Recently went here with a friend. My first experience at a Korean restaurant. The guy that sat us asked if we wanted to cook our own food or did we want them to cook it. We said them. Then he showed us what we could order on the menu based on where we sat. I found it funny however, I guess it is common. I didn't go crazy and just ordered the Bokkeumbap which translates to fried rice with shrimp. Food came out quickly and they brought about six sides in little white bowls. Service was nice. My favorite korean restaurant in all of Austin for the past 3-4 years. The food here reminds me of how my Oma would used to make it. Incredibly consistent, the wait staff is friendly and inviting, and on top of it all, they have just remodeled the interior for more seating and improved on the existing menu items as if they weren't already delicious. My fianceé's favorite dish is their bibimnaengmeon, she dreams about it sometimes. You can tell they put good ingredients, time, and effort into their food. read more

The restaurant is huge and beautiful in the inside and it has a nice atmosphere to it. The menu is on the pricer sire than your average hamburger joint so just take note of that. I ordered the chicken bulgogi and the presentation and taste of it was very good. Only complaint is the amount of rice given. You would think for a whole plate of meat you would get a bowl of rice that's fitted for the amount. I was appalled when I saw that the rice bowl wasn't adequately filled, and rice isn't expensive at all in the quantity that this restaurant is buying. I've tried most of the Korean restaurants in Austin, and unfortunately, I have to say that this is the most disappointing one among all. The place is filthy and old. From my understanding, you need to wrap the sushi fish with plastic wrap to maintain the freshness. But I noticed that some of the sushi fish weren't wrapped with it. I ordered a dwenjang jjigae (aka soybean paste stew). And it tasted a little bland to me. It was perfectly spiced, but the soybean paste to water ratio was not right. My boyfriend ordered the soft tofu soup. It was disgusting, and he did not like it at all. Tonight was the first time being here. My hubby was suggested this place by a co worker, who stated it was amazing. At first reading the reviews I was a bit skeptical. I'm from L.A and traditional korean food here in Austin is not really that impressive imo. Now, the food I've had tonight was indeed the most spectacular and amazing korean food I've had since my coming here to Texas. Their Bibimnaengmyun (Spicy buckwheat noodle) brought me back to childhood. The moment it touched my tongue.. It reminded me of the time I was growing up in Korea. My grandma and I shared our first buckwheat noodle bowl during summer and it was amazing. That was what this noodle bowl at Korea House made me feel. I have never felt such nostalgia before but I must say I was in complete awe. From the hardworking, courteous husband who greeted customers at the door.. to the wife who is the head chef. It was a sight to behold. Almost picturesque. I'm not sure why some people are haters but hey.. everyone is entitled to their own opinions as I am. The food was pretty good and people who say it is to high priced, well they are wrong, you are ordering meat and tender rib meat which isn't cheap. So we ordered Bulgogi and beef ribs to cook at table side. I also order the Japchae which was really delicious and good portion size. We had dumplings very delicious and a pancake. The minute I heard about the DolSot Bi Bim Bop at Korea House, I knew I simply must try it. However, at first, I wasn't sure if it was a revived form of uptempo jazz, a Ninja Turtle villain, or a culinary dish. Luckily, it was the last one. I met Neal and Lisa for dinner. Apparently, this is one of their favorite spots for lunch and dinner, as I've been hearing about it for months. They said that they knew it was good based on the actual number of Asian people who patronized the restaurant. It might seem like a cliche, but I had the same thought about Ho Ho Chinese BBQ, and I certainly was not disappointed there. They told me not to freak out when I first walked in, since they said it may not be as fancy as I might expect. Well, very rarely am I told to brace myself before even seeing a place, so I was half expecting a filthy opium den with haphazard floor pillows and people eating off the floor. Imagine my surprise when I walked in and it was a normal, run-of-the-mill restaurant. I mean sure, they didn't have the solid gold utensils, silk covered triclinia or Italian marble floors cleaned with the tears of children that I'm used to, but it would do for a casual Tuesday afternoon dinner. The petite lady who greeted us was very friendly and we were seated immediately. Since Neal and Lisa were old pros and I already knew what I wanted, we