Gyu don was pretty good with a pretty rich, umami sweet sauce. The beef was pretty tender too.

Went for lunch just after they opened for the day, which wasn't busy with dine-in customers, but had takeout orders. Started getting busier with diners closer to when we were leaving since it was around noon then. Casual spot where you order and pay at the front counter and then choose where you want to sit. Menu is pretty much Japanese classic comfort foods, like gyudon, curry, and udon, which each having a few variations. When food is ready, it comes to your table delivered by a robot server. Water and additional napkins/cutlery is self-serve at a specific counter, although when dining in, it comes on your tray. Katsu was nice and crispy, not overly oily, and meat wasn't dry. Okonomiyaki was just ok, so better to pass on it.

Come to me for Japanese food. Indeed, Kome Shokudo is the local spot for your affordable Japanese comfort food. We revisited for the first time in several years and were still impressed by the food portions and menu offerings. The flavours are nothing to write home about but for about $15 or less you can get a giant bowl of teriyaki beef on rice (gyudon), various udon, tempura or pork/chicken katsu curry. Only the shrimp curry with rice is a bit skimpy in the number of shrimps for the large option. It's neat that the quick-serve comes to your table via a robot server. You can fill up on fresh water at the drink station. The only downside is the decor which has aged over the years of popular use and plenty of graffiti seemingly from students scribbled on the walls of the side tables. Skip it or hit it? When you're craving for a quick Japanese fix this is good meal option. It can get busy in here so just be prepared.

October 16, 2025 - I got the large pork Katsu Teishouku. I've never had a Teishouku before. It was kind of like a Bento box disassembled. It came with a little bit of seaweed, pork Katsu and rice, cabbage salad and miso soup. The food is really was good - great Japanese comfort food. I guess my only minor complain was the katsu was a little thin and mostly breading. Also, not sure if I was eating it properly, but the pork Katsu with the rice was a little dry, even as I dipped the katsu in the sauce. This place was also sort of like a fast food restaurant, but also had those robots that served your food when it was ready. Almost cafeteria style.

This is my go to place for lunch or dinner if I want something quick and delicious. I've been coming here for yesrs and I'm surprised the place is not packed all the yime. This is a fast food place so the atmosphere is very simple like a fast food place. If you have been to Japan, it's like the Yoshinoya chain which ha similar menu specializing in the beef onion rice bowl. If you want a non cookingnight, this is a great option as long as the place is not too farfatfrom your home. If you don't like beef, they have a chicken teriyaki and miso salmon that are both delicious. I came tonight and was looking forward to the salmon but they were out of salmon...not sure if that happens often. Their beef rice bowl (gyudon) is delicious so I would highly recommend this item. On their snacks list, theyhaveOkonomiyaki(veggie with small octopus piecespancake) which is very tasty. It's s agreat appetizer item.

We've been coming here for years. It is exactly how they how they advertise them as...home comfort food. The food is consistent with no frills. The menu is gyudons, curries and udon. They have some combos where you can get a full meal with soup and a drink and dessert. They also have kid combos. No table service, you order at the counter and take a seat, a 'robotic server' will deliver your food to your table. This is a very family friendly place. With the exception of the change from ramen to udon, the menu has not changed over the years. Again, nothing fancy...consistent and expected.

I've been here a handful of times in the past. I finally decided to do a review to let others know how awesome this place is. It's literally a hidden gem! They serve authentic Japanese food such as udon and gyudon (beef rice bowl). How it works is you place your order at the counter for either dine in or take out. If you dine in, you would grab a table and their robot will serve you the food. No tips are required. It's been a while since my last visit. I brought my kids here over the past weekend as we were in the area. They found the robot interesting and it definitely caught their attention the whole time we were there. I ordered a large curry chicken karaage and two kid's chicken teriyaki don, one with apple juice and the other with orange juice. I guess I was so hungry and too busy looking after my kids, I didn't even realize we got the wrong order. They had given us the incorrect kids meal. It was suppose to be teriyaki don and they gave us curry chicken katsu don instead. While we were eating, the staff came up to us and apologized saying they had given us the wrong dish. They packed up the teriyaki don and said we could take that as well. Totally satisfied with their service. Their service has always been amazing. The staff is always so patient and polite. The prices are pretty reasonable too, most of the dishes have three sizes to choose from depending on how hungry you are. But one thing I didn't really like is there's not a lot of meat in the kids menu. They offer a small discount like 5% if you pay with cash, it's certainly better than nothing. Highly recommend this restaurant. I would be definitely be back when I need to get my fix for Japanese food.

