Maybe one of the best bars I have ever been to . Should be called Krazy Kars if you ask me. A van with a water beds ( seems like a 1970s sex van if you catch my drift) Other notables are a dancing pole and some crazy ass TVs with 70s porn that cuts from porn to 70s commercials with much innuendo, playing an endless loop. I had been here a while ago. They mostly had some canned beer that none in my party liked; I can't say for sure since I am not a beer person myself. They had no cocktails when I asked so it wasn't the right place for me. The decor is cheesy but I am guessing that was the intention. The oft-mentioned stripper's pole is over hyped. It's so close to the wall that only a petite waif would be able to do anything with it. Everyone else will get stuck. The toilets, as mentioned by many others, were not the prettiest sight. So here I am, one of the few people not completely going mental for Kozy Kar. That's fine, I'll be a rebel. I had a badass time here last night but that was the crowd I was with, not the bar. Me and the same folks would have had a five star time gettin down in the lobby of gas station. Seems like a pretty standard watering hole with a little shag carpeting, and also extremely heavy on the frat/bro crowd at that. Like reeeeallly heavy. Naked ladies plastered all over the floor was a pleasant surprise. Scared the crap out of me when I finally noticed I had been walking over nudeness all night without even realizing. Bong on a pedestal is always a plus, like a relic on display at a church for all to worship. Stripper pole was just not right, get it off the wall. What's the point of a pole if you can't even spin around? Geez.. Sure, they let you climb all over it if you like but you can't start making those dollar bills if there's a one foot gap before you hit the wall. I felt tingly inside since they hit the Holy Trifecta of Milwaukee beers: PBR/Schlitz/Olympia. Well, until they ran out of Schlitz anyway. Bartenders were cheerful and attentive. I came home feeling like it was an amazing place but like I said, once I really thought it through I had an amazing time because of the peeps I was there with, not the bar. There is no other Kozy Kar. This spot is one of a kind and well worth a visit. What it is not is a place you would bring your Mom. Some of the things you'll find here include: *Not one, but TWO Waterbeds *An empty Hot Tub used as one of the Booths *A Dance Floor covered in pictures of Naked Girls *A Pinball Machine *Bras hanging from the Ceiling *Olympia Beer in Cans *Trivia Night *Comfy Boat Chairs at the Bar ...and... hmm... one other thing... ... it will come to me... *Oh yeah - Porn. Lot's of Porn. Right in the friendly confines of The PolkNob, where so many of the bars have gentrified, you have this unapologeticly not gentrified spot. Now, there are times when porn in a bar is a big red flag. Are all of the people in the bar men? Are some of them wearing raincoats? Is the floor oddly sticky? ... Worry not, that's not what we're talking about here. There is an air of debauchery here. Kozy Kar is a really fun spot, and as the night goes on, it gets to be quite a den of iniquity - you know, in a good way. One second, the TV's in the bar are playing cheesy 70's music videos, the next, they cut to 10-15 seconds of porn. And then there's the Waterbeds. You can use your imagination, but as another Yelper pointed out, you may want to dip yourself in hand sanitizer after visiting the one in back with the booth. Again, in a good way... I guess. Of course, all of this is done in the context of a dive-bar in one of the nicer neighborhoods in SF. Bar-wise, I think the service is always terrific. Cool bartenders, too. There is no draft beer, but they make up for that by having Olympia in cans. I haven't had mixed drinks here, but I've heard from fellow imbibers that the drinks are stiff. (No allusion to the Porn intended) And, they crowd is the typical Polk Street set. Depending on the time, it can be quiet - but it usually gets jumping after midnight. BTW - It's worth mentioning they don't open until 7pm. Everyone I've come here with has got a kick out of it. But I have a friend who extolls it's virtues as a good weed-out spot. I chose Kozy Kar for the first bar on my birthday bar crawl and it was a great choice! The bartender gifted me a birthday shot and a birthday drink which was SO nice! We all really wished we had been able to claim one of the awesome RV's but still had fun in our little area that we staked out. The Playboy-style prints on the floor in some areas and in the bathroom were pretty entertaining and the RV's really made for great bar decorations. The music was pretty good too and it usually didn't take too long to get a drink (especially when my friends just kept continuously bringing them to me! ;) ) I'd love to come back very early (or during the day) sometime to enjoy one of the fun RV's! read more

