Krankies came highly recommended and I can concur that the biscuits are indeed very good! I ordered a biscuit that had ham, egg and jam on it and really enjoyed it, while my husband ordered the Nashville hot chicken biscuit and enjoyed that as well. The only reason I'm not giving five stars is that the service and environment was a bit odd. When we walked in, there was no one to greet us but instead a woman sitting on a stool behind the counter who really did not seem happy to be there. Although the food was quite good, the atmosphere just felt a bit cold and bored. I'm hopeful we caught them on a weird day, and I do think it's worth checking them out as the food is really very good. read more

I was so excited to try this place because of all the great reviews, I ordered online and got there exactly when it said my order would be ready but my biscuit was so cold and seemed like it had been sitting there for a while. With that being said I did really like the fact that they waited until I was there to make my coffee that way it wouldn't be watered down by the time I arrived! read more

Krankies is a casual easy-going delicious Saturday afternoon kind of place. Nestled in the old downtown Winston Salem business district is a phoenix for an establishment with restored floors and open spaces. From the Nashville hot chicken biscuits to the sausage gravy and the cherry cola it was a Saturday afternoon delight that I would highly recommend if you're passing through or just looking for a destination on your day trip. I would also like to recommend that when you're in the area cross the street into the old tobacco district and follow the train tracks to a number of locations close by from chocolates to pizza and even a microbrewery all within a casual walking distance. read more

Worst huevos rancheros I have ever ate. I been all over the country and something simple like Huevos rancheros cannot be messed up. I'm sure the chef is still in training or over paid for online culinary course. Word to the wise do not take zoom culinary courses. If I come back next year and this spot is still open it will be a miracle..... I wish I had another pair of hands so I can give this place four thumbs down. read more

My favorite thing... the vibe!!! It's vibrant, eclectic, industrial... the patio and balcony are amazing. The staff were courteous and helped me in my menu selections. I was able to find parking just past the entrance on a side road to the right. There may be parking around back but WS was going through some major construction at the time. My "Hangover Helper" was a generous portion of chicken, bacon, egg and sausage gravy. I believe the biscuits are crafted to be a vessel. They don't get mushy when the gravy and sauces soak in. While my food wasn't epic it was tasty and a reasonable value for the price. My drip coffee was solid as well. I will definitely return when I visit WS again. read more

My sister has been hyping them up for a while and her photos looked so good, however, not being a biscuit fan, I wasn't really excited that she added it to our itinerary. BUT after experiencing Krankie's recently, I am so glad that she did! I might even say that I'd go back for more biscuit sandwiches! The Nashville hot and Seoul train were so good! read more

Really rad set up and my favorite biscuit I've likely ever had other than my grandmothers. The Texas Pete and honey chicken biscuit lives up to the hype. Not too spicy, to me at least, so I wouldn't let that deter you. Gravy was delicious as well! I thought it was a fun, hip spot. What a fun, unique spot! The atmosphere was fun, family oriented, inviting, social, and busy. It seemed like a neighborhood spot and as a WS visitor, I felt right at home. Originally came here for a weekend breakfast, but it turned into lunch instead. The wait did not take long at all. However, once my boyfriend and I were seated, the server informed us that the chef was running behind on orders. With this in mind, we didn't mind waiting for our order. With that said, we were surprised at how long it took for the Vanilla Latte ($4.50 for a 12oz) to arrive to our table. I can understand the food orders being backed up, but I would think the beverages shouldn't take an incredibly long time to make, especially not coffee. It took at least 20 minutes for the Latte to arrive! The latte art was great, but it shouldn't take that long. Ordered a plain coffee afterward, and this came out in just minutes. The meal took about 45 minutes to reach our table. I had the Smoked Salmon Benedict, which includes poached egg and hollandaise on an English muffin with mixed greens (salad) on the side, $10. Country ham is an alternative option for the Benedict. The dressing on the salad was light and refreshing. The egg was cooked perfectly and marvelously oozed over the English muffin. The salmon wasn't anything amazing. I enjoyed the Benedict dish overall, but it was not worth the long wait. We shared a slice of Pumpkin Pie as well. It was about $4. There was a pleasantly strong pumpkin flavor in the filling. The thick crust wasn't as hard as it looked, but I can't quite decide whether I liked it or not. This venue is very casual and hipster. It's located downtown. There is an outdoor seating area available. While I do appreciate being informed that our meals would be delayed, I do not think the food is worth the wait. I would only recommend this place if you're planning on grabbing a quick cup of coffee or bakery item from the front (to go), which is handled separately from sit-down meals. read more