placed our order quickly and didn't have to wait long for our food. Lisa ordered Combination Plate C, which consisted of beef bulgogi (marinated barbecued beef), yakki mandoo (Korean egg roll similar to a pot sticker), shrimp tempura, a hearty soup, bi bim bop (various vegetables and rice), and two pieces of sushi. It looked like quite a substantial meal for under $7. Neal and I both ordered the DolSot Bi Bim Bop, which is the same bowl of rice, beef, and vegetables as on the combo platter, except it's served in a scorching hot stonewear bowl and topped with a raw egg that you mix in and scramble. It sounded delicious. Lisa insisted I taste a little bit of everything. The bulgogi was tender and flavorful, and could easily hold its own as an entree; I adored the light, crispy shrimp tempura, and the yakki mandoo stuffed with meat and vegetables was easily my favorite appetizer. I'm a sucker for pot stickers. When my dish came out, I had just enough time to snap a photo before Lisa told me I needed to hurry the hell up and start stirring the food, otherwise the rice on the bottom will burn. DO NOT touch the bowl; it's scalding hot and remains that way for quite some time. You get quite a work out stirring in the egg as steam constantly rises from the bowl. They leave a mildly spicy red bean paste on the side that you can mix in as well; I used mine sparingly while Neal basically dyed his dish red. After it was properly mixed, the food was still steaming hot, so they said the next step was to try the various kimchi that comes as part of the meal while the bi bim bop cools. Confession: I had never had kimchi before, and Lisa promised it would be fine if I didn't like it, as most white people don't. White people not liking kimchi? I had to disagree. This was Austin, home of the Eternal Hipster. I've been given three different kimchi recommendations in as many minutes just talking about Korean food with friends and fellow Yelpers. Please. Kimchi is the new hummus. Kimchi is not just the fermented cabbage one might think of, but also other Korean side dishes such as tofu (with and without jalapenos), potato, beans, cucumbers, and bean sprouts. I found most of the sides to be quite flavorful, and I can say I do enjoy the fermented cabbage kimchi (mostly because I like the taste of vinegar). All in all, it was an excellent meal. Since they do not have a website or online menu, I took a hard copy on the way out to see what else is offered for future reference. Overall, it was an authentic and savory meal. Sometimes I feel like a fool going to places where you cook your own food. The good part is that they season the meat perfectly and bring you those adventurous little side dishes. The bad part is you've kind of got to guess when the meat is cooked and the service is spotty. I'll get to the point, this is not a flashy see and be seen sort of place. This place does not have staff that will kiss your behind and make you feel like a king. This is not the place where hordes of "hip people" go and talk about how hip they are. I guess at this point you understand the idea I am trying to get across. This is the place you go if you love Korean food and you don't want to spend a lot of money. This is the place that will give you many little dishes of side items with your meal. This is the place that will serve you a meal so good you will be pissed you didn't try it earlier. This is the little hide away place that you will only tell your closest friends or favorite coworkers about. I know you are thinking that I must be full of it, but I dare you to visit and tell me you didn't enjoy your food. I cannot comment on the sushi only because I didn't order it. I was being cheap and got one of the lunch specials. The meal was under 7 bucks and I couldn't finish it. But I made sure I tasted everything! The soup was great but I was far to enthralled into inhaling the bulgogi and yaki mandu to even think about finishing it. All in all it was the best 7 bucks I've spent in a long time. It is absolutely critical that you watch your check when you go to Korea House. There is nothing written in English on it... and no break down of the cost... so regardless the vibe of the place or the quality of the food, it is absolutely critical that you pay attention to what you get and the prices on the menu so that you aren't overcharged. We've caught them trying to inflate our bill by a random almost $10 amount... so what you'll see on a check is a line or two of Korean writing and a total... that's it. You need to do the math on your own so you don't get taken. They'll correct it when you call them out on it "OOPS!" But if they did that to us, they probably do that a lot. Also if you're in a group of FIVE (5) or more... they add an automatic 18% gratuity. They do everything but pick your pocket here. The food's ok though. read more