This is only a 1-star review because I cannot figure out how to give negative stars. I ordered a water because I was a designated driver for my friend's birthday party. When I ordered a second water, the bartender ordered me to leave the bar, claiming I was rude. The remaining 5 party members left shortly thereafter. This behavior is utterly unacceptable in any business and down right dangerous for a bar. I was attempting to behave responsibly and ensure the safety of myself and the rest of my group, a point that seemed beyond the comprehension of the feeble-minded bartender. If raunchy is one word to describe Kozy Kar, divey is the most certainly the other. It's not a classic dive bar by any stretch, not even with the wild array that SF has to offer. It is a place where pretension does not fly, where drinks are as stiff as they appear, and where bathrooms should never be inspected with a UV light. The nods to the retro porn decor are a head turning touch and the crowd is almost always an interesting cast of characters. Bartenders are a fun bunch, though they're not the easiest to get to when the place gets crowded. Best to pick a spot, like the car booth and sip slowly. The music can best be described as a pseudo 70s / 80s collection of hits in case one forgets where they are. Beware of the water bed, I'm still not entirely sure how that thing hasn't burst from a pen in the pocket yet. Surprisingly, the place works well as a party venue. Be it a birthday or a going away, friends can come here without having to worry about cover or sufficient space to mingle. The last farewell I attended here a few Halloweens ago was an epic evening, one that burns Kozy Kar into my memory of SF haunts of drunken celebrations and friendly encounters. The Lite Brite sign beckons you in from the cold of Polk, promising something no other bar along the Gulch can offer. The way in, a bottle neck that can break the toughest of Marina men, but bust through the seemingly unending wall of idiots who don't understand the concept of a fire hazard and enter a cave of wonders... Shellacked Centerfolds for flooring, Shaggin' Wagons turned into booths, with slowly rotating seating, TVs on the walls playing clips of old commercials from a childhood you vaguely recall, but now long for in that fleeting grasp at your once forgotten innocence upon seeing Kid Sister, My Buddy, Log, Slinky and more spliced with Fight-Clubian snippets of porn (sort of an nymphish smack in the face from the owner for being naive enough to think you can go home again. Although it seems that's all this dive is about.) Enjoying a beverage on one of two waterbeds in a room that gives you the feeling of being caught in a nightmare version of Spicoli's bedroom. And stay till closing so as to get assaulted by the staff that you need to leave now as it's almost 2AM, when you phone clearly states 1:40AM, but hey, it's all part of the draw, and it may take another 20mins to make it out thru the bottleneck to fresh air. Kozy Kar has its own kitschy, divey charm. If you're not an open minded person, you may not like it because there are several CRT TV screens that play vintage porn with a mix of old commercials and cartoons. But, that's the unique thing about Kozy Kar and that's why I try to bring friends from out of town here. It's an interesting concept. The bartenders are great. Had no issues. But I do feel for the them for this reason: So, the bar has a cool feature where a portion of the floor is made out of plexiglass with some sort of mirrored border so it creates the illusion of a bottomless floor. You wouldn't miss it and it would be one of the things you notice as soon as you enter. For some bizarre reason, I don't know why, but SOOO many people, (enough people to make this problem significant and noticeable), whose first reaction to the glass floor is to kick and slam into it really hard in what I would assume is an attempt to break it. I'm not even talking about tapping lightly with your feet but ACTUAL SLAMMING, JUMPING and KICKING. What's the end goal?? Ok, you just slammed your foot right into glass and fall through a hole in the ground. Congratulations. I've seen this several times and the bartenders always have to go up to all these hooligans to warn them or kick them out. It's a pretty small space but it has some pretty eclectic decorations going on with the water bed seating, or you can sit in a booth, old televisions everywhere, bras everywhere, nude women printed onto the ground and porn spliced into old advertisements on the television. The staff here is extremely rude. During my last visit, which will be the last time I spend money at this organization, I walked in with my friend who is an American citizen but from Mexico. He had a form of identification that was not a drivers license or passport, but is most certainly a legible photo ID that is more than acceptable to determine age to be let in at a bar, and to which no other bar has ever given him trouble for. The bouncer refused to let him in, saying he'd never seen this ID form before and that it was fake. Bullshit. He was extremely rude about it. I had been let in already ahead of my friend, so I went to get the bar manager, who came and reviewed everything and said it was fine, but was still not very kind about it. Okay. Another hour or so passes and my roommate is coming to meet us. He is Moroccan, with a Moroccan drivers license. Sure, it is not the exact same to a US drivers license, but it is obviously a valid form of identification. The same bouncer again refused to let my friend in, saying "never seen this type of ID before." I'm sorry, train your staff better? Or maybe not hire bouncers that are refusing entry to people because they're very real, legible, non-US identification isn't something you've "seen before"? Sounds like