Been thinking about tonkatsu for awhile. Met up with some friends after work. It was early but the inside was a little crowded already so we got a table outside. I had combination pork loin, pork fillet and chicken katsu. The difference between the loin and fillet is that the loin has more fat and the fillet is more lean. I liked the loin the best. The meat was tender and not chewy or hard to eat. It was cooked just right. They are running a coupon also, but one entree get one 50% off. Such a great deal. Service: Went during the opening week just before peak time for dinner. Waited about 15 minutes before getting seated at the bar. I had no reservations but needed to sign in. During dinner, servers were attentive to refills. Price: I got a four piece tenderloin pork katsu. Super tasty at its price. Comes with a "refill" of shredded cabbage too. Food: The crispness of the panko on the juicy tenderloin was cooked to perfection. The house dressing for the shredded cabbage has a nice flavor to make me want to eat my vegetables. I would love to give 5 stars but the room capacity is smaller than I thought it would be. So come here, eat fast, and get out so others can enjoy their food and service. Grateful I don't have to drive all the way to Kapahulu to have great tonkatsu! Although they don't offer the same items as tonkatsu Tamafuji.. (hint hint, koromo please add the cheese option!) they serve a quality tonkatsu much closer to home for me. I ordered the larger portion pork loin katsu teishoku and my boyfriend had the chicken katsu curry. Both come with rice and the unlimited cabbage with dressing. The teishoku comes with daikon kimchi, tsukemono, and a miso soup. The chicken katsu curry looks like a small portion but my boyfriend was pretty surprise at how full he got off of it. The pork loin was juicy and flavorful, and very crispy on the outside. I like that they give a generous amount of tonkatsu sauce as well as hot mustard. The only girl is that for such a small restaurant... service was very slow for 7 pm on a weeknight. we were seated for quite a long time without so much as a greeting or water brought to our table so that would be my only complaint. I don't even remember what space was here before Koromo but so glad we tried this place for our work lunch. Usually, we go to curry house but this place was a must try. Service was great. Daryl at the front did a great job with our initial customer service greeting and Sho (I think that was his name) did an awesome job with making sure he answered all of our questions about the menu and got our food to us in a timely manner. Everything was so good. The salad with the miso dressing was just refreshing. I ordered the ebi fry curry and the portions were just right. My coworkers tried the chicken katsu curry and they enjoyed it too. Don't let the price discourage you from trying this place out. It does not disappoint. I was at Pearlridge and decided that I needed to try Koromo. They do not take reservations but when we went at around 7pm, we had to wait about 15 minutes. But the great part is that you can walk around and they will call you when your table is ready. Once we got in the restaurant is small but they have dividers up to make it feel like you have your own private area. We ordered two pork loin Katsu sets and they came out with tsukemono (spiced takuwan and pickled vegetables), rice (brown or white), and miso soup. The Katsu came out quickly after with cabbage. The tsukemono was different from other places I have been too but it was made in house and was tasty. The Katsu came out crispy and tender. My girls and I loved this place!! We all had the pork loin teishoku and ordered a side of curry to share. The server also brought us some FukuJin-zuke pickles for our curry as well. The pork was juicy with a crispy coating. I don't eat rice that much so I tried the curry on the cabbage instead of the miso or ginger dressings provided. It was sooo good!! The Kim Chee veges we're so good! Slightly sweet with a nice kick and snap to it. It was nice to eat leisurely and not feel rushed especially since there's not a whole lot of seating without opening the outside tables. The food was excellent and service was consistent considering it was a little busy. We left full and content. Definitely coming back for more. So glad they have a great tonkatsu place in Aiea! We had a great overall experience. The tonkatusu was perfect, not too dry! Despite getting seated around closing time, our waiter was very patient and accommodating. The best part of this place is the unlimited rice and salad, definitely take advantage of that! I haven't gotten chicken this juicy since Okinawa airport. Craving chicken katsu, I found this place on yelp. Located in Downtown Pearlridge, I arrived just before they opened. This gave me more opportunity to look at their menu and window advertising. I was only going to get the chicken katsu but the advertised sando got my attention. So what does any good yelper do for their community, he/she gets both. There is indoor seating service but I chose takeout. Opening the box with my sando was like opening the briefcase in Pulp Fiction, I just stared at my food for a few seconds in awww. My nose filled up with this wonderful aroma and my eyes just watered with pure happiness. Think Mark Wiens. (I know you read my Crazy Asian Taco review). My sandwich was deconstructed so not too get soggy. One bun with the lettuce, the other bun next to it with the chicken on top and all the sauces in take out cups. It the Japanese mentality of simple is best. Presentation beautiful and taste just damn great. It was juicy. Juicy enough that you need a new napkin every time you take a bite. The sauce was great, the bun held firm, and that chicken was seasoned to perfection. I was too full to eat my original meal of the chicken katsu plate but it looked just as tasty. Overall five stars. Yes, COVID times, cannot do full capacity and maybe take out order was jamming around right past noon, understand it took long for food to come out. No more lunch menu, no more grinding sesame, ok but you cannot cut corners and make quality go down. 1. Miso soup watery and bland. Absolutely not Japanese, broth no flavor. Just miso in hot water. Bite of tofu, no flavor. 