I've been to this Kung Fu Tea location a number of times between 2016 and 2019 and always found it to have some of the better boba in the area, not quite matching shops in the Bay Area and Socal, but close. As we were driving through Cleveland, we decided to stop and get a drink. Oolong Milk Tea, Large, 50% Sweet, Less Ice w/ Boba ($6.60) - The tea was way oversteeped, resulting in a very roasted, almost burnt taste. I asked for half sweet, but the sweetness level came out at around quarter sweet if compared to other boba shops. The boba was not good - I could tell it was honey soaked, but it was not cooked nearly enough. Quite hard and not a great texture. What happened to this Kung Fu Tea location? It used to be so good and now it's very mediocre. Then again, this might be a company-wide issue with Kung Fu Tea. Since the pandemic, I've been to multiple locations and I have not been impressed with any of them. I definitely do not recommend this place. Kung fu tea is a solid bubble tea spot by uptown. I've been to many different locations across the United States, and they're usually a dependable place for bubble tea, though the quality is pretty variable because of the franchising. This location in particular makes solid bubble tea, though my biggest gripe is that the wait time is always very long. But not always the best service cuz some of the late shift employees were a little standoffish about it being closing time (10 mins before, actually), and they closed the front door (locked it), pointing us to the back which actually ended up being more convenient for the parking lot, but still it's pretty bad customer service. But now for all the good factors - starting with the drinks we love. What to get: Lemon Black Tea With Tapioca! Or: All the fruit teas are pretty good, especially if you go off menu and get black tea! Or: Go crazy and order your fruit teas with the very strong Oolong! Or in winter: Any of the hot milk teas! Which milk teas are best: Honey Oolong! Oolong! Maybe Taro or Almond! I also love the regular milk tea with Oreo! My earlier assessment (pre-bringing Barbie here) was even more glowing: This is one of the best Kung Fu tea locations I've ever been to. Yes they have their issues - sometimes their equipment doesn't work, and it can make some of the employees a little bit down on the place, but what they don't realize is that they are working at one of the best locations there is, all things considered. The owner also has a spot which is similar, but much shinier and newer (but similarly challenging to park at) down in Kent at Kent State Uni. Employees here were great to me. They are super friendly and super nice and they make their drinks exceptionally well. The Boba is perfect in texture and has that lovely sweet KFT taste. The lemon black tea is literally one of the most enjoyable versions of this amazing drink that I've ever had. I would put it straight into my top five KFT locations in the country. I should have tried it sooner and will definitely come back whenever in Cleveland. On the negative side... Wait times can be long, parking is a nightmare, but then when you're the only good bubble tea shop in the whole Cleveland area what do you expect? I went to visit Kung fu Tea for their special edition Kirby (Nintendo video game character) drink. Unfortunately, this location was all sold out of the drink? I was visibly disappointed and the front counter girl asked if she could make a recommendation for me to try, so I accepted. She recommended Winter Melon Tea, and I actually really enjoyed it!! As you can see from my photo, I was still followed by the Kung Fu Tea Kirby advertisements, even with my alternative drink. Upon waiting I sat down for a bit, but I will say this location was not very clean. You could still see crumbs on the counters that had a bit of sticky residue. Not the cleanest joint, probably going to try somewhere else. Also, I just want to mention parking is a nightmare AND it is paid parking. While I'm glad they clean, it was difficult to be inside while they made our drinks. I cannot imagine eating in. It is located in one spot, together with a sushi place. The signs outside don't really tell you that, so we were looking for another door (and, when inside, trying to see where to order). This Kung Fu Tea location made a smart move to open the location here. University Circle is the only part of Cleveland that actually has an existent Asian population. Kung Fu Tea is inside the same building as Kenko so they can cash-in money from the Asians and the part of the population that loves Asian fusion. Unfortunately this Kung Fu tea location has one of the worst drinks I've tried from all the Kung Fu Tea locations I've been to. The drinks a flat-out too sweet. Usually when I order a 50% sugar drink i can actually taste the difference from the regular sweetness drinks. Not here. The drinks are sweet, sweet, sweet, and sweet. No depth of flavor from their milk tea. Just syrup. The population of Kung Fu tea is almost entirely made of Asian students. And non-Asian students from Case Western. Shockingly no parents with kids because parents usually like taking their kids out for a sweet treat on occasions. Anytime is a good time to visit Kung Fu tea. The line moves fast since there's a electronic device that you can use to order your drinks and customize them. The only aspect you can't customize is sugar for some odd reason. The only times you want to avoid Kung Fu Tea is during a Kenko lunch rush and a weekend afternoon. The people from Kenko also go straight for bubble tea if they want bubble tea with their food. So you may run into some confusion if there's a line for Kung Fu Tea and a line from Kenko as well. Parking at University Circle sucks. You'll have to park further away from Kung Fu Tea. I suggest you park at the garage on Bellflower road then walk to Kung Fu Tea. The ambience of Kung Fu Tea is pretty great when an excess of university students aren't around. Kung Fu Tea is one of the few places that offers boba (bubble tea) in Cleveland, and I definitely find myself here when I'm craving boba! I usually get milk tea with bubbles when I come here (oolong, black, or green milk tea), but I've also tried their pomelo and grapefruit teas. This place conveniently shares the space with Kenko and offers food, such as teriyaki bowls and sushi, so you can grab a meal while getting your boba fix! The restaurant is pretty spacious so you can usually find somewhere to sit pretty easily. The employees I've encountered here are also friendly and efficient! Overall, I like Kung Fu, but I am from CA with so many more options for boba and unfortunately, Kung Fu is just not one of my favorite boba places. The milk teas taste too