other issues at play here to me. The bar manager also refused to let my roommate in because of his ID. When my roommate became upset and questioned the bouncers reasoning, the bouncer looked at me and said "if you don't get your friend out of my face in 10 seconds, I'm going to knock him to the ground." Not cool dude. I wish I found out this bouncers name, but he refused to tell me and said some not so kind things to me in response. Seems like a misogynistic and racist asshole who shouldn't be in any kind of social service environment. I came in late at about 1am on a Saturday. It wasn't too packed but there was only a small walk space between the wall and the bar stools which made it hard to get in and order a drink. Even with just about 20 people at the bar. I've read a lot of reviews about the bouncers being racist against people of color. Well I was by myself and the bouncer was very sweet. Not to mention that he was a man of color himself. Take what people say on Yelp with a grain of salt. I was coming from out of town and wanted to just check it out and get some pictures. Just walking in here, you get the sense that you're at risk of inadvertently catching an STD; I can only imagine what you'd find by shining a blacklight across the the 70's-era waterbed and velvet seat covers. I've also yet to use the men's bathroom here without hearing someone talk about yay or actually witnessing someone take a bump. Still this place has a unique appeal that sets itself apart from most of the other bars on Polk street, and I can appreciate that. They've gotta work on the traffic choke point mid-way through the bar though, I've seen a few near-fights break out due to there not being enough room for people to move freely in both directions. read more

October 2010: Kozy Kar was the site of me and my friend's last act in San Francisco, before I moved to New York and she moved to London. We were Polk St. junkies, and there was no way we were going to deviate from that for our going away party. Yes, me being the legendary mouth of the South chose a place that was nothing too fancy or extravagant, but someplace that allowed us to be sloppy. It was one of those places that gave us an open checkbook to act any way we wanted. In this instance, that's all we were asking for....because it's our party! Kozy Kar gave us the whole back part of the bar and all the tables in the back. This was pretty much no hassle, no cost. Super spacious for our group of ~40-50 friends that stopped by throughout the night. The ambiance of cheap beer and porno was what we were aiming for too. The music honestly wasn't all that great, but I saw that as a blessing for this night, because usually I'll get in a non-stop jigg mood if good music comes on. That meant I actually had to make the rounds and talk to people. The bouncers were no hassle and were great. We held a themed party "Places". Dress up as something from a place. I had a friend who made an amazing costume, a red phone booth from London (see pictures). The thing was pretty much life sized, and she had no problem bringing it into the bar. I like everything about this local dive bar. From the worn out upholstery on the barstools to the vintage playboy pinups laminated under the bar top, this is a place you're going to love. The other possibility is that your delicate sensibilities will be offended because the first time you came here you brought your mom (or a first date) for an after dinner cocktail. Don't do that here. This is a place to go with your 'edgy' musician friends. The K-Kar has lots of style and fills a niche that no other local bar can lay claim to. A heavy 70's vibe is on display all over the place with 'ancient' video games, toys and vintage boom boxes on the wall. The pinball machine and waterbeds are more reminders of that bygone era from my youth. Another noteworthy feature of this fine establishment is the lone TV behind the bar, but don't come here thinking that you'll be watching the Warriors playoffs while sipping a strawberry daiquiri. Here you'll watch a random montage of clips from 70's movies and commercials of that period. Sprinkled into the video stream are short 5-second clips of hard core XXX movies that really get your attention. The bartenders are chill and the drinks are reasonably priced. Mind you, I haven't had anything fancier than a shot of tequila here, so I can't exactly speak to their mixology skills. You won't find any umbrella drinks on the 'menu' and I probably wouldn't recommend this place for any cocktail fancier than a Long Island ice tea. Kozy Kar was a random stop by some of the girls and the message I got by way of encouraging me to stop being a hermit and come out was... "OMG KK....there is a water bed in this bar! A WATER BED!!!! And porn, you can't forget the porn...oh! and the naked playboy chicks! yeah!! *random shuffling sounds and giggling*.......You should absolutely come out and meet up with us!! You HAVE to see this place" Of course my sense of adventure and curiousity being piqued I decided to splash on a little perfume, gloss my lips, tease my hair and sashay out to this little gem on Polk. So what else can I say that others haven't? This place was hilarious in its kitschy decor, and the shagtastic waterbed with its shag carpeting made me want to rock the boat all night long. It was an open invitation all night for