Oh no. I think I heard about this place from latimes about 2 employees from Holbox that made their own restaurant. I think my favorite would be the tortilla sample where it gives you a bunch of different tortillas. Their tortillas are really good, like 8/10, but I think everything else was mediocre in that I wasn't too impressed by it. Yes, hidden in plain sight in the shadows of Holmax! Tried this with some friends last week. Possible the best tacos I have ever had. And we shared some plantains, also excellent. It's in a food court shared with a bunch of other restaurants, so it's ambience isn't great but a little noisy. You order and they bring the food. A little bit of a wait but well worth it. Parking in the lot is available not too pricey. Street parking is available but a little dicey! read more

This restaurant is inside of a food court. If there's a line, make sure to double check if this is for the right restaurant because my friend and I were standing in the wrong line for 45 minutes for nothing and we ordered our food for pick up. The staff was really busy so even though my bag of food was ready once I was able to sit down outside, the food was cold and I just wish that I would've gotten my food at an earlier time. I will definitely try to come back with my mom to see what she thinks because she absolutely loves grasshoppers and huitlacoche. I was so excited for the quesadilla, because I grew up eating these dishes, but I think that the grasshoppers were extremely salty and I wish that they had more flavor, like garlic for example. In the second quesadilla, I did not taste the huitlacoche. It had like Chile Verde in it that overpowered the flavor so all I tasted was chili Verde and the fresh corn. Huitlacoche is supposed to taste umami and like mushrooms, but I did not get that flavor with this dish and the pieces themselves were very small. What is not pictured is the cactus agua fresca and honestly that was such a treat! I recommend it so much. I bought my friend the taco with costilla and honestly that was very flavorful and hearty- the meat and potato complimented one another really well! When I come back with my mom I'm ordering those tacos and a cactus agua fresca. I also ordered their hand made tortillas, and o can't complain about those, they were delicious! read more

We decided to venture to Komal on a Wednesday. It was about 1:30pm and we were able to walk right up to the counter. We ordered the tlacoyos (which comes with an order of two) and a quesadilla of squash blossom. Both were very good and rich in color, texture and flavor. The tlacoyos in particular were hearty and frankly enough for me. I especially love the pillowy soft tortilla on the bottom. We also had an agua fresca, which you can request with or without ice, and was refreshing. Parking can be a challenge given the small parking lot, but there is free street parking nearby. read more

I ordered a Tacos Sonia and I was a bit confused since it didn't look like what was advertised, but went with it. Turns out I got the weekend special instead which was beef short rib taco with grandma's adobo. It was okay, I wasn't a big fan of the fried rice in the taco. The mole on the meat was very flavorful but I wish I got more unctuous morsels. You can tell the house made corn tortillas are top tier but the filling just didn't match it. I feel guilty for this review and want to give this place another chance. Service was good and didn't take long to get my food. LA has stepped up its game with great tasting tortillas. If you've been to Holbox located inside Mercado de Paloma, you've likely had their great tasting tortillas. Behind the scene were Fatima and Coronado hand crafting heirloom grown corn using nixtamal processes into delicious tasting tortillas. We got to meet Corondo while in line for a late lunch before closing. Very friendly and humble, he mentioned his story to us while looking over 60 feet way at Holbox where he and his wife once made tortillas for the Michelin star restaurant. We just had lunch but were driving up the I-110 and recall hearing about Komal Molina via online food writers. So, we decided to go for a quick bite. The line was short. Menu here is quite simple with a handful of offerings. We decided on ordering Taco Sonia and Quesadilla Guisado. Taco Sonia is very good. The beef shoulder is sliced thin, tender and has a great char. It's also mixed with chopped longanisa and cactus and topped with a salsa roja. Great flavors of charred beef, spices and fatty flavors of the chorizo and texture of the cactus + the blue heirloom corn tortillas make this taco top tier delicious. Quesadilla Guisado is pretty good too. It's a bit more simple with pork chorizo and Oaxacan cheese with salsa on the side. Just like anything cheesy, you'll need to eat this one right away so the cheese doesn't lose it's elasticity. Overall, great tasting food. If you're waiting in line at Holbox or waiting for food, it's worth trying Komal Molina. Line was short only 2 deep while Holbox had a line of 20+. Another great addition to Mercado de Paloma. Service here was very kind and friendly. As mentioned, we came close to closing and they were out of Topo Chico. Instead, they comp'd us with bottled water. Parking isn't too bad on the weekends. They do open up the opposite side of the fence where during the week is for DMV customers. read more

Loved walking in to see the bright yellow food stand. Surprised and relieved there was no line because we were there before noon. Took L there for her Birthday- we were both looking forward to KOMAL opening. The staff was friendly and happy to be there so we felt welcomed. The salad was sweet and crunchy. It worked well with the Quesadilla which was bursting with mushrooms in a good way and not overpowered by the cheese. The meat in the Taco Sonia had flecks of fat but it wasn't greasy and with the nopales. Yumm I could eat more easily. The stars of our lunch were the tortillas- they were by far our favorite. Came here after hearing it was one of the cooks from the other restaurants in the same plaza. I will say this place was different, more on the "fast food" type. However, it was very delicious like the others. Some of their taco options is not something I would normally try but I am glad I did. They were very tasty and fresh as they came out. They share seating within the plaza so there is plenty of it. The parking here is crazy busy to keep that in mind, you can definitely find it but usually street parking is the better option. I was told there is a parking structure being built next door which, once done, will help out a lot. The staff was also great. It does get pretty loud from so many people and things going on so not ideal for an interview or a "private" chat. But I will definitely keep coming back. read more

