And guess what, it ended up being one of the best meals we had during the entire trip....maybe even the best. I really wanted to like this place, unfortunately it fell way short of expectations. It was the boss's birthday so we decided to give Ono Steak & Shrimp a try after good reviews from a neighboring company. I called in the order because when I attempted to order online there was a $17 service fee! Gentleman on the phone was nice. He said they were out of tossed salad and asked if we'd like to sub rice or noodles. Once I got everyone's preference I stated I would like to sub with the noodles. He said, "There's an upcharge for that.". There was only 4 of us that subbed the noodles and when he gave me the total it was an extra $20!! But hey, the company's paying so carry on. Three of us had the shrimp and steak - Boss said way too salty, coworker 1 said it's like minced steak, not good, coworker 2 "eh it's okay" Co worker 3 had the fish and shrimp - noodles too salty, fish just okay. I had the salmon and shrimp - Salmon completely burnt. I tried to eat it anyway but had to peel off the burned skin just to make it palatable. The salmon itself way overcooked obviously. Not something they should have served to a customer. I thought the noodles were fine and the shrimp was just fine but it seemed a little weird that everyone got a different shrimp count on the combos. One person 4, one person 5, one person 6. A little lacking in consistency but that's just me nitpicking. I tried a piece of my coworkers steak and didn't really care for it. The steak seemed soft but the flavor just wasn't there for me. I would have liked to see why the bill was so much higher for a sub noodle (I'm assuming they charged for a full noodle side on all four) but they didn't include the receipt with the order. I thought this was a remodel and new location from the original Ono Steak & Shrimp shack in Waimanalo but it's not.. sadly. Me and my wife had a nice experience here. We ordered two plates of the shrimp and steak and a plate of seimen fried noodles with garlic butter. The steak and shrimp plate was really simple and didn't have much flavor. The steak bites were a bit too small and the shrimp wasn't coated with garlic butter or anything; just plain and slightly cooked. I was hoping they'd serve the plates with Mac salad instead of the salad but they don't. The noodles were way too salty. The diced bbq pork was also salty. You definitely need a large beverage with the meal to stay hydrated. Please note, it's $1 for a refill as well. I know this place is booming with plenty of regulars which is great but for me and my wife, we prefer a different style of steak and shrimp. This wasn't it but that's ok! Lunch in Kalihi, Honolulu, Hawai'i... Ono Steak & Shrimp popped up on my Yelp feed a few times, so I decided to give it a try. It opened about a month ago. This is the third location for Ono Steak & Shrimp. The first two shops are in Kapolei and Waipahu. Located on Waiakamilo Road, this site used to house a popular old school eatery - before they decided to retire. The current cashier said that this business Ono Steak & Shrimp) is here to stay! She was very friendly and welcoming! The young man was also very kind! I asked where to sit... for the coolest spot... they pointed to the back table... LOL! Thanks! The interior looks modern, clean and bright! It's very spacious with many tables and chairs for dining in. I'm thinking about bringing a group here... because the prices are reasonable and the portions are generous! I got the 4 ounce Steak with shrimp. I was so happy when I opened the container and found that the Steak was cut up for me! That makes it VERY convenient! The meat was tender and well-seasoned! The shrimp had a creamy, buttery garlic sauce - rich and yummy! The rice and green salad (with thousand island dressing) were nice sides. I visited recently and unfortunately had a frustrating experience regarding both the billing and the food quality. ​First, there was a discrepancy in pricing. The menu clearly stated a price of $22 for my meal, but I was charged $24 on the final bill. I recommend checking your receipts here to ensure the menu prices are being honored. ​Regarding the meal, i ordered the steak and the salmon. Unfortunately, both dishes were so heavily salted that they were unpleasant to eat. I went on Halloween Day to meet Nadine C. to exchange party favors since she was not going to be able to attend a birthday dinner for our regular group the following Thursday. She was dressed up in full LA Dodgers uniform with all of her stuffed kids in tow. Ono Steak & Shrimp is in the old Meg's Drive Inn spot on Waiakamilo which I went to about thirty years ago and never went back to, not because of anything negative. The owners of Meg's retired after being a great greasy spoon which endured for decades. It became a couple other eateries after Megs, but they closed fairly quickly. This location is in the heart of an industrial area so if you want to survive you need to provide reasonably price food in sufficient quantity served up quickly to satisfy the appetites of the blue-collared workers in the vicinity. Whether Ono Steak & Shrimp will meet