Full disclosure: Pad see ew is my favorite dish on the PLANET and I work in Navy Yard. Thus, I could really use a good Thai place to shovel my money at too many times a week. The mixed reviews on Yelp kept me away for a while, but I optimistically gave it a shot today when a hankering for Thai hit. Meh at BEST. The spring rolls were good, but c'mon: it's also a really hard dish to screw up. The pad see ew was disturbingly soggy--yet the chicken tasted dry? The broccoli was also super soggy and somewhat inedible. I ate most of it due to sheer hunger, but I will definitely not be coming back, which is a bummer. I'm sure this place will stay open because of tourists stopping in before a Nats game, but it is not a place I'd ever recommend for someone who wants genuinely good Thai food. read more

Had dinner there two nights on a recent business trip. First night had Gang Ped Yang. Flavor was good, but they could have done a much better job trimming the meat--there were quite a few pieces that you wouldn't have wanted to eat. Second time, I just tried the chicken panang--which was very good. Also tried the black sticky rice with mango dessert that was out of this world! They have the lights far, far too dim in there. Kruba is my favorite, go-to spot in the neighborhood. Their quality and service, including a commitment to covid precautions, have been unwavering since I started dining with them over a year ago. I didn't think you could feel sad eating Thai food. And then I ordered takeout from here. What you think will be a delicious, mouthwatering Pad Thai experience will actually be a side of white rice and a plastic container filled with disappointment. You might be thinking to yourself.. Pad Thai doesn't have rice in it.. exactly my point. And what's worse, when you address the issue with the manager himself, you will be told that you can pay for an entirely new entree so that they can try to get it right the second time around. If the front of the house was 1/3 as good as the back it would be a solid 4-stars---but it is a long way from that. The food remains really good. The service is atrocious; well the servers are nice but don't expect things like food, flatware, napkins, drinks, etc to come in any particular order; and be prepared to go chase the components down. DO NOT GO I am not one to write bad reviews only ,but I've tried this place TWICE! And it's been horrible not once but twice! I want even go into detail about the first time. The second time I went with a few ladies from work for lunch. First of all the waitress didn't speak good English so she wasn't aware about what we were asking about. Then my coworkers decides to get 2 spring rolls instead of soup. When the guy brings it to our table he is rushing so fast that one of the spring rolls rolls off the plate into the table and this MAN had The NERVE to pick it up with his hands and put it BACK on her PLATE!. No I'm sorry, my bad, let me get you a whole new plate, NOTHING. He picked it up off that nasty table they wipe off with dirty towels, with his nasty, ain't no telling where his hands been self and put the food back on the plate. I was in shock and disgusted. I ordered something that came with vegetables and shrimp. TELL ME WHY I paid 15 bucks for a lunch special and I had 4 pieces of shrimp on my plate. My coworkers food tasted like old chicken that had been sitting and my other coworkers food looked like beef that someone had chewed on. The noodles were dry. It was just a hot ass mess. I had a tiny little scoop of cold HARD rice. What happened to Thai food being heavy with lots of rice? When we tried to as another waitress to get our waitress so we could send the food back, yet again anther person who didn't understand English so she stood and nodded her head while she attempted to refill out water which wasn't what we were asking for. And NO she didn't go get the waitress. The place smelled weird and they had a lot of flys from keeping the door open! So as I stated before DO NO GO! I ate lunch here yesterday (my first visit). Pretty cool place with interesting decor. The restaurant was almost empty aside from us and 3 or 4 other tables, but we decided to give it a try. Service was alright but slightly slow, appetizer of fried squid was delicious. The entrees were decent but when my brother asked for more rice with his curry, we didn't realize there would be a $2.50 charge added to the bill (seems kind of silly). Never have any issues dine in or take out. Every time I go it's usually never busy which is completely fine with me. We didn't try the Thai food, and I'm actually pretty sad this place went sushi/thai since I think they'd have much better ratings if they were only Sushi/Japanese. So if you're looking for sushi don't let the bad reviews deter you! Onto the detailed review... Sushi: This is fresh fish that is prepared very well. Our favorite roll was the plain tuna roll, that says a lot when just fish and rice taste so delicious. I do wish their specialty rolls were a tad bit more affordable and had some more exciting options. I say this as a non-traditionalist that loves fresh fruit and flavors/sauces. The traditional/more plain rolls are delicious enough to keep us happy. Drinks: I really enjoy chilled saki with my sushi so I stayed away from the cocktail menu (though it did seem they had some decent options). Saki menu was small, but had solid options. Since my bf doesn't like saki I just opted for the cheapo $9.00 'house' chilled saki and it was pretty great. I tend to down saki so I wouldn't want to share, but I lighter drinker would probably be fine sharing that $9.00 bottle. Other Food: All we tried were the spring rolls. They were your basic deep fried spring rolls, but the sauce we pretty good with some nice spice. I can see why people going there for non-sushi meals might not be happy with the food. The spring rolls weren't bad, but not much better than what you'd get at any take-out place, save