaks to my Eastern European heritage. My friend had the salmon en croute [$51]. She enjoyed it. I tasted a piece of it, and I can confirm the pastry dough was incredibly buttery and flakey. The salmon was also cooked to perfection. Lastly, we shared the Apple Strudel [$15]. It was nice but I don't know that I would order it again. You can't go terribly wrong with what is essentially apple pie and ice cream. I ordered the the Edelweiss [$18] cocktail which was great, it makes me want to sing Edelweiss from The Sound of Music. I enjoyed how tart it was and the color of the drink was beautiful. It was a well crafted cocktail. I thought Koloman was going to be more expensive than it was. We paid $238 after tax, before tip. I would come back and order the cheese soufflé. This is a late review. Was so eager to find an opportunity to come here. The restaurant was located inside a hotel, modern yet classy. However, some of the dishes were too salty that just didn't really do it for me. The highlight of the night was duck liver parfait, salmon en croute & palatschinken. The duck liver mousse itself was so balanced, along with the freshly baked brioche; it was heaven! But they charged us extra for asking for another piece of brioche. It was my first time having salmon en croute. Think as a high-end salmon sandwich lol. The crispy buttery bread complimented the super tender salmon well, which made the dish fun to eat. It was packed on a weekend evening when we came by to eat, and we were fortunate enough to get a table. It was cold out and they kept the door open, so we were right in the line of the cold air, but if that weren't an issue, it would have been fine. Our server was lovely and attentive, and all the food was incredible. The bread was top notch, and for my main I had the Doppio Pasta à la Bouillabaisse, which was basically these delicate, rabbit dumplings in a broth. It was absolutely unbelievable!! And unfortunately, they only serve the lunch menu on the weekday so hopefully I can schedule it around work one day! I've tried all of the following: Gougeres bergkäse, red wine shallots $15 My absolute favorite is the Gougeres. One of the best gougeres I've tasted in my life! I ALWAYS get the gougeres and WILL always get them in the future. I'd love to eat at every classy joint that wins three shining stars from the estimable Pete Wells, but I'd also love to retire someday, and so when it comes to high-end eats, I often just dine vicariously through NYT pics and prose. But when I saw a trio of sparklers awarded to Koloman, overseen by the Austrian chef Markus Glocker, I knew that daydreaming of deliciousness wouldn't suffice. That's because I immediately thought of Bâtard, Glocker's previous restaurant in Tribeca, where I once splurged on a magnificent meal shortly after it, too, scored not one not two but three stars from the Times. And so, determined to dine at Koloman, I did what I often do when I want to visit a fancy-schmancy establishment that's above my pay grade: I went for brunch (with my wife) and ordered a big beautiful spread that barely fit on our tabletop and walked out 90 minutes later with my belly noticeably bigger but my wallet only the tiniest bit slimmer. Obviously this strategy is not feasible at every restaurant with a dress code and a maître d'. Many such restaurants do not even open until the evening, and even if they offer a midday menu, it's often virtually identical to the nighttime version. Like a good number of fine dining venues, however, Koloman is in a hotel, and as a result, its hours and offerings are more accommodating. And so patrons can eat earlier, and spend less, and even enjoy divine daytime exclusives, such as Palatschinken (crepes with apricot confiture and freshly whipped cream), Kernöl (scrambled eggs with pumpkin seed oil and mache), crisp new potatoes with caraway, and a pot of their custom blend black tea, while still sampling some of the dinner menu's most enchanting eats, including beets "Linzer," which iirc were also a huge hit during Glocker's time at Bâtard. So, I recommend that you visit Koloman, and that you do so sooner rather than later, but of course, only at the time of day, or night, that works for you. read more

TLDR: Trash. This place is over-hyped because of social media and pretty plating. There is so much better food in NYC ESPECIALLY for this price point like wow. Do yourself a favor and don't let the frills convince you. I was a party of one. It took 10-15 minutes after being seated before anyone acknowledged me. One of the managers came to my table to ask what kind of water I wanted but then never brought that water. Two others came to my table to ask. Finally the third person actually brought me water. The waiter finally came to the table, didn't greet me and just started with "any drinks tonight?" I said no; their demeanor changed and they became visibly annoyed and they said "I'll give you more time to look" as they were turned away and walking away. After another 12 minutes, I had to call someone over to place an order. They waived the waiter over. My food was brought out quickly and it was less than mediocre: bland soufflé, not delicate as they should be. Best food at the table was the poppyseed bread. I planned to order a few more dishes, but I was so fed up with being disregarded. The treatment was just ridiculous. I asked for the check and it was brought. I provided my card and told the attendants I would run to the restroom. I returned 7 minutes later and waited another 10 minutes for my card and check. The waiter came over to me and said he thought he gave my card back. He misplaced my card. I'm waiting there, another 5-10 minutes. The manager brings my credit card over and says he's sooo sorry. I've never been so disrespected at an establishment. You don't get to assume how much people will spend and let that impact your service. How awful and shame on you. I called an gave them the opportunity to apologize. They said Adam, the GM would call me and he never did. Meh. Wouldn't be surprised if this place fails in a few years or less. read more