milky/creamy for my preference, and when I order them less sweet, it just tastes watery (rather than having a strong tea taste, which is what I prefer). For milk tea on the east coast, Kung Fu is pretty good - you can customize sugar and ice levels like at typical milk tea places, and there's a pretty solid selection of teas. I tried the oolong milk tea which had a good tea taste, but definitely not as strong at other tea places back in CA (yes, I know holding it to CA standards isn't quite fair, but I can't help it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯). Boba (which they call "bubbles" here haha) was pretty well made, very chewy the way it should be. And no skimping or extra charges when you ask for no ice - so that's definitely a plus. I'll start by saying that overall, I'm a fan of KFT. They're one of the only places in Cleveland Heights that has consistently good boba, and that should be commended. That said, here's the full list of pros and cons: Pros: - The app: It's easy to order ahead on their app, and even if you don't order ahead, you can pay via the app in store. You also have the ability to order food from Kenko through the KFT app, which makes ordering food and drink super easy. The app rewards are pretty frequent, which is a bonus. - The flavors: they have a huge variety of flavors, which is super nice. Classic teas, milk teas, slushes, and everything you can imagine. They have a wide array of toppings, and I really appreciate that you can customize not only ice levels, but sugar levels as well. - The boba itself: like I said before, other boba in the area is of questionable quality, but I always know what to expect with KFT, which speaks volumes. Cons: - The timing to order pickup: No matter when the app estimates you'll get your order, it's always at minimum 20 mins from ordering and 5+ mins from the stated time on the app. If you know this, you can plan, but still. The store has tons of employees, but only 1 or 2 are ever working the boba side of things. - Crowding: OMG this store really makes me feel claustrophobic. Because many people are typically waiting, the store gets packed and there are no measures to keep people socially distanced. Also, it's super confusing to try to figure out where to order and where to pick-up online orders, and there are tons of chairs and booths in the way that obstruct the flow. Plus, they've blocked off their extra space, which makes everything even more crowded. For this reason alone I really considered giving them 3 stars. This establishment shares space with a build your own sushi place. It's nice that you can adjust the sweetness and ice level here. Other than that, there's nothing much to write back home about. Their KFT milk tea with Oreo, barely had any Oreo taste to it and their Pomelo tea was grossly bitter and filled with undesirable pulpy scraps. Well, I've been trying to get rid of this listing because Kung Fu Tea is basically part of Kenko, but Yelp won't take it off for me. So now I need to review this too. I don't have much more to say that isn't in my review of Kenko. This is a chain that is very popular on the east coast and has finally, at long last, made it to Cleveland. Heard they are going to have one in Columbus too. It's bubble tea, as authentic and "legit" as can be, that fills a 7 year bubble tea void that I have had in this city. For those of you who might be visiting from San Francisco (not that anybody would), this Kung Fu Tea is much better than the one in San Mateo. For those of you who haven't tried bubble tea before, it's basically flavored tea (or plain tea), usually mixed with milk, and with sweet, chewy bubbles ("boba") on the bottom that you eat with your tea. You get a big straw to suck up the bubbles with. If you are trying it for the first time, I would suggest getting just the regular Kung Fu Tea (not the flavored stuff), with bubbles, 50% sugar. Quite honestly I usually go 25% sugar because bubble tea with full sugar can be cloyingly sweet. read more

I find it interesting that Kung Fu Tea is a separate listing from Kenko, considering that Kenko is basically the establishment that sells Kung Fu Tea. Regardless, as they are listed separately, I will give a review for just the bubble tea. When I was initially recommended this place last year, I was admittedly skeptical. I was never that big on bubble tea, but I knew quite a bit about Asian cuisine in the Cleveland area, and I had not heard of this place. My friend told me she loved the bubble tea here, but I was not a big bubble tea drinker at the time, so I gave a good but not excellent review of Kung Fu Tea. Now that I have sampled a few more boba places in major cities and returned to this location several times, I can unequivocally say Kung Fu Tea is the best place for boba in the Cleveland area. As far as overall bubble tea in the northeast Ohio area, only Ha!Tea in Kent offers comparable competition. This is the only place in Cleveland that has such a wide variety of flavors and customization options. For me, being able to halve the amount of sugar used is a huge benefit, as I find most sweet teas to be way too sugary by default. The ability to use other additives besides boba (such as nata jelly and mango pudding) is great too. When it comes to things like dessert and bubble tea, I rarely tend to get the natural default flavor. While I didn't think the standard milk bubble tea was anything exciting, I very much enjoyed their other unique flavors, such as oreo and black sesame. I will admit that this is one place I've returned to on more occasions than I'd like to admit, which is why I am bumping my rating of Kung Fu Tea from a 4 star to a 5 star. read more

I have to say I was very disappointed in my drink. They weren't able to provide regular boba, which wasn't a big deal but they told me they ran out of regular boba after I paid. The drink literally tasted like watered down cold tea with milk. My coconut milk tea wasn't very good for what a milk tea is supposed to be and wasn't even good for a regular tea. Alright, is it just me or have the drinks at Kung Fu Tea gotten worse recently? During my last 2-3 trips here I have been highly disappointed each time. Today I got my go-to drink, the green milk tea with bubbles. The drink is usually green whenever I order it but mine had no color to it this time. It tasted watered down and the bubbles were mushy. This place is SLOW! I just wasted 35 minutes trying to get boba and left with NOTHING. Maybe I'm too used to boba shops on the west coast that take 5 minutes max to make your drink. But I think wherever you are, anything over 15 minutes is unacceptable. However, if you're in Cleveland and craving boba, this is unfortunately one of the only options.