the tasty sauce. They had some decent dessert options, but no red bean ice cream! Red bean is my favorite, please get some Kruba! Ambiance: They clearly put a lot of time and money into this places look. It's nice, calm, and feels like a traditional sushi place. Overall: We can walk here and it's really good sushi. We will be regulars when we want sushi. Went for lunch with a group of five. The restaurant interior is beautifully decorated and the tables are sturdy wood. Looks like a lot of money went into the finishes. We ordered quite a few sushi rolls as starters in addition to our lunches and the waiter asked if we were in a hurry because the sushi orders were backed up. We weren't... Glancing over at the sushi area, I only saw one person making sushi... hence the back-up. Hopefully this is not the status-quo for them. The sushi was good, but the roll sizes were a bit small. Lunch specials are $9.95 and come with a miso soup and a spring roll, served first on a fancy plate/bowl. I don't care for miso soup but it was a small "taster" portion and the spring roll was also small, crunchy and somewhat tasteless outside of the standard greasy flavor. The entrees all sounded appealing and it was hard to decide. Two at our table ordered the pad ginger, I ordered the Pad Prig King, not even knowing what prig king sauce is (and still not knowing after eating although it wasn't saucy but more of a rub texture), another had the drunken noodles and someone had fried rice. Dish presentation is nice and dishes have spiraled carrots on them and are served with a side of rice. Everyone enjoyed their food and considering we ate a boatload of sushi, everyone finished their meals, which speaks a bit to the small portions. All in all, the experience was favorable, and the service good but far from great. The prices trend a bit high for lunch, especially given the modest portion sizes. Good thai food -- same owner and practically the same menu and ambiance as Regent Thai (on 18th St. NW) and Teak Wood (on 14th St. NW). Food here seems a bit less spicy than their other spots, but still good. And you can always ask for it to be spicier. read more

While dining here today with my colleagues it was horrible for the following reasons: 1) Received two dirty drinking glasses of water 2)Roach appeared out no where and ran under window wall border molding i jumped up and we moved. When we told staff and girl presenting to be the manager they were unconcerned. I went back to table to retrieve my sweater and roach ran across the table. Manager waited for it to reappear and took a napkin and killed it on the table. Table was never cleaned or wiped off. Fucking disgusted. 3). I ordered garden vegetable rolls and after sitting and waiting was told they didn't have them. Why Didn't the server know to inform guest? Do these folks communicate, apparently not!! 4). My colleague asked for drunken noodles with vegetables from the lunch menu. She received vegetables with tofu and three noodles. When brought it to the lady posing as manager she started explaining that the roach came from outside Before sharing that this is how it's made as they measure the portions. I asked since we had endure enough could she just give her a small portion of noodles to add to her plate. The manager acted like it was a problem and was not even willing to look at the order and see it was a little noodles. Kruba is the best deal in DC. All their beers are around $5, And even less for HH. I have been several times now and the food was delicious. I mainly eat appetizers (spring rolls, edamame, dumplings) and vegetarian entrees, and everything has always been delicious. Don't be deterred by a relatively smaller crowd. A reasonable portion, though one of my coworkers who came with me mentioned that it was a great deal more generous on previous visits. Finally a sushi restaurant we can call our own! Generous portions of fish and conservative amount of rice in the rolls. We tried California, spicy tuna, yellowtail, and salmon rolls. All are tasty and we would definitely go back for more. I also really like the ambiance. Very zen in decor. Have been here twice now, and I've been extremely happy with it both times. This far have tried their pad thai, mango salad, a side of white tuna nigiri, and "sea war" seafood salad. Their pad thai is quality. But their salads are amazing. I love tangy thai salads, and these are really up there. Be sure to ask for hot spices and add some of their hot pepper fish sauce. We love Thai cuisine and we try to find a new local place a few times a month. So we decided to give Kruba a try, and I'm glad we did. Beautiful decor attentive and friendly wait staff and last but not least some of the most flavorful authentic Thai we've ever eaten. I had the pineapple fried rice and she had the grilled salmon Panang curry. Both dishes were amazing. We also had their sushi which were tightly rolled fresh and very flavorful as well. Will make this short and simple....Great food, outstanding service and exceptional variety. I go there frequently with my girlfriend and have ordered a number of the curries, drunken noodles and soups. If you're unsure of your spice limit just order as-is and request a spice tray should you require a little augmentation throughout the meal. My only knock is that I can never seem to get out of there for under $100 with a simple dinner for 2 and couple beers. I've had Thai food in some "mecca" areas, but this was truly delicious. Cool environment inside, the food is fresh and simple, and the spices work together in an amazing way. Nothing we had was too spicy, it was just perfect. Miso soup and Spicy Crab Tempura Roll as starters, followed by four entrees, then pad see ew, and finally mango sticky rice. Though ingredients among dishes were repeated, each dish had its own unique flavor. I certainly would recommend this place to anyone in SE looking for a fast pace, delicious Thai restaurant! read more
