My friends and I went to Korea Garden for the first time last week. We had basically been turned away from three other restauraunts in the area that were closed for lunch, but there they were, with the door waiting open for us to get some hot food on a cold windy day. One of my friends brought her very excited (read: loud) daughter with her and the staff was SO friendly. We honestly felt bad for the disruption but they came and spoke to her and because it wasn't too crowded at that time, let her run around a little bit. Just for the service alone, five stars! But then theres the food. We had actually planned on getting sushi that day but the place was closed between lunch and dinner. At Korea Garden, my friends were able to get the sushi they wanted, while I was craving hot and spicy Kimchijjigae. The food came out quickly, the presentation was nice, and the stew was nice and sour. I cant forget to mention all of the banchan was tasty as well and we were given probably 6 different sides (if you're not getting decent banchan, you're in the wrong place!) All in all, I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for good Korean food and great service! read more

I've been to Korea Garden a handful of times, and I can't believe that I haven't written a review by now! This is in fact the best place in the Philly suburbs for authentic Korean food (note that I said, 'burbs - I haven't tried anything in Center City yet.) I'll admit that I'm basing my review solely on the dol sot bimimbap, because that's all I order when I go here. (I'm sure the bbq is delicious too, but when you crave a certain dish, why stray from that?) The service is courteous and prompt, and the food is simply delicious. Plain and simple. This review is based on two lunchtime visits in the last three weeks. We've been coming to this restaurant for close a decade on & off. After a few years hiatus due to bad word of mouth from fellow Koreans, my parents & I decided to revisit since we have been disappointed with other local Korean restaurants. Their side dishes (bahn chahn) vary but were good. Their wonton soup & stews are very good. Their bi bin bap is good. The worst dish we ordered was their spicy squid stir fry with noodles. The squid was tough (over cooked) with all tentacles & spicy sauce had a weird aftertaste. But now this will be our go to Korean place. read more

Clean environment. Friendly staff. Descent food. For anyone that's unfamiliar with Korean BBQ: - You choose your type of meats ( 2 min.) and a bunch of sides come free w/ the order - A plate of raw meat gets delivered to your table so you'll have to grill it yourself If this is your first time at a Korean BBQ restaurant, it'll be a fun experience. If you go there super hungry, be prepared, you'll have to roll up your sleeves and do some dirty work. So why the 3 start rating? The prime ribs with bones didn't that much meat so I probably wouldn't get that again. The Bulgo Ki was pretty good. read more

In full disclosure: I am not a local and most of my Korean restaurant experiences are from the NJ area. So take my rating with a grain of salt, based on your level of expectation in this geographical area. I have to say that the food is average and the service, inconsistent. Asked for hot tea and never got it. Soondubu was served without an option to customize spiciness, and the broth was very thick. My colleagues enjoyed their bento boxes, but when one asked if there is fish in the California rolls, the manager/owner said no, which I find suspect as nearly all imitation crab meat is made of fish. They did, however, give us separate checks without complaint and banchan was provided. It was cold in the restaurant. All in all, an ok experience but nothing to rave about. read more

Decent! Semi-authentic ethnic Korean food in the Newtown Square / Valley Forge area. Worth the drive if you're looking for Korean food. My wife and I ate here in October '07. We didn't want to cook our own kalbi or bulgoogi as we'd end up stinky all day. The meats are good here. After striking out trying to hit the food court at the Assi Plaza store (which is closed for remodeling) we stumbled upon Korea Garden. We decided to forego the Korean bbq and instead ordered two dishes. My wife ordered kimchi jigae and I ordered stir fried pork with kimchi. Overall both dishes were good, with great flavor. The disappointment with the soup though was that it is made with pork belly, and not pork bone. My wife much prefers pork bone (which the meat tends to fall right off the bone, and she loves gnawing on the pork bone too) The stir fried pork and kimchi dish was the real winner. Great flavor, pork that was very tender and spicy but not overwhelming. Plenty of ban chan was served with the meal (pickled radish, cabbage, agar agar, bean sprouts, potato salad, etc) Service was attentive and friendly as well. Good overall meal and fast service. I went here for lunch with two co-workers today and we all had a pretty good time. As we walked in we notice the burnt smell that was originating from another party of over 8 people enjoying their Korean barbeque. The smell wasn't strong, but it lingered for a bit, at least until we got out meals. After you order, you get a few small side dishes as appetizers. (These side dishes are called banchan): We had some items from the lunch menu: * Fried fish strips, this was the best side dish, light and very flavorful. Look a bit like sliced strips of fried tofu. * Lightly-spiced Korean cucumbers slices, tied wit the bean sprouts for second * Seasoned bean sprouts, seasoned with salt sugar and sesame oil * Nokdumuk (a gelatin like dish made from mung bean starts), very smooth taste and texture * Pan-fried tofu, served cold; pretty tasty * Cabbage kimchi; also good * Sweet black soybeans, black soybeans in a sweet and slightly salty sauce I had the Jae Yook Bokum, which is basically a oval plate of stir-fried kimchi and spicy pork that came with miso soup and a bowl of white rice (you can get another bowl for free, if you ask). The pork tasted tasted pretty good and went well with the white rice. I recommend eat by the piece with the rice so you can enjoy the so you can savor the spices and the juicy pork flavor. The only thing I didn't really like about this dish was that some of the sliced pork bits were a bit hard to chew, but overall the dish was pretty tender. This dish had a good amount of spiciness that doesn't linger after you finish eating. One co-worker got the Jae Yook Dolsot Bap, which is essentially the dolsot bibimbap (basically a mixed rice dish in a hot stone bowl that cooks as you eat it) with spicy pork. Be careful when you order this because everything some out very hot so it might take a few minutes for it too cool down. Other than the temperature he said it was pretty good. As with any bibimbap dish remember to mix the ingredients in the bowl before you eat it! I believe other co-worker had Jam Bong (a slightly spicy seafood noodle dish), this dish also came out a bit hot like the bibimbap, but aside from that he thought noodles and soup to be good. The restaurant is located within a shopping center so parking here is pretty convenient. This is an ideal place to come and meet up with some friends or have lunch with co-workers. I haven't tried their barbecue, but I'll definitely be coming back for another visit to see how it is. read more

