I grew up with kopps, it's a Wisconsin staple. If you've never had it, do try it. If you live in the area and go on a regular basis, stop. Kopps is amazing, cool and extra creamy. It's creamy because it has a high fat content. 18 grams of fat for 1 scoop of vanilla or chocolate. No one should be eating 18 grams of fat per serving. I wish Kopps would do the general population a favor for health reasons and post nutritional facts so people make better food decisions. read more

I started going to Kopp's 50 years ago when it was on Lisbon Ave and have never had a complaint until now. My wife and I stopped yesterday at the Brookfield store and I was very unhappy with the quality. First the french fries were coated with something like maybe a thin batter and they were not good. The cheeseburger was dry and had some crunchy bits on it, and the bun was dry and stale and overpowered the sandwich. The bun seemed like it was from the day old rack. I had a cheeseburger at the Kopp's in Greenfield about a month ago and it was fine, so I really don't know what the story is in Brookfield. Lastly, my wife had her custard order made up wrong and had to have it fixed. I don't take these reviews lightly, and wish this one could have been better. read more

You should not take someone that has not ever been fishing on a fishing trip in Alaska. On nearly every cast you are likely to catch trophy-sized fish. This of course is much different than even the best fishing trips in the lower 48 - if all you had ever known is what fishing is like in Alaska you probably skip fishing altogether after leaving because that bar has been set at a height unachievable in most places in the contiguous US. I can only blame my parents for introducing me to Kopps as a child and subsequently exposing me to butter burgers and custard through my 18th year. That same year I left Wisconsin and have been all over Europe, Northern Africa, Central America and at least half the US. I have never found a butter burger nor custard that compares. My fav is a butter burger with fried onions best to split with someone to leave room for second fav which is their banana split. Kopp's Frozen Custard! The first thought that came to mind as I entered the bustling establishment was, geez, Wisconsinites love their custard. This place was packed with a queue at least 15 people deep and it was reaching to 10pm hour. What's the big deal? I sceptically thought as I waited to place my order. So I stepped up to the counter, ordered the Kopp's Special (4 Scoops of custard in a large cup, Pineapple, raspberry, strawberry,Topped with hot fudge, pecans, bananas and a cherry) and waited anxiously but not prepared for what I would call the best soft serve experience I've ever had in my life. This is not to be confused with Soft Serve Ice Cream, Frozen Yogurt, or Gelato. Kopp's frozen custard is in a league of its own. Although the base caloric ingredients (Egg, Heavy Cream, Sugar) would throw any point counting person into a state of insanity, it's a trip down the fat-full aisle well worth taking and revisiting. Visiting Kopp's is a must for out-of-towners. You don't really understand what frozen custard is until you try Kopp's. The sundaes (on vanilla custard) are the best, IMO. Nice turtle sundae, great strawberry sundae. Sadly, they don't have sugar cones (regular cones and waffle, but no old-school sugar cones- bummer!). I like how it's all open so you can see the chefs cooking your food or the counter staff making your sundae. Kopp's is famous for burgers and has great onion rings. There is seating (unlike the Greenfield location) but the seating is uncomfortable and it's too cold in there (year round, strangely) and usually really dirty and sticky, so I recommend take-out or sitting outside if the weather's nice. read more

Even when Kopps is (slightly) bad, it's so, so, so damn good, so the worst I can ever give it is 4 stars. Getting into the parking lot here is always an exercise in patience and reflexes. The lots not laid out great for the strip mall behind it, so just getting near Kopps can be bad. Then there are no stall lines left in the actual Kopps lot, so parking is always wonky. Plus there's the inevitable child darting out into traffic. My advice - pull into the first spot you see in the strip mall lot and walk in. It's likely that I'd put Kopps Cookies n Cream on my death row, last meal list. I've had a long, passionate affair with it. It's the "ice cream" by which all other iterations are judged. So I was super-disappointed when we were there the other night and took home a quart that had approximately three crushed cookies in it. Ya'll know that's not how Kopp's usually rolls, but this wasn't packed in the middle of a rush. This was pre-packed and whoever was doing so should have been more up on putting the additions in the mix. What this location has above the other two is an abundance of seating, both inside and out. There's always a ton of kids working and I've always had the shortest waits for my food here. I love this location - it's the most convenient for me and on a summer night, it's so nice to sit and have your meal. But they're on thin ice after this cookies n cream experience and I'll be on the lookout for future cookie related incidents! read more

