We discovered the restaurant this year. Better late than never! Since our first visit for lunch, we have continued to come back for more lunches whenever possible, and we've recently tried dinner as well. We're so glad we found this new place, as not many traditional Japanese restaurants run by real Japanese sushi chefs are around these days. Most of the chefs we know decided to retire. We were served by Mai and Myrei before. They're lovely and trained well. We ordered an oyster appetizer, which we thoroughly enjoyed. I also loved the chirashi so I have had that a few times already. The sushi set was also very delicious. Everything was fresh and cut nicely to perfection. It takes a skilled sushi chef to cut the fish correctly, maintaining the fish's freshness. After Takesushi closed, we decided to wander into this new spot. I had never tried this restaurant for lunch. There were hot and cold lunch specials, some with noodles, others with raw fish, and also comes with hot miso soup or salad. I ordered the sashimi deluxe, and the sashimi tasted fresh. I enjoyed the presentation and the cute plates. The interior decor as in the walls were minimal and grey. There is a gap in the day where the restaurant closes. There are alcoholic options and also some non-alcoholic beverages as well. I found our waiter helpful and patient. I would definitely return to try it again. read more

Sometimes I want to treat myself to some good sushi, but don't feel like splurging on omakase. Kondo hits the spot for that! I usually go early in the evening -- around 5:30p or so -- because unless you have a reservation, you'll be waiting for a table by 7:00p. If you're lucky enough to sit at the counter, you'll get to see them prepare the sushi, which is mesmerizing on its own! The service is quick and polite, and the food is excellent: order more fish, less rice. It's a very nice place. We got a sashimi sushi combo which cost 48 dollars. It came with a tuna roll and 6 different pieces of sashimi. There was also an assortment of fish on the side as well. Our selection came with miso soup. We didn't like the soup. In fact the miso separated from the broth abd the tofu was cold for some strange reason. We also ordered yhe shrimp shumai andvit came with three pieces. It was delicious. Our sashimi and sushi was okay. It wasn't the best because it wasn't the freshest. We would come back but stick to the appetizers and pick our own rolls. Service was okay. The place is busy though and many people seemed to know what to order. What a neighborhood gem! My friend had been recommending Kondo to me for a while and I finally got a chance to enjoy it this week. The place is cute with a great bar area for solo dining or to just enjoy watching the art of sushi making. The staff was very attentive and gracious, making sure that we were well taken care of throughout our meal. There aren't high chairs available here, but we made do without and the staff was all really lovely with my daughter and didn't seem to mind my mother in law standing close to the bar with her to showing her the process. The food was excellent. They had a special fish and chips appetizer on the menu that was the perfect portion for my 15 month old. We also ordered the shrimp and veggie tempura, a braised eggplant dish that's served cold, salmon crudo with jalapeno, and a few rolls. After many years, I returned to Kondo on a Friday night for dinner. What a disappointment. Yes, the restaurant was packed. Always a good sign. A couple in front of us got seated fairly quickly. The hostess, who needs a lesson in customer service, quickly informed me that it would be at least 30 minutes and kept insisting I give her my cell phone number when a table became available. First, I was waiting for my husband to join and second I don't live around the corner so I was happy to wait. In 10 minutes I noticed a table was given their check. Ah, I thought , "great!". I also noticed one table that although was one for 4 persons only had 2 people sitting there. When the hostess came back to again pressure me for leaving my cell phone #, I pointed out said table and she dismissed it as being full. My husband arrives and she returns once again saying they are full and pressing me to leave my #. We then notice a 2nd table in clear sight which although is for 4 persons can clearly accommodate another 2 (us). Her response was vehement that this table is is for 4 people. But, we pointed there is room for another 2. She replied that they may not want to sit with people. WTF! Is it up to them or the restaurant to maximize profit and seat another 2 people. It was as if we were lepars! Finally I pointed that the table in front of us was becoming available and she said it was already reserved! For who??? No one else was waiting. I would NEVER EVER go to Kondo again. Rude, inefficient, and clearly in experienced staff with no consideration or clue about customer service. Never in my life have I ever experienced such service. Furthermore based on the reviews already posted and having had time to look at the menu, there is nothing special about their food whatsoever. I've been to Kondo many times over the years ever since my Japanese friend recommended it in Astoria area. Recently we came back for dinner after over 2 years gap since pandemic and I was glad that the sushi/sashimi are still good as I remember. The restaurant is not too big, the quiet and soothing environment makes it really comfortable to dine here. There are seatings at the sushi bar, and table seatings are space out even before pandemics, The servers at Kondo are always kind and polite. The quality of the raw fish are fresh and pretty good at their price point compared to several others Japanese restaurants in Astoria/LIC area. Cute Japanese restaurant tucked in Astoria! This place is easily missed because of the lack of decor or window display. They tables are further inside the restaurant. Not sure if we were hungry or if we just wanted to order everything on the menu. (Not pictured) Clam in a sake broth. This was on the special menu and they ran out of clams so they only gave and charged us for a half portion. 10/10 would recommend you to get it if it's on the menu! The clams were sweet, CLEAN! Not sandy at all. Everything was amazing EXCEPT for the fried squid leg salad. I love squid so we decided to try it out... the squid was fine and tender but the salad was lacking. My favorite spot for sushi in Astoria! I love the staff here, very nice and accommodating. Kondo is perfect for date night. If you want a nice sampler, the Sushi Regular is perfect. My boyfriend likes to get the Sushi Delux, it's a little more filling and has a few more specialty pieces. They have delicious miso soup as well. I've been to Kondo several times and their food and service is consistently top notch. Their staff is the Japanese kind of polite (which means super), and their menu is very traditional. They import their fish from Japan, and everything is fresh and delicious. This is hands down one of my favorite Japanese restaurants in Astoria. I've been coming to Kondo for nearly 4 years, both lunch and dinner. Every single time it has been phenomenal. You will not find fresher and better fish anywhere else in the city (I've gone nearly everywhere to try). Not to mention, the fish is not extortionately-priced like many places in Manhattan. This is a proper Japanese-owned Japanese restaurant. Don't let the fact that the restaurant is comfortably seated in Astoria fool you that it is any less good, as compared to the 'fancy' spots in the city. I travel here frequently from Manhattan because of how good it is. If you know sushi, then you can appreciate the way Kondo san prepares the fish. I recommend ordering either sushi or sashimi deluxe for dinner. I've never tasted better scallop in my life, the uni is mouthwatering, and sweet shrimp fantastic. For appetizers, order hamachi kama, carpaccio, and shishamo. And of course, kara age is as good as any izakaya. Try the otokoyama sake as well. Annin tofu is a good way to end the meal. I truly appreciate the way Kondo is run, as a cozy family-owned Japanese establishment. If you haven't been here, please go. Paid 20$ for the 5 piece medium fatty tuna and about 5$ a piece for the sushi ala cart The good: the sweet shrimp was very good, just the right consistency and the fried head is always a nice touch. The salmon was also very fatty and delicious. The medium fatty tuna was the right texture and the flavor was okay. The bad: the Spanish mackerel had a big heap of ginger on it that over powered the fish. The octopus was very chewy, I spent a good minute chewing on it. The Terrible: they left the silver skin in on the medium fatty tuna! This made me have to either dig it out or chew into it and pick it out of my mouth every time. I did bring it to the wait staffs attention right away and expected they bring me a new set of fish but instead they said that sometimes it comes like that. Ruined what would have been a good dish. For a 40$ meal (+tip and tax) this was not worth the experience. read more

