My girlfriend and I came here yesterday. When first entering it wasn't a very warm welcoming. The 2 girls told us to just sit anywhere, the vibe the girls were giving off, was that they didn't want to be there, which didn't make us feel comfortable. After ordering it too 30 min to get all our food, with 3 sushi chefs, one taking pictures of something with his phone, and mind you there were only 3 tables. Now the food... I had heard of this place from a friend and seen reviews on yelp and had high hopes, those hopes where shot down by the first bite off sushi. The Lobster Feast Roll was a basic California roll with stale lobster on top and eel sauce, and that was the most decent one, we also had the Spicy Tuna Crispy Rice and the Fried Jalapeno roll, the crispy rice also tasted stale, and that deffinetly was not fresh spicy tuna on top. As for the jalapeno roll which was suppose to be spicy fish wrapped in a jalapeno and fried, well there was more cream cheese then anything else in the roll and it wasn't spicy at all. As a person who has grown up in a kitchen, with a strong Italian background, and who has enjoyed Sushi in different parts of the world, I was truly disappointed. I re-visited Kuma to give it another chance. Let me say it was definitely better the second time around. The rolls that we had were great. This time around I tried the BSC Roll. I didn't get a chance to see the board up on the wall because it was hidden from where I was sitting, but the selection on the board seemed really good. I still had a problem with the chicken katsu, but maybe it's just the way they cook it and my preference is different. The service was just as great as before, so I'm glad that that hasn't changed. OMFG if you love salmon, their salmon capriccio is a MUST try. 8 slices of greatness over sOme of their homemade sauce garnished with chopped chives and the kicker here is crispy bits of garlic. Its so good that I wanted to prolong my dish as long as possible. My wife asked me why it is taking so long for me to finish that appetizer dish. It's common to watch your spouse eat their entire meal and finish before your's comes out. The managers are even worse. I'm not one to leave bad reviews, but this place is consistently bad and needs some (sushi) competition nearby. After being treated poorly for the last time I'll never be back. Not impressed. I've had a lot of sushi to know what's great and what's not, and this place is just mediocre. I ordered the scallop sushi, spicy salmon and caterpillar roll to-go to satisfy my late night sushi cravings, but it didn't really do the trick. So the search continues for a great Sushi restaurant in the 909. Sadly the non sushi items (tempura, miso soup, salad) were excellent. Got two sushi dishes. First was a special crispy rice with tuna. I have had this dish many places and was disappointed here. The rice was more chewy than crispy. I am not sure what they poured over it but it was way too much. The crunchy roll had hidden (I don't think intentionally l) shrimp tails inside the roll. That was a surprise to bite into. I will say service was excellent. I'm very impressed with Kuma Sushi. After trying out so many sushi restaurants, this one has to be my favorite BY FAR. Although the dinning and bar area are kind of small, the ambiance, friendliness of the workers, and quality of their food make up for it. What I like most is their great selection and originality of their rolls, sushi, and other various dishes. I have tried almost everything on their menu and nothing has disappointed me yet! I have been to many other sushi places and most of them do not have specialty items such as Uni, Toro, or Mirugai (my favorite), but this place ALWAYS has them available. Although it may be kind of pricey, its totally worth what you pay for! And they really do serve quality seafood. No just their sushi, but their rolls are to die for. The first time we went to Kuma Sushi, we really enjoyed it. Unfortunately, last night we decided to go out to dinner there again. First, we came into the restaurant and no one greeted us, not the waitresses or the sushi chefs. We waited for almost 5 minutes before someone came up and only for her to greet the guy that came in after us. They seated us the same time they seated the guy and his party of 6. Then, they went on and helped the guy and his party first and put in their orders first. THIS REALLY IRRITATED ME. After waiting for awhile we put in 4 orders of different type of sushi. Sadly, they all took forever to come out. 1 or 2 rolls would come every 20 minutes or so. We ordered 2 more rolls which took forever. Also, the waitress kept messing up and bringing the wrong rolls to wrong tables. Finally, another waitress brought our credit card back after paying to the wrong table. Okay we had 4 different rolls and didn't dare to try any more...the Crab tasted frozen, our Ono was soaked in Ponzu sauce, and our Rainbow Carpaccio (which was RECOMMENDED) was DRENCHED IN the special sauce! The waiters don't seem to care to have you even step foot in the restaurant. Also they don't seem interested in cleaning the place as well...DIRTY AND MESSY ALL OVER THE FLOOR...I was about to Grab a Broom myself and start sweeping...SO NASTY! This part is Classic, as I proceeded to use the ladies room, it was disgusting! I looked at their cleaning chart and the last person to check off the bathroom as being cleaned had been over 24 hours ago. The best part someone wrote next to the check mark that it had been cleaned and wrote" No You Didn't"! WELL AIN'T THAT THE TRUTH! I walked out of there wishing I did not spend $50 on sushi that could potentially make you SICK! We left feeling used and quite frankly hungry still, that we stopped by and ate at Boiling Crab & Crawfish...What a way to forget this horrible experience and at least only spend $15 feeling full! read more