When I first moved to Milwaukee I ate here everyday for a month and that is no lie. First you have delicious burgers. Made to order with tons of great toppings. If burgers aren't your thing try the buffalo chicken sandwich. Nicely spiced, topped with blue cheese and celery. Oh wait, you're a vegetarian? There were mainly benches everywhere with no real tables around. This was a bit of an annoyance because having any frozen treat means it can melt, and the dish can become sticky, which is never fun. Despite the hefty calorie count, I find it next to impossible to depart Milwaukee without making a pit stop at Kopp Custard Stand in Brookfield for butterscotch malt and an order of onion rings. While the wait for the food always messes with my travel timelines, all is forgiven when I enter onion ring nirvana. Kopps has truly mastered the art of onion ring preparation. They have found that optimal balance of sweet onion flavor and slightly salty batter. They are ALWAYS served piping hot with a heavenly crunch. It's hard to order onion rings from anywhere else since Kopp's has set the onion ring bar so high. The same level of superlatives applies to the butterscotch malts. They are plenty thick, but not so much that you collapse a lung when drinking it through a straw. And there is that great scotchy, scotch, butterscotch flavor without excessive sweetness. It is the perfect foil to those transcendent onion rings. They may or may not have other items on the menu, I really don't know since my order is the same each time I visit. Other than the aforementioned wait, the ordering process is quick and efficient. There is always some tidying up the restrooms or the dining area every time I visit, so they get a gold star for cleanliness. My order was taken at 1:01 (#239). 20 minutes later when numbers in the 260's were being called, I walked up to the young man behind the microphone and showed him my receipt dated 1:01. He didn't say a word and handed it to the prep person and walked away...no attempt to explain or apologize. I followed him to his register and asked what had happened. He stated it must have gotten lost...again no apology or offer to refund my money ($6.30). By this time I had been in there close to 25 minutes and couldn't wait any longer. I told him he could keep the burger and left. I am out $6.30 with nothing to show for it...not even an "I'm terribly sorry, we will rush that for you" Possibly some re-training in customer service is required. I heard about this local chain from my uber driver. Situated across the street from McDonald's, Kopp's seemed like a better choice than the golden arch. Walking in, this fast food place had a vintage feel and a simple burger joint menu: burgers, custards, fries. The Kopp's Special shake was AMAZING. I'm sure the other custards were too, but I'll describe this concoction. It was gone in 10 minutes. What was gone? A vanilla shake, lined with chocolate sauce, topped with candied pecans, banana slices and a single cherry. There were even pieces of fresh strawberry on the bottom to make you feel better about inhaling those couple hundred calories so fast. Then I made the mistake of ordering a double hamburger...not realizing that they specialize in JUMBO burgers. The patties were the size of my face. I used to love the thinner lighter bun you used to use but, it's basically all bun now and little patty... very disappointing. They have excellent custard, and offer 2 different flavors a day beyond the usual chocolate and vanilla. They have huge burgers, chicken sandwiches and a fish sandwich. I've eaten at Kopp's one too many times since my initial review. I've been at all three locations, and Brookfield by far is the worst one (Glendale and Layton are always excellent - 4-5 stars in my view). My biggest gripe with this location is the inconsistency with the custard and the malts. My rant about the drinks was documented already in my past review, and things really haven't changed. The custard here tends to often be super soft. In other words, once you get your cone, you need to devour it within a minute before the once delicious treat became a royal mess. Another issue I have is with the consistency of their serving sizes. Most of the kids working there give pretty generous sized servings of custard, as do the managers when they're out there working the front. However, there are two guys who always scoop about half the size of what normally is given. It's taken me many visits to finally provide an update and downgrade my rating of Kopp's Brookfield. I'm kind of over their custard right now. I feel like slamming down my double in a regular cone in a minute is an unsatisfying waste of calories. If I'm going to indulge on a 1500 calorie treat, it better be damn good! And seriously, my two last visits to Kopp's were beyond disappointing. read more

