6 Star's if they had such a thing!!!!! My buddy and I are only in town for a couple days and this was the first place we stopped for a meal.....LET ME TELL YOU, THIS PLACE SMOKE'N!!!!!! I had the scallops w the grits on the lunch menu, my buddy opted for the fried chicken. Mine came out and there was about 6 scallops all grilled to perfection!!! The grits were great as well! The presentation even kicked ass!!! They had on top it was almost like spinich that they left on the grill too long, it looked burnt. It was SLAMMING!!!! My buddies chicken was perfection. His side's included out of this world collards and Mac n Cheese!!! Each dish was very well proportioned and about half way through the waiter gave us some of their homemade hot sauce, which we both doused on our food. Now it was like a whole other meal!!!! Their hot sauce should be bottled it's so damn good!!!!! Wow!!!! My buddy and I are talking about going back tonight for dinner!!!! Stay tuned..... Okay, sure enough, WE WENT BACK FOR DINNER! I set a new record for myself. I have yet to eat at the same place twice in 1 day, especially when I'm out of town and there's a lot of other places to try!!! Do you get it? This place is that AMAZING!!! I don't know what it is. Maybe it's the homemade salad dressing or hot sauce. Or maybe it's just this place is in a league all of their own. Tonight, my buddy had the scallops this time but they were prepared different from when I had them earlier. Despite growing up and living in Tallahassee for most of my life, I ate my first meal here today and was pleasantly surprised! The interior of the restaurant is small but homey, and the employees are pleasant and courteous. The menu offers a variety of flavors, ranging from seafood to pasta to steaks, but changes every so often to keep fresh. I didn't order any appetizers, but there was complimentary fresh bread and butter. For my main course, I ordered Panned Rainbow Trout with Asparagus and Polenta. The dish originally comes with a caper-raisin-bacon topping, but as I have an aversion to capers, they easily substituted it for a herbed butter. The fish was cooked beautifully, asparagus was a little undercooked but well-seasoned, and the polenta was smooth and flavorful. The butter was a good addition flavor-wise, however the texture would probably be improved with the original topping. (So don't substitute it if you get it!) Overall, it was a pleasant experience with wonderful food at a reasonable price range. Would definitely eat again! read more

KBC hands-down is Tallahassee's best (and our favorite) restaurant, but we don't come as often as we'd like because it's always busy and can get a little warm. But, this evening, it was a delightful 70 degrees out and, despite today's final home football game, everyone's at the downtown Winter Festival and we got here soon after they opened. Seated immediately at a corner table on the patio. Win! Tonight, we went with starters of Conch-Coconut Fritters with Lemon Aioli and Roasted Beets with Gorgonzola Vinaigrette, Quinoa and Spicy Walnuts, followed by entrees of Maine Lobster Pot Pie (for Yankee me) and Blackened Cobia & Grits with Bacon, Mushrooms, Tomato Confit and Fried Green Tomato (for my very Southern wife). This is what makes KBC so great -- outstanding, fresh, farm-to-table, locally sourced food, creatively prepared in a variety of styles with seafood, beef, chicken, duck and vegetarian options. So hard to choose from their impossibly incredible menu. The Conch-Coconut Fritters were wonderful; the lightest I've ever tasted -- like air. I'm guessing due to buttermilk and baking powder in the batter. Really good. We loved the Roasted Beet Salad, with earthy beets from Full Earth Farm, a family-owned farm in nearby Quincy. They topped a perfectly assembled dish. My Lobster Pot Pie was outstanding. Plenty of lobster -- though just tender and succulent claws, no tail meat -- in a delicious white sauce filled with fresh peas and topped with a crispy sheet of puff pastry. I'd order this again in a heartbeat. Lighter than expected. My wife's Blackened Cobia also was fabulous, with a generous portion of perfectly cooked (and very fresh) fish sided by rich, bacony cheese grits and wonderful grape tomato confit, which added a nice sweetness. Layers of flavors. There's a reason KBC is one of Tallahassee's best -- and, according to Florida Trend, one of the top 400 restaurants in Florida. Part of it their casual diner vibe. They fully embrace their slogan, "Eat, drink and talk loud; you're among friends." This is not the place for a quiet, romantic dinner for two-- but it's the perfect place for a truly great and memorable meal. read more