We ordered the flautas de papa, chuchito, and tlacoyos. Each one was delicious. You can taste the level of care and intention in every layer of flavor and ingredient. The chuchito was a real stand out, I'm still thinking about it. It's also meaningful to learn about their masa mission, what goes into what they do, and cool seeing the origins and different varieties of corn being highlighted and respected in that way.  Can't wait to come back! read more

That line is not to enter the market place. It's for HOLBOX. Onto the food! The menu is short. We ordered a few items to try. I can only tell you we enjoyed two items the most. Flora De Calabaz and Tacos Costilla. (Check out the photos) Both delicious. The rest are just okay IMO. It's open seating. You pay, get a number and find a seat. TIP: If you're ordering multiple items be sure to save your receipt! It's so busy and they might forget to bring everything you ordered. Luckily I kept mine and marked each item off as we got it. The Milpa salad is phenomenal. It's my favorite item on the menu. The sweet corn cake is a close second. You can tell the owner takes great pride in her tortillas, as well as sourcing the maize straight from Mexico. Holbox is what it is, thanks to Komal. My goodness. Komal is a new restaurant that truly embodies the value of back to basics and they do it incredibly well. I'm surprised but am with no doubts that the best tortilla that I have ever had is here. The quesadilla guisado is excellent, contains high quality cheese, and truly highlights the beauty and deliciousness of their tortilla. The molotes de platano was a highlight dish. The plantain balls were savory sweet, fluffy, slightly crispy and were sitting in a bath that reflected the sweet and savory categories, then contrasted with silky, smooth, complex flavors. The most delicious mole I've ever had paired perfectly with the plantain balls. The service is friendly and overall excellent, something you would expect from protégés of the neighboring Holbox. Komal serves very fresh food, which of course I appreciate. I had the squash flower quesadilla and plantain with mole balls. My experience is the quesadilla was bland. Nothing really tasted like it was seasoned. Just bland, flat flavors. The plantains and mole were much better, in regards to flavor. Komal more than lived up to its hype. They have huge bins of the heirloom corn they use and you can see the heirloom Ayocote beans as well. The tortillas are other worldly--the stretch and the bite, it smells like fresh breakfast. The fresh corn and cheese and calabaza flowers in the quesadillas are of some of the highest quality available in Los Angeles. You can taste the love in this food. We visited Mercado La Paloma to eat at Holbox. However, being a Saturday the line was all the way to the DMV. So we decided to try Komal as neither of us had been there. We ordered the Molotes de Platano, Tlacoyos, Tacos Sonia, Milpa Salad, & Quesadilla de Huitlacoche. I really liked the Milpa salad and the quesadilla. We weren't crazy about the Tlacoyos. They seem somewhat heavy and stodgy. Overall, I found it very tasty and authentic. We also ordered Agua Fresca and I like the fact that it wasn't as sweet as some other vendors make them. Been following Komal on Instagram for awhile and was happy to finally try them! Been chasing a high from the street food in CDMX and this definitely scratches the itch. Tried the squash blossom and corn quesadilla and the taco sonia. Love these beautiful corn tortillas but felt like they were a bit stingy with the salsa. Taco sonia was pretty big and difficult for me to eat (like I definitely needed a fork and knife). I liked the quesadilla more than the taco sonia and I really want to try them when they have huitlacoche (sometimes they announced on their Instagram). Overall pretty good experience, but not super outstanding. Mercado Paloma was packed when we visited and we were definitely tightly packed in among strangers. Kinda wish komal could have its own place to set a better vibe but hopefully any holbox runoff gives them a try! read more

The nextdoor, Holbox is getting ridiculously busy lately. I've been going there since 2018 and Holbox was a special place for me for a long time. Now that I'm getting older, I don't have the same patience to wait in line to get the food I use to get so quickly. hahaha I'm happy for Holbox's great success tho. Anyway that's the reason I decided to try Komal one day. Don't get me wrong. I still love Komal but I am not excited about the inconsistency of the dish I like. I always order the same taco, "Taco Sonia". The first few times were absolutely amazing. I wanted to go back and eat it again and again. But then the taco was very salty a few times. And another time, it got too soggy with the sauce. I want to have the same "wow" experience like the first time but it hasn't been the same. I hope Taco Sonia will taste good again. p.s. What a gem! This is a stall in Mercado la Paloma. On the weekend, there is free parking in the rear, because they use the DMV parking lot. Don't be scared off by the line outside the door. That's for the fish joint. Instead, walk past that and go to the right. There, you will find friendly staff where you order at the counter and then find a table. Every dish here we had was fantastic. The mole is superb. The tortillas are absolutely fresh and made with incredible artisanal corn. You will not be disappointed. This is a must-visit. read more

Komal is putting out some great food. I recently tried a chicken tinga sope made with blue corn masa. It was so tasty and filling. A great balance of flavor. I recommend you try it. This is a casual setting with other restaurants sharing the same space and tables. So you can try something from the other great restaurants in this center. I'm from Puebla, and it's difficult to find any Mexican hand-made tortillas, let alone good Mexican food, around USC, but this establishment hit the spot. Their agua de nopal and their quesadilla con flor de calabaza absolutely delicious, no notes. The staff is always walking around and very attentive.