Coming from California, I know ice cream, gelato, frozen yogurt, and even shaved snow, but I've never come across frozen custard. I know now! So frozen custard is pretty awesome. Probably because the fat percentage is pretty high, but let's not worry about that. We got lucky because the one of the daily flavors just so happened to be Twix. A huge scoop in a waffle cone for $3? Ridiculously cheap by my standards. As a huge fan of root beer, I was also excited that they had Sprecher root beer on tap! I always wanted to try this place ever since I saw it on the travel channel but was a it weary of it because it also recommended Ted Drewes Frozen Custard which i thought was just ok. I was feeling a bit full when I got there but after I tasted my custard I knew I wouldn't have a problem finishing it. I just got a small chocolate chip cookie dough, the special of the day, and I was surprised by how much they give you. I could tell by just looking at it that it was different from the other custard places that I've been to. It looked and tasted richer, creamier and each bite was full of flavor. I absolutely love Kopps and come every chance I get (which is a lot considering I live like 10 minutes away). Their burgers are huge and juicy. I always get mine with ketchup and raw onions. I tried their fried onions once and wasn't a big fan of them (not enough onion flavor that comes with raw ones that are cooked with the heat from the burger). For some reason, there's always 1 or 2 pickles in my burger or the bottom of the bag even though I never ordered them. I don't really mind since I like a couple of pickles here and there. Not a big fan of their fries though. I like really crispy fries but theirs are thicker and meatier with the skins on. Just a preference though. I normally order their onion rings instead which are super crispy and really big. They come out piping hot though so be careful! Now onto their frozen custard which is to die for. I've had almost all of their flavors ever. It's super rich and super smooth. The flavors of the day are very yummy and true to their word. I always order mine in a dish because you get a little cute side waffle cracker chip thing. I'm a big fan of Summer Passion (passion fruit + raspberry), German Apple Streusel, Macadamia Nut (salty from the nuts + butterscotch custard), Butter Pecan and Mocha Chip. Clearly I can't pick just 1 favorite. The list goes on and on. Their malts are very rich and thick and delicious as well. I trie the oreo malt and I would definitely order it again if it was a meh flavor of the day (which is rare). Kopp's is one of those places that makes you proud to live in Milwaukee. The burgers are dreamy. There's this one episode of The Cosby Show where Theo tries to impress a girl by taking her to a fancy restaurant with unpronounceable items and crazy prices until they both decide to ditch the restaurant and pick up the most incredible-looking fast-food burgers and fries instead. THESE ARE THOSE BURGERS IN REAL LIFE. Smashed and gooey and buttery and unpretentious. And don't be a dweeb; get the bacon. I love the onion rings too. The batter is thick and crunchy, with just the right amount of salt that works beautifully dunked in ketchup. That actually brings to my one criticism: the ketchup packets. Who still serves ketchup packets??? Get on that McDonald's game, Kopp's, and have a ketchup dispenser at the condiments table instead of making your customers tear open 20 individual packets to pinch out .001 drops of ketchup. I usually take my food home and empty out about half of those family-sized Heinz bottles. As any true onion-ring-lover would. I haven't even gotten to the custard and my review's tl;dr as it is. Recently visited Kopp's. None of the employees were wearing masks including those handling food. There was no accommodation for social distancing in the ordering area despite crowding and most folks were not wearing masks. Interesting that a hardware store requires masks to prevent the spread of Covid19 to employees as well customers but not a restaurant.
