The space has been made bright and modern & the wine list is concise & well chosen. To be clear, this is Austrian food with French Flair. The French rarely cook with Mandelbrot The bread box is a showstopper and comes with dinner. Poppy Seeded roll is very Austrian/ German style & scrumptious. There are seeds lining the bottom of the bread basket. Ate: Beet salad Corn soup Fluke Total: $88 before tip Beet salad with candied orange and hazelnuts is luxurious. I forgot to take a picture because I couldn't stop eating. Chef Markus Glocker who once cooked at Batard creates food that is beautiful and so high level. Corn soup with scallops and lovage is also delectable & reminiscent of one I had recently at Batard. The food and service at Koloman were very good. They are experimenting with interesting dishes, and the menu is one of the more creative and ambitious ones I've seen recently. We started with the gougeres and snapper crudo. Gougeres are one of my favorites, and this version was a delight - extremely light and airy. I was so excited when they came to the table that I forgot to snap a photo! The snapper crudo had a good mix of flavors and textures. We then shared the roasted beets "linzer" and the short rib & tafelspitz terrine. Both were successful dishes. The beet dish had many interesting textural elements. The terrine was a creative riff on a traditional terrine, and they pulled it off. For our mains we had the beef tenderloin and seared fluke. The beef was good, though inconsistently seasoned - some parts tasted unsalted, others were well seasoned. The fluke was the star of the show of this course - the almond crust gave it such an interesting texture, we kept wanting to go back for another bite. Sitting at the bar as I write this review. Pardon my French, no pun intended, but the vibe is sexy AF. The bar seats are comfortable. The setting is beautiful. This is the perfect spot for a 1st date, drinks only kind of night. They use frozen glasses which is a beautiful touch. I had the pin hook whiskey on the rocks and I instantly felt transported into a fantasy land. The art work in the restaurant is stunning! The server was attentive and friendly. She made sure the whiskey was to my liking. There is incredible detail put into making the drinks. I watched the bartender be meticulous with her technique which was beautiful to see. We started with the bread which was incredible. It came in a bed of pumpkin seeds. The butter was creamy and delicious. There was another bread item that tasted like a knish. All the flavors are fun. We also got the cheese soufflé which was delicious. The prices are high but you are paying for the atmosphere and the attention to detail. For dinner we had the Black Sea bass and roasted roasted duck breast. The Black Sea was the best I've ever had. The skin was crispy. The fish was delicate, moist and flaky. The flavors with the mussels was out of this world. The duck breast came with tortellini noodles that tasted like heaven. The dessert was the apple strudel, ice cream and soufflé. All the flavors were incredible. All I can say is wow! This was such a delicious night! The food quality is definitely a 5 however the portions and the cost put it at a 4.5. The cost is very high and I understand for the quality service and location but it does make it cost prohibitive. The elegantly redesigned space was introduced to us by a very welcoming staff -- from greeting us at the front door to seating us at a booth table, recognizing our preference for a quieter dining experience. The food was both delicious and well presented. The a la carte menu is set up in four sections with a manageable (non-overwhelming) variety of options. We thoroughly enjoyed all of our choices that included the Snapper Crudo, Roasted Beets "Linzer", Grilled Trumpet Mushrooms, and Seared Fluke. Delicious Austrian food and wine, attentive service and a kitchen that is on it's toes. I had the parsnip soup "veloute" which was superb. The apple strudel with toasted hazelnuts was also excellent. The beef "paprikash" was beautifully cooked but the sauce was too amped up, it tasted like a mildly spicy sugary Szechuan sauce that overpowered the beef flavor. The spaetzel were delicious, delicate and delicately sprinkled with herbs. Another stand out was the fresh caraway brioche-style bread. The space is fun but awkward and the trip to the bathroom is like spelunking into a cave. But the positives outweigh the negatives and I will definitely be back. read more

