I made it priority to try this place the moment I saw my friend's IG story with "Katsuya" on the box. I stumbled upon Katsuya over a decade ago in Studio City. Fell in love with the spicy tuna crispy rice. Fast forward 15 odd years later, thought I would get the same greatness in NorCal. Not sure if sushi delivery is just a bad idea all in all or if Krispy Rice is still too new, but the meal just wasn't right. From how the rice was cooked, the quality of the sushi, and the presentation, everything was lacking. Krispy Heaven ($35): The crispy rice wasn't crispy enough. It was oily and chewy. The "king" salmon nigiri looked artificial and skimp af, I took one bite just to try it but it felt dangerous. Couldn't tell which was salmon or hamachi, both looked like the color of hamachi. OMG I've tasted Heaven! Truffle + avocado + crispy rice is the best thing I've had all quarantine. Run, do not walk, to splurge on this awesome treat. Also, the king salmon is TO DIE FOR. So fresh and tasty, superior quality to any other sushi place I've had in my whole life. I know the price is more than your average sushi spot, but you won't regret the money spent on these two items. The hand roll version of the truffle avocado is a little too soft of texture and creamy, so I would stick with the crispy rice version. Spontaneously ordered this via Doordash after my daily ritual of mulling over the options. I decided to try them out as Doordash had a small deal so why not? The box looked so cute and the food looked decent from the pictures. I should have trusted my intuition but at the same time, it is always good to try something at least once. Really enjoyed my first box from a Krispy Rice! Ordered delivery through Door Dash--said it was going to be ~45min for delivery (ordered ~6pm) and it came in about 30min! Boxes stayed nice and pretty during the delivery process :) I got the Just Krispy Box which I thought was a great deal--3 pieces of tempura shrimp, 2 spicy tuna Krispy, 2 king salmon Krispy, 2 spicy hamachi Krispy, and 2 AVOCADO TRUFFLE KRISPY rolls (all caps because this roll was especially DELICIOUS). I've heard a lot about this place in LA and was glad when they finally came to the Bay. I ordered for pick up, and it took a while to find because I didn't know it was inside Umami Burger. I loved the famous (from LA, new to SF) Krispy Heaven ($35) via DoorDash delivery. FYI it's delivery only and pretty awesome. Omakase with a California twist is the best explanation. What makes it really unique (besides the instagram heaven packaging for the photo op and design), is the baked rice nigiri, The toasted rice actually worked well for delivery with the perfect textured crunch and a variety of quality tuna. 8 pieces of hamachi, salmon and yuzu, truffle avocado, and spicy tuna, yum! The "original baked crab rice handroll" was really unique and I liked the rice flour wrapping with avocado and crab inside. Shrimp tempura is avg (in a good way). Ultimately hoping that this place improves their food. -Everything was salty (without using the provided soy sauce) -The box and design and all the non food stuff is cute and all, but you can't eat the box -I'm sure the rice was crispy at some point and time, but even thought it was delivered to me within 15 mins of my doordasher picking it up, that crispy rice just wasn't the texture i had hoped for Idea is great and the packaging is great, but the food wasn't. With sushi, i feel like nothing is more important than the rice, and their rice has lots of room to improve. Yeah the yuzu flavor is nice, but the food just kinda reminded me of something you could pick up at a convenient store (which to some people, is a huge complement) With covid and the effects of stay at home to any new restaurant (especially one with no brick and mortar) I can see how getting food delivered can be a logistical challenge while trying to keep the quality up, i will definitely try this place again after they have time to iron out some wrinkles. It's great that they are open during covid. Though, they do not offer delivery to my house or my friend's house. So, we ended up placing an order via Door Dash and picking it up. Door Dash updated the notifications and said our order would be ready within a 30 minute timeframe. We headed over to Umami Burger (which is where we were told to pick up the order). We waited in line to find out that our order wasn't ready. They told us 15 minutes, and after checking again and again... after 1 hour, it still wasn't ready! By this time, we were pretty livid and hangry. I had to ask if our order was even being worked on! They need to update Door Dash timing realistically or stop accepting orders if they cannot fulfill them in a timely manner. The food is delicious, the packaging is super cute and quality, but the pricing is a bit high considering the amount of food you receive. I don't think I will ever order food from here on a Friday night. I may consider ordering here on an off day, at an odd hour. Though this experience was pretty bad! I am a bit traumatized. Was very disappointed. I wanted to give this place a fair shot despite it receiving negative reviews on Yelp but unfortunately the food was sub par. The set I got cost $35 and I found it very expensive for the quality of food I got. Definitely not worth it. I'm a HUGE fan of krispy rice but it was just meh here. I think this place could be good if it was eaten at a restaurant right away. The salmon nigiri was meh (fish quality was 3/5) the shrimp tempura was a 2/5. It definitely is different from the traditional tempura, it's more like deep fried shrimp. I've ordered a couple times now and every time it's been delicious and standard delivery wait. I always get the Just Krispy set, the perfect amount of food for dinner. Comes in cute pink boxes and with a little dipping tray for your soy sauce and a thick fancy napkin. The rice sometimes is a little greasy at the bottom, but nothing too bad. Aside from the food being absolutely delicious, I ALWAYS feel welcome and look forward to dining inside. The service is absolutely unmatched. This is a new brand (from founders of Katsuya down in LA) that is trying to pivot to a ghost kitchen business model serving key metros across the US. Props to them for the innovation and pivoting to current market needs. Overall it was a good meal but a couple of drawbacks from giving it a 5. The krispy rice seemed difficult to execute in a delivery model because by the time we ate it, it wasn't very krispy and instead was super oily (from being fried on the pan I presume). Amazing and cute presentation but the food falls short. The crispy rice and fish are wayyyy too over seasoned. The reason why they're so over seasoned is probably to cover up the taste of the not so fresh fish which you can definitely taste in the sushi nigiri which is the one part of the meal which isn't supposed to be seasoned. The shrimp tempura and the tartar sauce were the best part of the meal and they were average at best. The restaurant needs to figure out how to get the seasoning correctly. read more