strangers to come chat and snuggle with us as there seems to be something about a waterbed that connects us all (perhaps a Freudian inference to being in our mothers' wombs in amniotic fluid?? too weird? yeah, my bad). The beers were cheap, the wine came from a box. The music was a blend of 70s disco and rock (Bee Gees, Abba, Queen) and the bathrooms took care of any modesty issues you may have had quickly. The bouncer here was really rude when my friends and I came in the other night. He snatched my friends water bottle (which was empty) out of her hands because there's no outside liquids allowed and then grabbed two of my friends bags and threw them on the floor behind him since apparently there's no bags allowed either. My friend was taking her phone out of her pocket when he tried to grab that as well, asking if she was trying to sneak a flask in... I walked in right behind them as they turned to leave and asked for his name and if I could fill my water bottle. He didn't like that I asked for his name and said I couldn't fill my bottle or come inside and said there wasn't a manager on duty to speak with. How do I give negative 1000 stars? Staff was completely unprofessional and rude. We arrived and one of the people in our party stood over this light fixture and he hopped on it bit. Sure, he shouldn't have done it, but the bartender yelled at him to not jump on it and suggested "why don't you punch the glass over here and see if it breaks and cuts your hand." Okay. Rude. Friend told us what happened, we didn't cause a scene, finished enjoying our drinks and decided to leave the bar. While closing out the bartender told our friend that he hopes he gets hit by a car. Okay...unnecessary. While closing out my gf tells him it wasn't necessary to be that rude and hope our friend gets killed. He proceeded to start yelling at her, calling the whole group of us idiots, taking about f***ing girls in our party, started berating us to other patrons, then threatened to fight any one of us. Literally all that happened was a small girl told him that the death wish was unnecessary. We're pretty calm and collected people, but they just opened and IT JUST OPENED ITS 7PM and this dude is acting like he's on crack with aggression. We've been to countless places in countless cities. Never EVER had anyone come even close to acting the way this bartender did. Not only have I never heard anyone in service talk this way (even in places where they're paid to be mean to you like Dicks), i've never heard anyone talk this way to another person unless the person was hopped up on drugs looking for a fight. We've notified all our friends and family. None of us will ever be back. Judging by other negative reviews on here, this wont be the last time and all we can hope is either people like this bartender are removed or the business goes under for supporting people like that. read more

Last Sunday night consisted of the following experiences at Kozy Kar: - Sitting on a furry booth to realize it was a furry waterbed mattress - Discovering the posters of naked women everywhere. On the bar counters. On the walls. The ceilings. But the classy stuff - 70s playboy, etc. - One poster in particular spawning a 20 minute debate on whether her boobs were real or not. We disagreed about 5 to 1 that they were fake. Google goggles told us they were real. - Random video playing that seemed to loop between trippy cartoons, old school hip hop music videos, and hardcore porn. - Cool booths in the back - made to be like car seats, another waterbed, and a jacuzzi. - An awesome drink - the sweet tea - its crazy dangerous b/c you can't taste the alcohol. I really don't know why Kozy Kar has such a bad rep. This place is pretty fun to go with people that aren't uptight and know how to have a good time. It is super unique and has not changed with the passage of time. It has lots and lots of nudity in it and very unique seating areas, so if you have a problem with nudity then just stay away and don't ruin the fun for everyone else. The drink prices are super reasonable and the bartenders are pretty chill and attentive. It is a great space if you have a group with you. Worst place to go to. Bartender comes at you acting like a completely dick and uses the excuse that people are acting like children. You're working a bar... people are drinking... doesn't excuse stupid behavior granted but when someone comes back and apologize to you and you threaten them and tell them you hope they get hit by a car?! Then you wait for your bouncer to show up and you act tough behind your bouncer while both threaten to physically hurt you while you are standing outside their bar? What an interesting dingy dive bar! Definitely something new. I came here with a few friends, and after we ordered our drinks at the bar, we took a seat on what initially looked like a cushion-y surface... but turned out to be waterbed. CONFESSION: I've never been on a waterbed before, so that was quite an experience. We enjoyed lively conversation while "admiring" the bras on the ceiling and photos of naked women around the room. There are pinball machines and themed booths towards the back of the bar. Not the cleanest bar in the world, but I had fun. This is one of those places that doesn't give a crap about what other bars are doing. It's just flaunting it's own unique personality! read more
