This evening I had to make an unexpected change of venues as the venue we had planned to go this evening for social group weekly meeting of about 30 people unexpectedly closed for the evening. I started to panic knowing the group would be coming from all parts of Boise and they would not know before trying to arrive there that it was closed. Well Kona Grill and the Manager Alexis came to the rescue I walked into Kona, explained the dilemma and without hesitation Alexis said I think we can accommodate our group. And accommodate us they did. I have to give a big, big, BIG shout out to Patrick and Trevor. They were masterful as our servers. The orders were taken quickly and brought out in a very timely way. Big groups I know can be taunted but Patrick and Trevor rode to the occasion. They were efficient, caring and totally in command all evening in taking and bringing out the orders and never complaining. Both were very pleasant, Professional and right there if we needed anything. Another awful experience. Great service, Annie did the best she could with the hand she was dealt. The kitchen and management are a joke. It took 45 minutes to get a kids meal out, appetizer didn't come out until after most of the entrees did, and as much as our server tried to hurry our meals up (watched her go back numerous times), nothing worked. How this place is still open is beyond me. I have finally had enough, and will not be back. Hopefully, some other restaurant comes in and kills it, great location. Don't waste your time or money. My sister has been telling me how amazing the Monday Happy hour days are so we decided to go... now mind you, the last time I came this was an amazing experience... this time not so much. The happy hour menu comes with a set of items that range from 3-9 dollars. The avocado egg rolls are 9 dollars. You get one. Just one. One egg roll cut in half. NINE dollars!! We ordered the potstickers, you get three for NINE dollars, that's three dollars per potsticker... we ordered the macadamia nut chicken which was $6 and was the largest portion, which consisted of overly cooked chicken breast that if I had to guess was cut in half to make it thin, and then cut in half again. It literally flew across my table when I cut into it because of how dry it was. You get an apple scoop worth of mashed potatoes with it. I can't even begin to tell you how disappointed I was with this visit compared to last. Our server was nice, she was new... when I asked about the egg rolls she raved about how good they are but didn't mention that you get only one. Had she we would have ordered something else. I left hungry and annoyed that we just spent 60 dollars for food that was over priced and over cooked. Writing this review is just getting me more annoyed. If you are going to order from that menu the watermelon margarita which was also 9 dollars was the best "value" and was tasty. Beyond that, the music was loud and the inside was empty. I called to get chicken tenders and fries for my 3 year old. My son has allergies and we don't order from fast food restaurants because of hidden additives. The woman on the phone who turned out was from a call center that I cannot make an order for my child over the phone. If I go in person I can get takeout for my son from the kids menu. I specified what I wanted for my son. When we arrived there I was told I cannot get takeout from my son, only from the adult menu. It's their store policy. I asked if they have breaded chicken on the adult menu. They have macadamia nut chicken. My son is allergic to nuts, and other things, especially soy. She also offered satay chicken which we tried a few times and he gets an upset stomach from and doesn't like. So went there for nothing. I asked if the woman who I talked to didn't know there store policies? She said she doesn't even know here. Went there for nothing! 2 stars only for the ambience, otherwise this dining experience was a huge disappointment which warrants 3 stars off. 1. Took 15 min for someone to greet our table. 2. Server was difficult to communicate with and missed putting in our appetizer and we had to ask three times for an order of deviled eggs. 3. Mimosa took 15 min to get, was half full and all orange juice, while the two tables next to us got their's speedy and the mimosa ratio looked good--maybe I got the drip of the last pour of the champagne and they were too lazy to open a new bottle to make it correctly. 4. The food was subpar and the jambalaya looked like an appetizer portion and had no shrimp as advertised. Salad was soggy. 5. The waitress never brought my second "bottomless" mimosa, so I basically spent $19 on a half glass of orange juice--rip off. 6. They charge $2.99 for the kids to play the digital game, yet did not notify of this prior. So definitely not like Olive Garden. While dining, 2 other tables got up and walked out. Really good place. We were seated quickly on a BUSY Saturday night....table of 7. Drinks came out quickly and the chicken wing appetizer was delicious. On this visit, we came for Happy Hour, they have great HH food prices and I went with the newly added 1/4 lb cheeseburger and fries for just $6! I was afraid it'd be overcooked, but it came out just perfect. My friend had the chicken potstickers with a very yummy sauce. Service from Cole was great today, although we've had poor service here before. They have some HH drink specials too. My friend had a Coors Light draft for $3! My "well" drink however was $10 which was surprising since it was a well, it was small AND it was during HH. I have never paid $10 for a well drink, ever. The only edible appetizer was the potstickers but they looked like the ones you get from the dollar store food section. They microwaved them. The food was bland. How do you make sushi taste bad? I ordered the Asian salad with shrimp. They proceeded to plate me an Asian salad kit from the grocery store, with boiled shrimp on top. Some advice. Freshly chop your ingredients, make a homemade dressing to throw on top, and marinate your shrimp and throw those things on the grill! Not hard! I'm from California, I know good Asian food this is not it. The waitress was ok, I asked for an iced coffee. She poured me coffee, threw some ice and it, and put it on my table. Didn't bother asking if I needed creamer. The coffee was warm. Thankfully for her, I like my coffee black. Ambiance was ok, the music was loud and I had to raise my voice to speak to my coworkers. Also saw some Karens, in republican makeup making a fuss about no kids menus. (Mother's Day weekend) If you're ok with bland food and grumpy old ladies, go here. This is a place to take your grandparents as their tastebuds are deteriorated. Had dinner here Sunday evening at 6pm. We walked in and were seated right away. Service was attentive and checked in regularly to see if we needed anything. It's a beautiful space and if you sit in the bar area you can see the beautiful fountain in the courtyard. I ordered the lemon garlic penne with shrimp and my friend ordered the same with chicken. I told him we were at a seafood place and he should have ordered it with shrimp. After I gave him a piece of shrimp, he agreed. After dinner, I switched over to the bar. The bartender was nice. I ordered an espresso martini, of course and waited for another friend to join me. My friend wanted a red wine and had two glasses. The manager came to ask how things were and if we needed anything, we didn't and it was going great. I told him I was visiting from Phoenix, Arizona and he mentioned that he moved here about a year ago from there and liked it here. This review is solely for Jodi, my bartender. She is amazing and very attentive. We only go to Kona when she is working the well. She makes our visits fun and we're always looking to come back. The vibe is very different when she isn't there. This location has had lots of turnover, but she's always been the main event. Happy Hour is the best time to visit although recently the selections have decreased and the portions are smaller. I realize this this is a prime location. however, they should be able to do better so they can compete with other nearby restaurants. My wife went to Kona tonight and we usually have good experiences. Tonight she decided to go with a friend and my wife was ignored the entire time. Her friend got a free drink but my wife did not. Her friend ordered her food and then he turned around and walked away with out taking my wife's order. It took him an extra 30 minutes to actually come and take her order. It as $18 not including the tip for a single! Besides the copper cup they did nothing to make it worth the price. No muddled ginger, no fresh mint or lime. Just vodka and ginger beer. For dinner I had the Sea Bass fish and chips. That was disappointing. Only three small medallions of fish. The steak fries were not cooked throughly or even seasoned.