"Let me start off by saying that I've lived in LA for the past 13 years and so I have a very high standard when it comes to Korean food as I believe it's the best in the world (including Korean food in Korea) so to find a place that's pretty decent in the East Coast is like finding a gem among a sea of garbage." With that disclaimer said, this is one of two Korean restaurants that I've actually enjoyed eating at on the East Coast and I've been to about 50 in the past month. And all the others are crap. Now when I first walked in, I didn't expect much. I actually thought the food at this place would be pretty crappy because the interior decor was nicer than most Korean restaurants, which to me meant they were catering to a more "white" crowd (ie compromised food - taste-wise) which there actually were quite a few along with Koreans as well. And in this instance, was one of the few times I've been proven wrong after first impressions. I got their dolsot bibimbap (hot pot rice with veggies) and it was really good. Better than some of the places I've had in LA. For an "appetizer" we got the pajun (Korean veggie pancake) and it's some of the best I've ever had. Their banchan was really good too and we had to ask for more, which is rare for me too. Few things I really, really didn't like. It gets super loud in there. I mean so loud you can't have a normal conversation with the person next to you. Almost club-like in terms of volume. I really didn't like that. This was the first Korean restaurant i would actually go back to again in the Philadelphia, PA area. I come from central Jersey Edison area where there is a plethora of Korean restaurants all competing for business and competition is tough so the offerings there are amazing. That said, I've been to a few Korean restaurants in Philly and suburbs of Lansdale area. I've been hugely disappointed until I came to Korea Garden. The place is beautifully decorated upon entering and feels like an authentic Asian experience. The appetizers were not as selective as I've had in places in Jersey (they typically give out spicy squid, a couple types of Kim chee, and sometimes even a whole fish..that's how competitive it is..i swear..the appetizers alone are a meal enough unto themselves there)..Nevertheless they were actually very good here and of great quality.What they lacked in selection they made up for in quality. I had the Yaechaw(??) It was a specialty dish of raw beef and egg with asian pear...absolutely amazing and very satisfying to the palate as well as to the belly. My daughter had the Kimchee jigae which i tasted and was pretty good. I'm not a soup connosiuer so much as my daughter but she really enjoyed her soup. Let me start off by saying that I NEVER went to a Korean restaurant that charged extra for a bowl of rice. When i got my rice it was hard and uncooked. Apparently you got one bowl of rice for one order. However, if you where to share the order you only got one bowl of rice. Never heard of this! Lost one star here. The meat was way too thick and dry. Plus the grill had a weak fire power and it made the meat water out. Disappointed. Lost one star. The light above us was constantly blinking because the light bulb was about to burn out. It made the entire experience there go down hill. Plus the service was bad. The lady was no where to be found when our meat was ready to be turned over. So we had to serve ourselves. Then she took away the clamp for the meat and we had to use our chopsticks to flip them. The worst. One waitress there seemed like she never wanted to serve us. It was bad. Lost one star! Better than our favorite Korean Restaurant in Los Angeles!! Our party of four arrived around 8:45pm, after a long day. Our server, 'Dave' - who never did tell us his Korean name ;) - asked if we had any questions and took our appetizers order (ok, so we mixed in a couple Japanese apps). Drink orders arrived promptly and Dave advised us that the kitchen would be closing in 30 mins ... not to rush us, he said, but so we could get our orders in before their best chef left. Not a problem since we pretty much knew what we wanted. Dave seemed a bit dubious when we asked for the Korean 'authentic' spice level, not the Americanized version ... and he did not disappoint! Despite the late hour, everything came out fresh, we were *not* rushed through our meal, and we thoroughly enjoyed every morsel! This place has to be by far my favorite "authentic" Korean restaurant outside of a major city. If you have a palate for Korean food I highly recommend you try this place. Also, if Korean food is too daring for you they also offer Japanese cuisine which I never tried because I come for the Korean food :). I have never been disappointed with a meal here. Stopped in for lunch on a day off. Staff was very welcoming and the complimentary Korean side Dishes are always welcomed. I ordered the seafood noodle soup "as spicy as you can make it." My waiter checked to make sure I was serious. The noodles were al dente and the mussels were delicious. They delivered on the spice. We ordered 3orders of bbq, started grilling and since I always eat rice with my meat, I asked the server and she did not appear until we finished our bbq. I was already frustrated when she brought the rice out. She didn't ask if we need anything else and although we were planning to order more, the speed of the service ruined the appetite. Certain things on the menu are out of this world. The best Galbi is here. I eat Korean food a lot because I'm obsessed with the spiciness and flavor. Galbi is not a spiced dish. It is bone-in beef with fat. The way they prepare it here is better than any other Korean restaurant I've been to. I've been to a number. Around this area, this Galbi is the best. The restaurant interior is small. Sometimes there are flies. They may have gotten rid of these. I would recommend you get take out. The person who answers the phone might not have that great of english, but its ok. The food is good enough to make up for service. read more

