I went around 7PM on a Tuesday evening. Parking is very limited so give yourself some time if you're on a schedule. I got a very old timey vibe as soon as I walked in. It's a dimly lit room and white table cloth. I think Kosta was the old man in the back by the kitchen that walked to the front to greet me. He sat me and someone immediately brought water. Then came a loaf of bread with butter but the server was tied up. After 5-10 minutes Kosta walked back over and took my order. I'd never been before so I got Greek Combo to try a little bite of everything. It came with a soup or salad and I went with the salad. There wasn't much to the salad but the dressing was very good. Shortly after the Combo arrived with green beans and lemon potato. There was a nice variety but nothing that stood out. I doubt I'll go back. read more

And then there is Kostas Cafe on Greenville Avenue, a small white building with green trim that has been serving authentic Greek food in Dallas since 1987, where I go for both of those things and also for Jimmy, who is a force of nature disguised as a waiter and the single greatest conversationalist I have encountered on either side of the Canadian border. Let me tell you about Jimmy. Jimmy grew up in Canada playing hockey. Not watching hockey. Playing hockey. The kind of hockey that starts at five in the morning on an outdoor rink in temperatures that would make a reasonable person reconsider their life choices entirely. The kind of hockey where you tape your own stick and argue about offsides in a parking lot and develop opinions about skating techniques that you will still be sharing loudly thirty years later in a Greek restaurant in Dallas, Texas, to a customer who grew up in Chicago and knows enough about hockey to keep the conversation going for approximately forty five minutes longer than either of you planned. Jimmy loves to talk. I want to be extremely clear that this is not a criticism. It is a statement of fact delivered with profound admiration. Jimmy will arrive at your table with the energy of a man who has been waiting specifically for you to show up so he can tell you several things he has been thinking about. He will ask what you want. You will begin to tell him. He will hear the first part of your order, be reminded of something, and begin a story. The story will be excellent. You will forget you were ordering. Jimmy will also forget you were ordering. This is fine. This is the Kostas experience. You are not here to rush. You are here to sit in a room with Greek music and photos of Greece on the walls and let Jimmy talk to you about the neutral zone trap while somewhere in the kitchen the spanakopita is getting ready to change your life. At some point Jimmy will return to the table with food. It will not be entirely what you ordered. It will be more than what you ordered. Extra sides will arrive that you did not ask for and cannot explain and do not want to question because questioning the extra sides feels ungrateful and also because they are delicious and you are going to eat all of them without hesitation or remorse. Did I order the extra tzatziki. I did not. Is it sitting in front of me right now. It is. Am I going to address this. I am not. Kostas Ioannidis came to Dallas from Greece in 1976, worked his way through Dallas kitchens for over a decade, and opened this place in January 1987 with almost nobody showing up on day one and the kind of quiet stubbornness that turns into a thirty seven year institution on Greenville Avenue. The recipes come from Northern Greece, from the kind of family kitchen that does not write things down because why would you write it down, you just know, you have always known, your mother knew, her mother knew, and now the entire Upper Greenville area knows too and has known since before I was born. The saganaki arrives on fire. Cheese. On fire. At your table. Presented to you like a gift from a civilization that understood long before anyone else that the correct thing to do with cheese is ignite it in public and let people watch. I have seen this happen at Kostas multiple times and I still make the same face every time which is the face of a person who cannot believe this is allowed and is extremely grateful that it is. At some point during my last visit Jimmy circled back to a story about a playoff game he played in that involved a broken stick, a disputed goal, and a referee decision he has clearly not made peace with, and I want you to know we were forty minutes into dinner and I had eaten approximately everything on the table including the tzatziki I did not order and I was fully content to sit there for another forty minutes and hear how it ended. It ended badly for Jimmy's team. The referee was wrong. We are in agreement on this. read more