My GF & I have been ordering from Krispy Rice a couple of times a month since early lockdown. The food is great, an interesting and unique take on sushi. This last time we ordered, I called in to ask for extra wasabi, and the staff let me know they were out due to a supplier failure. I was dismayed, so one of the people working there, Rah, did something extraordinary. He literally ran down the street to another restaurant, bought wasabi from them, and then hired an actual taxi to get me my food (since the delivery app driver had already left when he got back). Don't waste your time. I've now ordered 3 times from here - bc I have great memories of Katsuya in LA. Be warned! Every time there have been major delays. I've used Caviar and Grub Hub. It was so bad this past week, the food came after nearly 2 hours (quote was 40 min), the fried shrimp was completely cold and the spicy tuna crispy rice was fishy. None of the crispy rice was crisp. Instead it was oily and cold. Cold fried food is nasty, but top it with fish that's been sitting out and it's downright a health violation. The restaurant doesn't answer the phone, and they have no commitment to service that is expected of their name/owners. read more

Other than the soy sauce, ginger, and wasabi, everything is some bizarre fusion of Japanese inspired food. The hand roll is more like a mini burrito wrapped in rice paper. The nigiri is on seared rice. It's more like a party canape than a piece of nigiri. Avocado and truffle just don't belong in a cut roll. It's soft and mushy. The truffle oil is overpowering. This used to be our go-to sushi order. Well-portioned nigiri and rolls, and the actual krispy rice dishes were fresh and tasty. Recently the quality has dropped off a cliff. The krispy rice nigiri is stale and nearly rock hard, just unpleasant to eat. The regular nigiri is sloppily constructed. Rolls come fairly slap dash as well. Was super disappointed that I actually have to give this a low rating. Their quality decreased considerably with my most recent order. I've been promoting them heavily with friends and was a regular customer for months. However, this experience was incredibly terrible. Perhaps they were training a new chef. I got the Krispy Heaven and all the pieces crumbled with the rice. The Krispy rice items, which are usually very on par also fell apart. As if they put too much vinegar in the rice. The fried shrimp is also usually delicious was soggy and they omitted all the sauces. No tartar sauce, soy sauce, wasabi, ginger, chopsticks. Was really surprised and disappointed. The portions were considerably smaller too. It's as if they were truly training a new chef - hopefully this is not their quality moving forward. That would be such a shame :( read more

Gross. I've been to Katsuya and also have had "krispy rice" at many different places. This is by far the worst krispy rice I have tasted. The rice underneath was extremely hard and oily plus the spicy tuna on top was veryyy fishy. Bad quality fish. The truffle avocado krispy rice was also too overwhelming with the truffle flavor. Salmon nigiri was overpriced which is cool as long as the salmon is fabulous and it was not. Salmon looked unsafe, slightly brown and smelt very fishy. The presentation looks amazing but overall the food was not good. The fish was not fresh, the rice was cold and hard, the sushi rolls were extremely tiny, the crispy sushi didn't have much flavour other than "crispy rice". I also ordered a set that was supposed to include the hand rolls but it was forgotten along with the additional hand roll I ordered. When mentioned to the server, they said the chefs were sure they included those items but unfortunately they were not.