I had an alright experience here. The avacado toast was unnoteworthy as was the rest of my experience. I think this place is just not for me. I went in for breakfast and I wanted something plant based. I don't drink coffee but I was told its great. The flavor of coffee dominated the spices which is exactly what the coffee drinker likes so good for them. Things seemed clean and they were following the safety guidelines. read more

Really love going to Krankies for a nice relaxing environment while studying. On the weekends, it is definitely a lot more crowded and you may have to wait a while for a table but during the week there is always plenty of seating whether it be on the patio or inside. It's a little on the pricier side but that's expected of a coffee house, especially one located in downtown. The biscuit with jam is always my go to for a snack and if you're looking to have a cocktail while you're there the nitro White Russian is a perfect Sunday brunch drink. An excellent coffee shop/bar/ great food establishment in a comfortable adaptive reuse building right on the old historic railroad corridor in downtown Winston-Salem. I love the vibe of the place--industrial but relaxed and great service. Always good for Java (experienced baristas do make a difference) and I like the selection of local brews and creative cocktails. But you must try the brunch--for the biscuits at the very least--butter and jam is my favorite. There are weekly specials but then they have a set brunch menu. Huevos Rancheros compete well with Hopping John, especially with several dashes of the locally made Texas Pete sauce thrown aboard. Whatever you choose it is fresh and prepared spot-on with layers of flavors. read more

Now that Krankies serves food I love it even more. I have been in for breakfast twice and both times have been really happy with my meal. My only complaint is parking can be tricky on Friday mornings. Or at least the Friday I went it was like every spot in the lot and in the vicinity had been taken. The drink ordering remains the same and you grab your drink before you sit down with your number to wait for your food. The avocado toast is super delicious and filling. The lemon/salt seasoning is perfect and really feels like a guiltier breakfast than it actually is. I'm pretty sure they bake their bread in house. They have a bread and butter option on the menu that sounds quite tasty as well. My second visit I went with the huevos rancheros. It was quite delicious and perfect if you want a filling healthy breakfast. I only ate half of it! On my second visit Barrie P ordered the chicken biscuit with sausage gravy. Man, was that thing delicious! Not necessarily the healthy option, but man it is the freaking delicious option! Been coming here for years when I'm over that way. Food quality / taste has declined over the years honestly and I think I've ordered my last chicken biscuit with hash browns after the last 4 times have been cold, old, and just not very good. Regretted buying them each time, bummer! HOWEVER, drinks are always pretty solid and I just love their patio, it's very eclectic and "backyard" esque. Just stumbled in here from Plant 64, wish I had found it earlier. My only regret is not finding this place sooner! It's a beautiful old downtown Winston building that has been restored and renovated into a nice coffee bar, restaurant and (sometimes) music venue. So disappointed in the new menu! They had so much more variety before and so many great items that I miss now! They practically only offer biscuits on the new menu. The coffee is pretty good. I'd say the main draw is the ambiance at Krankies, it's a really nice place to eat and get work done. Service is nice and quick. read more

Krankies has a cool vibe as both a coffee shop and a place to grab a bite while chit chatting with friends. Although my Weekend BLT seemed pricey for a sandwich ($8), it was delicious and I ate it all. The sourdough bread was great, the bacon was crispy, veggies were fresh and crunchy, and mayo makes everything taste better of course. My friends and I ate here for Saturday brunch. We were seated immediately but it was definitely crowded both inside and outside. They automatically add 18% gratuity to parties of 6 or more. read more

It was my first time and the people at the counter were so helpful at explaining everything to me. The food was great, coffee was amazing, and a nice clean environment. Only complaint was that the music is a touch loud so I couldn't hear my coffee order but I also think being packed with adoring customers enjoying conversation was a huge factor. This review has been a long time coming. Krankies is the go-to coffee/breakfast place when on that side of downtown. The Texas Pete and Honey Chicken biscuit is where it's at. Just do it. I will say that it isn't always consistent on the doneness of the chicken (never underdone, but sometimes could be a little juicier), but the biscuit is buttery and delicious and the honey and Texas Pete make up for some of the wrongs on a bad day. The coffee is consistently good. During this weird time, the hours are really limited, but during the pre-times, the seating was great. Interesting vibe inside, nice patio outside. Did I mention the coffee? It's good. And the chicken biscuit. read more

I am so happy I stopped at this place. I wanted to try the classic sandwich with honey but learned from the cashier it is spicy, which I know I may not be able to handle, so tried the one with Sausage gravy and boy did it not disappoint! The chicken was perfectly crispy, I can't even describe how amazing the gravy and biscuit tasted! Extremely flavorful! I enjoyed this sandwich very much! Hope to return on another visit! read more