This place is hard to review. First, the service was excellent. Everyone was super friendly and helpful and kind. The food was hit and miss. The gougeres were amazing. Serving it with horseradish sauce is a great idea! We had the crudo, which was so salty we couldn't eat it. The waiter noticed and comped it for us, which was really nice. We also had the beets which were good, but not sensational. The duck breast was cooked perfectly. We also had a green salad which was way too salty. The salt was the overwhelming factor which disappointed us. We had specifically gotten the leafy green salad as a nice balance to the heavy duck, but the salt ruined it. We ended up skipping dessert. They brought out these little financiers when they bring you the bill. Delicious. If I were to go again, I would be careful about what I order and specifically ask for no salt to be added to our dishes. read more

We really loved this restaurant. The dirty martini I ordered and the food was all top quality. The sweet potato stuffed agnolotti dish was particularly unique and noteworthy - the perfect balance of savory and sweet and a truly memorable dish. They seemed to be in a hurry to flip our table thorough and weren't particularly flexible on seating - they claimed that all their booth tables were already reserved despite the restaurant being empty for quite a while when we arrived at 6. We've been here over a dozen times. If you never had Wiener Schnitzel, or even if you've had it, you need to try Koloman's version. I've spent lots of time in Vienna and Koloman's is quite possibly the best I've ever had. Veal cutlet pounded to around 1 cm, lightly panko-crusted, served with a delectable cucumber salad, potato salad and lingonberry sauce. I am getting hungry just writing this, because so wasn't able to have one for temporary health reasons. Here's the even better part. I am on a very restrictive diet for a bit and I came for the rest of the family to enjoy their meal. I told my waiter i was just going to watch, since there was nothing on the menu which met my temporary dietary restrictions. The general manager came to me and basically did a mini interviewee what i could/ couldn't eat. He was genuinely concerned for my health, that I had a good time, and left satiated. He went back and forth between our table and the kitchen several times. He and the chef were insistent to make something for me I could eat. Well, it wasn't on the menu but they delivered a meal that knocked my socks off. Bravo! Oh and I wish we'd taken pictures of our meals, but that table got really quiet quickly as we devoured our meals. You simply cannot go wrong with anything on the menu. Go enjoy Koloman! The food was decent, but the service left much to be desired during my birthday celebration with a friend. We briefly sat together for selfies, ensuring not to disturb the lone customer nearby. To our surprise, the manager insisted we might disturb other customers, despite the sole person being that nearby diner. We occupied the outermost table, and my friend even sat on the outer edge of the sofa chair to be considerate. Interestingly, the nearby customer seemed to be a professional food evaluator, receiving repeated inquiries about the food from various waiters. The stark contrast in service made it evident that he was no normal customer. While I understand the desire to cater to professionals, the manager's handling of the situation negatively impacted our experience, leaving me disappointed on my birthday. This well reviewed restaurant lives up to its reputation. The food is outstanding. We had a superlative duck parfait (pate); cheese soufflé was light and tasty. We had the chicken for 2 which so moist and flavorful. Spaetzle and cabbage were perfect side dishes. Duck egg crème brûlée was as good as I have ever had. I expected better of a Viennese Parisian restaurant on the NY Times top 100. The service was haphazard and uneven and we were seated next to a ceiling leak. The restaurant was virtually empty which in NYC is an omen. A restaurant in a hotel has a lot to overcome to be considered world class. I ate at Koloman in October so this is a belated review. I made a reservation for 8:30 pm on a Wednesday and it was still pretty busy. I arrived on time but my table wasn't ready for another 15 minutes. A lot of guests seem to take their time during dinner. Space: Koloman is next to the Ace hotel. The bathroom is shared with the hotel. There's a bar area in front and a dining room in the back. I got seated next to the front desk, which wasn't a great spot. My table was small and a bit cramped. I could hear conversations from most of the tables next to me. It was also a bit dark. I'm not a fan of dimly lit restaurants but it might be nice to others. Service/Staff: The staff was lovely and so attentive. They checked on me multiple times while I was waiting for my table. The staff realized our table was crooked and fixed it right away. They also folded my napkin every time I got up, which I thought was nice of them. Food: Lots of different options on the menu to choose from. Most of the dishes are small so if you come with a group, I would order different items and share everything. Here's what I ordered: -Lychee nectar juice: Surprisingly very good and refreshing! Came in a cute bottle. -Edelweiss cocktail: A bit too strong for me. -Sweet corn soup: My favorite dish of the night (but there was an odd sour vinaigrette taste at the bottom that I didn't care for). -Duck liver parfait: It came with a side of toasted brioche. Perfect consistency. -Salad composé: Great side salad to eat with heavier foods. -Cheese souffle: It's on the small side, which was perfect for me. It was exactly what I was hoping for. It sounded like other guests liked this dish as well. -Beef tenderloin: I liked the baumkuchen it came with. -Duck egg creme brulee: The pineapple and mint were a nice addition. Very nice restaurant in the Ace Hotel. My wife had the avocado toast and she raved about it. I had a croissant and the scrambled eggs. The croissant was excellent but not as good as I had hoped for given the reviews. The eggs were also fine although I would have preferred just buttery scrambed eggs over the pistachio gremolata or whatever they put on them. We were walk ins. It was not busy at the time but we were seated in a high-traffic area that the servers had to work around. I would have seated that table last but I don't know how they decide to place diners in restaurants. read more