2. Oil on bottom of pork filet. Filet doesn't even have fat. So you need to change frying oil more frequently. 3. Shredded cabbage watery. Don't want any water near my tonkatsu.... 4. If you need to cut budget, no need big slice of lemon with pork. Just do it for seafood. Good part was that rice was good. I guess my mistake for expecting Japan standards but I did hope. No cut corner to be comparable to Bairin or Tamafuji and please change oil more often to spare me the heartburn..... Small little place where AGU Ramen used to be and before that Cold Stone Creamery. Definitely showing my age there. We ordered the pork tenderloin teishoku and chicken katsu curry. The pork tenderloin teishoku came out and it looked huge compared to the chicken katsu. We were a little disappointed at that. Until we got to eating it. Though, it was only four pieces in the katsu curry. They were pretty big pieces and proportional to the curry and rice in my opinion. Only downfall I'd say is the service was a little slow considering they had what seemed to be three people out front and only a very limited amount of tables. So good!!! Located in Pearlridge Shopping Center's downtown location. I did the lunch takeout special with the pork loin katsu and it was amazing!!! I love the rice. It wasn't starchy, sticky, it was perfect. The Katsu was juicy and the Katsu sauce was perfectly sweet and tangy. I love the pickled vegetables, it really helped to cut down the heaviness from all the food. I loved the thinly, cut cabbage and sesame dressing. I definitely could have done less cabbage. Was quite disappointed. Pork fillet was not good and for 9.50 a piece I expected a little more that this, inflation or not. Here come the kicker, I did not get any sauce with the food at all. I called them twice (around noon and right before I headed out afterwork) to confirm whether it should come with sauce or not. Both times, staff said yes. When I got there, the staff said, "oh for side order, they don't come with any sauce". I was dumbfounded that for 9.50 a piece of small pork fillet. there is nothing with it. Something different that Koromo does that most restaurants don't do is that the hostess asks for ID and writes your name, address, and phone number down for you (I guess just to make sure you're not writing down a random contact info). Temperature checks are taken by contactless, digital thermometer. They open at 4:30pm for dinner. We arrived around 5:30pm. If you arrive later without a reservation it might be busy. There's a menu holder so both you and your friend can both look at the menu at the same time and probably so you don't have to touch it (contactless). The sesame seeds already come crushed (for those who don't want to put in the work), but it takes away from the experience of grinding it yourself (probably a COVID thing...?). I got the Ebi Fry & Pork Filet Katsu Teishoku and my bf got the Pork Loin, Filet & Chicken Katsu Teishoku. I wish they had a Ebi Fry & Kaki Fry combination that way we could have tried everything in the combination section. But all in all, everything tasted great! For the Katsu sauce, they have mild and spicy. Personally, I found slight to no difference between the two sauces so if you don't do well with spicy, and want to try the spicy, go for it (thumbs up). For the shredded cabbage, they have miso and vinegar sesame dressing. Both are delicious, but we liked the vinegar sesame a bit more than the miso. And just FYI, it's UNLIMITED cabbage and rice! Be careful though, you can get full off of cabbage. Murphy's law states that "If something can go wrong, it will." But are you familiar with Cole's Law? Every time my mom comes to visit, this is her favorite, must-eat place (and usually the first meal on her list). We always order the ebi fry and pork loin katsu. They are always cooked to perfection. The ebi is crispy, juicy, bouncy (odd description for shrimp but if you try it you'll understand), and the katsu is never, ever overcooked. Just thick, golden crispy on the outside, and juicy on the inside. The sides that they come with pair just perfectly to cut the little bit of oil from the bite. Rice is hot and fluffy and the shredded cabbage salad is unlimited. The whole course is very filling. I would love to go more often but it is a bit pricey for my wallet. However, In my opinion, it's justified by the portion, qualty and taste. read more

Ordered take-out on two different occasions during the lockdown. Both times we had to wait 45 minutes due to many others with the same idea soon so call ahead for pick-up! We got the po'boy sando, i.e. kaki fry sandwiches. Mmmmmmm!!! Gimme mo'! Sooooo good. Generous portion of crispy panko crusted oysters slapped into brioche buns with pickles, thinly shredded cabbage, a thick slice of tomato, house tatar and siracha mayo on the side. Not oily at all and not soggy. I want another one just thinking about it. Next time we got to the pork loin tonkatsu sando (sandwich), tonkatsu sauce accompanied, and spicy side sauce. Crunchy exterior, thick, juicy, tender, fatty in that oh so delicious not too overwhelming way inside, making something deep-fried taste fresh! I've been to Koromo a handful of times. We shared 3 chicken katsu and 3 pork katsu between 6 of us. My favorite is the chicken because it's so tender and juicy. The