The restaurant is a gem in Astoria. Despite all the years living in Manhattan and having great authentic Japanese food around - this place is still on the top of my favorite places. They have the freshest raw fish, and the best Japanese dessert (not just any green tea ice cream). A good selection of delicious sake too. The quality of sushi is excellent especially for the price. Despite of good reviews this place is usually empty, and we figured it out the reasons ourselves. Both interior and employees give you very strange, unwelcoming feelings. Our waitress was friendly enough when she came to our table, but when they were not serving they chat among themselves constantly like high school girls. The owner sushi chef, instead of reminding them that they are at work, often join their conversations in Japanese and they were the loudest party in the whole restaurant. They made us feel like uninvited guests in a private home. We will not go back. read more

Yummie! Kondo sushi was really good. Me and my boyfriend did the omakase, which was about $50 per person. The sushi was so fresh and so delish! some of the fish came from japan. Loved it!!! This isn't just another random sushi place in NYC. The sushi here is truly to DIE for! Fresh sushi, fresh fish, fresh everything. Seems like the chefs take their time making/preparing every single piece of sushi/roll/etc. We had the clams in butter-miso sauce for our appetizer (I belive this was on the specials menu) and we each had the Sushi combo platter, which comes with 1 spicy tuna roll (6 rolls) and 8 pieces of sushi (assorted). The best sushis were the eel and fluke!!! The eel was crazy flavorful! And the fluke sushi came with a liiiittttle hint of yuzu. It was surprising to find a bit of citrus-y yuzu flavor pop out from the sushi! When the waitress came to take our order for dessert, we ordered 2 more pieces of fluke sushi instead. So good! I would not dare to say the best in Queens (who knows?), but definitely the best in Astoria/LIC. This not Taiwanese, not Korean, not Chinese, but most definitely Japanese and it shows. The restaurant shares its connections with its predecessor in the space, Linn, but extensive redecoration has opened it up, and lightened the atmosphere. The food, both the kitchen specials and the sushi is as good a Linn at its best. The wine and sake lists are short, but well-chosen; the beers are perhaps more to a Japanese taste than mine. This is not, however, a place for those whose criteria are portion size and cheapness. Since those are not my criteria, I expect to be back here regularly. read more

I've tried almost all the reputable sushi places here in Astoria and most of them are very americanized. Kondo's the only sushi place that stick to tradition. The specials with seasonal fish is fantastic addition. The sushi deluxe was very good and unlike most sushi places that only has the standard, it had some of the more expensive seafood such as medium fatty tuna, amaebi etc. My only complaint is for the price of sushi deluxe (over $35) I think they can prove more pieces. read more

My fiancé and I started coming here shortly after we moved to Astoria, and we have had nothing but awesome experiences! The fatty tuna and king salmon are our favorite, and they have some delicious sake too. The sushi melts in your mouth and the rest of their food is delicious as well. Our favorite thing to do is sit at the sushi bar - it's fun to watch them make the sushi, and the chefs are always very friendly and conversational. They always treat us like they know us (they probably do by now) and are just all around really nice people. The place is clean, has great atmosphere and gets really crowded, especially on the weekends, which is a testament to how much people love it! One of the best experiences was on our anniversary - we were sitting at the sushi bar and were the last couple of people in the restaurant. All of the staff were talking to each other. They quickly realized that we were still there and apologized for not including us in their conversation, explained what they were talking about and then we had a great conversation with them and ended up being the last people to leave! I honestly wasn't offended that they weren't talking to us originally and didn't expect them to, but it did mean a lot that they didn't want to make us feel uncomfortable or ignored. So many restaurants in New York want to just rush you out the door, and it really felt like they were glad we were there and wanted to get to know us. We have tried pretty much every sushi restaurant in Astoria (we love sushi) and this is definitely one of the best in terms of food and service!! read more

This is a really excellent addition to the Astoria sushi scene. I had the regular sushi combo (8 pieces and 1 spicy tuna roll) and I was blown away by their salmon and eel. Their shrimp dumplings are not worth the price, but they have excellent quality fish and service. The staff was very attentive and we were seated right away. It's on the pricier side for the neighborhood, but well worth it. It's definitely my new favorite place to go for sushi in Astoria. read more

Firstly, this is a $$$ since the portion sizes are far too small. The service was good and the shishito peppers app was delicious. But the duck was tasteless and the rolls looked more beaten than supermarket sushi. Unfortunately, I think I could have matched the skill in the way the sashimi was cut and presented. For a Thursday night, service was extremely slow. Kondo, the sushi chef and only sushi chef that night, was working at light speed to catch up on all the orders. Unfortunately, our food took over 45 minutes to arrive and we received a portion of edamame on house. Although we were not very happy about the pace of service, we did enjoy the high quality fish. I've been there a few times and this is really an excellent sushi restaurant. The chef prepares fish and rice just right every time. The hot food and appetizers are cooked perfectly. Seasonal and new items are always great, too. The price is very reasonable, you'd pay 20-30% more in Manhattan for less food. Just came here for lunch yesterday and it was very good :) i had Chirashi lunch w/ miso soup for $15, my husband had curry Udon lunch with inari sushi in the side comes with small salad for $12. for authentic Japanese lunch i think the price is good for what we had. It seems like lunch menus change day to day (although i'm sure some are staple like chirashi, sashimi, sushi lunch) so i'm looking forward to the next time , love to try something different. oh, we also had shishito tempura which stayed crispy till the end! very good as well :) i'll be returning very soon for sure! read more

Definitely the best sushi spot in Astoria. I usually go to Ditmars for Japanese food in Astoria but this is now my new go to spot. The fish is obviously very fresh and chosen with care. You can see the owner making the sushi in the back of the restaurant and he does so with a lot of precision. Everything tasted authentic and flavorful. I haven't had better sushi in Astoria. Watawa and Pink Nori are great spots to grab some rolls, but the fish at Kondo is significantly better. For $20 you get 8 pieces of nigiri and a roll, which while pricier than some Astoria spots is well worth it when factoring in the quality. The eel is the best I have had. The fish melts in your mouth. I can't wait to go back for more. It is also impressive to watch the head chef prepare every piece of fish himself. The is by far, the freshest and most authentic sushi place I have been in. Customer service is always great. You get what you pay for, the price may be slightly higher than other Chinese run sushi places in the area and portions is on the smaller size but they make it up in quality!! No highchair for kids unfortunately so I have to let my toddler sit on the booth. I would be able to dine here for often with my family if they had it, else it is mostly take out. read more

This is an awesome sushi spot on Broadway in Astoria. Clean interior with prompt service. Delicious sushi rolls (tried spicy tuna, spicy salmon) and pork dumplings. Dinner for two = $18. Will definitely be stopping by here again soon! read more

The uni was fresh and the sweet shrimp is amazing :) there is a lunch menu and the average price is around 15 dollars so it's more than affordable. Also I got the fried chicken tartar but would recommend getting the normal fried chicken, it's $2 dollars cheaper and the tartar sauce was too heavy. read more

Shin-San took the place over recently, changed the name and shortened the menu. I wish this place luck because they truly do a great job. read more
