Returned to one of my favorite pizza eateries and had to share the exact same meal that made me feel that way. We started with two fabulous drinks: An Espresso Martini and their signature Limoncello Margarita. We shared the Shaved Brussel Sprout Salad and it was fabulous. The bits of bacon, combined with the spiciness of the pepper spices, made this a perfect starter. The entree was also shared and it was the Spicoli 2.0 Pizza. I cannot recommend this pie, enough. You will taste flavors that you've probably never experienced before with a pizza. Also, the different textures of the arugula, creaminess of the cheese, and the perfect crust will make it a memorable selection. For dessert, we shared the Buttermilk Panna Cotta. Each spoonful of those strawberries, dancing with the firm custard and glaze, made this a stupendous cap to the meal. read more

Vile, disgusting pizza. The pies are aggressively salty, overpriced, and really have very little flavor and character. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It also did not help that I was seated at the bar... Hoping to salvage the meal, I ordered their Chicken Parmesan. It was the Hail Mary pass that unfortunately did not connect. The cutlets are overcooked and dry, and the red sauce cooked with it has minimal tomato flavor. At least the spaghetti is cooked to a nice al dente and mellow garlic butter flavor, but like the sauce cooked in, it is also minimal. Came here twice, once for happy hour and sat at the bar. The bartender was super friendly and nice and we loved sitting there. It was my friend's birthday and they brought a cake which was a nice touch as well. We started with the happy hour spritz ($10) which was great and moved to beers ($7). A while back, I made some "pizza for dinner" plans in NYC with my Pasta-Crazed Compadre. We talked about the kind of pizza restaurant we wanted to dine at right before we both boarded our respective flights for the Big Apple. The challenge my Compadre posed for me was to find us a decidedly upscale venue with top-shelf pies. I did some Yelp searching on the in-bound flight, and I settled on B-Side Pizza because it had over 1400 hundred Yelp reviews with a 4.5 average, it was within walking distance from my Times Square hotel, and (most importantly) it had what sounded like some seriously legit pies. Game on! B-Side is decidedly different from my usual NYC pizza haunts. It's fairly upscale as pizza joints go; no back-alley entrance, no greasy counters to lean against, no knife fights in the back... The pizzas here are not served by the slice; they're Neapolitan rather than strictly NY-style. Baked in a Coal-fired pizza oven, their pies all have unique names to suggest the toppings used. My Pastra-crazed Compadre and I walked in to B-Side at around 10:30pm. It was just as well that our visit was spontaneous, as they don't take reservations. Despite the late hour on a Thursday night, the place was damn-near full! The host/waiter who greeted us offered us a choice of either two seats at the bar or a pair of seats at a window counter; we opted for the former so we could watch (and smell!) the pizzas being made. My Campadre and I had both just flown in from the West Coast (me from SoCal and her from SF) and we were both hungry enough to join the Donner Party. We decided to start things off with two pies to share, and an order of Brocollini to illustrate exactly how civilized we are ;-) Despite how crowded the venue was, service was excellent and totally on-point. My Pastra-crazed Compadre got a spot-on cocktail recommendation, and I got a couple of recommendations (with tastes of each included) for some of the local draft beer. The first thing to arrive was the Brocollini; while it was acceptable (given how famished we were) it was rubbery, undercooked, and quite unappetizing. We both struggled to eat a few bites, then gave up and asked our served to take it away. When we told him what we thought of the dish, he removed it from our bill with no questions asked. Our two pies arrived at the same time. Here's what we got: - Spicoli ($21) - tomato, mozzarella, roasted mushrooms, carmalized onions, Parmesan Apparently named for Sean Penn's surfer-Dude character in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, this pie was pretty darn good. The dough was perfectly cooked and flavorful,with just the right amount of char, and the toppings were all obviously premium and very generously applied. I could easily have devoured one of these all by myself, but then I tried a slice from the Killer Bee... - Killer Bee ($24) - tomato, mozzarella, sopressata, garlic purée, chili oil, and honey (infused) This amazing pie was obviously named for the principle creators of the most distinctive ingredient used herein - the honey. Like the Spicoli, the dough is totally legit and perfectly cooked, but then they take it up a notch. The combination of the sopressata and the honey that's infused into the cheese and sauce create a unique flavor profile that I've never run across before. While I'm no stranger to dipping my pizza crusts into honey, the notion of infusing honey into the toppings is simply brilliant! Between the two of us, we completely demolished our Killer Bee and about half of the Spicoli. Not that there was anything wrong with the latter, it's just that the former was so damn GOOD! When next I return to NYC, I'll make a point to visit B-Side again to enjoy another Killer Bee, and I look forward to checking out one or two of their other pies too. I'll visit Prince Street pizza again as well; while both venues are exceptional examples of what they each do best, there's unquestionably room in my life for both ends of this particular spectrum :-) read more

Big shout-out to Cara T for suggesting B Side to me for my recent NYC trip! This pizza. LORT! It was creative, delicious and perfect for our group. Some highlights: * Interesting pizza! After enjoying so much pizza in my life, it can be hard to be crafty with it, but B Side does this so well. The Killer Bee pizza -- I can see why this is a Yelper fave. Made with house marinara, mozzarella, sopressata, garlic puree, chili oil and honey, this is sweet with just a bit of spicy bite to it. And the Shrimp Scampi pizza -- why isn't this more of a thing?! I also appreciated how this pizza was cooked so that the vodka sauce and mozzarella held the shrimp in place rather than them sliding off your slice. * The crust on these pizzas was also a highlight. Again, I've had my fair share of pizza, so I've learned just how much a great, chewy crust can add to a pie. This had that. * The calamari was a delight. No notes. Would get those again. * B Side sports a great beer, wine and cocktail list -- as you can imagine by the fact that "wine bar" is in its name. And this pizza can definitely be dressed