Came here for lunch during restaurant week ($30 for two courses and $45 for three). Everything was delicious. I particularly enjoyed the chicken schnitzel - crispy and razor thin breading on the outside and incredibly juicy chicken in the interior that pairs well with the slight sweetness and tartness from the lingonberry jam that it is served with. The apple strudel was also fantastic - again they excel in creating a contrast in textures with the incredibly flaky pastry shell wrapped around a warm and jammy apple filling. Service here is friendly and attentive, not snooty in the slightest. The decor here is also super on point - makes you feel like you're in a cafe in Vienna. read more

Great new restaurant in the Ace hotel. Definitely strong hotel restaurant vibes in terms of aesthetic - but 11/10 service really elevated this experience. Now, the food: Snapper Crudo, 9/10 - love horseradish, light nom Cheese Souffle, 8/10 - good, just not my vibe Beef Tenderloin, 10/10 - picturesque potato side Fluke, 7.5/10 - a little smoky for me Chocolate Cake, 8/10 - gooey, very salty ice cream Apple Strudel, 8.5/10 - classic for a reason Overall, meal was fab. Beef tenderloin was a 10 for me, and loved the potatoes that came with. I didn't love the Fluke - but should note my fiancé did. It just depends on your palette. If scotch is too peaty for you, maybe so is the fish - idk. TL;DR phenomenal service and very good food in the Ace hotel. We celebrated our wedding anniversary here a month ago and we really loved our meal. The bar entrance has a really cool vibe with the large illuminated clock. The dining space was cozy and we enjoyed being able to peer into the open kitchen space. We loved the food. The cheese soufflé, the beef tenderloin (this ribeye girl didn't even think she liked beef tenderloin), the oysters, even the salad were outstanding! Service was attentive and so hospitable. Now that I'm writing this review a month later Im remembering that we really need to go back. The schnitzel and the soufflé dessert are up to bat next. Service, food, and setting are all forgettable. $300 later, I wish I'd never been here. The only highlight, not being smug in any way, was the bus women who's smile and hustle never swayed. The smoked salmon and bagel was really good and not your typical platter with a really good bagel texture, flavorful fluffy cream cheese, and of course high quality salmon. I saw this place on a list of new restaurants posted by the Infatuation and was immediately intrigued. Markus Glocker and pastry chef, Emiko Chisholm, both have serious resumes, spending Batard and Augustine. The front of the restaurant is decorated with a beautiful bar and standing area. The entire place is pretty open so that everyone is able to see the open kitchen layout in the back. Even though we arrived twenty minutes earlier, they were very accommodating and seated us once our entire party arrived. The hostess, Jo, was incredibly friendly and welcoming. Once we got seated, they brought over two types of bread that were delicious. We chose to share a bunch of small plates and mains, but normally, they recommend that you choose one from each section. To start, we ordered the snapper crudo, sweet corn soup, short rib & tafelspiz terrine, pearl barely risotto, and cheese souffle. The standouts from the starts were the cheese soufflé and sweet corn soup. The cheese soufflé was aromatic and fluffy and the sweet corn soup surprised me with the flavor. Both dishes were really special. For the main course, we shared the brune landaise, which was a whole roasted chicken that came with sides of champagne cabbage and späzle. Even though the menu notes that it is for two people, I think it is more than enough for three! The whole chicken was amazing and the sides really complimented the flavor. The chicken was perfectly cooked and seasoned and the cabbage was borderline addicting. We ended with the cherries & champagne which was also a standout dish. The flavor of the cherries paired well with the balsamic, and the champagne ice cream really held the champagne flavor. The main and dessert are definitely two dishes I highly recommend ordering. Overall, I really enjoyed my experience at Koloman. I will note that I was a little more lenient with my rating because I did visit the restaurant during their first week, so I completely understand if waiters are still in training. Koloman is definitely a pricier restaurant, but I would definitely recommend trying it out on a special occasion if you're looking for something a little different and fun. read more
