tl;dr this pizza joint prides itself on massive slices -- which unfortunately offer very little excitement beyond their size Koronet Pizza's "Jumbo" slices are indeed enormous -- the 1/8 slices are cut from 33" pies. With ample portions and low prices, Koronet is hailed by Columbia undergrads as the quintessential campus late-night eat. The Washington Heights outpost, however, is an early bird, closing before 9PM each night. This location sports oppressive fluorescent lighting, worn faux wooden floors, and a mismatched assortment of tilings and finishes. Pies and empanadas are displayed prominently up front, while the menu is chalked onto a side wall deeper into the space. A few bar counter seats are crammed along the left wall, but nearly all folks take their orders to go. During my visit for weekday dinner, I immediately ordered amid a slow-but-steady stream of takeout customers. After a quick heat in the pizza oven, I was handed a heavy red cafeteria tray, nearly completely covered by my two slices. The ultra-thin crust was blander than white bread and somehow crisp on the bottom but gummy in the middle. Nonetheless, it held up surprisingly to the hefty load of toppings. Too bad said toppings are similarly lackluster: the sauce screams bargain bin tomato paste, and the cheese is nearly flavorless. Even the added pepperoni slices miss the mark, providing almost no pizzazz to wholly a dull pizza. Finally, the slices quickly cooled down from the oven, and my first one was already lukewarm before I finished it. I received slices from a fully intact pepperoni pie, so I figured they must be as fresh as possible If this is the best that Koronet has to offer, then I shudder at the thought of a Koronet slice left sitting. My duo of slices brought me from moderately hungry to moderately full. Sure the slices are enormous, and yes they are affordable (a slice of cheese will run you $4.50, while pepperoni bumps you to $5.50). This place is not very large but it provides a great NYC pizza experience. It's in an out within minutes and a very no-nonsense spot. We arrived during rush hour on a Saturday afternoon. There was a small line outside waiting to order. The line went by quite fast (within 5 minutes), and the line kept growing. We asked for a single slice of cheese pizza (cost $4), they reheated our slice back in the oven, was handed this piping-hot large slice on top of two paper plates (was barely holding on, had to use both hands to carry). The slice was able to feed two people. If I ate it by myself, it would have cooled down before I was able to finish it. The crust was thin and savory, there was plenty of tomato sauce, and the cheese was great. Fast and rapid service, great pizza, large serving size. A very no-nonsense spot that I was able to enjoy. Sometimes size matters. If you're looking for a gigantic piece of New York Style pizza, this is where you get it. I don't think you'll find a slice with more length or girth anywhere else. It might not be the best flavor, (I found the sauce a little bland and the cheese wasn't anything to write home about) but it is Large and it is pizza and it will fill you up. Normally this gets a 3 star rating. But, of course, their gimmick and their customer service brings this to a solid 4 stars. Their slices are enormous. When I say the size of a baby, I mean it. These bad boys are HUGE. Their quality is that of your typical dollar slice joint, though, so, again, not great. But the price is also equivalent of a dollar slice. The size of 3 slices = $3. Seems like a fair trade to me. Koronet is also located really close to a hospital so if you were NPO for weeks or maybe you're drowning your sadness in pizza, or celebrating someone surviving - I don't know your life - this is convenient for you. Not much flavor in the sauce but I would never say "watery" like every other critical review. It taste like Pizza Hut's marinara sauce. I added red pepper flakes and Italian seasoning and the pizza was fine. VERY greasy. Not like the kind of greasy warn you about in middle school Health class, like chest pain you-can-feel-arteries-closing grease level. Dab it with one of the 40 napkins they give you. Due to their being a minimum on delivery orders, I also got a chicken parm hero. Eh. Not much flavor, and at $6.00, not really worth it. A great pizza slice if you're hungry and want a lot per $.
