I have a special place in my heart for Kumo and for good reason too! First of all, they have sushi for everyone. The menu is so extensive that my friend literally took half an hour to decide on what to get (not to the waitress's delight) haha. I've come here atleast 10+ times and I have my favorite rolls. I usually get sashimi and the black jack roll which is seriously the perfect combo for my taste buds. It has a little bit of sweet, crunchy and spicy flavor that makes me keep coming back! I love the variety of sushi that they have but some of their rolls are pricey. I feel like the prices have increased since my last visit in May. Their presentation is also very nice so if you're into aesthetics, share a love boat. It definitely will fill you up and the price is reasonable too. I only come here to quench my sushi cravings so I haven't tried their other dishes. The one thing I have noticed about Kumo is that I never know what to expect when it comes to the service. That's where Ariake in Reston has a leg up on Kumo because their service is always on point. In my last experience at Kumo, the waitress seemed very rushed and didn't know much about the menu. My dad has been talking non-stop about Kumo Sushi for months now and I finally caved and decided to order some sushi from here. I was apprehensive because it's definitely on the pricier side. Kumo Sushi is still 5-star worthy. So, you may (or may not) be wondering...then why the update? Well...for one thing, they finally got their liquor license. We dined there tonight (Saturday) while business was slow so the manager came over to chat. He told us that it took 3 months for them to get their license. My husband asked him how many customers asked about ordering alcoholic beverages. The manager's answer: "too many"! He also told us that word is getting out about them now serving liquor and that business is picking up. I say good! This place is so superb, that I would truly hate to see them fail. Also, just note --- when you go during a slow time and order sushi, the sushi chefs will take their time preparing your entree. As a result, your entree will be very pleasing not only to the palate but to the eye. If you go when things are more hectic, the sushi chefs forego the elaborate presentations and you get a simple, unadorned serving. We had suspected that this was the case and tonight, when asked, our waitress confirmed this. Either way, it is some excellent quality fish! This is a sister restaurant to the one in Alexandria (Manchester Blvd) and the operating model is the same - BIG on presentation. But wait - I think they do "big" even bigger here. A Japanese person would probably feel uncomfortable and maybe even a little embarassed with the showy nature of the extravagant creations. The food here is almost constructed like a florist would create a floral arrangement. I ordered a sashimi deluxe and boy was it. The picture doesn't really do it justice, the thing is like two feet tall with a big fan and weeds and flowers eminating from all different directions on a glowing bed of ice. I didn't know whether to eat it or do the "horse-riding dance" on it. I just thought it was way too over the top for my taste. All that being said, the sashimi itself was fresh and really good and the service was on point. The ambviance of the restaurant is really cool. Check out the display case of Japanese artifacts in the foyer. Trendy neon and modern features line the walls of the dining area and the sushi chefs are very professional. The tables and seating area was immaculate and the bathrooms were spotless. All in all - Kumo in Herndon is an excellant place for suburbanites who want the American-expected presentation of Japanese cuisine. To me it's like touring Japan on the Shinkansen without getting off - you get to see all the sights and they are wonderful, but you don't actually experience what's it's like on the street. Absolutely delicious. I usually love deep fried rolls and this definitely hit the mark. The jalapeno provided a pretty strong heat which i enjoyed. the roll was very good and topped the christmas roll(though just slightly) for my new favorite. christmas: Still absolutely delicious as per my lasta review! simpkins: It was good, not bad by any means and I really liked it. I'd prefer for their spicy tuna and spicy lobster to be a lot spicier...both my date and I agreed that it could have a little more heat, but that's just our personal preference. When I ordered the three rolls the waitress said that she remembered me from last time, since I ordered and ate three rolls that time as well...Not sure if she really did(which if she did than A+ for them for knowing their customers since its been 3 weeks since i last went) or if she just looked up my yelp review since I think she saw me check in there(which again A+ for them that they actually read these reviews and take what their customers say into account. I felt like I should update my older review since there seem to be lower rated reviews due to the service. The food is spectacular, as always. For a restaurant that opened less than a year ago, the fish quality has always been outstanding: not only are their regular sashimis (salman, tuna, red snapper, etc) very fresh and have a nice texture, but they also offer other kinds of less common fish like white tuna and fatty tuna, and the quality for that is just as good. My brother always orders the bento box, which is a large sized plate with plenty of food. All the special rolls are good to try - if you're with a group, I'd suggest ordering one apiece and trying everything because everything tastes really good. I've found that a favorite that we always order here is the "Hot Girls Roll" and the "Dancing Dragon" - both are absolutely delicious and well prepared. The presentation is also spectacular, so hats off to the chef! If you want to impress some friends, come here. They always make a point to arrange dishes nicely, and some of the dishes are really extravagant (such as the sashimi platter). It's really a treat to come in every time and see how they will serve you. As far as the service goes, they're actually quite attentive - my family and I have never had any problems with them. They are a bit quiet and sometimes their English is a bit off, but if you seem friendly and joke around, they're much more warm. I remember one time that we were there, we were talking about how we didn't know what to get for dessert since there were so many options, and after hearing us, our waitress came over with a dessert sampler - for