I've visited this restaurant 3 times and everything I've ordered has been excellent! It's a unique establishment in that it is farm-to-table, so the menu rotates with what is available. Don't expect to pick a favorite dish and assume it will be on the menu the next time you visit. It's also important to note that you may make minor changes to dishes due to allergies, but if you are a person who likes to make major changes (I'm not one, but know people who are), this probably won't be the place for you. One of the best dining experience I've had in Tallahassee. The first time I went I had the swordfish which was cooked to perfection. The second time I had a huge arugula salad that was amazing. Both were for my birthday so I got to try two different desserts which is not something I typically do. Every time I go here now I am trying a new dessert they were both that good and let me tell you I am as picky as they come. The first dessert was a play on a smores, which thankfully I have a picture of and the second was a piece of chocolate souffle cake with Vietnamese coffee ice cream and a condensed milk whipped cream! They have a following but their patrons most likely will die soon. And then they will close..... I don't get it. Everyone raves about this place. I really tried to like it. I always leave feeling so underwhelmed when I go there. I'm so distracted by the god-awful beach house "art" and how filthy that ripped up carpet (in a restaurant?!???) seems to be. They should really consider investing in an interior makeover because the mismatched, dilapidated Crayola decor just cheapens it. I could go on but I realize people don't go there for interior inspiration. The food is...okay. I've thought the presentation to be half-assed. This was my second time at Kool Beanz. Even though this place has been around for decades, I never thought to give it a whirl growing up. But now I'm grown and smart and hongry. The first I went it was darn good but I wasn't in yelp mode. This time I was ready. I came at peak lunch time (12pm) and the place was packed. The maitre'd was accommodating and within 10 minutes had us set up with a high chair. I'm no rookie so by the time we were seated I already knew what I and my other dining companions wanted. This wasn't an easy decision as the menu is chock full of dishes ranging from healthy, straight up cheat day, vegetarian, heavily carnivorous and everything in between. The prices are also about half that of the dinner menu. Our waitress was super friendly and attentive and after we gave our orders we starting scoping our neighbors plates in an effort to convince ourselves that we made the right choice. After about an hour we noticed that people who had been seated after us were finishing up their meals. Our server came to our table and was super apologetic but she hadn't given the kitchen our ticket. She told us she would comp our beers and we continued waiting. In total we waited about an hour and a half for our food and then there was a little snafu with our check and she ended comping us more than just the beers. Ok that was tedious so lets talk about food *claps hands *smacks lips. I ordered the veggie burger with house made pickles, beet tzatziki, and sweet potato fries. The veggie burger was fine, it was hefty and sighed under its own weight but it wasn't super special. The pickles were crisp, tangy and delicious. The bun was straight up artisanal: golden brown, light fluffy center, held up nicely as it sandwiched a burger with a weight problem. The tzatziki stole the show. It had a perfect tang, bits of beet that provided a substantial but not overpowering flavor and some herbal essences. The sweet potato fries were thick wedges that were perfectly crispy on the outside and like sweet potato pudding in the center. Impressive. I would definitely come back here and while a two hour lunch is not a sustainable practice, our waitress definitely compensated by appropriately compensating. read more

Wow wow WOW! What a gem! I recently visited Kool Beanz while in Tallahassee for my first time ever and was not disappointed. This funky spot came well recommended by friends who live in the area, so my partner and I decided to give it a shot for my birthday dinner and it was the best choice we could have made. We arrived and out our name down for a table on a busy Saturday and only waited for about 10 minutes for the two of us. Our server was great and very attentive. Although we didn't ask for her recommendation she did say that we had likely picked her two favorite dishes on the menu so we were glad we picked well! We stated with the crab cakes and they were absolutely divine, probably some of the best I've ever had in my life, and even if my entree was bad I'd still give this place 5 stars at that point because they were THAT GOOD. Up next, we both went for the seared scallops and again were not disappointed. They were perfectly done, melted like butter in the mouth and beautifully seasoned. I was in heaven. Should I ever return to Tallahassee I will be sure to make Kool Beanz a must on my list of places to go. The service was excellent, the decor was fun and funky and the food was out of this world!!