waiter was friendly and attentive to check on us after delivering our food, then offered more cabbage and refill for my soda. The restaurant is somewhat small but comfortable. Very pleased with the service and the food. The only reason it's a 4 star rating is they missed packing one curry. We had an order of 5 lunch bentos and it was all packed and ready to go on time. Koromo pearlridge is my husband and my go to place to eat. We eat there at least a couple times per month. We have never had anything that we haven't absolutely loved, and looked forward to having again! My husband loves the Pork Katsu Teishoku. I love the combo of the chicken Katsu Teishoku with the Ebi fry. The chicken is cooked to perfection and is juicy and never dried out but crispy and ono-licious! You won't find a better shrimp tempura- not to much on the outside, but big juicy shrimp. My mouth starts to salivate just thinking about it. I kid you not!! You can't go wrong regardless of what you order. It's just hard to break loose from our favs! Great people over there. We eat in and take out. Both will get you coming back for more. Heard about Koromo from a friend and wanted to try it out, since my wife and I love tonkatsu. We don't have any authentic Japanese restaurants on the Leeward side, mostly local Japanese food, and because I had spent 5 years in Japan, I was really excited! We both had the fillet katsu teishoku dinner and were sorely disappointed. There was no crispy crunch to the katsu; it was soggy and very oily. My wife had an upset stomach when we got home, most likely due to how oily the tonkatsu was. Also, what's very strange was the katsu came in fairly large uncut pieces, so you had to cut them yourself with a knife. In Japan, Japanese restaurants serve everything in bite size pieces since chopsticks are the only utensil (no knives). The wait staff were very courteous, professional and attentive, so the service was great. The kitchen was out of sight, so couldn't tell if the chef/cook was from Japan or not (which is usually a reliable indicator of how authentic the food is), but based on the way the tonkatsu was prepared, I highly doubt it. Chock it up for another local style Japanese restaurant for the Leeward side. Very, very disappointed and won't go back. read more

I've had some good Pork Loin Katsu on O'ahu, and it's always a treat to find a place that's close and convenient. Quick service, cute music, and comfy seating. They have you grind seeds to make your personal sauce. That's such a fun and interactive experience! Let's just say I'd rather go to Menchanko-Tei or Tonkatsu Tamafuji... The wait wasn't that bad, they told us about 30-45 minutes and we went to go and check our place in line at about the 45 min mark since my husband said he noticed a lot of people went in before us. Since we asked, the host was able to sit us down after a party just left. Not sure if we would've been seated later if we didn't check.. One thing I didn't like right off the bat, it's really crampy and small. We were seated at the table right next to the entrance and the door literally right behind us. It was uncomfortable. Miso soup and tsukemono were brought out pretty quickly and the timing of the entree's were exceptional. However, the last two pieces of my Tonkatsu were pink in the middle. My friends and I were immediately concerned about eating it since it's pork. I had to wait about 10 mins before we could get our waiter's attention, and finally asked the host at the front. (We noticed it's hard to get their attention as other tables were waving and they were just on their phones by the bar) He kept saying it was normal and I had a feeling he didn't want to take it back even though he offered (although his tone wasn't very welcoming). I should have just insisted on a new one because by the time I got to enjoy my food, the bottom of the katsu was soggy. I enjoyed the cabbage and dressings, just not the actual entree. Also, we asked if the dressings contained any peanuts since my friend is allergic. Our waiter was unsure at the time so he made a call and eventually got back to us with an answer. A colleague and I called to verify they were open and the male who answered the phone was extremely rude but it was almost end of the year and we wanted to eat some good food. Upon arrival we were told that their was a 10 minute wait, looked around and noticed there were only 3 tables seated, (2) two tops and (1) three top. We asked if we could sit somewhere and was told rudely no. We decided to walk to see our options but returned in about 7 minutes and noticed 2 males were seated at the counter. Asked the same employee (Local Asian ponytail) why were we told we couldn't sit but they were allowed to? He said that it was bcuz they were just having beers, which is bs because they were seen eating later. Clearly upset I stressed my frustration and asked for a manager, male stated he was the manager and that I should leave or he'll call security. I asked him if he had a problem with me specifically or is just this way. The kitchen manager (Leanne?) intervened and asked Daryl to remove himself. She offered to seat us if we were still willing and offered a discount; we stayed and asked that no discount be applied. Jamee was our server and did a fantastic job. Later I found out that Daryl is not a manager and is actually a Lead Server (LS). Earlier I saw a white male with an aloha shirt tell same male when we first arrived to stop what he was doing and take care of the customers. Found out he was the owner/president, wish I could've spoken with him but he stepped out. I was in the industry for over 15 yrs and I understand having bad days but this guy is just not cut off for that line of work. If it wasn't for the two ladies I would probably never return.