Brunch is seen as more than just a meal for some folks who are all into what is trendy, and restaurant are aware of this and prices are raised due to the "experience" element! I have tried several items here including their version of Huevos Rancheros (not a fan of how they make it, pulled pork is a party foul), the Eggs Benedict (decent but over priced for sure, $17 with bacon added), and several Omelette choices, can reach $15. This is obviously a popular spot in downtown Winston, but I find it generally overpriced, loud, and the service is inconsistent. I like a good adventure, but somethings simply are not worth the cost! Note that the prices for individual items are written, very lightly with no $ sign to the right of the item. This is done intentionally to make the customer pay less attention to what they spending. Many restaurants are using some form of this approach!

The shrimp were the size of cocktail shrimp, if not smaller. I was also expecting a larger serving for the $20 price tag. The plate/bowl they were served in was shallow, so the serving was disappointingly small in spite of covering the plate. The menu has a lot of depth and next time I'll try out something else. This spot just didn't do it for me with that particular dish though.

If it is an issue for you, they offer pancakes instead so you can still have a treat. We did not experience any ill-effects but your mileage may vary of course. Both the gluten free and standard breakfast options were terrific, it seems like everything was made in-house. We will absolutely be back. It seems like they have some limitations on how much of certain foods they can turn out (for example, they probably only have a handful of waffle makers) so it did take a little while to get our food. This isn't uncommon for brunch at many places but I don't know what it's like during dinner service so I can't speak to that. The place itself is beautiful, it looks like an old home or B&B and it's got a cozy charm. My only complaint was the Mimosa price being a bit high and the drink itself just being a standard cava+orange juice. I'd love to see $2 knocked off the Mimosa price if I could choose, but otherwise everything was so good. Finally, do get a reservation or be prepared to wait during the top hours.

For our entrees, we got an assortment of benedicts, salads, and chicken/waffles. I personally had the pork belly benedict. The pork belly itself was really good and the poached eggs were perfectly runny, but as a whole, it fell a little flat, just didn't quite deliver the entire burst of flavor I was hoping for. It was not bad by any means, I think it just needed a/more sauce or something. All in all though, we had a great time and would definitely return. Pricing is pretty fair/standard as well. I could definitely be tempted by the martini or margarita flight next time as well as the beignets which we totally forgot about after the waiter initially suggested them!

The HVAC system at this property is apparently old and, according to staff, frequently malfunctions. Unfortunately, I learned that firsthand when the air conditioning failed on the hottest day of the year--July 4th. After a long flight and drive from Charlotte Airport, I arrived expecting a comfortable night's rest. Instead, I spent a sleepless night in a sweltering room. To the hotel's credit, staff offered me a replacement room, but what was supposed to be an upgrade was just as hot as the standard room I had originally booked. At that point, there was no meaningful solution to the problem. What made the situation even worse was the hotel's billing policy. Unlike most hotels that charge you after your stay, this property charged my credit card in advance. That's particularly bad news when the hotel cannot provide the basic service you're paying for: a room with working air conditioning. With no realistic option but to leave, I checked out early on July 4th, forfeiting the second night of my reservation. Yet the front desk staff informed me they were not authorized to refund the unused night, despite already having charged my card. I was told that only the manager, Mr. Aaron Simerlink, could approve the refund--and that he works only Monday through Friday. Think about that for a moment. The hotel could charge my credit card immediately, but the employees standing in front of me supposedly lacked the authority to return money for a night I would not be using because the room was uninhabitable. Why should a guest have to spend a holiday weekend chasing down a manager to obtain a fair refund? Adding insult to injury was the customer service that followed. Mr. Simerlink initially avoided taking my call, and when I finally did speak with him after the front desk returned to him a second time, he ended the conversation by hanging up on me. That is not how a reputable hotel treats a guest who experienced a major service failure. Ironically, when I checked out, the front desk had mistakenly billed me for the room "upgrade." Somehow, they were able to correct that charge without Mr. Simerlink's intervention, yet they remained powerless to refund the unused night. The inconsistency speaks for itself. I eventually noticed that the unused night's charge had been refunded. That was the right outcome, but it should never have been a struggle to get there. A reputable operator would have shown genuine concern for a guest who endured a sleepless night in extreme heat. The response should have been immediate, apologetic, and customer-focused--not reluctant, dismissive, and adversarial. My advice is simple: don't do it. If you're considering staying here, remember that when things go wrong, how management responds matters just as much as the problem itself. Based on my experience, you deserve better. Listen to what I'm telling you. Don't let my mistake become your mistake. You deserve better than this
