I'm always on the hunt for good sushi and stumbled across Kumo while hitting up the local Teeter. Kumo looks like any other joint in a strip mall, but the inside is clean and modern. The staff, to include sushi chefs are all very helpful and friendly. I'm a creature of habit and always order the spicy tuna or yellow tail roll - this time around, I had my husband with me, with our stomachs eating themselves. We ordered the gyoza, duck spring rolls, shrimp tempura and two different rolls, the Tiger Eye and Mega Roll. Please forgive me for not remembering the exact types of fish that went into each roll, but they were both excellent. The Tiger Eye was wrapped in this tiger striped seaweed with some type of spicy tuna/salmon combo while the Mega Roll had spicy tuna/crab type combo with no seaweed. Please take my word for it when I say the Tiger Eye rolls is worth it - I was sad that I even had the Mega Roll and the Mega is pretty damn good too! Everything we ate hit the spot. For the duck spring rolls, be sure you like duck sauce because it comes covered in it. I like duck sauce with my duck, just not that much - a dab'll do! Kumo used to be a 4 star place but they have gone down significantly in all categories. We've ordered here many times in the past both take out and dine in. Tonight sealed the deal and we will not be ordering here again. The sushi rice was chewy (and possibly old?) as was the nori. 6 rolls and an app for $100, the price doesn't match the quality. This review is for takeout hibachi. I got the scallops and overall it wasn't the best. There just wasn't really any flavor to the scallops or the vegetables or the fried rice. The shrimp sauce was extremely diluted with water and thin. The ginger salad was really good, fresh greens and more than enough dressing. Clear soup was a bit less flavor than usual as well. I'll probably give them another try but next time go for some sushi. read more

Unfortunately I have to agree with the other review written today about these rolls being incredibly bland. I ordered two rolls and an avocado salad and my order came to about $55 so this wasn't the quality of fish I was expecting for the price. My salad was very good and fresh so I had high hopes for my rolls. The dancing dragon roll was incredibly disappointing -The tempura shrimp might have been the smallest shrimp I've ever seen in a roll and the spicy tuna was actually offensive. It had zero flavor zero spice but had the look and smell of canned tuna. The Kani was overpowered by the sesame oil it was swimming in. We each tried one bite and tossed the rest because we questioned the quality of the tuna. The amigos roll was better but also on the bland side - I was glad to have a roll I didn't feel obligated to toss after a bite. Our service was also excellent--we got an order of mango & green tea mochi (which were delicious) and we didn't realize that it would come with whipped cream on top. The filling was so tempura-heavy that you could press one of the rolls and watch the oil ooze out. Solid, nearly flavorless, hunks of soggy oily bread. My friend made two separate orders (an avocado roll and a shrimp tempura roll) and they combined them in one container. He is allergic to shellfish and couldn't eat it. The man at the window complained that we didn't tell him that my friend was allergic. That should mean nothing because he made it clear that the orders were SEPARATE.. multiple times. At first, he didn't want to change the order, but after I explained that he was giving poor service, he angrily agreed to fix it. First, I told him to leave the order at the window with me and just make a new one, and I'll hand him the old one when he gives us the new one. I suggested this because I knew that he would just separate them instead of making a new order. He refused to make the new one without taking the old one. As I suspected, he just separated them and gave them back, but the avocado rolls still had caviar on them... which my friend still couldn't eat due to the allergy. Eventually, he agreed to make a fresh roll which should have been done in the first place. He also messed up my order after I repeated it multiple times. Never going back. Kumo Sushi is my go-to sushi spot and I cannot say enough good things about it! I've lived nearby since it opened, but didn't truly discover how fantastic it was until about five years ago. The storefront is really cute, and very appealing upon entering. The staff is very prompt about getting you seated and asking for drink orders. Their menu is quite expansive. They have a broad variety of sushi appetizers, regular appetizers, sushi rolls, nigiri, specialty rolls, noodles, rice bowls, bento boxes and more. I obviously gear towards the sushi (because who wouldn't!) but it's nice to have those other options when I dine with folks who are not huge sushi fans. I love the sushi appetizer, because you get a few pieces of nigiri. It's usually the standard types - salmon, tuna, yellowtail and another, but if you just want a little nigiri it's a perfect size, since ordering individual pieces are more expensive. The dumplings are always great (either variety), as is the yellowtail jalapeno, but the real star appetizer is the Rock Shrimp Tempura. Like a regular shrimp tempura, the rock shrimp tempura is fried a little more (I think) and covered in a sweet sauce that is absolutely delicious. When my fiance and I dine, we almost always opt for the Spicy Triple - three rolls; spicy salmon, spicy tuna and spicy yellowtail - and the Sexy Boy roll. The Sexy Boy is no longer on the menu from what I've seen, but I have never been told that I was unable to order it! Other favorites of ours are the Spider Roll, Shrimp Tempura Roll, Dragon Roll, Tiger Eye Roll, Godzilla Roll and Christmas Roll. We really like the sushi roll entrees because it's the most bang for your buck, plus you get a soup or salad with it! They have lunch specials too, which I am unfortunately not able to take advantage of, but they are a great deal too. I have always found the service to good when dining in or ordering carryout. When dining in, our order has always been taken promptly and with 100% accuracy. On carryout, we've had a couple of snags, but nothing major that was displeasing. Saving grace is that they don't add an inch of rice all around. $9 for two rolls at lunch. Sashimi: fish is fresh, but imitation crab doesn't belong with sashimi. I never eat the rice that typically comes with sashimi orders, but this didn't come with rice for those who expect it on the side. If you're looking for something more substantial than just fish for fill your tummy to suffer another 4 hours at work, this may be a bit lacking. $13 for lunch. read more