those attributes is the question. Hopefully, they will. I ordered the steak and shrimp plate and Nadine C. treated me to lunch. Thanks, Nadine ... it wasn't necessary but much appreciated. When I opened the carton, it looked like a lot of food. While it was a little deceiving because of the mound of rice the entrees were fully covering, it still was a lot of food. The entrees were a little salty for me but, very tasty. I think I will return with my regular weekly lunch pals Alan & Sean because every time I remark that the food wherever we are eating is a little salty, Sean agrees and says he likes it. The dining room is Spartan in typical local style and the air-conditioned but fully windowed dining area creates cool and warm zones, so choose where you sit based on your preference. I have a funny story about the building complex. Right next door to Ono Steak & Shrimp is a hostess bar called Golden Tree which we used to frequent years ago because my drinking buddy knew the then proprietor Mama Lee. My handyman friend Li drove us to the bar in his van, a beat up white Ford Econoline with scrapes and dents in every imaginable body location. The van was also packed to the max with tools, new plumbing and electrical parts, and used parts salvaged from his past repair jobs. A hostess on break smoking at a bench right outside the door watched us pull up and park right in front of the bar, jumped up and ran back in the bar and said, "Mama, some homeless guy parked in your parking space." The second visit was just okay. The third time, I added a 1 oz side of steak, and it looked like they gave me closer to 2-3 oz, which was awesome. The next time I ordered the same thing, the steak portion looked like a true 1 oz (which is technically what I paid for, so no complaints there!). Then on our most recent visit, I received extra steak again. Now I'm just confused about what the standard portion is supposed to be. More importantly, the chicken has never been as juicy as it was that first time. Since then, it's consistently been dry and a bit tough. I always passed by this spot since I frequent the area pretty often and due to my job being nearby. I was always curious and finally made the attempt to come by to try it out. So glad I finally did! Apparently this is their third location and it's locally owned (love that) and they are from the westside. I ordered the 8oz steak and shrimp combo with tossed greens and white rice along with a root beer. The steak was very soft and flavorful , the portion was pretty big , the shrimp I also really enjoyed as that's my go to , to eat with steak. Very garlicky and flavorful as well. My only thing I wish they did was offer more shrimp in the plate but either way I still enjoyed it all. The inside of the eatery is very clean which I appreciated and simple! Since you can see the back of their kitchen while you wait , I noticed the back also seems very clean and tidy. That's important especially when a lot of establishments don't live up to sanitary regulations and all. It was good vibes all around and the girl who took my order was very personable and kind! Ordered a medium rare steak/BBQ chicken combo plate and the order came pretty fast, about 5 minutes or a little over. Opening the plate, I was surprised the steak and chicken are cut up for you! Dug in and was captivated by the great seasoning and taste! The steak can be a bit on the salty side, but I personally like it. Chicken tasted great as well, and the BBQ on top was sweet and tangy. My other half and I ordered takeout from here lastnight. 2 plates came out to $55 and some change. We sub the rice for noodles in both plates. My other half got the steak & chicken, I ordered the chicken & fish. We were so excited to try this place, but why did the food especially the noodles taste like the cook just dumped the whole bottle of salt in our food??!!!! The only thing that was decent was the steak. Everything else was like pouring salt in your mouth! We won't be trying this location ever again. The staff was friendly and the vibe was nice, but I was a little disappointed with the steak; the texture was a bit mushy and salty, and one side was burnt. It was also cut into small cubes, which wasn't quite what I expected. Decided to eat here while waiting for my rims to be installed at Auto Customs. Walked in to gospel music BLARING through a Bose speaker in the corner. I'm baptized Catholic, not active, but I don't shove that down anyone's throat if you know what I mean. If you want to play it for the kitchen then put the speaker in the kitchen. This speaker was staged in a corner playing loudly right next to where you place your order. Cashier is asking me all kinds of questions like how I want my steak and salad dressing and I can't even hear her. I told her the music was too loud, she just said I'll let them know. My husband chose a table in the farthest opposite corner of this speaker. Didn't matter, he couldn't even hear the lady announcing our order number, even though we were the only people in the joint. Grabbed our food and decided to sweat balls and eat outside instead. The steak was soft but not too robust in flavor, I guess it all dripped onto the rice.