Local favorite this side of Athens. Server had been there a minute. Highly recommend the Saganaki ( cheese they light on fire), spanikopita, dolmas, any of the dips, or Avgolemeno to start. Entree is up to you! Plenty of seafood (see the sign by the host's station), chicken, and meat options. We enjoyed the baklava for dessert. The music ranged from 2010's pop to Greek dance standards. Quite unimpressed by this restaurant. My bf and I walked in on a weeknight. There were several takeout orders and two other tables. We ordered right away, two appetizers and two entrees. I enjoyed the calamari and the eggplant dip, the pita is soft and the bread service was nice too. The chicken souvlaki and mousaka are both good, especially the souvlaki. Sides are ok. The meal itself was not wow but priced right. I like the ambiance, it feels like a family restaurant. And the busser is a very nice woman. Coming from someone who has waited tables, I'm docking two stars because the big man host/waiter was not welcoming at all and seemed to have an attitude. Drop slid our plates in front of us like a diner would and walked off, did not acknowledge any time we said thanks, just seemed like he wanted to get off work early but the other tables stayed later than us (we were out by 8:50). Delicious Greek / Mediterranean food off Greenville. I live pretty close to Kostas' and have actually been once years ago. I always forget about this spot as it is an unassuming standalone blue building off Greenville. Upon entering, you quickly realize that the exterior scene does not match the interior! On the outside the building appears a little run down. But on the inside, diners are treated to a small piece of Greece! Blues and whites along with very well appointed tables. The hosts are super friendly. I came for lunch with a friend and we had a great time. We started with the calamari. It was super tasty and not overcooked / rubbery like a lot of places. One unique thing is it was served with some kind of butter sauce instead of the usual marinara. We then each got gyro dishes. I got the gyro platter with a side salad and my friend got the gyro salad. Both were served with thinly sliced gyro meat. The meat itself was flavorful and super tasty. Not like the thicker, almost crispy stuff you get at other more casual Greek style spots. The salads were also delicious. Doused in some kind of house dressy they were not creamy so still tasted healthy! All in all Kostas is a great spot in the area that I need to stop passing over! read more

Found out about Kostas via TIKTOK and wow. To start Donna is so sweet and immediately sat us. We ended up ordering the Kostas for two, and the soup was my FAVORITE. So thankful I tried it. The sagnaki and tzatziki was delicious. Now for the main course, the shrimp was cooked perfectly! The lamb lollipops were DELICIOUS. Along with the chicken and beef! Our waitress Donna was very nice and helped out our table with some recommendations that were all excellent. I think all four of us had our jaws dropped for our whole meal. The spanakopita was the best I've ever had, the pita bread tastes like the high quality olive oil they use in everything, and my chicken lemonato was to die for. We seen this place on TikTok and is hands down my new favorite Greek a spot. We ordered tzatziki & pita, the Athenian Combo (Lamb chops, boiled shrimp scampi and Souvlaki) and Lamp Chops. Everything we had was great. Our favorites were the Tzatiki and Lamp chops. Tzatiki had great flavor paired great with the soft pillowy pita. I can eat that everyday. The lamp chops had a perfect cook (medium) and seasoned well. The meat was tender and juicy. Can't wait to go back and dine in next time! We go to Kostas every once in a while. We went there on May 17 and couldn't believe the expansion of their menu. Everything tastes fresh and cooked well. More side were added like mixed vegetables snd stewed Okra, both very good. Go in and get some Saganaki (Opa!) or fantastic Hummus and Eggplant Humus for starters. I recommend Jimmy as your waiter, he'll treat you to some nice conversation, and some great wine. This is my first public negative restaurant review in my life, but as a Greek and native Dallas-ite, I truly feel compelled to do so here. I've been to Kostas many times growing up, and this has devolved into an absolute 0/10 experience over the years. This is a clown show establishment ran by absolute clowns. The food is mediocre quality... the equivalent of a Greek McDonalds. You can expect long waits for your food, as well. On top of that, the service is of the lowest quality, which is rooted in their terrible senior management. I would advise anyone going to a Greek restaurant in DFW to chose somewhere - anywhere - else. You can certainly get better service and better food. read more

I recently dined in to the restaurant for the first time I wasn't really impressed with the food. I got the spanakopita dish and the spanakopita was not good at all. It taste more like spinach and not enough cheese no butter on it no nothing. The green beans came with. It with some potatoes that tasted a little bit off. Kostas has been a favorite in my family for decades! I keep coming back for the chicken souvlaki with okra and stewed green beans, which are some of the most delicious veggies I've ever eaten. Even the salad is addictively good! Back when I could eat gluten, I was a massive fan of the avgolemono soup with bread, and the saganaki (cheese flambéed right at the table) made a fabulous treat for special occasions.