Always a great meal at Kondo. We made reservations for four people and they were ready to accommodate us once we arrived. For appetizers, we ordered the blue fin tuna ($20/5 pieces) and the squid sashimi (6 pieces). Each person in our group ordered their own sushi meal. No family style for us tonight, haha. For my entree, I ordered the assorted sashimi (20 pieces) with comes with a bowl of sushi rice. It consisted of 2 pieces of king salmon, squid, salmon roe, snapper, eel, scallop, yellowtail, amberjack, tuna, and ebi. I love how this sushi spot uses freshly grated wasabi and not the fake, artificial one. We also ordered a scallion handroll and two green tea parfaits. The 'F' Squad and I landed here for dinner one evening. I opt for sushi rolls while they went for the sushi deluxe. I got the Toro Scallion, Yellowtail Scallion, and the Scallop Roll. Overall, they were all really fresh and delicious! Both the Toro Scallion and Yellowtail Scallion were really good as always. Toro was super light and scallions adds a nice finishing touch to it. Full upfront disclosure: I didn't eat at this establishment, but instead had a terrible interaction with the owner of the restaurant. My review and rating are based on that in full, and not on the food served. On this sunny warm late November day, my wife, two kids and I were waiting outside the hair salon next to Kondo for my appointment time slot. You're not allowed to hang out inside until appointment time, so we were killing time on the sidewalk. My wife had picked up a bagel from the bagel shop across the street, and since she recently pulled a back muscle, opted to sit on the side of Kondo's empty-at-the-time street side seating area. It was around noon, there were no tables or chairs set out, no other diners. Just the wooden structure, of which she sat on the right side by the edge. My 5 year old sat next to her while my younger kid sat in the stroller that I stood by. Next thing we know, the owner storms out of the restaurant and starts berating us for sitting on the wooden structure. We said calmly, "sure ok, we'll move not a problem." As I went to help my wife stand up, my 5 year old, being an inquisitive 5 year old, said to the owner, "why do we have to move?" This *set him off*. He starts yelling about how we have no business sitting there and how he spent a ton of money to build it. I told him he doesn't have to be rude, we were in no way arguing with him, and were moving away. He points at, and I can't be more clear about this, MY FIVE YEAR OLD, and yells "SHE IS QUESTIONING ME!! (to her) Don't ask me WHY!" At that point, I told him, "WOW, don't you dare talk to my daughter. She doesn't understand why we are being told to leave, so she is asking a simple question to you. She is FIVE." This guy was so unbelievably inconsiderate and aggressive. Listen, I get it. It's a pandemic. We're all stressed out and doing what we can to get through each day. But when you see a family of four, 3 of which were masked while one wasn't to eat a bagel, sitting on the edge of an empty set up, there is no reason to behave this way. Especially since we had no problem moving away when told to. All he had to say was "hey guys, sorry we can't have anyone sitting there that's not eating at this restaurant." I will never try this place if I'm craving Japanese. If that's the way the owner is going to treat people? Not a chance. read more

Wow! The sushi here is deliciously fresh. So I've had some amazing $200+ sushi before. Nothing has competed to it yet, but for the price Kondo offers their sushi and sashimi they come very close! After each bite I kept saying 'wow'. You can tell they are truly trained with sushi by the cut of each sushi and the construction and flavors of the sashimi. They also have real authentic wasabi--not horseradish. I ordered the $40 sushi, sashimi, and spicy tuna roll. Again, wow. so fresh. So good! Each cut was amazing. The oil in some of the more fattier pieces were so fresh. For the pricepoint, you will get some of the best sushi in NYC at Kondo. read more