It is a shame that this place lack a good customer service for being in a good spot. First if all, I told the greeter that we are going to need a high chair for my two year old son before we even got seated. I went to the bathroom, got back and waited for ten minutes and still no high chair! I have to physically ask again for a high chair and the same server asked "do I need a high chair?"... Uh... Yes!!! SLOW is definitely an understatement for the service they provide for this place. We asked for a soda refill and the server seemed like he didn't want to get it for us! But they are very fast about swiping your credit card when it is time to pay! How ironic... I love there bento special. It comes with so much: a small salad (I love the salad dressing, tangy & sweet) a scoop of potato salad, daicon, sushi, tempura and your choice of meat. (I like the t. beef). Out of all the sushi places I've been to, I feel this place gives you the most food for your money. Miso soup & edamamae are the free appetizer. Its small inside and this place is always busy so be prepared to wait. Check out their business hours before arriving. They have very odd operating hours. Closed for a few hours in the mid afternoon. I absolutely loved this place. My Japanese friend took me here. It was a bit out of my way but was all worth it. When we walked in the restaurant We were greeted with the usual Irasshaimasse chant. We sat at the sushi bar and my friend was speaking Japanese to the sushi chef and the manager. My wife is also Japanese they were having a ball, I wish I understand what they were talking about. The size of the fish on the sushi was on the large side. The quality of the fish was top notch, really fresh. I guess the sushi chef knows what he was doing. My wife told me he was trained in Japan. What I like the most was the additional items they have on their special menu on the wall. My favorite was the Cajun ono. It melts in your mouth. There was also the Kobe beef sushi which was seared slightly and topped with the chef's special steak sauce on top. It was delicious. We also had Live Amaebi, well can't go wrong with the live Amaebi. Unlike some Japanese restaurant that serves frozen shrimps that tasted like plastic. We also had the Spicy tuna crispy rice. They said it was one of their most popular dish, I can see why. It was really really good. We also had the blue crab hand roll to end our sushi experience here. Overall I enjoyed the tradition sushi they offer along with the so call "fusion" style sushi. I would definitely come back here again. read more

One of my new favorite sushi restaurants! I was taken there by a local friend while on vacation last week and I was not disappointed! I'm a bit of a sushi noob, I admit, so I don't recall everything that I had. But their extreme albacore and vegetable tempura were among the best I've ever had and each plate came out looking like a work of art. I also had something called a rainbow cappachio (sp?) which was to die for! Beyond the food, our service was excellent as well. Our waitress was an attractive young girl named Kitty who was very prompt in taking our order and even sat down to give us a few personal recommendations when she saw that I wasn't entirely sure what I wanted despite it being the middle of the dinner rush and very busy. She obviously had a passion for the food she serves! Even the owner came by to chat for a bit! Overall the atmosphere was very friendly and relaxed. I don't recall the exact amount of our bill, but it was between $30-40 which was remarkably inexpensive considering we both left so stuffed that we had to bring the leftovers home for later. The 7 nigiri pieces chosen by the chef were delicious. The rice is pretty good and the fish was fresh (sunday) then it comes with a small tuna roll and miso soup. All in all it was good. For the past two years I have been coming to Kuma Sushi in the Colonies, not because of its service or food quality or ambience. Rather, my family and I frequent this place because of convenience, as we live down the street and have accepted this place as our go to place for a quick sushi fix. However, today was the last straw. At approximately 1:30pm, I called the place with a simple order: 2 hand rolls, a cut roll and a sashimi dish... nothing unusual or technically demanding. I was told the food would be ready in 20 minutes. I arrived 30 minutes later, waited at the counter for a brief period, was not greeted by the host, and let him know I put in a to-go order. He proceeded to walk back to the kitchen without so much as a word to me. I assumed he was getting my order from the back... I was wrong. Another hostess came and told me she would check on my order. 