Korea Garden is a quaint restaurant in a small shopping area off of Dekalb Pike. We were in the mood for Korean and decided to give the place a try. We started with Haemul Pajeon, which is a mixed seafood and scallions pancake. It's nothing like the traditional pancake you're thinking of. For the main course, we decided to go with the Korean barbecue. We ordered Shrimp Kui and Chicken Kui. The chicken was delicious. The shrimp didn't have much taste, but we soon realized one of the sides we were provided with, which appeared to be liquefied salt and pepper, was placed on our table for the sole purpose of adding flavor to the shrimp. He eliminated from our bill but he said it is because they use chicken breast(They could you dark meat or braised). Overall the cook is disqualified for restaurant food. Handful of Korean BBQ places in the area, this one stands out a bit because it also offers hotpot and sushi. The interior decor definitely looks more like a Japanese restaurant with the wood rafters. Service is fantastic and friendly, BBQ is pretty standard, and the side dishes are yummy. Whenever I go out for Korean BBQ, I always order seafood pancake (which is great here as well) and Jap Chae (which is not so great here). I like that everyone gets one of those little yogurt probiotic drinks at the end. I haven't tried the hotpot or sushi, but I feel like a restaurant is better when they focus on one style of food instead of trying to encompass multiple styles. For example I never really liked mackerel but here it is absolutely awesome. If you don't want BBQ done at the table they will do it in the kitchen. This is located in a strip mall in Blue Bell on Route 202. My wife and I were here for lunch on Saturday with a friend. The restaurant was largely empty but for a large Asian group. We were promptly recognized and seated at a large table - a table that would hold 6. Considering that I had just met my friend after a gap of only 12 years, we didn't spend the first few minutes looking at the menu and were understandably not ready to order. Our server did check in periodically but she was polite when she found that we weren't ready. In the end, it took us a few minutes to decide because it was a large menu. I settled on Shrimp Bokkum Bap (Fried rice with shrimp & vegetables) while my wife went for a fried shrimp tempura bento box. My friend went with the chicken tempura bento box. Before our entrees came out, there were various munchables provided for the table and I found some of them quite enjoyable. However, the entree itself was a bit disappointing because I found the shrimp fried rice quite bland. I had to get some hot sauce and with the sauce mixed in, the dish was much more enjoyable. My other complaint about the dish was that it had far too few vegetables - it was largely a ton of rice along with many small pieces of shrimp (the size that are used for shrimp salad). Pictures next to the "Bibimbap" section of menu had suggested that the dish would have more veggies. My wife's bento box was no different from other bento boxes I have had in the past - a little bit of everything - fried shrimp tempura, some fried veggies, a few pieces of sushi, some garden salad, and some japchae. Portions were substantial enough that she couldn't finish it all and I had to help her and even then we didn't finish everything. My friend also finished only about 1/2 - 2/3rd of his bento box. It says something though that he didn't feel like taking what was left over with him. Overall, this place meets the basics I suppose but it doesn't stand out. Service was decent but not exceptional. I had to get off the table to request the hot sauce because there was no one to be seen. Portions were huge but the taste itself was nothing worth writing home about. And finally prices aren't too low in general. The bento boxes which are a part of the lunch special, and priced at $12.95 are a good deal. The entree items themselves however start at about $15-16 and aren't too cheap. In the end, I might be willing to give this place yet one more shot but only because I am really really craving Korean food. And this time around, I will be sure to order better and more carefully. read more