Quick and easy comfort meal when you want to grab some quick udon or express popcorn chicken. Family style and kids will enjoy this place. It is an okay place and don't expect real tasty food here.

Food is aite. Lots of options from gyu don, beef rice to katsu rice. They also got some snacks as well. Most of the rice options come on 3 sizes. The staff are friendly and kind. They got the robot bringing you food to the table. Shop is spacious. Jumbo cheese gyu don Katsu curry don If you miss the gyu dons in Japan ill say this is a goo bandaid!

I was in the area and decided to try their lunch takeout. I ordered the beef don with tofu and lettuce. It came without rice and I ended up having to order rice for $2 extra. It was not expensive though, $13.5+tax in total with good portion of tofu and beef provided. Unfortunately I accidentally dropped all the tofu on the ground and couldn't tell you how it tasted. Overall, it is quite filling without the rice for a small eater. The beef was also yummy, and I felt so healthy that this dish provided good balance of nutrition.

We got the Gyudon with Scallion and Hot Spring Eggs, Gyudon with Cheese, Chicken Karaage, and Ebi Fry. Overall the donburis were good, although they could have used some more sauce so the rice at the bottom wouldn't be as plain and bland. The Ebi Fry was nice and crispy, but the Chicken Karaage was a bit chewy and not as juicy as we'd have liked. The portions for the donburis were huge for regular size that we couldn't finish, so it was a good thing they served them in take-out containers so it was convenient to bring home. Service was fast food style - you pay first at the counter when you order, then you find a seat and a robot delivers your food which was cool. They also have a stamp card for a free regular size main dish for every 8 that you buy.

jumbo gyu don with scallions and onsen tamago (hot spring egg)

Resto is located in the McD's plaza at 16th & Leslie. While I'm not sold on saying they have the best gyu dons in town, I do know they are probably the only resto that offers a JUMBO size for their rice bowls if you're REALLY hungry. So big eaters can rejoice! The taste itself fluctuates a lot. As in, the quality of the beef is always pretty good and the rice is nice and fluffy but the sauce tastes different all the time. Sometimes the sauce under the beef is well balanced. Sweet and salty. On other visits, the sauce is way TOO salty. Like icky almost. So it's kinda strange. I'm left wondering if the chef is kinda eyeballing the sauce formula too much when he makes the rice bowls. Either way, the ingredients are pretty fresh. I've yet to try the curry or udon dishes at this resto (since gyudon is their namesake/signature item). One gripe I do have, is the prices have been raised (just from looking at their site). I'm writing this review a couple years late but I rmbr the jumbo bowl being $13 for the scallion and onsen tamago bowl. Now that SAME jumbo bowl is $16+. It's starting to creep into $20 territory and I think the resto should be careful about this (you've already raised it due to inflation, but don't raise the price anymore otherwise you'll start alienating customers). On my last visit, my friends all thought the food was a lil too salty and not balanced enough. I thought the flavour profile was still manageable. I would still return while my friends will probably not.

