My first time here-- now I know why it's my mom's favorite restaurant. The colorful animal paintings put me in a good mood immediately. Friendly, relaxed service that did't feel rushed but was still attentive. Eclectic menu. I had the fried oysters with cheese grits - it was a starter but was fine as a meal for me. My mom had a pepper steak that she couldn't begin to finish- took it home and it will probably feed her all weekend. Our friend had a crusted chicken that she loved. Shared a coconut meringue cake that looked as good as it tasted. Hope to go back next time I'm in Tallahassee. Bravo! read more

We loved this place. The food was creative and yummy. The appetizers looked so good we just got a bunch of them including Frog Legs, Pierogis, Duck Tostados and Lamb Patties. My favorite was the Duck Tostados which had a great drizzle on it and tons of duck. But the best part is that the people are so fun and helpful. We left the restaurant with a full list of things to do in Tallahassee from Suzanna with additions from several other people at Kool Beanz. I'd love to try more dishes but Tallahassee is a long way from San Francisco. read more

My husband and I stopped by this place on our way back from our honeymoon. I overuse the phrase 'cool beans' so I thought it was awesome. The food was very fresh and creative. Menu consists of mostly seafood. Service was okay, they do not make changes to any dishes though. Therefore it is a hard place to eat if you have any food allergies, such as a gluten allergy. Overall good experience, but not the best restaurant in Tallahassee. read more

For my birthday and most celebratory dinners, I choose Kool Beans. But my last visit has left me awfully disappointed. We always order two appetizers, two entrees, and sometimes a dessert. Our two appetizers were incredible, truly outstanding. Alex's flank steak entree was pretty good, though the steak could have had a thinner cut and the mashed potatoes could have been less lumpy and had more flavor. Since it was my birthday we decided to splurge and get a swordfish entree with blue crab claws and a delicious slice of ciabatta to soak up the yummy sauce everything was in. I was enjoying my meal until I cut into the center of my swordfish and it was raw and cold in the middle. I sent it back and instead of getting a new piece of fish I got the same broken pieces and considerably less sauce. Also, my ciabatta bread was now burned on the bottom, which leads me to believe the whole thing was just put in the microwave. There was about $8 taken off my bill, but I really just wanted a perfect dinner on my birthday. I normally love Kool Beans, it was my favorite restaurant in Tallahassee, but for my special occasion I may go somewhere that cares more for their patrons. read more

Best of the best! Doesn't try to be fancy, there is a very limited wine and beer list, and menus are given to you on a clipboard, but the food is outstanding. Tip. Sit at the counter and watch your meal take shape. It's a few miles south of the Interstate and well worth the detour. It was so good we had to stop there again when driving through Tallahassee a week later. One note of caution, if you like bland food then stay away. These dishes are full of spices. I absolutely love this place. Not the best atmosphere in the world, but my goodness the food is always incredible. A great variety on the menu and it is always changing as it is FRESH. The burger is always good and if you find yourself there on a Sunday for brunch get the cornbread with chorizo sausage gravy and poached egg, you won't be dissapointed! read more

If you want to impress someone visiting Tallahassee this is it! Casual, fun , divine food. I can't believe how much diverse food the chefs turn out of their postage-stamp kitchen. If you're alone, sit at the counter and be amazed at the kitchen choreography. I do think bread & butter ought to be included with entrees but that's just a quibble. If you identify as a foodie then you can't pass this place up. My favorite restaurant in town. The food is always really interesting and I am always surprised how well the flavors meld together. I like to come here to get inspiration for my own cooking at home. I think the best way to describe it is as a bright 90's fusion of flavors. Was passing through town and asked my wife to look up a good place to eat and I was very very happy with her choice. By the way- prices were really reasonable for the amount of food provided. This place has great food, a cool atmosphere and makes you feel adventurous. Everything that we ordered was something that you wouldn't normally see on a menu. You wouldn't think the flavors would go together, but our food was delicious! Not to mention their nice staff. Absolute favorite restaurant in town! Great southern food, rotating menu. Only serve beer and wine but our servers have usually been pretty spot-on with the wine recommendations. Often on a wait during the peak dinner hours, but we have sat up at the bar for dinner many times and enjoyed the open kitchen view.