I have wanted to come here for so long. I fell in love with Korean food and the reviews on this place made me want to eat here. So finally a co-worker and I make the trip during lunch. After driving around the parking lot for a while, we found the entrance or rather the path to the entrance. We gazed at the Koi pond for a short time before going in. It is smaller and older than I expected. No problem, as long as the food is good. We get seated and check out the lunch specials. Beef bulgogi with a side of Yakki Mandoo catches my eye especially since it is only $6.45. My friend orders the same and we get ice tea. It wasn't too long before our lunch is brought to us. I immediately dive into the Bulgogi. Not too much fat, but the seasoning was muted not like I am used to. It was good but it wouldn't make me come back. So I check out the banchan dishes. First two are standard fare, Kimchi and cucumber in chili sauce both tasted good. The second two dishes made me go, WTF. A slaw mix with vinegar and slices of boiled potatoes, both of these I could have done without. Sorry, but I must repeat this "Slices of boiled potatoes!!!" The yakki mandoo was delicious. Fried dumpling with a soy base sauce to dip in. I would consider going back, the price is right and the food was good except for the boiled potato. read more

This is gonna be long, pre warned We've always been big Korean BBQ fans. We've tried the plethora of places here in Houston and even the couple we've stumbled across in Austin We first tried Korea House maybe 2 years ago and have come maybe a handful of times since, typically we order some plates of meat to grill (the bacon and the beef are good!) and never have an issue with the staff. Sure the restroom is a little odd, sure the employees linger a bit too much, sure it's a little further out of the way but the food is always good and satisfying. They're pretty helpful in cooking if you don't know how to do it We came this weekend after my brother's graduation, four of us; we ordered three plates of meat to grill. They brought along with the meat... the banchan, a plate of rice and some lettuce. We did our thing, you know just flippin meat and sharing these little banchan (side dishes) but we got to a point where we were running low on the sides... Cause I don't know about you but I can't eat straight meat for an entire meal. The sides help break up the taste of ROAR ME CARNIVORE in my mouth. I ask the waitress to get us some more and she has this annoyingly fake-happy voice telling us the first round is complimentary "on the house for free, from them" and that it is $1 per refill per side dish. Girl bye my mom and I are stunned a) because I've never been to a Korean place that has an issue offering refills on sides and b) it's not like I'm the only person eating these things. There are FOUR people here and we've ordered PLENTY of meat... So.... I let it go and just say okay no thanks we'll skip the refills then. We just kept eating but slowly started running out of the rice. My dad is putting the last bit on his plate and one of the waitresses is hovering (as if she was willingly about to refill our rice) and my dad asks if we can get more rice? She informs us that it'll be an extra charge. Um are y'all serious? The ratio of food we ordered to the amount of sides we got just didn't make sense. And we know that and they know that. Just not a good business practice and we won't be back honestly because of it. We've never had an issue paying extra for things if it is practical or logical. This was not one of those instances. My friend and I were in town and thought we would give this place a try because of all of the stellar reviews. Unfortunately, we did not have a good experience here. We ordered the beef and pork bbq at the table and a soft tofu stew. Overall, it felt like we could have gotten a better and cheaper meal at an H-Mart food court. The meat looked like it had been pulled straight out of a package and the stew was quite underwhelming in flavor. My biggest gripe is they charge an extra dollar per side dish (ban chan) and they charge two extra dollars for more lettuce leaves. Five lettuce leaves is not enough for two plates of bbq... Finally, the WORST part of this visit was that there was a four-inch piece of plastic in the raw pork bbq, which had been cooked on the griddle. I then mistakenly put it in my mouth since I thought it was a piece of meat drenched in sauce. What a choking hazard! They get one star for comping that portion of bbq. Coming from Bay Area, CA., this is the hands-down best traditional Korean restaurant in Austin proper with kind staff.

I had their bibimbap recently and it was delicious!! Lots of different flavorful vegetables and the fried egg was the perfect consistency! I like that they the put the gochujang on the side (even though I eventually ended up using all of it). I can't wait to try their dolsot version in the future. I've also had their beef bulgogi and sushi several years ago, and they were both delicious. It had been a while since I'd been back, because their service (as others have mentioned) was getting less and less friendly and they were getting super stingy with the quantity of banchan. I'm looking forward to seeing if those aspects have changed, because their food is really delicious! read more