We had a fantastic time here. The wine list is wildly approachable, by leaning into Austrian/German/Hungarian wines they offer many bottles under $60, and a ton under $75. Every dish was a total hit -- the beef trio, celeriac tartare, cheese soufflé, chicken for two, and dessert soufflé. The cooking is refined by not too precious. I can't recommend Koloman highly enough. Two things to note. Entering the restaurant is a little weird -- you're directed to the hotel lobby and feel like you're sneaking in. And the bathroom, through the hotel lobby and down a steep flight of stairs, is really inaccessible. read more

This ranks somewhere between 3.5-4 stars. Decided to have dinner here on Friday somewhat on a whim. The ambiance was very lively surrounded by a bar area on both sides. The food wasn't bad but also wasn't memorable. A few days later and I can't think of any dish that stood out and overall the flavors from the dish were a little muted, like one more dash of salt or pinch of pepper would have made it just right. Everything is served a la carte and I was told the chef recommends ordering 3 courses. To start, I had the lobster burger, which came with fingerling potatoes covered in some type of cream sauce and caviar. The lobster burger was really good, but I didn't think the potatoes were needed as a first course. Would have much rather had the caviar and sauce on the burger. Next, I had the cheese souffle, which was ok. For my mains I had the beef tenderloin and the salmon en croute. Out of the two, the salmon was by far the favorite. The fish was nice and flakey and it came with a nice beet sauce. I don't really remember what the beef tasted like other than meaty. To finish my meal, I had what was essentially a chocolate lave cake, which again the flavors for this were really muted, so I'd pass on this. All in all a decent meal, but one that I likely won't be repeating. read more