Just moved to the area and I've heard good things about this place so I knew I had to try it. My husband and I came in around 6 on a Saturday evening and the place, which is kind of small was already half full. Mostly because of large families. Service was fantastic, our waitress checked on us frequently and was very nice. Food was delicious! We got shrimp shumai for our app and several sushi rolls for our dinner. We got spicy salmon, Mount Fuji (our fav), sweetheart, and a roll with shrimp tempura in it but I cannot think of the name. All of that was just the right amount of food for the two of us. There are tons of different rolls to choose from, which can be a little overwhelming but I definitely like having options. Everyone can find something they would like here. I like this place a lot. Easy to park. There is open parking for Harris Teeter. It's crowded during lunch time. They can take reservations if you call ahead. The price here is very reasonable. For a boat of sashimi, it is about 27, with beautiful decorations. read more

Kumo Asian Bistro in Alexandria has been my family's go-to sushi spot since we moved to Northern VA 4.5 years ago. We recently moved to Herndon and were excited to learn that Kumo Asian Bistro has a 2nd location, Kumo Sushi, in Herndon. We were a little bummed to find some of our favorites missing from the other location missing from the menu (large size of soups, no wonton soup, no monster roll). We also noticed that their online menu was different from their Doordash menu (Doordash had a wider variety of special rolls) so we called in our order for pickup. We ordered a rainbow roll, sweet potato roll, sweetheart roll, 2011 roll, Alaskan roll, ika sashimi, salmon sashimi, and miso soup. We were overall disappointed - everything was less good than Kumo Asian Bistro. The special rolls had too much sauce and the soup had a gritty texture. We'll continue making the drive to Alexandria when we have sushi night. read more

I love Kumo! It is out go-to sushi spot, we order from them every week! Their rolls are really creative, I love the Lion King roll which has pork sung on it, something I never tried before. Their basic rolls like eel avocado and spicy salmon are also delicious. Regrettably, I have not tried any of their non-sushi items, but I vow to one day! :) I wouldn't go in expecting the world's greatest sushi, but it's definitely a spot you should have in the rotation for when you're craving good sushi at an affordable price. This is a small restaurant that is inside of a shopping square. I would've never guessed that it was even there if I didn't look this up on yelp. At first it just seems like a regular little restaurant, nothing fancy but once you step in the whole image of the place changes. They have a nice bar to sit up at to watch the chefs, they have really modern and nice . They have really cute lighting and it's really unique. I would even say it's a cute place to have a date. The atmosphere is really intimate and cozy. As for the service. The service was really great! The waiters and waitresses always are attentive to your needs and they're very nice. They filled my water right away when they saw it was empty and really let us take our time with the menu. They did not hover around us, but they were always there when you needed them. Very welcoming! The food is really good especially for the price that you pay. I paid around 20-25 dollars for a sashimi / sushi platter and it came out so nice! The portion size is very generous and when they brought it out they used the dry ice to make the fog spilling effect. It was very nice and I haven't seen many places do this. Their bento boxes do not come in the traditional bento box, but they come in a very nice square plate. We were very happy with our food and everything was delicious. I recommend the rock shrimp appetizer, the shrimp were nice and crunch and the sauce is so yummy! Definitely coming back here. read more

