    a menu for lunch special
    Chris Y.

Korean Soul Chicken has opened, taking over a sushi place, that used to be a poke and sushi place before, and a poke place before then, at least for its restaurant history. Located near DVC, in the same parking lot as Mountain Mike's, Giant Chef, and Teapot, it's a decent area that can usually get some foot traffic from students and alike. It's not a large place, as they also blocked off part of the front of the store on the right side for storage compared to the previous openings, but it's kind of nice. Makes it feel a bit more cozy, albeit, doesn't really have much seating as a result, but enough. It has mainly looked the same inside as the first owner that opened up, but again, it's a small spot, so not much is necessary. The staff here are nice. I had dropped by in the past before, but the person at the front wasn't terribly helpful or seemed friendly, so I didn't really stay to try anything. I had looked at their initial menu, and there weren't that menu good lunch options before, but that was awhile ago. Nice to see now that they have more of those options available, especially considering the clientele in the area. The prices for the lunch are actually quite decent. A good value for lunch, particularly for students on a budget. The dinner menu of course is going to be a bit more, but the wings are actually a good amount, as it's based on weight rather than number of wings, so you will always get a good deal at least. Hence, why the number of wings varies per order for those who are curious. Ordered a few things to try out on my first visit. Let's go with the small stuff first. Sweet potato fries were good. They're as advertised, sweet potato fries. No complaints. The mandu here are pretty good. For those unaware, it's basically gyoza. I do like theirs though as the filling is good, and a good amount of filling in them. Not too expensive either. And coming to Korean Soul Chicken, you got to try their wings I suppose. Got a full order of the Galbi wings. So I'm going to say just about everything about these wings were very delicious. The galbi sauce isn't quite a galbi sauce, as it's not really sweet enough, but it's still tasty regardless. The meat on the wings were really good. Just perfectly cooked, and the wings and drumsticks are generously sized, so you will get your fill of it. The amount of wings in the box too for the price are very comparable, particularly in comparison to other Korean chicken places like Pollo Pollo or Hello Chicken and Sushi just nearby. The only thing that I don't really like about this place though is that the way they batter their chicken, or the batter they use, just isn't very good, which kind of takes away from the whole fried chicken experience a tad. Some people might like this version, because they don't like batter as much, and just want the chicken, but for people like me who wants more crunch with their fried chicken, this wasn't really doing it for me. There's too thin of a layer of batter on these, it also felt very soggy, which to me makes it seem like it was cooked partially first, and then finished off in the fryer after, but due to it not having enough batter on it, it just won't crunch up enough after all the sauces have been put onto the wings. Again, perhaps the not as sauced versions might be better, but if you can only get that kind of crunch from it without heavy sauces, then it defeats the purpose on some levels. What's the verdict? I'm a fan. As far as bang for your buck, you get a ton of chicken for the price. The wings are also well portioned, and not tiny wings, so you get a lot of meat on each wing. The sauces here are pretty good, I liked the galbi, and will want to try the other stuff next time. The mandu was good, and surprisingly, their Tteokbokki was quite good as well, very chewy but in a good way. Only thing that was a let down a bit was the crunchiness of the wing, which I didn't really get any of from today's order. Who knows, maybe they're not usually like this, but it just didn't do it for me today. Maybe next time it'll be different, fingers crossed. Will be back!

I called to see if they accept Apple Pay as I forgot my wallet and they do! I ordered the spicy pork lunch special and upgraded to kimchi fried rice. The meal was really good but I think they could've added more rice. It took about 10 minutes but next time I'll call and place my order so it's ready for pick up. It's definitely a quick dine in spot but I will be back to try their other foods! 5/5 for lunch so far!