YAY! Good Korean Food in Austin! So I had a chance to drop by here with some friends for a late dinner. Sidenote tip: the floors are very very slick so be careful in those heels ladies! Anyway at first we were apparently seated in the "foreigners only" section but as the restaurant cleared out a bit we got upgraded to the front section. We started with the seafood pancake. It was full of seafood and tasted delicious. I ordered the soft tofu soup and asked for no beef (I don't like meat in my tofu soups). When my soup came out it was bubbling hot, deliciously spicy, and packed with soft tofu. I was pleased, no "foreigner spice level special" here! Also I wasn't sure if it was supposed to come with seafood or not but it apparently did. It was kind of like a bag of surprises... in a good way. I found fresh clams and shrimp in my soup. This only added to the deliciousness. In addition there was a large selection of banchan BUT the food was so great that we actually barely ate any of the banchan. My companions ordered the Dolsot Bibambap, the spicy Korean soup, and the short ribs. I got to try a piece of short rib and it was tender and flavorful. Everyone else apparently loved their dishes as well. The best thing was our server, Joe. He made friendly recommendations and we even chatted about the best places around town to get the other Korean dishes I like. First off, I had a difficult time trying to find this place. I saw the restaurant sign on the plaza, but couldn't find the restaurant, I even thought it closed down. Until my friend told me that it was located in the inside of the plaza where there's fish pond and mini bridge. When we walked in we were greeted by hostess, and were sat down immediately (there weren't many people there and it was around 12:30pm). I ordered the dol sot bi bim bap which was such a treat! I love love LOVE dol sot bi bim bap! The texture was amazing! And there was a good balance of veggies and poultry. Idk if many people know that the purpose of the stone pot is to keep the bimbimap bap warm while eating. I love hearing the crunch sound as I spoon my final scoop. A few things that the restaurant could've done better was post a sign or something to show that the place exists! Especially for someone who's not from the Austin area! If you let it sit there, it'll get brown & crispy the way it's supposed to. You ruin everything if you start flipping the rice over too soon. I also recommend their soondubu (tofu soup with beef and seafood). It comes with a raw egg inside that cooks in the bubbling hot soup. I guess if I could use one word to describe this place it would be "comfortable." Very patient and friendly waitstaff, old school feel... you can see the owner's old golf trophies on top of the drink fridge. Sort of secluded in its own part of a small shopping center. It's just a nice place. You can expect standard korean bbq, along with some surprisingly fresh sushi. They have some fun and unique rolls to chose from. I'm excited to write this review because dining at Korea House 2 weekends in a row was a wonderful experience.Full disclosure, it's been at least 15 years since we've eaten here, and our last experience was terrible. The service was especially bad and the food was off. Because we own a business nearby we thought enough time had passed that we thought we'd give it another try. I'm so glad that we did. The seafood and Kimchi pancakes were the best we've ever eaten. And we've travelled to Korea! The crust was crispy and the toppings were generous. The banchans were fresh and tasty, and the meats that we grilled at our table were beautiful. I highly recommend the spicy squid or baby octopus, and the beef tongue was incredibly tender. The service was also excellent. The manager, Aaron, visits each table insuring an enjoyable experience. We won't be eating at our old favorites in Austin anymore, there's just no comparison. My only disappointment is that the restaurant doesn't serve Pa Muchim, the scallion salad that we've enjoyed at every other Korean restaurant we've ever eaten at. It's especially good when served with the grilled meats. Aaron, maybe you should think about adding this to your menu. It won't keep us from coming back, but it would be a lovely addition. I like this place -- despite the crappy service and questionable cleanliness and that the sushi doesn't look appetizing. I tried it once. Meh. I love the grilled meats --Bulgogi was pretty tasty. Short ribs weren't the greatest -- kind of "rough trade" mystery meat, but hit the spot. My favorite is the cold spicy noodles. I wish I could remember the real name of this dish, but I can't and its not on-line. Its not really cold - kinda warm, but not hot, and there is meat in it. The consistency of these noodles is SO FRICKIN Fantastic. Kind of sticky. Kind of oily. Spicy. Hard to explain. Totally addicting. I stuff them in my mouth and my eyes roll back in my head. Was in ATX and was craving for some Korean BBQ. This place was authentic, however food was only mediocre, and the service sucks. The servers sucks bad!! We had a hard time ordering, they were confused of what came out and what didn't. The stove top needed to be changed because it was so burnt, but they didn't even change it out until we told them.. when clearly theres a cloud of smoke at the table.. We had problems identifying the meats and they were confused of what came out.. they put more than one order on a plate, which is explainable.. but we ordered the exact same order the second time (we had a big party) and the quantity of the meats was not the same at all.. They cut the bone off the kalbi sai, so be aware of that.. We had the following: - Dolsot Bibim Bap - assorted vegetables and cooked beef topped with rice & fried egg served in a hot pot - this was decent, nothing special about it - Bulgogi - marinated beef - mediocre, nothing great - Kalbi sai - marinated beef short rib - I was very disappointed, because I like to gnaw on the bone.. so very disappointed they cut it off - Samgyeopusal - pork belly - how can you go wrong with pork belly? SO VERY DISAPPOINTED!!! I'm from Los Angeles and ate at the Korea House back in January twice in one week. The food was great and the service was good so I couldn't wait to go back again. Well, this time was not good. I went for lunch last week with 3 friends and we all ordered the Bento Box B which comes with a couple pieces of sushi, shrimp tempura, teriyaki chicken and 2 kinds of grilled meat. All of us got an upset stomach and the runs shortly after eating. I could tell something was off with the grilled meat. It tasted grainy and the texture was strange, like it was turning bad. The shrimp tempura was good though, as well as the japchae that I also ordered. Service was good. That's why I'm giving this review 2 stars instead of one. read more

I've visited Korea House from out of town twice now. Both times I've had the chicken bulgogi along with house selected banchan (small plates for sharing that come with the meal, such as kimchi, pickled radish, sweet potato, etc.). The restaurant is small and cozy, located in an outdoor mall with a view of a cute pond with trees. Service has been quick, the food arrived quickly, and everything tasted great. It was good enough for me to return a second time during a trip with limited time, so I certainly recommend it. read more

Haven't been here for many, many years and remembered how good it was back then. So I decided to take my niece here while she was in town. A lot has changed! The sushi bar was gone, not as many people drawn to this place unless we were too early but it was a weekday assuming we'd get the early rush. No rush at all. We ordered jap chae noodles, kal bi ribs and chigae soup. Everything seemed to be too sweet! The sides are different from what I remember. It was a disappointment however the staff were very nice and helpful. I'm not so sure I will travel from Leander for Korean food. I could probably do better at HMart or make it myself. Sorry.