I have a hard time reviewing sushi because I have a holy grail restaurant back in my home state, which has effectively ruined me for all sushi for eternity. So I already have a built-in bias. And I'm definitely thinking more 3.5 stars for Kumo. 4 with the theatrics, 3.5 if we strip that away and focus on service and food. My husband and I ordered four rolls (heck if I remember what they all were, though one was definitely lobster tempura) and because one was special (Angry Dragon perhaps?), we received free edamame. The lobster tempura was my favorite - excellent flavor profile. The Angry Dragon was my husband's favorite, though I had difficulty eating it because it was probably twice the size of a normal sushi roll. Sushi isn't really an "eat it in more than one bite" kind of food, so that was awkward for me, though the combination of flavors was fantastic. One roll I ordered had seared cream cheese on top, and they used an offensive amount. Basically it tasted like cream cheese and rice ... I'm not even sure there were other ingredients inside. But. Their plating is best described as a cross between a party cruise and Las Vegas, and it provides entertainment through your entire meal. Luckily, their sushi is good enough that it's not entirely overshadowed by this, but I'll be honest - it's what I remember most after the fact. If I'm back in the area, I'd potentially eat at Kumo again. read more

Definitely among the best sushi in Herndon. I came here with a friend for dinner and it cost around $70 for two people, a reasonable price for pigging out on high-quality sushi. The restaurant is located in a shopping plaza near a number of office complexes. It had a romantic ambience and is a great place for a date. Service was decent - my waiter was attentive and helpful, and my food came out quite fast. To begin my meal, I received steamed edamame on the house, which was a nice touch. The menu had a large selection of adventurous specialty rolls, such as the Hot Girl Roll and Sexy Girl Roll. All of the rolls I tried were fantastic and flavorful. The Dancing Eel Maki Roll was a standout. It had grilled eel, shrimp tempura, and asparagus, generously drizzled with eel sauce and spicy mayo. The roll had 8 large pieces and was absolutely decadent, the perfect balance of sweet from the eel sauce and savory from the protein. The presentation was beautiful - almost too beautiful to eat - and made for incredible photographs. There was also a huge shrimp tempura sticking at the ends of the sushi roll. I also ordered the Dragon Roll, which had eel, cucumber, and spicy mayo, and was topped with tobiko and avocado. The avocado was creamy and added the perfect texture to the roll. I had the Mount Fuji Roll as well, which was a fried California Roll topped with spicy tuna and spicy mayo. I'm not usually a fan of California Rolls, but everything tastes better fried and this roll was surprisingly good. I ordered the Sashimi Plate which had a variety of fish - tuna, salmon, and lobster. The presentation was stunning with colorful flowers and plants adorning the sashimi. The sashimi itself was thick and tasted so fresh. You could tell they used high-quality fish. The salmon was my favorite - it was perfectly buttery and literally melted in my mouth. Off of the regular menu, I ordered the Beef Teriyaki Bento. It came with miso soup, a few vegetables, salad, rice, spring rolls, and a couple small orange slices. The beef teriyaki itself was so sweet and tender, and the spring rolls tasted fresh and flavorful. This bento box was an excellent way to sample many different tastes at once. I also had the Hibachi Scallops which came with miso soup, vegetables, salad, and fried rice. The portion of scallops and vegetables were both a bit skimpy, and the vegetables consisted of mostly onions and a few broccoli and cucumber slices. I would say stick with the sushi - it's what the restaurant does best. For dessert, I had their fried green tea ice cream. It was crispy on the outside and melt-in-your-mouth heaven on the inside. This is not the best of sushi and definitely not the worst of sushi. I recommend ordering the specialty rolls. I made a mistake by ordering a noodle dish once and the bento box this past visit, and neither were good. In the bento box, the daily appetizers weren't fresh, the roots tempura needed a crispier batter, and half of the sashimi were an ok quality. I ended up enjoying someone else's rolls both visits. Thank goodness for family style! Even then, the rolls aren't the greatest. Fish to rice ratio is descent for the price. Fish is not the freshest and deserve a good rating at best. Presentation is pretty for those who eat with their eyes. Menu selection of sushi is huge and it can be overwhelming, so just order what you know you will like. read more

I have a special place in my heart for Kumo and for good reason too! First of all, they have sushi for everyone. The menu is so extensive that my friend literally took half an hour to decide on what to get (not to the waitress's delight) haha. I've come here atleast 10+ times and I have my favorite rolls. I usually get sashimi and the black jack roll which is seriously the perfect combo for my taste buds. It has a little bit of sweet, crunchy and spicy flavor that makes me keep coming back! I love the variety of sushi that they have but some of their rolls are pricey. I feel like the prices have increased since my last visit in May. Their presentation is also very nice so if you're into aesthetics, share a love boat. It definitely will fill you up and the price is reasonable too. I only come here to quench my sushi cravings so I haven't tried their other dishes. The one thing I have noticed about Kumo is that I never know what to expect when it comes to the service. That's where Ariake in Reston has a leg up on Kumo because their service is always on point. In my last experience at Kumo, the waitress seemed very rushed and didn't know much about the menu.