Koloman was our second stop in the Financial Times's "10 Best New NYC Restaurants", after Cafe Carmellini. The evening didn't get off to the greatest start, as the maitre'd seemed a bit chilly and the tables for two are close together and weirdly situated (the room seems more built for groups unless you can nab a booth). But, we moved ourselves to the bar, and this my friends is where the evening went right. And not just because we drank two of the Emma Goldman cocktail, which is a WILD whisky-Calvados creation with an actual smoke-in-glass component. Highly recommend, and you gotta love a place that takes its drink presentation seriously. We also listened hard to the lovely bartender for recommendations on the food, so here goes: Gougeres: These are classic French cheese puffs, like popovers with cheese. They are SPECTACULAR. Honestly, a plate of these and a good glass of wine could turn any frown upside down. Kingfish Crudo: Wonderful, very original dish with horseradish and citrus. Schnitzel: I can't vouch for this one as I don't eat veal, but my husband is German and picky, and he was LOVING this dish. I had the salmon en croute which is also delicious - a little heavy, but, I mean, the place is French-Viennese after all! We have since been back and for something lighter I would very much also recommend the "Mer" starter which is a light seafood crudo tower and is incredible - smoked mackerel! tuna tartare! as well as the Pithivier roasted leeks entree. THE DESSERTS!!! Here is where Koloman just goes off the rails in the bestest way. The best apple strudel I've ever had, hands down; Lübeck marzipan; a spectacular Ésterhazy almond torte. As much as I do love the rest of the menu, the desserts (along with the friendly folks and amazing cocktails) are what really won me over to Koloman. Speaking of people - after the one night of a chilly entrance and not-great table, the service warmed up spectacularly, everyone was super lovely, surprises even arrived at the table, and we now find Koloman a truly convivial neighborhood spot. I eat at restaurants 3-7 days per week in some wonderful restaurants across San Francisco, New York, Barcelona, Paris and generally all over the world. Ranging from fast casual burgers and burritos to 3 starred Michelin restaurants. Koloman was singularly the worst dinning experience I've had in at least 5 years. Likely 750 restaurants in 5 yrs. We arrived 5 mn late to our reservation. After our meal while my two guests and I were catching up on business we were asked to leave just 1hr and 10 mn after getting seated since the restaurant booked another reservation. Never in my life was I asked to give up a seat at a restaurant for another guest. It might (emphasize might) be understandable if we sat at the table not ordering food for an overall time of past 2 hrs. This was not that what happened. We sat for just 1 hr 10 mn total dine time. I will never go back nor recommend. Below is the review of the food and the atmosphere. Food- Tuna carpaccio was heavily salted. Almost inedible Schnitzel was under salted and lacked flavor (waiter claimed best schnitzel in the city) Overall menu-for the price Pont was quite uninspiring Atmosphere- the restaurant largely reused the interior design and finished of the last restaurant. Brunch with a gf because I just needed to spend time with friends after my last week working before a two week PTO moment. Boy is it well needed. We met here for brunch and let me tell you I am surprised this place is where it is. I've been to the Ace Hotel next door and I have walked by all this place so many times and I did not know this place existed. The drinks are delicious! There was a gin based drink that I asked the bartender to replace with Titos and it was delicious. Unfortunately I do not remember the name of the drink... You will just have to take my word. I wasn't all the interested in the main and my appetite is generally small so I got their appetizer dish, the duck parfait, and dear God was this the best thing I have ever had in a long time. If you are not a big pate person, then you will not like this, but that is so my ish. This is just an elevated version of it. Smooth and served with brioche, but they will replace it with sour dough if you ask. I recommend you do so. Personally do not think something smooth should be consumed with a soft bread. Maybe I am wrong and need to give it a try. One thing I want to note though is you aren't allowed to add a side salad if you do not get a main... However, they are really thoughtful in a sense they asked if I wanted more bread when I still had half my parfait left and I ate up all the bread. I am a huge sucker for thoughtfulness. I do not think it takes all that much to put a bit of thought into things and they do it well. I will be going back here real soon for their duck parfait and a few drinks. Two thumbs up! read more

Came for martini hour, which apparently is only at the bar. When we sat down at our table and asked about it, the server clearly judged us, before walking away without comment. Turns out she was checking with the host stand to confirm that martini hour was only at the bar, but her initial abrupt departure left us perplexed and irked. After my friends ordered martinis (I had arrived early and had ordered at the bar), we decided to call it quits and let the server know we were leaving, no food required. She clearly ran off to rat us out to manager, who showed up shortly after to reiterate that martini hour was only at the bar . We promptly asked for the check, paid, and left. Despite the terrible, judgmental service, my friend still tipped well, as a courtesy we weren't provided! Definitely would not hurry back here anytime soon. read more

New York's take on an upscale, French-modern restaurant. First, for whatever reason the tables get hit by a freezing cold breeze whenever the front door opens (in winter). I literally had to keep my jacket on during dinner, otherwise it would have been very uncomfortable (I recommend they put up an internal curtain the keep the cold out). The wine list is extra incredible, and my wife, who is a sommelier, said it was absolutely breathtaking in scope. Definitely have the cheese soufflé; it is something to behold. The steak for two was perfectly cooked and absolutely tender. Service is knowledgeable and professional, and they made us feel right at home. Highly recommended. read more