up by a good cocktail. We were able to get a table for the five of us easily on a Friday night. And our server was efficient and friendly. It's not the BEST meal I've ever had but for late night - 11 pm it was super delicious (best thing we ate that day) and the staff was super friendly. We sat outside, right below the sign and we had a lot of little green friends, but they use wooden plates and bowls which is super cute. We shared the brocollini - tons of lemon and capers and cheese, and the raddichio ceasar - not a lot of the ceasar taste but TONS of cheesse and delicious nonetheless. It's woodfire pizza, so thin and chewy crust. I will say our margherita pizza was a bit soggy but it wasn't that bad. It's small inside, 4 booth tables, two two tops, 8 bar spots, 10 counter spots and several patio outdoor tables too. We ordered a kale salad, Spicoli 2.0 and a Killer bee pizza. $67.50. The Pizza place checked off of this trip, the most carby and cheesy meal of the week for us. Don't do much gluten or cheese at all. The kale salad is good, one of the better kale salads I have eaten. There are outlets by the counters, a nice plus for us out of towners running low on charge while walking around in the city site seeing. Watching our pizzas being turned in the brick oven, that's good stuff. The pies here are smaller, which is all fine. The Spicoli was the better of the two pizzas. The service was fast despite ordering within and hour of the kitchen closing. I got the Killer Bee with pepperoni and it was everything I ever wanted. We ordered Burrata and Shaved Brussels Sprout Salad to start - both were tasty, and burrata came with a HUGE air filled focaccia (see pic, idk how else to describe) which was very filling. We also ordered Carbonara Pizza and Killer Bee Pizza - we liked the carbonara more and the poached egg was a very nice touch, but probably wouldn't get killer bee again as it wasn't as memorable. My friend and I went to B Side Pizza at 4pm (their opening) on a Wednesday. We were the only people in there for a while, but around 5pm, it started to get full. Their interior has a classy ambiance yet remains more intimate because of the size. I got the Marge ($18) and my friend got the Mr. White ($21). As previous reviewers have mentioned, the pizzas are pretty wet. However, I have an oil sensitivity and it was not triggered here, so it must have not been too bad. Personally, their ratios are a bit off to me. The pizza is so thin (which probably contributes to the wet issue), and the rest of the dough seems to be put into the crust. I would prefer a more even split, especially because parts of the crust were charred. For flavors, the margherita did not taste like the standard. It was salty and the freshness of the basil and mozzarella were not coming through. My friend's white pizza had significantly better flavors! Service here was amazing! Everyone was extremely attentive, even when they started getting busy. Our water was constantly refilled. They were also extremely quick to clear plates, although that could make people feel rushed. On our last full evening together in New York, it was finally my time to lead the group around to the places I wanted to go. Before drinks, we decided on an Italian dinner and headed to B Side Pizza. Once we were there, I realized it was a place that came highly rated and I had bookmarked, so it worked out for all of us. The restaurant sits on a cozy quiet street, with seating inside and outside in a street box also with cozy lights and seats. We ordered a few different pizzas, some of our group got pasta, and an arugula salad to share. The brick oven dough pizzas were cooked to perfection, with just the right amount of char and no sogginess. Greens and vegetables were crisp and flavorful - I had missed this about the East Coast. Our server was great - attentive and friendly. It was a busy and popular place, which also spoke volumes about it. With so many good reviews, I honestly thought the pizza would be a bit better. I ordered the Meat Packing Pizza ($25), and the first thing I noticed was that the pizza dough was too thin/soft on the bottom so it was very difficult to pick up each slice without it bending and all the toppings immediately falling off. The pizza was also generally too salty, especially with all the salty meats on this one. There were large pieces of prosciutto on the pizza, which were too chewy and difficult to eat unless you just ate it in one bite. I'm not saying the pizza was really that bad, but it certainly wasn't that good. The interior is decently sized with ample space between each table, which made for a comfortable dining experience. They have some modern decor including interesting lighting along the walls. The bathrooms are tiny and feel like airplane bathrooms though. Our waitress was average friendliness. The service speed was decent. It was not that busy on a Friday night, as only a few tables were occupied. Overall, I was not too pleased with this pizza, but I cannot say how good/bad the other pizza options are here - it is possible that I just happened to pick one of the worse options. Pleasantly surprised at the pizza here, which I realize might be a bit of an unfair phrase to start a review. Don't get me wrong -- everything we ordered was good. I'm a fan of a wood-fired pizza, for sure. And the char on these was nice, although the crust was, sadly, a bit soggy on one of them. The two pizzas we ordered -- the killer bee and the D.F. -- were tasty (particularly the latter, I thought, which was actually the one my husband chose. With the chorizo and chilis, it almost had a Thai flavor to it. My husband preferred the killer bee.) It's a good sign and a bad sign when you see someone else get food and have ordering regrets. I wish I'd gotten a salad and the pizza bianco -- the latter looked so good, and all the salads I saw come by our table looked amazing. So I guess we'll have to come back. Service was good. The pizza always impresses me, and the wide variety of intriguing specialty pies covers a lot of ground. The pizzas are great to share, but they're not huge, so get plenty for the table. I've also enjoyed the pasta dishes here; ask what's new and exciting, or stick with the tried and true classics. The staff will be happy to help you find the perfect bottle of wine to pair with your meal. For such a down-to-earth establishment, I feel a little elegant whenever I eat here. The pizza here is solid. I got the Killer Bee and Drunken Clam. I love the texture of the woodfire thin crust pizza - it's very light. I enjoyed The Killer Bee over the Drunken Clam because I like the sweetness from the honey. The clam sounds weird but I could barely taste the clam. It was mainly the chewy texture of the clam that reminded me it was there. Can't go wrong! read more