As much as I want to gatekeep this restaurant for my own gluttony, I have to pay my respects and share this find. I frequent nearly all the Korean fried chicken restaurants within Concord/Pleasant Hill and I don't plan on doing that anymore since finding Korean soul chicken. The chicken is something special. I'm not sure if it's how it's prepared or the quality of the ingredient. Besides being exceptionally juicy and tender, the flavor is reminiscent of Jidori chicken rather than its typical mass produced counterpart. The sauces enhance by being complex, rich, and contrasting rather than just overly sweet. The gimbab and sides have a very home made feel which I feel is very complimentary to the chicken. Did I mention that they're considerably cheaper than near by Korean fried chicken restaurants? The staff give a very mom/pop shop feel. Little words were exchanged, but the silent hospitality spoke volumes. This is not a fancy sit down restaurant, but I kinda like that. At one point, we were given a complimentary cup of tasty hot tea that's not on the menu. It was exactly what we needed after a large hearty meal. The area is losing a lot of special restaurants like Korean Soul Chicken. Give them a chance and you won't be disappointed.

We came to check this place since I always crave for chicken wings. Place was pretty empty when we came in so service was pretty fast. Our Server/Cashier was very polite so I really liked him. The only thing is the song they are playing was not it. The vibe was not it there. They need to hype it up with some K-Pop or any other songs that can invite more people and let people talk about. Food was okay I honestly didn't like how Kimchi Fried Rice it was whopping $6.00 bucks lol buttt buttttt I guess if you weren't that hungry it could feed two people. barely butt butt it was really good. Fried Chicken were great don't get me wrong but something was missing I am not quite sure what it is. I love how they put two rice cake in there. Of course I finished it. For all those we Spent $70.00 worth it enough that I stopped eating since I was full. Overall I shall try other flavors. Until next time.

Delicious lunch at Korean Soul Chicken! I ordered the pork bulgogi lunch plate. Super flavorful and a little spicy! My husband got the half order of Yang Nyum chicken which was a great portion and super flavorful!

Very tasty Korean food. Not fancy but good.. We wanted to try a second chicken dish but due to a misunderstanding ended up with two beef bulgoki and a kalbi 1/2 chicken instead. Empty containers at the end anyways! I'll try the second chicken dish my next time through -- and there will definitely be a next time. We just added a new place to our rotation. Yum! Thanks Korean Soul Chicken.

The Galbi Fried Chicken Wings are EXCELLENT! The food here is so yummy and satisfying. I have been thinking about the wings since I had them and I can't wait to go back. They are crispy and saucy perfection. You can't beat wings and beer but the beef plate was a close second. With kimchi fried rice that combo is heaven. The lunch plate seems like a really good deal so I'll be back during the week for lunch!

Today was the first time we visited Korean Soul Chicken, and would never have known it existed if we hadn't stumbled upon it! We can already tell we've found one of our new regular spots. The service is incredibly kind, the food is great (traditional Korean combined with soul food), the servings are generous (great value), and the music they play is fun bop after bop (Charlie Puth, etc.). The cooler of cold drinks & to-go boxes were also great touches. This place deserves all the business it can get! We'll be back. :-)

The place is clean and the food is good. My review would be a four if the chicken was crispy. I have no other complaints.

Ordered Galbi wings and rice cakes to-go. Service was quick and friendly. Sauce and flavor of both were top tier, super tasty without being salty. My one preference would have been for the chicken to be a bit more crispy. Nonetheless, will come back to try more from their menu.

The quantity of kimbap is large and the taste varies, making the taste in your mouth stand out. It's so delicious and clean, I like it.

Set orders begin at $10. Bites: tenders & crispy fries (10) -about 20 pieces 3/8" regular cut fries, crunchy, not mushy, tasted ok, nothing special -dab of cole slaw tastes fresh, crunchy, 3 pickles tart. -small piece of tender crunchy on outside, dryish bland on inside. Mild Thyme sauce added zest. Mac & cheese (4) initially tasted watery, bland, warm. When it cooled, cheese more pronounced, velvety, had a slight peppery kick. Also slight sodium aftertaste. 3.5 stars. service lackluster. Tender passable. Mac Cheese is the star. Quantiy/pricing reasonable.