15 minutes later, I'm watching the sushi chef make my order. All in all, I was in there waiting for my order for 25min... I'm not sure what the point of ordering ahead was if they're just going to ignore my request. Now, I'm normally a fairly reasonable guy, but in this instance I have 2 screaming kids waiting in the car, we ordered ahead of time so as to avoid this 30+ min delay, and the restaurant wasn't even busy! There were 3 tables occupied! To top it off, the food is mediocre at best. How hard is it to make a freshly minced spicy tuna hand roll without making it taste like it came out of a chicken of the sea can? Even the prices are tragic for what you get. If I were a restaurateur, I would open up a sushi place right next door to these guys, it's a guaranteed win. Don't waste your time, don't waste your money, don't waste your breath with this place. I used to eat here quite frequently as Target and Kohl's are right there and I would stop in for a quick Crunchy Roll. I never did like the fact that you can't use a credit or ATM card unless your bill is over $20. That's just the owners being cheap. I went in with my 2 boys, 16 and 10, last week. I ordered my usual crunchy roll, one son ordered a tempura/teriyaki steak lunch box and my other son ordered the teriyaki chicken box. My fave sushi chef was not there, so I was a bit apprehensive about how my roll would be prepared. Sure enough, I got it and he had cut it into such big pieces I couldn't get them in my mouth. Plus, they were laying 'flat' instead of lined up next to each other. My older son ate his tempura and said it tasted like old greased though he said the steak was just ok. My other son had to sift through his chicken and peel all the fat off. He said it was really gross. I guess I'm done with Kuma. I'll just have to drive out to Victoria Gardens and go to Kabuki. Edited to add: My son who ate the tempura had to find a bathroom almost immediately after we left. I think it was because the cooking oil hadn't been changed in awhile. I've been coming here forever (actually about 10 years)! The lunch combo comes at a decent price that's pretty cheap and the sushi is good quality. It comes with miso soup too, and the overall atmosphere is very pleasant. I recommend coming in at lunch because of the lunch combo price and because it's less crowded. I always get the beef teriyaki and California roll, which always is the best. My sister gets the lobster feast, which I actually enjoy despite not really liking lobster. This is one of my top sushi places for sure. At one time my family and I were going so much the owner would give us extra salmon in our chirashi sushi deluxe, always a must! Everything is really fresh and it is SUPER clean in there too. You can tell the owners take pride in what they do. The sushi chefs are great and so is the service. I don't know what any of these people here are talking about, there is always a great crowd of happy people eating GREAT sushi. I highly suggest their caterpillar roll, I get it every time! I prefer nigiri over rolls, but my family ordered a whole mountain of sushi so I dug in. This was better than a lot of sushi I've had, but certainly not the best. Nigiri: I LOVED the halibut. It was great. The salmon was pretty average, but the yellowtail was just okay for me. It was a little stringy which i don't really appreciate in my sushi. All of the slices were on the thick side (not complaining), and fresh. Rolls: We ordered the Jalapeno roll and lobster feast roll. I liked the lobster feast, and didn't have the jalapeno because i fear thick jalapenos. Salmon skin hand rolls: Good (and only 1.50)! They were chewy and flavorful. My dad really likes these so we ordered a whole bunch.. They came out after the rest of our food though, so that was a little bit of a downer. Service was fine. The head Sushi chef is from Japan (I think...) and they have really good Sake too. Some of the fake Japanese restaurants have cheap kind of Sake, but they have good stuff. Sometimes you get crumbled sushi rice like California Rolls, but most of them are good. My daughter orders Ikura (salmon row eggs) and Ebi (shrimp). They have been great. We were visiting relatives nearby and my aunt took my wife and I here. Among the best sushi we've had in the states. We had toro-tuna and toro-yellowtail. Both were very, very creamy and soft. Also had their sashimi plate. Everything was very fresh. They also have an aburi sushi option with some cajun spice (aburi is sushi that is slightly grilled and slightly raw). They have some sushi that comes with their homemade roasted garlic. Overall, we had an excellent lunch. But I should add that my uncle/aunt come here a lot and they always ask for a particular chef (they followed him over from Tokyo Tokyo in Ontario - think he came over sometime over the past year) so he gives them the best stuff. I can't say that I would get the same cuts or service if we came by ourselves. And, I can't say I can comment on the value as we tried to pay for it but my aunt threatened the chef that she would never come back if they took my card...needless to say, I lost that battle. read more

I love the sashimi here, it's always been fresh and delicious. The Color Don sushi special is my personal favorite - yellowtail, salmon, and tuna sashimi with sushi rice and miso soup. The only drawback is that they're usually very busy in the evenings and the service can be a bit spotty. read more

I ordered the spider roll at Kuma... when it came out, it looked like something that I could've made. The roll was HUGE in terms of diameter, must have been like 2 inches in diameter. You might be wondering why that's a bad thing... because each piece was cut to 1/2 inch thickness. There was no way that we can eat this without dropping at least half of it somewhere as it crumbles... BAD. This was the 2nd spider roll that came to us... the first one had a piece of hair on it. I'm actually surprised at how good my eyesight is and caught it as soon as the waitress placed it on our table. She quickly apologized and came back with another one (reviewed in previous paragraph). What really annoyed me was that there was no real apology... as if it's my fault to point out the hair. If it's a busy restaurant, fine... but it was not busy. The main chef (maybe owner?) was chatting with the customers next to us. All he had to do was to walk a few steps over and apologize, then problem solved... but I waited and waited... no such deed. read more