I've been meaning to give this place a try, especially seeing how busy it is. I came for an earlier dinner (around 5:45 pm) on a Sunday and was able to grab a table for four. The place is decent in size and is food court style, where you order at the counter, give them your table number, sit down, then a robo cat brings the food to your table. There's a mixture of booths and tables, but generally, not very spacious - the booth was just right for four, with little room to move around, especially with our winter coats. Cleanliness was decent. Even though I understand this isn't really a customer service based restaurant (i.e. no servers), I felt there could be improvement in terms of service at the counter. I was greeted when I approached to browse the menu but wasn't really offered any assistance with the menu. I was also not asked about my table number, so I ended up going back to inquire, since I saw the robot cat delivering the food and thought, "how will they know about my table? they didn't ask me about my table number when I paid". With their system, it should be very natural that the cashier is the one to inquire about where you're sitting so that the food can be delivered accordingly. Concurrent with their food court style, the food comes in disposal containers, with wooden cutlery and napkins, on trays (which you then return to the counter after your meal). This is nice for sanitary reasons but is a little wasteful. Portions were quite good. We got two of our don in regular size which were perfect for one person, and another in a large. I felt there was a good amount of protein to rice ratio, hence you get a little of everything in every bite. I really enjoyed the Gyu Don with cheese and the unagi was nice too. The fried squid was also a good size for the price and the breading was quite unique, very delicious and would get again. This came with a size sauce, similar to mayo for dipping. Our bill came to a total of $50 for two regular don, one large don, and one fried squid. Though don tends to be quite pricey, I felt like it was kind of expensive since it lacked the experience aspect (e.g. maybe if the seating was more restaurant-style and food was served in dinnerware, I'd feel more justified about the price).

Came here with some friends for the omakase special meal…read more Such a lovely overall standard omakase experience and meal. The highlight for me was probably the set of four starter appetizers, they were flavourful, delicately prepared and perfect way to start the meal. I liked the slightly pickled dish with cucumbers the best. We also had sushi prepared with fresh seafood. The rice was probably my favorite compared to other places I've been. It was perfectly seasoned rice, warm and cooked to have just the right texture, not overcooked and not undercooked. The rice held up well when picked up by hand and complemented the flavours of the fish. Finished the meal with a matcha flavored pudding flan type dessert which had deep matcha flavours. If you're a fan of matcha, you'd probably enjoy it too. All in all, the meal was enjoyable, the torched tuna sushi was probably my favorite sushi of the set and my least favorite was the egg/eel, I was expecting a sweet egg at the end so it unexpected.

The restaurant is super quiet and they offer great quality of food with great service, and the price is expensive if you choose to order sukiyaki set (expect $80+ per person). You can choose between sushi sets at different price level or sukiyaki from the menu. This suits the need of our group given some people prefer sushi but some couldn't eat raw food. They also offer a couple of limited appetizer dishes such as tempuras and unagi don. If you booked the sukiyaki table and want to order sushi, you need to call them in advance to notify which sushi sets you want. We tried the sashimi and sushi courses at $55, which included miso soup, 5 pieces of sashimi, 8 pieces of sushi (squid, toros, salmon, scallop etc.), handroll and matcha or black sesame icecream at your choice. The sushi is smaller than average, suitable for small eaters. The course is totally worth the money. I love every piece of sashimi and my favourite sushi include the scallop and the squid. Everything was super fresh. The dessert was also having the perfect sweetness level for me. In addition, we also tried the sukiyaki for two ($110), which includes mushrooms, cabbages, great quality of Angus beef, yummy tofu and udon. Again, all the material was with great quality and super fresh. I especially liked the sweet sukiyaki soup, the tofu and the udon. We also ordered some shareable dishes including chawanmushi, unagi don and cod. Cod was cooked to perfect (soft and flavourful), and unagi don had quite decent portion. It would be better if the unagi could be softer from my personal opinion. Chawanmushi was mediocre. Overall, I strongly recommend this restaurant to fan of Japanese cuisine. It meets different people's needs by offering both cooked and raw food options, and the sushi set definitely has great value for money.

Ordered tempura vegetables and shrimp with 6 pieces total was only around $9. This tempura tasted truly delicious compared to other pricier restaurants! They were very accommodating with changing spicy salmon roll to dynamite roll in the dinner sushi sets for me since I don't eat spicy food. I would love to try their signature rolls next time to see if they're the same. I would come here again for lunch and check them out. -1 star because: The sushi to rice ratio is a little too much so I had to take some off unfortunately.