I didn't love the sauce that went with it (friend did). Then we had the cheese soufflé (so soft!) and the beets (my least favorite but still good). I had the salmon en croute which was really excellent. My friends had the risotto and fennel tagliatelle both also really good. We ended with creme brulee and cheesecake excellent. Our server was so nice and helpful. Ambiance was nice as well - I just didn't love that you have to walk through a hotel to go to the bathroom and had a totally different feel. Woo hoo! Fun night in a nice new restaurant. Awesome buzz at this place. Friends assured me that the decor is authentically Austrian. It was a bit dark, but nice. The waitstaff were excellent and very attentive, as one would expect in a new restaurant run by big name chefs. They have a sommelier! An excellent one, who did not immediately push super expensive bottles of wine. We drank an excellent bottle of gruner veltliner and I had my first Austrian Chardonnay. The bread was excellent and hot- the poppy seed rolls were awesome. We sampled an assortment of appetizers. The gougeres were awesome and served as a delivery vehicle for some ethereal truffle butter. We also tried the crudo, celery root tartare, souffle and tagliatelle. They were all excellent. Our table was evenly split between the salmon and the fluke. The salmon was awesome. The pastry crust was rich and delicious. Our table mates were equally happy with the fluke. We were collectively underwhelmed by Koloman. The food was fine but nothing special, really, and at this price point fine isn't the benchmark. The presentation was truly excellent on every dish--it was like a work of art on the plate. But the entree portions were disappointing; three small chunks of chicken for $38 leaves one feeling cheated. The salmon en croute, which was, again, absolutely beautiful on the plate, was a skimpy portion. The appetizers were better, both in terms of taste and value. Everything tasted ok, but nothing really stood out as spectacular. The service was friendly and helpful, and we enjoyed the leisurely pacing. It was a pleasant evening. But no better than that--one can do better than pleasant for the same (or less) money. read more

Food was tasty but overall, they didn't leave me yearning for more. FYI - I don't know what I was thinking but I thought the short rib terrine was a warm dish but it was actually a cold jelly / meat dish. That could my ignorance. I usually gravitate towards warm food for dinner so I was a little....surprised. I initially wanted to come here for the drinks given the hype for its wine menu curated by a knowledgable team / beverage director. I do think it delivered well. Wow wow wow. I had made a note to visit Koloman after reading a number of stellar reviews and finally made it there tonight. The space is lovely and the vibe is lively but not a scene which I liked. My husband and I shared a salad to start thinking that our main courses would be fairly filling. The salad was bright and fresh although other than the radishes which were so perfect that they were otherworldly, seemed like a bit of an afterthought. Fortunately, however, the mains didn't disappoint. Although I don't always love salmon I thought it would be a mistake to pass up the salmon en croute. I'm so happy that I ordered it. It was one of the best entrees I've ever had. My husband ordered the duck and raved about it. Service was great as well. This is the kind of place you can go with family, friends, spouse and have a lovely meal. Can't wait to return. read more

Now that the buzz on this restaurant has died down a bit, it's actually possible to get a dinner reservation before 10pm. We went a couple of nights ago for the second time; the first time we had to sit at the bar. Unfortunately, although the buzz around Koloman has died down, the noise inside has not. It is DEAFENINGLY LOUD in this place. Impossible to hold a conversation without shouting and cupping your ears to hear your dining companion, or the wait staff for that matter. The bar was quieter when we went a few months ago. Seriously, the room is so loud that it ruins your enjoyment of the food. And the food is tremendous. No question about that. We had the duck liver mousse--smooth and unctuous. The gazpacho--bright and flavorful. The cheese souffle--ethereal. The schnitzel--yummy (if small). Great creative cocktails and a nice wine list too. Everything the kitchen sends out is first-rate. Seriously, these folks need to lay down thick carpet and put up acoustic tile.