free! Another time we were there, my uncle had spilled hot tea all over the table by accident and before my mom could even put her napkin on the table to wipe the spill, the waitress was already there with a towel to wipe up the mess. We didn't even have to ask! If you come more often and get to know the staff (my dad regularly asks our waitress if the "girls are hot" when we order the Hot Girls roll), they'll usually bring you out some free food for you to try. There was the dessert platter, for instance, and other times we've received the crispy oysters (which were the perfect crispy texture) and the Rockin' Shrimp (which was also well prepared, crispy and a little sweet). This is definitely a good sushi place that's in the area - very clean, chic, and the food is fantastic. I'm upgrading my review to 5 stars because Kumo is really what's good nearby - the only other place I can think of that's good immediately around the area is Hama Sushi and Masutake, but Hama lacks in presentation (but is more homey; the fish quality is about the same though Hama has better edamame) and Masutake lacks in specialty rolls (but has better meal options since it is a Japanese steakhouse). This gets 5 stars for the comparison to other sushi places in Northern Virginia. Stopped by for a quick meal on New Years Eve and the entire meal was great. The service was fast, the waitresses were friendly, and the fish was fresh. They even brought out free edamame just as a "New Years eve gift" and the meal ended with a cut-up orange; a nice palate cleanser and closer. I ordered the sashimi deluxe which was 21 pieces of pure bliss. Standouts were the salmon and tuna but it was all delicious. Not to mention the presentation was phenomenal - photo attached. A dry ice chute, with the fish on top of fresh ice, flowers sprouting up, truly a spectacular presentation especially for a somewhat hole in the wall type of place. This place is in my lunch rotation! I love ordering the chirashi lunch special as it's a good price for a lot of different fish! It's a good portion that will put you in that sweet spot between hungry and full, which is saying a lot as I'm usually left hungry after getting sushi at any other place. As a sushi snob, I've had better sushi and I've had worse sushi but can tell that the sushi chefs here know what they're doing to get the fish to the right temperature (a problem I usually run into at other sushi places not knowing how to get the texture consistent). Excellent selection of sushi and rolls! I was very pleased with the decor and atmosphere. It was exceptionally clean and the staff was pleasant. I came in with a growling stomach and left with a food coma. They have this great deal with their Bento Box. It comes with miso soup, salad, and you pick two of the following: various teriyakis, tempura, sushi. Little did I know this also came with a few dumplings and spring rolls. All of it was beyond delicious and I was surprised that I could finish everything. They left us a complimentary orange that was cut in a quite masterful way as I was paying for the check. The rainbow was just okay and would of rather had one at Jackson in the Reston Town Center. The Alaskan roll was good but not great. I did try their house merlot and thought it was pretty decent. Nice sushi place in the middle of a town center setting. Parking was a bit tough the day I arrived as they were cleaning a majority of the parking lot in the middle of the day for some reason. I came in right on time as they do get busy during the lunch hour and was almost at capacity by the time I finished my meal. Place is not huge but has 15 to 20 tables and a sushi bar you can slide up to. Staff was friendly but not overly active, they are there to take your order but didn't do many check ins outside of picking up a plate when you are finished. I went with the lunch special, 5 pieces of nigiri and a California roll, more than enough to fill you up but not overstuffed. Fish was fresh and of a decent quality but the California rolls were on the small size. I highly recommend the rock shrimp tempura for an appetizer, it was delicious. It reminded me of the honey walnut shrimp from panda express (I forget which chinese chain restaurant has it) except without the walnuts (it's better off that way in my opinion). The restaurant is very trendy and the plating and garnishing at the restaurant is really well done. I especially liked the blue, almost glowing, plate on which I got my sushi. And cost-wise, the sushi is not as wallet breaking as many other places. So all in all, Kumo is the ideal sushi restaurant. It's not the best sushi I've ever had, but as an overall package, it works tremendously great. And as far as the decorum goes, I can't think of a better restaurant for a date (assuming your date is a sushi eater). I had a great meal here with some coworkers while in town for a conference. On a weeknight it was fairly empty so we had no problem having our large group seated. A few of my colleagues who live/work in the Herndon area had been a few times for lunch and recommended it to us. Apparently it's often much more crowded during the day as it's in an area with lots of offices but not so many homes. Like most sushi spots, they run pretty good lunch specials too. We ordered a variety of sushi rolls and hibachi. I have to say, compared to places that exclusively does hibachi (grill it right in front of you), I was underwhelmed with the steak hibachi. That said, the sashimi and sushi appetizers we all shared were excellent and everyone who ordered maki rolls for dinner was happy. Stick to the sushi here and you'll be happy. Visited this location on a tuesday night and had a great time. There were four of us in our party and all gave high marks. The decor was kind of art deco, bright and upbeat. As far as the food goes, it was 4 stars all the way. We all got something slightly different, some meals, some sushi, I got hand rolls. All was good. Came out promptly and everyone's food was to order. I really liked the presentation and all the fresh stuff was fresh. Service was solid, pretty much what I expected. Our waitress was not super-friendly, but efficient and got our order right, which are my basic requirements for a waitress-patron interaction. Understand that having a warm, friendly face is a plus, I am not trying to build long-term relationships via a restaurant experience. They weren't pushy (we hung around for a while after we wrapped up dinner), but missed an opportunity to upsell us on coffee/desserts. Overall, would highly recommend.
